GLACIAL ROCK DUST for SOIL REMINERALIZATION
GLACIAL ROCK DUST for SOIL REMINERALIZATION Trial on Bonica Roses Conducted by Advance Orchard Co. Ltd. Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust Glacial Rock Dust is a natural mineral product which is produced over tens of thousands of years by piedmont glaciers. These traveling glaciers moved north to south during the last ice age. As these glaciers traveled they picked up different types of rock, containing a full range of minerals and trace elements. The expanding and contracting action of the glaciers over time have blended and pulverized much of this material, leaving it in a fine powder form. The deposits left at the end of the last ice age are known as “glacial moraine”. Select moraine deposits are mined, dried and screened in their purest form to be used in soil remineralization for all agricultural and horticultural applications. Soil Remineralization Over the last 10,000 years, since the last ice age, many naturally mineralized soils have become depleted due to weathering, forest fires and other natural events, leaving these soils with mineral deficiencies. This condition has been further exasperated by chemical farming over the last century. Salt based fertilizers can have a toxic effect on many soil organisms, rendering them ineffective. Soil Remineralization is the process by which minerals are returned to the soil from deposits rich in minerals, restoring these soils to their natural state of balance. Soil remineralization reactivates soil organisms which benefit soil health and ultimately plant vitality. Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust and Soil Fertility Glacial Rock Dust helps to promote healthy soil ecosystems by introducing minerals which stimulate microbial population growth. Increasing microbial populations has many beneficial effects on the soil ecosystem. These organisms are necessary for soil to re-create the colloids (minerals and humus) which are needed to improve soil structure and moisture holding properties. They also provide minerals to the plants in exchange for carbohydrates from photosynthesis. This complex ecosystem, known as the “Soil Food Web”, is vital for increasing mineral availability and balancing overall plant health. The Soil Food Web "We've achieved our best growth and vitality in 700 varieties of perennials with the use of only 8 pounds of Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust per yard of propagation media (4500 cuttings per yard.)" The Soil Food Web is the complex of symbiotic microorganisms that live in the rhizosphere, (root zone) of all plants. There are well over 100,000 species of beneficial bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes that colonize this zone in healthy soils, working together to create humus, digest minerals and build soil structure to support plant life. Vince Bron, Bron & Sons Nurseries, Grand Forks, BC Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust Benefits all Plants There is a vast diversity of plant life in nature. Many mineral combinations are needed to optimally support the unique requirements of each plant species. Glacial Rock Dust provides the full spectrum of minerals for these plants through bacterial digestion. The organisms in the “soil food web” help to achieve the individual balances that these plants require. Therefore all plants benefit from the application of Glacial Rock Dust. This model promised increased yields and corresponding profits, however, these benefits have not proven to be sustainable over the long term. In less than a century many soils around the world have become depleted of their humus, their biological components and have seen a decrease in overall soil tilth. This has left many crops with mineral deficiencies, leaving them susceptible to pest infestation and disease. This often requires the use of costly pesticides ultimately leading to diminishing returns on productivity and profits. In contrast, remineralizing your soil with Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust increases biological activity, thus enhancing natural biological processes which help to complete the mineral complex in the soil. This improves the soils ability to cycle all of the necessary nutrients required by the plants which naturally increases the crops' overall vitality to an optimum level. Therefore, using Glacial Rock Dust on your crops will help to provide you with long term stability, sustainability and increased profits. Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust Improves Soil and Plant Health Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust provides minerals and trace elements which create a favorable environment for a host of beneficial molds, fungi, bacteria and earthworms promoting bacterial action. When the correct balance of minerals and soil organisms is achieved, organic matter is turned into humus and the soil becomes rich and vital. When this happens, the living soil becomes a buffer to the many variables growers must contend with. Growers have reported benefits including: ‧ Increased yields ‧ Fruit and vegetables have brighter colors and are healthier looking ‧ Flowers have more numerous and longer lasting blooms ‧ Improved taste of produce ‧ Improved disease and pest resistance ‧ Improved drought and frost resistance Not all Rock Dust Products Perform Equally While many rock dust products will provide some value, not all rock dusts are created equal. Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust was selected after many years of research and extensive comparative growth trials. The materials used in these trials were taken from many different glacial moraine deposits from all over the North Western United States and Western Canada. Our Glacial Rock Dust was the #1 production source from 50 growth trials. The configuration of the mountain ranges in British Columbia have created a natural funneling system which allowed the traveling glaciers to gather a wide variety of minerals from as far away as 2,000 kilometres. The resulting glacial moraine deposits, created by the 100,000 year glacial period, have some of the greatest diversity of trace minerals and elements found anywhere. Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust is selected from this mineral rich glacial moraine due to its unique mineral diversity. Over time, forest root systems use up minerals in surface soils. In some locations our mineral deposits are up to 50 metres deep, keeping them well out of reach from forest root systems. HEALTHY SOIL PRODUCES HEALTHY PLANTS Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust is Acceptable for Organic Certification Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust is attested to the Canadian National Standard for organic agriculture through Quebec Vrai (www.quebecvrai.org). It is also attested to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)-National Organic Program (NOP) by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) organic program and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA).
