JIU-JITSU IN THE UAE
The remarkable rise of Jiu- Jitsu in UAE, in terms of quantum and quality, is credited to the UAE’s visionary leadership and
its keen interest and support lend to various sports, aiming to advance the country’s sports scene and raising the UAE’s
sport status in international forums.
The sport was first introduced to the UAE in the late 1990’s by H. H. Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the spiritual father
of this sport in UAE. He discovered Jiu-Jitsu whilst studying in the United States of America. With a passion for martial arts,
Sheikh Tahnoon is well known throughout the grappling community as the founder of the NO GI Submission Olympics.
Moreover, he is a Jiu-Jitsu black belt accredited athlete by Renzo Gracie.
Upon returning to the UAE, H.H. immediately went about creating a combat center to provide people with the opportunity
to study and learn more about martial arts. It was named the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC). Following on from this, H.H.
General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed
Forces, also became interested in the sport. This had a big impact on the sport’s development in the UAE. It was his vision
and involvement that led to the creation of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu School programme and the first international tournament
in the region; the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship that took place in 2009. The Championship
effectively contributed to spreading the sport in many countries around the world. The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation is proud
to be hosting the 6th anniversary of the tournament this year, and for the first time after gaining its official name (UAE
Jiu-Jitsu Federation) by ministerial order number 162 for year 2012.
