It incorporates the well known shock load characteristics of the cycloidal reducer with the adaptability of a shaft mounted design. The selection of SM-Helical Buddybox combination is designed to maintain the high overload capacity throughout the drive for which SM-CYCLO reducers have become famous, so Sumitomo is able to extend the standard warranty to 24 months continuous operation. HIGH EFFICIENCY EVEN AT HIGH RATIOS unobstructed. Similarly, if the front face must be clear then the bushing can be fitted to the reverse side. The locking surface goes completely through the bore. TAPER-GRIP® BUSHING FEATURES • • • • • Standard bores require no key or keyway Accessible locking arrangement Reversible bushing assembly Resistant to fretting corrosion Easy removal of gear unit Overall efficiency of the SM-Helical Buddybox approaches 95% even at reduction ratios up to 416:1. The gearmotor and reducer design illustrated in this brochure comprise a standard SM-CYCLO gearmotor or reducer attached to a 3.5:1 (nominal) ratio, shaft mounted, helical speed reducer with hollow bore. The SM-Helical Buddybox is secured to the drive shaft using a Taper-Grip® bushing locking system. EASE OF INSTALLATION Conventional Taper Bushing Compare the SM-Helical Buddybox to other shaft mount torque drives. The drive is delivered completely assembled and ready for fitting on the driven shaft. NO ON-SITE ASSEMBLY REQUIRED With other torque arm drives, assembly of the motor, motor platform, sheaves, belts, belt guard, bushing and torque arm is required. With SM-Helical Buddybox the bushing is already in place and only the torque arm needs fitting. ® KEYLESS TAPER-GRIP BUSHING The principle of using locked tapers to secure power transmission components has been established for many years. Our bushing system is based on the well known locking capabilities of conventional taper bushings with one very significant difference: the Helical Buddybox Taper-Grip® bushing has a series of taper surfaces in the form of a continuous helix. The tapers are machined in the hub and on the bushings in the form of a shallow screw thread, which enables the bushing to be installed from either end of the output hub, dependent only on customer choice and convenience. With the bushing assembled into the front face of the gear unit, access to the locking screws is immediate and Helical Buddybox Taper-Grip® Bushing PRODUCT LIABILITY & SAFETY • NO Belts • NO Sheaves • NO Injuries • NO Assembly Errors • NO Guard • NO Noise ASSEMBLY After the bushing is screwed into the hub, the reducer can be conveniently positioned on the driven shaft. Locking is effected by sequentially tightening the screws, which draw the bushing axially against the opposing tapers in the hub, thus generating the clamping force along the whole length of the bushing in contact with the shaft. Units can be easily installed on existing shafts that may already include a keyway, even though the key will not be required. The bushing is manufactured from ductile iron which has properties similar to steel and has a certain degree of self lubrication. This alleviates the problem of fretting corrosion which is the cause of so many problems associated with the removal of shaft mount reducers. 1 CONTENTS Basic Information & Recommendations . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 Installation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Nomenclature . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4, 5 AGMA Load Classifications . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 GM Ratings . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7 GM Dimensions (Single Reduction) . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8, 9 GM Dimensions (Double Reduction) . . . . . . . . . . . 10, 11 Reducer Ratings (1800 RPM) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 Reducer Ratings (1200 RPM, 1500 RPM) . . . . . . 13, 14 Double Reduction Reducer Ratings (1800 RPM) . . . . 15 Reducer Dimensions (Single Reduction) . . . . . . . 16, 17 Reducer Dimensions (Double Reduction) . . . . . . . 18, 19 General Construction Helical Gear Case . . . . . . . . . . 20 Mixer Drives . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 21 Lubrication . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 22 Standard Motor Characteristics . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 23 Torque Arm Information . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24 BASIC INFORMATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS Standard SM-Helical Buddybox drives are designed and built for long, minimum maintenance, 10 hour daily service under conditions of uniform loads (equivalent to AGMA service factor 1.0). When an application involves more severe conditions, catalog ratings must be divided by the proper service factors. Duration of service, frequency and severity of shock must be determined in order to select the proper SMHelical Buddybox drive for a specific application. To assist in the selection process, AGMA has defined standard service factors. However, the service factors to be used for the selection of the SM-Helical Buddybox differ from the standard service factors of AGMA as shown in the table. The SM-Helical Buddybox reducer service factors are smaller than those of AGMA because AGMA service factors are determined on the basis of the gear strength in conventional worm or helical speed reducers. The SM-CYCLO portion of the SM-Helical Buddybox has a higher overload capacity than conventional reducers as a result of a greater number of reduction elements in contact and the high quality material of the components (i.e.: 52100 vacuum degassed steel). SERVICE FACTOR EXCESSIVE OVERLOADS In general, gear drives are rated for a specific application by the use of service factors. Each application has its own conditions and operating requirements. There are three load classifications: uniform, moderate shock, and heavy shock. These are further classified into duration of service per day and the prime mover (see table below). The SM-Helical Buddybox speed reducer, when used at AGMA Service Factor of 1.0, can withstand a momentary peak torque of 200% of rated torque (100% overload). SM-Helical Buddybox speed reducers provide 300% momentary intermittent shock load capacity and are warranted for 2 years from date of shipment. Refer to our standard terms and conditions for our complete warranty. GENERAL Selection of the SM-Helical Buddybox should be based on actual horsepower and torque requirements at the output shaft. Unlike some conventional gear reducers, the SM-Helical Buddybox maintains very high efficiency over a wide range of ratios. Proper selection frequently permits the use of reduced input power requirements without sacrificing torque at the output shaft. The Taper-Grip® bushing may be fitted from either end of the hub; you should ensure you have adequate access for correct tightening of the screws. Note: Satisfactory performance depends on proper installation. Therefore all instructions on this page and in the Helical Buddybox Operation and Maintenance Manual must be followed carefully. into the hub in a clockwise direction until the flange contacts the thrust collar. 5. Unscrew the Taper-Grip® bushing until the screws are aligned with the pockets in the face of the thrust collar and a gap of 1mm minimum exists between the flange and thrust collar. This may be easier if one of the screws is removed and the pocket viewed through the threaded hole. Finger tighten all screws into the pockets. Fitting the Reducer on the Shaft 6. Slide the reducer onto the shaft at least as far as the counter bore in the Taper-Grip® bushing. Gradually tighten each screw in a star pattern to the torque levels shown in Table 2. 1. Check the size and condition of the shaft to which the reducer will be fitted. Permissible shaft tolerances are given in Table 1 below. 7. Install the torque arm assembly if one is used. 2. Ensure all mating surfaces of the hub, the inside and outside diameters of the Taper-Grip® bushing and the shaft are free from burrs and corrosion. Clean each surface with a solvent to remove all traces of grease and oil. 8. After mounting is complete, the Helical Buddybox can then be filled with oil. Please follow proper guidelines for oil lubrication. For complete details regarding mounting and lubrication, please refer to the Helical Buddybox O&M Manual. 3. Lightly oil each screw and insert into the bushing flange; ensure they do not protrude beyond the rear face. 4. Insert the face keys of the thrust collar into the slots on the hub and centralize.
