S
pring has arrived, bringing with it the bridal
season sales rush to lingerie and pleasure
products retailers. This issue of XBIZ
Sensuals dives deeper than ever into bridal trends
to reveal the top products for all kinds of bachelorette and wedding celebrations. From traditional
bachelorette parties to a growing trend in GLBT
weddings, novelty manufacturers and retailers offer
a diverse range of products to satisfy a broad variety of customer preferences. As the cornerstone of
adult novelties, bachelorette products are produced
by manufacturers big and small. In this issue, XBIZ
Sensuals spotlights the specialty manufacturers
that have made the category their bread and butter.
Once the honeymoon is over and the excitement
is waning, couples-friendly pleasure products are
a good way to spark an old flame. Industry expert
Kim Airs rounded up some of the most popular
and effective toys for two. As a true testament to
the power of intimacy products, the power couple
behind Ohmibod have released a new line of toys
inspired by their 25-year-old union; and company
cofounder Brian Dunham gave XBIZ Sensuals the

Bridal Bedroom Fashion Gets Creative, Diverse for 2014
This season brings new reinventions of the lingerie
bridal staple, with new versatile designs and creative themes to spice up the wedding night.
“For our 2014 Collection, we’ve incorporated
several trends such as the hi-low, mixture of fabrications and adding crystal detailing to a couple
pieces,” Seven til Midnight’s Lisa Tran said. “We
also added a larger selection of styles ranging from
baby dolls, bustier to bra sets.”
Dreamgirl International incorporates bridal
gown fashion trends into its lingerie designs.
“For 2014, some of the hottest runway trends in
bridal fashion include petal pinks, – which were apparent at Maggie Sotero’s and Monique Lhuillier’s
collections – a ‘Less is More’ sleek set of designs,
and criss-cross back designs,” Dreamgirl’s Lar Hovsepian said. “At Dreamgirl, our designs strike the
perfect blend between showcasing chic trends and
offering feminine sensual appeal. These trends were
interpreted into our collection of hanging and packaged style of bridal lingerie that spans from stretch
mesh with spandex fabrications to laces and chiffon.

According to mainstream bridal style trends,
weddings in 2014 will play up the celebration with

Distributors, Retailers Cater to Varying Tastes in Celebrating Marriage

Retailers and their suppliers are gearing up for
a season of duality – providing shoppers with a
choice of romantic wedding-themed intimacy products and vulgar bachelor/bachelorette party items
and gag gifts.
“Bridal season is so much fun for us. We get to
really create our own hot items during this season,”
said Megan Swartz, general manager and buyer
for the Las Vegas Déjà Vu Love Boutique Stratosphere. “Normally, most items that are white do
very well. We anticipate this year the new Ovo line
will fly off the shelves. Most of the items are based
in white. Not to mention the line is super trendy
right now. LELO’s Smart Wand in white will also
be a top mover.
“The hottest item during bridal season will
always be the We Vibe – especially the We Vibe 4.
It does very well every day; this will just enhance
the sales. [Bestsellers from] the bondage area will
most likely be a combo between Sportsheets S&M
line and the Pipedream Fetish Fantasy. For the
big wedding day, as a retailer, we need to make
sure the bride and groom also have a pair of remote
control panties.”
According to Nalpac, to succeed during bachelorette season, it is important to offer a wide variety of
products.
“From sexy lotions to toys, our retailers will have
their customers laughing with joy when they opens
their gifts,” said Glenn Lebeouf. “We offer a range
of gag gifts, party favors, adult toys and lingerie.
“Bachelorette partygoers always want to give
something unforgettable. It could be something
funny or sexy Preferences have definitely gone
more risqué. For example Pipedream’s ‘Cheers
Bitches’ banner’ or the ‘Inflatable Cock Fighter
Game.’ It appears bachelorette party throwers/goers want to make a lasting memory with hilarious
games and gifts.”
Eldorado recommends retailers maintain a dynamic display area at the front of the store to adapt
to each season.
“[Retailers can prepare for bachelorette season] by moving seasonal items into clearance and
positioning the items for this season at the front
of the store,” an Eldorado account manager said.
“Also, showcasing innovative lines from Pipedream,
Forum, Hott Products and others. We have a vast
array of products that set bachelorette areas above
the mark from other vendors.”
Swartz says it’s a combination of product selection and an organized display.
“Here at Deja Vu we like to prepare for bridal/
bachelorette season by expanding our bridal/bachelorette section to include a wide variety of items
from the leading manufacturers,” she said. “Keeping the bridal/bachelorette section stocked and
organized is vital to giving our customers an inviting experience that is just one of the many ways we
display great customer service. We also attend and
promote our stores at the bridal expo that takes
place at a local casino each year.”
The location of the Deja Vu Love Boutique also
impacts its inventory.
“The majority of brides come to Vegas for their

parties to have a memorable night out on the town,
so the cutlery isn’t in high demand,” Swartz said.
“However, the jumbo penis straws by Pipedream
are definitely a must have!”
While some of Eldorado’s retailer accounts carry
bachelorette products year-round, Eldorado’s account manager said that the distributor’s annual
bachelorette/party catalog also is a valuable resource for retailers to discover the latest additions
to the category.
Bachelorette parties come in various forms.
Eldorado’s account managers say shoppers are split
between those wanting “feminine and cutesy” and
those that “want lots of penises.”
“Anything blingy and flashy has to be a good
price point,” Eldorado’s account manager said. “For
supplies, the must-haves are the table setting items
like plates, napkins, invites and cups. Inexpensive
price points are essential to make an attractive
party center.”
Good Vibrations Purchasing Manager Coyote
Days says there is an increasing number of samesex couples coming in looking for items specifically
marketed towards them. However, currently there
isn’t much to offer those shopping for same-sex prewedding celebrations.
“Hopefully it’s ‘not yet,” Days said. “There are

many items that translate across sexual orientation but people want items that represent their
reality or aren’t geared towards heterosexuals.”
Alexa Joseph, manager of Good Vibrations’ Polk
Street store echoes Days’ sentiment.
“Customers request these products weekly, but
the market appears to be lacking in that department,” Joseph said. “I expect that will change in
the near future though as same sex marriages are
becoming more of the norm, novelty companies
would be remiss to ignore this opportunity to capitalize on the need for these products.”
Eldorado’s sales department adds, “The market
is a bit lacking in the girl/girl area of same sex
bachelorette. Limited items such as vagina pops,
boobie balloons, vagina straws and the like are
available but there isn’t as widespread a product
offering as there is in the penis type items.”
Staple items on bachelorette party shoppers’
lists include games, sashes, tiaras and buttons.
Among the most popular brands in bachelorette
are Forum Novelties, Pipedream, Ball & Chain and
Creative Conceptions. Hott Products is renowned
for its edibles and Kheper Games is popular for
offering games at affordable prices.

ttendees packed XBIZ 360 Pleasure
Products Conference seminar rooms on
Jan. 22 and were treated to the expertise
of a diverse group of industry experts who
provided predictions for the future of the
market from design, tech and sexual wellness standpoints.
The daylong conference presented by
LELO, kicked off with the On the Cutting
Edge: Pleasure Products Design & Tech Innovations panel,
which featured LELO’s Donna Faro, Standard Innovation’s
Danny Osadca, Crave’s Michael Topolovac, Revel Body’s Robin
Elenga, Dr. Clockwork and OhMiBod’s Brian Dunham.
The session focused on what’s on the horizon in terms of
technology and design.
“Some of the motors that we’re developing are a lot smaller
so that will enable smaller devices,” Elenga said. “In general
there’s a whole world of imbedded electronics like heart-rate
sensors, and skin response that hook up to a micro-processor
with software that’s network-enabled to create new functions
and make a product that learns what you like and works with
you.”
Dr. Clockwork provided an example of an upcoming pleasure products innovation with a children’s toy — wearable ears
that include a sensor that reads brain waves and respond with
movements, including enabling
the ears to perk up with the user is
focused on a thought.
“Why can’t our brain waves control the motor of something that’s
up your ass, or wherever the vibration go,” Dr. Clockwork said. “This
is technology that we’re working
on — using cutting-edge technology
rather than catching up five years
later.”
Panelists also discussed challenges in producing commercially
successful designs and balancing
that with originality.
“You can have a concept and design that you think is fantastic but
the market won’t accept it or want
to pay for it,” Faro said. “At LELO,
we’re not ashamed to admit that we
have multiple products that you’ll
never see. For as many products
as we release, there are 15 that we
haven’t released.”
Topolovac added, “I think this
category is changing from the
novelty space to a modern product
space. What’s fascinating is that it’s a lot like the fashion space.
It has the diversity of fashion but is technology-driven. The
products have to work but they’re more intuitive and designed
to create an experience. The enduring brands are the ones that
look at it that way and use technology to bring these products
to life.
The High-End Appeal: Pleasure Products’ Tipping Point
panel focused on luxury brands with discussions about what is
enabling their success. In summary, panelists concluded that
in addition to high quality materials and functions, warranties
and retail staff can make shoppers feel secure in their purchases and marketing will deliver a brand’s message to boost sales.
“When I do gather up the courage to ask one of your staff

he 2014 edition of the XBIZ Awards, presented by

Fleshlight on Jan. 24, marked another milestone for
product manufacturers, distributors and retail-
ers alike, who were recognized for their excellence and
impact on the adult industry at large.
U.K.-based Lovehoney snagged the prestigious Pleasure Products Company of the Year award, which caught
co-founder Neil Slateford off guard.
“I’m totally surprised, very flattered,” Slateford told
XBIZ after accepting the award at the Century Plaza
Hotel, explaining, “We’re from England, so it’s cool that
we’ve been made so welcome here. And there were some
amazing companies that we were up against.”
Lovehoney, seeing revenue increasing due to its exclusive license to sell “Fifty Shades of Grey” merchandise,
recorded profits that tripled to £2.25 million last year,
according to filings with U.K. government agency Companies House. After catching wind of the Bath company’s
explosive growth mainstream outlets often feature it as a
paradigm of success, particularly for the online market.
No stranger to the winner’s circle, Swedish designer
brand LELO’s received recognition this year for Luxury Toy
of the Year for its innovative Tara couples massager.
More specifically, the LELO Tara is a rotating and
vibrating clitoral and G-Spot massager that features a
slim internal shaft which gently rotates and mimicks a
come-hither finger motion. The Tara’s ergonomic shape
means that it can be worn during penetrative sex with a
partner, and is the only sex toy on the market to combine
wearable rotations with vibrations, the company says.
“We’re so excited. This product has been a long
time in the making,” said Donna Faro, director of sales
and marketing for LELO, told XBIZ backstage amidst the
commotion. “We feel like it is revolutionary, and to be
honored for it is just amazing.”
LELO celebrated its 10th anniversary in style last
year at the 2013 XBIZ Awards, where it picked up grand
honors as Pleasure Products Company of the Year.
2013’s Sex Toy Company of the Year, German-based
Fun Factory, returned to take home the honor of Innovative Sex Toy of the Year — Technology for its Stronic
EINS “pulsator,” which purports to provide a rhythmic
thrusting sensation distinct from most sex toy’s typical

Memo from Fun Factory explained the win succinctly:

in a photo shoot that was done by our in-house staff. The

heart and soul into, and it feels absolutely amazing to win
tonight.”

gathered Wednesday to discuss the
salient trends, concerns and future
directions for online and brick-andmortar markets at the 2014 edition
of the XBIZ 360 Retail Conference,
presented by Adam & Eve Stores,
which kicked off with the glitz and
glamour inherent to the W Hotel in
Hollywood, Calif.
Leaders from diverse retail backgrounds — including
Good Vibrations, PriveCo., Pleasure Chest, Gamelink,
the Stockroom, Adam & Eve,
Castle Megastores, Eldorado
Trading, Babeland, Feelmore,
East Coast News and others — headlined hot-button
seminars on “Adult vs. Mainstream Outlets: The Growing
Competition for Shoppers,”
“Online Retail — Trends in
E-Commerce,” “The Future of
Adult Retail” and “Sex Ed: A
New Competitive Advantage
for Adult Retail.”
The annual event culminated with a heartfelt keynote
address by Joel Kaminsky,
CEO of Good Vibrations, who
was introduced by Castle
Megastores CEO Mark Franks
as “the real deal.”
Kaminsky stressed that

foremost a company fueled,
not by profits, but by the
mission statement to provide
accurate, sex-positive information. Tearing up slightly,
he explained that, despite falling on hard times in 2007,
Good Vibrations persevered because those behind it
“would not let it fall.”
“I have never been so happy in my life,” Kaminsky said
resolutely. “I just love what we do.”
Early on, Kaminsky established that he did not feel
comfortable claiming to know the future of adult retail,
and even took the liberty of renaming the seminar: “I
think the name should be ‘The Future of Customer
Behavior.”
He explained that each Good Vibrations establishment

Francisco), is tailored to its immediate neighborhood. He
noted that its recently launched Palo Alto location pandered to luxury, featuring items that retailed for $15,000,
and were not expected to sell, simply to establish a highend atmosphere expected by its well-to-do patrons.
A talking point reiterated several times during the
seminars, Kaminsky said that the key to competing with
online undersellers is to provide customers with an instore experience that leaves them “feeling good,” citing a
study in which 92 percent of respondents reported that
they would rather have “a really good personal experience
than get a good deal.”
Exclusive to Kaminsky’s address was the future role of
the so-called “millennial” generation in the marketplace,
who he said would arise as the strongest buying power by
2020 and should be strategically courted.
While specific discussion of millennials was absent
in the seminars, many panelists touched on tangential
topics, including the looming competitory force of Amazon
and the role of social media in marketing.
Opinions on the warehouse juggernaut Amazon differed significantly across the featured companies. While
some bemoaned its cutthroat prices and low shipping
costs, others insisted that their clientele differed so greatly
from that of Amazon that its competition was incidental.

ven before models hit the
runway at last month’s Lingerie Fashion Week, one thing
helped set the stage for a successful show — fresh paint.
Hours before guests arrived,
backdrops, walls and even
floors at the show’s New York
City venue, Canoe Studios,
were brushed over with clean coats of white transforming a cluttered studio into a blank 20,000+
square foot canvas ready for the U.S.’ only dedicated Lingerie Fashion Week.
Led by the show’s founder, Lauren Rich, teams
of workers started placing chairs, flowers and
decorations against gleaming walls while some of
the venue’s lighting experts walked around with
ladders installing spotlights throughout the site.
That’s when Lingerie Fashion Week’s designers
and sponsors arrived with racks of lingerie, mannequin forms and gift bags to set up and create a
lingerie wonderland with wrap-around views of the
Hudson River.
I arrived at Lingerie Fashion Week’s set-up day
just in time to see how such an event comes flawlessly together.
Last month’s event, held from Feb 20-22, was
the culmination of more than six months work
by Lauren Rich and her core team made up by
Michal Zarebinski, associate producer and Jessica Harmston, designer relations and backstage
manager.
Working more than 15 hours a day, Lauren and
her team coordinated with the venue’s staff, models, sponsors, designers and a team of 12 hair and
makeup experts from The Temple: a Paul Mitchell
Partner School to get each day’s events and shows
moving along.
Alice Ness, student run programs leader for The
Temple: A Paul Mitchell Partner School, explained
that that the team brought in for Lingerie Fashion Week this year consisted of the school’s best
“Future Professionals” from the school’s honors
program and a few fantastic graduates.
In the weeks leading up to the show, Ness was
in contact with all of the designers discussing the
hair and makeup looks that would complete their
collections.
“Upon arrival our team divided and conquered…
half doing hair and half doing makeup to make
sure all the models were styled before show time.

It was definitely a team effort, sometimes having
two people work on a model at the same time,” said
Ness.
From the comfort of visitor’s chairs, one could
only steal glimpses of what was going on backstage
and hardly anyone could guess what it took to get a
lingerie model ready for the runway. Ness explains:
“For makeup, we had five team members and
each team member needed a full kit. Including
foundations, powders, shadows, lipsticks, pencils, mascara and many other products needed to
complete the makeup looks on each model. And
for hair, we also had five team members who each
needed multiple bottles of hairspray, thermal protectant, and working sprays. So it’s safe to say, for
an event like Lingerie Fashion Week, the beauty
team goes through a lot of product!”

and the venue helped create an amazing show.
The season kicked off with a cocktail party hosted
by Lingerie Fashion Week FW14 sponsors Shibue
Couture and Soak Wash, celebrating the launch of
Shibue’s Summer Lace Strapless Panty Collection
and Soak’s newest eco-formulation and rebranding.
BRADELIS NEW YORK followed with the
first runway show of the season, wrapping with a
presentation and cocktail reception for 400-plus
guests.
The next day opened with a Runway Show held
by modern-boudoir luxury house Naked Princess,
showcasing floaty chemises, luxurious PJ sets,
cashmere robes and delicate lace lingerie. A “Ones
to Watch” Special Exhibition followed, featuring
new and emerging designers Arsenic & Vieilles

common response to the range has been to the detailed

have worked closely with Bettie Page’s estate to make
this an official collection of approved products. Not only

Page’s legacy with this line?
A: Bettie Page was (and remains) a pioneer for all things

Q: What makes bamboo a desirable material for apparel?
What are its qualities?
A: Bamboo is used to make some of softest fabrics that are
ideal for underwear and loungewear. It drapes beautifully offering

a complementary slimming fit. Bamboo shares many of the same
qualities of silk. It is incredibly soft, breathable, and has natural
wicking properties. It is also antibacterial and ideal for sensitive or

Q: Is there a different manufacturing process for bamboo
apparel?
A: Special care while sewing is necessary due to the fabulous
stretch of the fabric when blended with spandex. Experienced
sewers develop a feel for the fabric and know how to avoid puckering; leading to a more attractive garment.
Q: What does Magic Silk’s bamboo line consist of? Is there
a bamboo selection for Male Power?
A: The initial Bamboo Magic line consists of eight separates
which include: lounge pant, night shirt, v-neck tee shirt, camisole,
boy short, boxer short, thong and g-string. All styles are available
in three different colors: black, cabaret pink, and cobalt purple.
Male Power also offers a selection of bamboo wear available
in black and teal with new colors to be introduced later in 2014.
The current collection consists of eight styles: lounge pant, tee

established; this was my favorite part of the show. This

also be doing some business
with some of these new vendors,” Feingold said.

seminars and was looking
