Enable/Disable
Switches on/off the ModeMaster time
function. This can be used in applications
such as viewing a stream of hot metal.
In such applications, there is likely to be
occasional obscuration of the target by smoke
or other interference - this would lead to
lower (and extremely variable) temperature
readings. Conversely, sparks or cavitation
in the metal stream would lead to high (but
short-lived) readings.
The ModeMaster function minimises both
types of error by continuously ‘buffering’
batches of temperature readings over
a specific time period (approximately 2
seconds). The average temperature over this
time period is calculated and displayed.

4.10 Calibration
Note
The Calibration menu is only available to users with Administrator
permissions.
The Calibration utility within SPOT Server software allows you to check the
calibration of your SPOT infrared thermometer.
There are two modes of operation for the Calibration utility:
•
Field Calibration
•
Laboratory Calibration
The Field Calibration utility allows you to compare the temperature being
measured by the SPOT thermometer to a known single point temperature.
Ideally, the ‘known temperature’ would be provided by a traceable calibration
source, but it can also be provided by an accurate temperature measurement
of a point on your process e.g. from a thermocouple.
The Laboratory Calibration utility is intended for users who have access to
a temperature calibration facility, as it requires several traceable calibration
sources to be available at the same time. If you require more information on
setting up a calibration facility, contact AMETEK Land.
4.10.1 Field Calibration
1)
To do a Field Calibration, point the SPOT thermometer at a source of
known temperature (e.g. a calibration furnace, or a hot object which
can be measured by a thermocouple). Make a note of the known
temperature.
2) In the SPOT Server Software, open the Calibration menu and select
the Field Calibration option.
3) In the Alignment options, set the Focus Value to the distance from
the Thermometer lens to the target, then press the Set Value button.
4) If you need to turn on the thermometer LED to help alignment on the
target, tick the Demo LED check-box and press Set LED State. When
the thermometer is aligned correctly, untick the check-box and press
Set LED State to turn off the LED.
5) If you want a visual confirmation of the target being viewed by the
thermometer, press the Get Image button. An image of the target will
be displayed on the screen.
6) In the Calibration options, input the Reference Temperature i.e. the
‘known’ temperature noted in step 1, then click Next.
7)The Correction Factor (if any) calculated by the Calibration utility
will be displayed. If the factor is too large or too small then the Apply
Correction Factor button is not enabled.
8) If the Apply Correction Factor button is enabled, click on it to
calibrate the thermometer, then press Exit to close the screen.
The Field Calibration is now complete.

4.10.2 Laboratory Calibration
In the SPOT Server Software, open the Calibration menu and select
the Laboratory Calibration option.
2) To do a Laboratory Calibration, you will require sufficient calibration
sources to cover the five temperature values quoted in the Laboratory
Calibration screen for your particular thermometer. Temperatures will
be quoted in °C or °F, depending on the model of thermometer.
For example, for a SPOT thermometer with a range of 400 to 1800°C,
you will need sources that can be set to within 5°C of 542, 687, 1001,
1529 and 477°C.
3) Select the first temperature value and point the SPOT thermometer at
the source set at this temperature.
4) In the Alignment options, set the Focus Value to the distance from
the Thermometer lens to the target, then press the Set Value button.
5) If you need to turn on the thermometer LED to help alignment on the
target, tick the Demo LED check-box and press Set LED State. When
the thermometer is aligned correctly, untick the check-box and press
Set LED State to turn off the LED.
6) If you want a visual confirmation of the target being viewed by the
thermometer, press the Get Image button. An image of the target will
be displayed on the screen.
7) In the Calibration options, input the Reference Temperature i.e. the
temperature of the source, then click Next.
8)The Correction Factor (if any) calculated by the Calibration utility
will be displayed. If the factor is too large or too small then the Apply
Correction Factor button is not enabled.
9) If the Apply Correction Factor button is enabled, click on it to
calibrate the thermometer (pressing the Back button restores the values
to their pre-calibration values).
10)Press Exit to close the screen.
11) Repeat steps 7 to 9 for the remaining reference temperature points,
applying correction factors where necessary.
12)Press Exit to close the Calibration screen.
The Laboratory Calibration is now complete.

5 Data Configuration Options
The Data Logging Configuration screen (Fig. 5-1) allows you to set up the
capture and storage of data from your temperature measurement system.
5.1 Data Logging Configuration
The window on the left of the Data Logging Configuration screen displays a
‘tree’ of the thermometers connected to your system. The root of the tree is
the Global, setting, which can be used to control all settings if required.
In addition to the Global setting, you can choose which of the following data
is to be stored, and how it is to be stored for each thermometer listed:
•
Emissivity of Detector 1;
•
Emissivity of Detector 2 - for ratio and multi-detector thermometers;
•
Target Temperature;
•
Instrument Temperature - internal ambient temperature;
•
Temperature 1ms - select this option if you require temperature to be
logged at 1ms intervals.
Fig 5-2 shows a typical Data Configuration structure. For each data item
in the tree, you can configure the storage mode and storage interval (to
millisecond resolution).
Data can be stored in the following modes:
Icon
Description
Continuous - this mode causes the data item to be stored
continuously at the time interval specified.
Parent Setting - this mode sets the storage mode of this item to be
the same as the item at the next highest level in the hierarchy (i.e.
its ‘parent’).
e.g. in Fig. 5-2, The Spot1 Ambient Temp is set to use the same
storage settings as the Spot1 Thermometer.
Trigger 1 - you can specify an unlimited number of user-configured
storage triggers. Each of these storage triggers will be available in
the storage modes list. Selecting one of these triggers will set the
storage mode based on the trigger conditions and corresponding
interval. See Section 5.4 ‘Trigger Settings’.
Trigger 2 etc. - See Trigger 1 above
