KYOTO 03 CULTURAL INFORMATION CENTER. 01 EXISTING TOURIST INFORMATION CENTER JELMER VAN ZALINGEN THE NECESSITY The rich historical city of Kyoto needs a representative information-center worthy of the city’s cultural heritage . On the other hand Kyoto is a highly modernized city with a modern way of living. Therefore it is equal important that the information center expresses this modern Kyoto. The task is to combine and respect both of those elements into a new design for the Ninigi machiya. Simply said Kyoto is a modern city with a high amount of cultural heritage. A information center that wants to represent the city of Kyoto needs to respect and show the cultural heritage and reflect the modern at the same time. NEW KYOTO CULTURAL INFROMATION CENTER 04 IMPERIAL PALACE NIJO CASTLE NINIGI • MODER / TRADITIONAL The new cultural information center will be a mixture of modern (Kyoto) with a historic traditional Kyo-machiya. Preserve: the old traditional looks of the exterior (facades, roof) of the machiya by finding the typical exterior elements of the machiya (analyzed in the research book). The looks of those elements needs to be present in the new design. KYOTO STATION The Design focuses on one of the key elements of the Machiya typology the zoning, this is what I will call the sequence of spaces and exists due to the double function of dwelling en retail of the traditional machiya. This sequence of spaces is visible in The Program, The Zoning, Separation Public Private, Light and dark. 02 CONCEPTUAL DIAGRAMS TOURIST INFORMATION CENTER • SEQUENCE OF PRIVACY The concept of linear sequences that is typical of the Machiya will provide a gradient from Public to less public, by arranging the most private functions in the back. The street is the most public, after that the shop and information point will follow which are both the most public functions of the center. Then the indoor garden follows (as transition space) into the heart of the cultural center, the lecture/workshop room. Then the original Japanese garden will follow which will be preserved and at the and a bike vending machine will be placed which will be accessible through the alley. • SEQUENCE OF OPEN AND CLOSED The traditional machiya had a sequence of open en closed spaces (shop - garden - residential - garden - kura) This assured enough daylight in to the machiya and also provided good ventilation and cooling in the summer. This strong traditional element will be brought back to the Ninigi but in a modern way of an indoor garden. • SEQUENCE OF SPACES A key element of the traditional machiya is the linear sequence of spaces (shop - genkan & nakaniwa - residential area - niwa(garden) - Kura). For the spatial concept this is a valuable characteristic and is worth keeping. In the new design the typology of the sequences will be used as a design tool so that the essence of the machiya won’t be lost due to the renovation. The modern appearance of the city will also be will also be addressed, modern materialization, new (flexible) program new rooms and new use of it so it deserves a new adapted look, but it will always strict to the concept of sequences. This is the part were the two interventions will be made and the city of Kyoto can express its modernity by modern architectural languages. LONGITUDINAL SECTION 1:50 ILLUSTRATION 02 Former Gengan.
