Global brand slogan 2008 AMCN VOTES THE FIREBLADE ‘MOTORCYCLE OF THE YEAR’ The judges of the annual ‘Australian Motorcycle News (AMCN) Motorcycle of the Year Awards’ have rolled out the best of the best on to the track with one bike standing head and tail above the rest. The clear winner for 2008 – earning more than twice as many votes as the runner up – is the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade! Always renowned for its unique look, strong performance and responsive control, Australian experts have now confirmed this popular sports model as the number one bike both on and off the track. AMCN wrote, “For a machine to be a clear winner in every aspect in the superbike class is something that doesn’t happen often. This is the most hotly contested market segment in motorcycling – on both road and racetrack.” “Those voters who already own one love it, and the majority of those who don’t own one want to.” If the Motorcycle of the Year award wasn’t enough to prove the might of Honda’s new superbike weapon, the Fireblade has also taken out the ‘2008 Motorcycle of the Year Reader’s Choice Award’ with AMCN readers making it clear that the “Fireblade’s performance, styling, quality and pricing all make a big impact and, when combined, make an unbeatable package”. The CBR100RR also collected honours for the Readers Choice Award for the subcategory of ‘Best Sportsbike’. “The engine and chassis package has redefined the benchmark for production sportsbikes. Nothing compares to this outstanding new machine,” according to AMCN journalists. The 2008 model features an even more compact, mid-displacement-sized form than ever before as well as innovative performance enhancing developments like a new underslung exhaust system and new ‘assist slipper’ clutch. Honda MPE was originally established in 1969, and had all of its operations based in Tullamarine from 1981 before the motorcycle, power equipment and marine part of the business moved to one of its current Campbellfield sites in 1991. Since the Campbellfield office opened 17 years ago, the company has experienced enormous growth with Victorian operations now including lawn mower production at another site within Campbellfield, two external rider training centres (HART), one located at Tullamarine and one in Kilsyth, and an Australian design modification centre for motorcycles in Frankston. “It has reached the point where we now want to consolidate all of our operations into one location, so we are currently looking at land to purchase and with most of our 150 employees living in and around the local area of Hume, we would love to get somewhere in close proximity to our current location,” Honda Australia Managing Director, Stuart Strickland, said. Consolidating into a new, all-in-one site by the end of 2010 will not only give the company more space, but will eliminate deficiencies in the business, make staff retention easier and create the opportunity to build an energy-efficient building. “Here in our current location we don’t have a lot of space, which restricts, amongst other things, our product displays.” “The plan at the new site will be to expand our display area, giving us the ability to have more than 50 products on display and raise our profile with potential and existing customers.” “Also, to attract the calibre of people we want to have working for us depends on the kind of environment we create.” “We see ourselves as a ‘green’ company and to reflect that the new site will be a 5 star, self-sufficient, energy rated building with the best in water and energy saving devices,” Mr Strickland said. Honda is also currently entering a new and exciting phase of producing solar panels, which will hit the Australian market in late 2009. “The solar power market is obviously a growing market. Everyone is looking at alternative sources of power and our panels, manufactured via a unique production process, will be very high tech and will look a lot better than your normal solar panel,” Mr Strickland said. GENERAL NEWS MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR future will be more difficult than we have experienced over the past few years. Apart from the normal pressures of business such as not enough customers, not enough profit etc, the two new pressures are definitely availability of funds and cost increases due to exchange rate, materials, labour & fuel. So what do we do to help get through this period? As I write my first article for communicator, I wonder if I could have selected a more topical subject or any subject for which I am a less expert than anyone else. Of course, I refer to what’s happening to the world’s financial markets and how developments might affect us in business in Australia. Without repeating what we’re all hearing constantly in the media, the main issues are the unravelling of the US Financial markets which started with the US sub-prime issue last year but now extends to just about every Financial institution and Bank. Locally, the major economic factor is the Reserve Bank now trying to restart the economy that it has been trying to slow down for the last few years. Experts describe our economy as 2 speed strong investment and export sales in the mining sector versus slowing retail sales and consumer confidence. But the factor that surprised most of us has been the recent volatility of and decline in the value of the Aussie dollar. Against the $US, or dollar is now trading 12% below the first half year average and 16% below its peak. The $AU is not doing much better against the Japanese Yen, now trading 10% below the first half average. The drop in the value of our dollar now exposes the cost increases that have been accumulating for some time due to raw material and fuel and energy increases. The Chief Economist at a Bis Shrapnel seminar I attended last week was adamant that we should not panic. He believes that massive current and scheduled investment in mining and infrastructure will shield Australia from the worst of the world economic slowdown. This is reassuring, however, there is no doubt that the foreseeable The following are some basics: 1. Review your business debt positions Banks that have been very generous and accommodating are now tightening up dramatically so make sure you stay under the official bank business loan ratio (normally 70%). 2. Work harder on your trade debt receivables This is a risk time for many small business so stay on top of your accounts. 3. Make a concerted effort to clear old stock Its costing you money, you’ve probably already spent the rebates that applied to it when you bought it, its tying up your cash and its probably stopping you from buying fresh stock. 4. Keep your new stock levels up This probably sounds odd after (3) above but the reality is that today’s stock will not be this cheap again as the exchange rate and raw material cost increases will force all manufacturers and distributors to increase prices very quickly. 5. Look for waste Most businesses accumulate unnecessary expenses (bad habits) during buoyant times. Often the excesses can be easily cut without affecting your ability to do business. 6. Get professional advice At a recent Power Equipment dealer meeting, we introduced a group of business coaches. Business coaches work with small business owners to review and fine tune a business. Often, they can see improvements that you cannot and like all good coaches they push you hard to improve. As they reminded the audience, even the best need coaches – Tiger Woods has five! The next one to two years will be challenging, but with strong brands, good business skills and controls, strong manufacturer backing and determination it should be business as usual. Good Selling. Robert Toscano HONDA, RED CROSS AND TAFE TEAM UP FOR MOTORCYCLE SAFETY Zaid Sako and Phillip Georgiadis moved one step closer to realising media careers with the official launch of their joint DVD project. Produced as a partnership between Career Connections - Kangan Batman TAFE, Honda Australia (HART) and Red Cross Australia, the training DVD highlights the importance of motorcycle safety both on and off the road. Secondary school students Zaid, from Hume Central School, and Phillip, from Sunbury Secondary College, wrote, produced and edited the instructional DVD which is now being used as a training aid for HART. Red Cross are also exploring the concept of a first aid course targeted at the motorbike riding community in which the DVD will be used. The launch, which was held at Kangan Batman TAFE’s Broadmeadows campus, featured the first official screening of the Removing a Helmet from an Injured Motorcycle Rider DVD. Frank Hardy, team leader at Career Connections – Kangan Batman TAFE, said the collaborative effort between community, industry and education creates opportunities for success. “Many individuals, businesses and schools have combined efforts to produce this project, and the result is a valuable educational tool,” he said. “The DVD features footage of both road and off-road riders to remind us that safety is important wherever people ride. Additional segments focus on providing instruction on the correct way to remove various helmet types, something many riders would not be aware of.” Virginia Leafe, General Manager of First Aid, Health & Safety, Red Cross says “Removing helmets in an accident situation is one of the many first aid skills the public should know.” “It’s important for everyone to have first aid knowledge to be effective in saving lives, improving the chances of survival and minimising the consequences of any type of accident or first aid emergency.” National manager of Honda Australia Rider Training, Mark Collins, addressed the launch gathering, and highlighted the importance of these kinds of safety training tools for all motorcycle riders. “I wish this sort of training resource had been around 20 years ago when I started riding,” he said. “So many riders just don’t know about first aid issues specific to motorcyclists. We train more than 7,000 riders each year at HART, and this DVD is definitely a valuable resource for each and every one of them. “The boys have done a great job with the development and production of this project.” Zaid and Phillip are both studying Year 11 VCE at their respective schools, and are undertaking Certificate II in Information Technology Multimedia in VET (Vocational Education and Training). For more information on the DVD contact Red Cross on 1300 367 428. His incredible nitromethane fueled motorcycle “The Edge” has wowed crowds and floored the competition at tracks across Australia, but the competition is beginning to strike back. Jay explained the reasons behind his desire for constant improvement. “When I was building “The Edge” my original concept included a unique engine that would make more power than the competition. I was confident the next big step for the sport was multi valve engineering, so I chose a quad valve layout to improve air flow in and exhaust flow out of the engine. This layout works well up to a point, but the tiny exhaust valves become fragile at the incredible cylinder temperatures this nitro engine runs at” Jay said. “As Business Development Manager of Australian Automotive Components I am regularly involved in new automotive engineering projects and when we were asked to develop a supercharger installation for the awesome Honda VTX 1800 cruiser I knew I had found the ideal cylinder head configuration for my new generation nitro engine. As soon as I saw the cylinder head with its twin intake valves and a single large exhaust valve I could see the potential. Our power comes from building more efficient engines than the competition and I have been striving for an exhaust design that would be equal to the task. Honda has the design and by adapting Honda’s technology to our new engine I believe we have the potential to develop a tune up so I can ride all the way to the end of the track. If everything goes to plan that should net us Australia’s first 5 second run”. “The engineering won me over, but the additional benefit of being able to introduce Honda to Australian Drag Racing by welcoming them to my team is tremendously exciting. With Honda, Sprintex Superchargers and Gates Belts and Hoses continued support we are ready to defend our Australian Title and rewrite our own Outright Australian Record!” Stuart Strickland, Managing Director of Honda Australia MPE was enthusiastic about Honda’s association with Jay Upton and Drag Racing. “Honda has achieved the position as the world’s largest motorcycle company through JETSKISHOP.COM GETS AROUND ON AQUATRAX James Tod and his crew at Jetskishop.com on the Gold Coast have been busy this year with both charity and commercial ventures that have continued to propel them to the country’s number one Honda PWC Dealer spot. Earlier this year Tod pledged to give children with disabilities the ride of their life through the Out and About program designed for youngsters who have cerebral palsy. Mr Tod further assisted the Cerebral Palsy League through their annual fundraising `Nudie Run’ jetski rally last May, as well as making donations from each ski he sells. “It’s so easy to get caught up in your own life and in work, and forget about all the things you can do for these kids,” he said. “The delight on their faces makes it really worthwhile.” 4 The business has also been busy with commercial events and ventures including the Globe a policy of being a responsible manufacturer. Honda is the only motorcycle manufacturer to be actively involved in rider training in Australia, developing avenues for Honda sport bike owners to ride their motorcycles at track days, under supervision and sometimes with instruction.” exhilaration of acceleration in a controlled environment. “Some sports motorcycles that Honda produces have a level of performance that cannot be fully appreciated in mainstream traffic and Honda enjoys introducing riders to the excitement available from their machines. Not all riders want to participate in circuit track days but rather have shown an interest in drag racing, a sport that provides an exciting outlet for owners of performance motorcycles to experience the “Honda will continue to encourage riders to abide by the law and ride responsibly while taking every opportunity to improve their riding skills. The future of motorcycling rests with those who create a safer environment for riders to use their machines. A rapid reduction in both on and off-road motorcycle accidents is the goal of our industry and hopefully, every motorcycle rider”. Through his Top Fuel Motorcycle program Jay Upton will give Australian Drag Racing fans the opportunity to enjoy the ultimate in Honda technology and performance”. TEKNIC HONDA TAKES TIME OUT FOR SPECIAL KIDS World Surfing event in Fiji at Cloud Break. “We had people like Kelly Slater, Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning - all Pro World Surfers - using the Honda Aquatrax,” James said. “The Honda Aquatrax was the Official watercraft for the event and we had craft hit coral, suck rope into the intake of the jetpump and used for 12 hours a day. One unit even floated out to sea overnight 50ks offshore!” “The PWC’s held up to everything thrown at them.” Addtional partnerships between Jetskishop.com for the year include the Kingscliff Surf life saving who recently purchased a Honda F-12 to be used in patrol for rescue. Aquatrax are also now used in the following operations: Sea World Stunt show, QLD Surf life Saving, NSW Surf Life Saving, Kiama Life Guards, Bondi Life Guards, Globe Pro Fiji, Gold Coast Marine Security (based next to Palazzo Versace), Aqualift commercial diving. Teknic Honda’s star riders, Glenn Allerton, Jason O’Halloran and Wayne Maxwell spent time at the Tasmanian round of the Australian Superbike Championships recently with some very special children from the St Giles Society. Ben (12), Alex(16) and Jacob (13) attended along with carer Dennis, and were treated to a tour of the pits and a chat with the riders. They were also given autographed posters and caps and were able to experience world class motorcycle racing for the first time in their lives. “Alex has decided he wants to be ‘Glenn’ and no one is allowed to touch his poster or his hat,” said St Giles Marketing Manager Selena Palmer. “They had a wonderful day and we really want to thank Honda and the Team for organising the visit for us. None of the kids could stop talking about it for ages.” St Giles was founded in 1937 by the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and City of Launceston to provide aftercare support for children affected by polio. Today St Giles provides quality services for up to 2500 Tasmanian children and adults with disabilities - to enhance their independence and community participation. MOTORCYCLES DIGNITARIES AND DOOHAN OFFICIALLY LAUNCH NEW HART CENTRE IN BRISBANE 8 September 2008 - Honda Australia Rider Training (HART) have officially opened their fourth national and first Queensland training centre in Brisbane with the state’s Minister for Transport, John Mickel and racing legend Mick Doohan joining in the celebrations to show their support of the new facility. HART will be delivering Q-RIDE licence training and assessment from this new facility, and advanced courses from other sites in the Brisbane area for experienced riders. Honda Australia’s Managing Director, Stuart Strickland said it is an important part of the company’s philosophy to provide high quality rider training, and the opening of the Brisbane centre is part of the longer term goal of operating a facility in every capital city of Australia. “Queensland is now the largest motorcycle market in Australia,” he said. “And we are extremely concerned about any accidents in this state that involve motorcycles.” “Motorcycles and scooters have a place in the public transportation system, and we are seeing with the increasing number of bikes on the road that they can provide a very cost efficient means of personal mobility whilst reducing traffic mass congestion.” establishing a great working relationship with this government over time,” Mr Strickland added. Minister Mickel also stressed the importance of any positive initiatives that aim to improve safety for motorcyclists in the state of Queensland. is also one of the world’s largest trainers of motorcyclists. For more information on HART’s various courses, go to: www.hartridertraining.com.au “We can’t expect anyone to have the same level of skills such as Mick Doohan when they are starting out or even returning to the road after a break,” Mr Mickel said. “The onus is on drivers as well as riders to ensure they are behaving safely and have the skills to deal with different hazards on the road.” Five time 500cc World Champion Doohan, also gave his stamp of approval to the facility saying that ongoing training is required, no matter where you are at in your riding career. “The thing to remember is that you can continually improve your skills as a rider as time goes on. It’s something that requires practice. I don’t ride as much now as I used to, but if I did, I would certainly be spending some time working on updating my skills again before I hit the road.” “This is all good news providing we can minimise accidents. Training is one step in that process.” HART which already operates in Victoria and NSW, is Australia’s leading rider training company delivering state-of-the-art teaching methods to over 16,000 riders each year. They are the only rider training company in Australia to use rider simulators to improve Hazard Perception. “We are therefore very pleased that the Minister for Transport agreed to formally open this facility for us, and are looking forward to HART is fully owned and run by Honda Australia who, apart from being a subsidiary of the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, VFR STILL GOING STRONG AFTER 200,000KMS Nearly six years ago, an unassuming chap named Graham Smith purchased a VFR800 2002 model new from Singleton Motorcycles in NSW. had no other service issues. “The customer has been extremely happy with the performance of the bike, and this is his sixth VFR,” John said. John Apps from the Dealership reported in recently that Graham has just clocked up 200,000kms on the VFR and the bike is still going strong! “We thought we would let Honda know as this customer has ridden this bike nearly everyday for five and a half years.” “He uses it to ride to work, do shopping and go on trips so the bike has done these k’s in real world use.” “By the way the VFR odometer reaches 199,999kms and resets to 0kms,” John commented. The VFR has only ever had normal servicing completed, plus a wiring harness recall. At 198 000kms the water pump failed, but otherwise it has The VFR is still considered one of the best all-rounder motorcycles on the market today. In its latest incarnation, it continues to offer a unique fuel-injected V4 engine that produces a band of strong, accessible power through a two stage valve actuation system. Revisions to the VFR’s unique V4 VTEC sees a smoothness in performance like never before, translating to low-end torque as well as the searing power that can be expected of high performing 4-valve mills. Styling as well as effortless Dual Combined braking are integral to the design of the VFR. 5 THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORT www.hondampe.com.au TIME TO TAKE SCOOTERS SERIOUSLY VACC, the peak automotive industry body in Victoria, is calling on Governments to take scooters seriously. High petrol prices, record inflation and the economic slowdown have forced many Australians to re-evaluate their finances. As a result, many motorists, in particular commuters, are considering alternatives to the car. “Scooters are a cheap, efficient and accessible mode of transport,” VACC Executive Director, David Purchase said. This year’s VACC “Safe Routes” Scooter Rally will again provide an opportunity for owners to show their support for scooters. Four hundred-plus riders are expected to assemble at 10.30am at Luna Park for an 11am departure to Waterfront City Piazza, Docklands, as part of Community Safety Day, on Sunday, October 26, 2008. After the Rally, there will be plenty for riders and visitors to see at Docklands, including Victoria Police and Ambulance historic vehicles, and displays by the Fire Brigade, Coast Guard and Defence Forces. With 50,000 people expected to attend, it will be the largest event in Victoria during the month-long Community Safety campaign. “Scooters are now a serious and sensible transport option. They deserve the same status and respect as other vehicles on the roads.” “It is no coincidence that scooter sales have increased as motorists count the cost of travel. In fact, sales of the top ten scooter models in Australia, from January to June 2008, compared to the same period in 2007, reveals a near 57 percent increase (source FCAI).” “But the Federal and State Governments are still to recognise the true importance of scooters. As well as a cheap alternative to cars, scooter use benefits the environment because they leave a tiny carbon footprint, they reduce congestion on roads and they reduce pressure on city parking spaces.” “Now is the time for policy-makers to accommodate scooters in our road planning and traffic management systems. VACC is recommending the implementation of designated and signed “Safe Routes”, safety boxes, access by scooter riders to certain designated bicycle lanes and allowing boxed turns on certain busy intersections,” Mr Purchase said. “Scooters are now a serious and sensible transport option. They deserve the same status and respect as other vehicles on the roads” POWERED TWO WHEELERS OFFICIAL CO2 EMISSION WINNER A report issued by the Federal Government looking at CO2 emissions has identified that motorcycles and scooters do best when compared to all other vehicles - accounting for 3.2% of the vehicle fleet but only 0.3% of emissions. The public discussion paper issued recently titled, “Vehicle Fuel Efficiency, Potential measures to encourage the uptake of more fuel efficient, low carbon emission vehicles” looks at the entire national vehicle fleet and identifies powered two wheelers as clearly the most environmentally friendly of all motor vehicles. Manufacturers such as Honda, as well as motorcycle organizations across Australia have been campaigning for recognition of this fact for many years. The paper goes on to say: “Strategies to address the safety and functionality concerns relating to very light vehicles (including motorcycle and scooters) through the provision of appropriate safe infrastructure or reform of road rules may support more widespread uptake of very light vehicles.” The Federal Government paper is available at: http://www.environment.gov.au/settlements/transport/publications/pubs/vfe-paper.pdf HONDA PRAISES SYDNEY’S APPROACH TO TWO-WHEELERS Honda Australia says all major cities should aim to follow in the footsteps of a proactive new Motorcycle and Scooter Strategy for Sydney announced recently by the city’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore. Moore launched a draft plan to be presented to Sydney City Council that proposes free parking on certain parts of the street, cheaper road tolls for those travelling on two wheels and the installation of public charging points for electric motorcycles. 6 Further initiatives include street locking devices, discounted rates for parking stations and residential permits, and a safety awareness campaign to better educate drivers. The plan has been designed to encourage smaller, more environmentally friendly modes of travel and aims to support a shift away from larger, higher polluting vehicles. “It is fantastic to see that government at a local level are recognising the need to look after those people who opt to use fuel efficient, low emission vehicles,” said Honda’s General Manager, Motorcycles, Tony Hinton. “Scooters and motorcycles sales are continuing to go up because people of all ages realise they are a viable commuting alternative in the face of rising fuel costs and environmental issues.” “Motorcycles and scooters take up less space than cars on the road and cause far less wear and tear on infrastructure so it is only fair that riders be offered an incentive.” Compared to the first six months of last year, the number of people purchasing road motorcycles has increased by 9% and scooters by nearly 8%, according to figures recently released by the FCAI. “We are hopeful that other large cities in Australia will follow suit with those additional initiatives they do not already have in place,” Mr Hinton added. “It is particularly encouraging to see that the City of Sydney is recognising the need to reduce road tolls for riders.” A copy of the draft plan can be found at: www.cityofsydney.nsw. g ov.au /Cou nc i l /O nE x hi bi tion / DraftMotorcycleScooterStrategy. asp MARINE HONDA DEALER SPECIAL 33% OFF ALL BOOKING’S WITH WREN RIVER HOUSEBOATS Imagine the relaxation.... The award has been delivered on only a half a dozen occasions over the last twenty years or so and is made in recognition of outstanding and invaluable contributions to the industry. Peter has spent years giving service to the industry via a Directorship on the BIASA Board, many as a very distinguished Vice President. He has also represented state and national interests overseas on more than one occasion. According to a BIASA spokesman, “Once in a blue moon we have the need to say thanks and congratulations to a member who has delivered as much to the business of South Australian Boating as Peter has to his own business, often seriously sacrificing his own affairs for the benefit of the industry.” “Peter continues to serve today, through his role with the Board, as Chairman of the Retailers Division and Chairman for the Boat Show Committee and for his outstanding contributions to our work with government agencies at local, state and federal levels.” Honda Australia congratulates Peter on this worthy accolade. 7 MARINE www.hondampe.com.au HONDA SAYS MARINE FUTURE IS BRIGHT WITH FOUR-STROKES With the state of petrol prices having a noticeable impact on the lucrative marine industry, Honda are continuing to work on the technology that is already putting them at the forefront of the four-stroke outboard market. Honda has a long history of applying the knowledge developed by its pursuits in Formula 1, MotoGP, robotics and aviation in the development of marine products, and according to Managing Director, Stuart Strickland, the manufacturer has strongly benefited from their ability to access some of the world’s most creative and innovative minds. “Honda’s four-stroke lineage can be traced back to the early 1950s when our company was pioneering this technology,” Mr Strickland said. The latest range of advanced Honda four-stroke engines are the lightest in their class, emit significantly less emissions and significantly fewer hydrocarbons than most other comparable products on the market. Honda has introduced technologies such as BLAST, lean burn and VTEC to ensure the best fuel consumption and power delivery possible, and achieve this via the refinement of valve timing and intake systems such as electronic fuel injection and refined engine management systems. “Our products are designed to use up to 50% less than old technology outboards, and also to deliver smooth power that is extremely quiet,” Mr Strickland explained. Honda outboards are also suited to applications where both long-range cruising and reliability, and top-end speed and torque are desirable. “Our products are designed to use up to 50% less than old technology outboards, and also to deliver smooth power that is extremely quiet,” “Honda’s first four-stroke outboard was released in 1964 and since this time we have firmly established ourselves in the design and development of compact, lightweight fourstroke engines; this is where we see the future of our success in the marine industry.” “Since the 1960’s, we have held a firm belief that four-stroke technology is best suited to the marine environment as they are able to best deliver low emission levels, noise abatement and superior fuel consumption.” “For example, a recreational angler who travels long distances to reach remote fishing destinations will value the low fuel consumption of a fourstroke, as well as appreciate the lownoise level while getting there,” Mr Strickland said. “The payload of fuel can also be significantly reduced because of the efficiency of the engine. This allows for additional passengers or gear to be carried, or in the case of commercial fisherman, a greater load of catch to be taken home!” Commercial fishermen who utilise Honda product are, in fact, reporting a huge number of hours of use on their Honda engines, a testimony to the build quality and reliability. “In terms of alternative forms of power for trailerable boat outboard propulsion, Honda does not see any immediate future with electric, hydrogen, diesel or hybrid technologies,” he added. “Honda’s R&D staff will continue to build new technology into each new model as they are released into the market, and our latest BF40 and BF50 releases are excellent examples of products that offer the most refined technology available to date.” “Whilst we are continually conducting R&D in these areas and in some instances releasing non-marine products utilising these technologies, I believe it will be many years before we see any workable solution in marine products due to issues such as safely containing hydrogen, weight restrictions, etc.” “Our advice to ardent boat users, whether that be commercial or leisure use is to make sure they buy the most economical and efficient products available.” “In this way, they can continue to enjoy their boating without it impacting too greatly on the bank balance.” “Where I can see the industry progressing in the short term is in regard to getting even better performance and fuel consumption from fourstroke technology. In this respect, Honda is leading the way.” “At Honda these products will only get better over time so we see our marine business continuing strongly into the future,” he said. While the major boat shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane have been and gone, Mandurah (WA) – the ‘Sanctuary Cove of the west coast’ – is just around the corner. Honda marine manager Chris Schultz predicted the Mandurah Boat Show would follow a similar trend to that of the east coast shows. “While boat show organisers’ figures suggest consumer attendance has been slightly down on previous years, those who have visited the show have been quality buyers,” Chris said. “Honda staff who have attended each of the major shows this season report strong interest in all our products, with genuine enquiries and sales leads filtering through to our dealer network.” “The marine team, both out in the field and at head office, always put in a lot of hard work and long hours during the boat show season –this award recognises our dedication and team spirit.” “Given the popularity of Honda outboards in the West, we expect to be kept pretty busy in Mandurah speaking with the cashed-up people who have come into town from WA’s remote mining communities – people who are generally into their fishing and want the best boats/engines available.” a lot of heads during the east coast shows, it’s been the higher horsepower range – from the BF135 through to the BF225 – that have been the centre of the bulk of consumer enquires. Outboard engines haven’t been the only talking point at the boat shows, either. Honda’s corporate stand stood out as a cut above the rest this year, featuring Darren Milgate’s F1 race boat, the new 2008 CBR1000 Fireblade, the all-new Honda Accord and Honda’s popular Aquatrax PWC range. The display was a true testament to Honda’s diversity and advanced technology that links each product group under the Honda umbrella. In Brisbane, Honda was the proud winner of the ‘best stand of the year’ award in its category. “It’s the first award for Honda of this nature, so we are all extremely pleased,” Chris said. “The marine team, both out in the field and at head office, always put in a lot of hard work and long hours during the boat show season –this award recognises our dedication and team spirit.” The Club Marine Mandurah Boat Show will be held 9-12 October, 2008. Whilst previously only available to specific industries and heavy vehicle operators, the expansion enables “off-road” fuel concessions, providing benefits to professional users of landscape and gardening equipment, including lawnmowers, brushcutters, blowers and the like. “Equipment operating costs are an extremely important consideration for all businesses,” he said. “For contractors using equipment for eight hours a day over the course of five or six days, the fuel savings are considerable. Further benefits of four-stroke equipment include reduced exhaust emissions, quieter operation, minimal vibration and the ability to use regular unleaded fuel rather than an oil and fuel mix - ultimately these factors lead to a more efficient and productive work day. For further information regarding the Federal Government’s fuel tax credit expansion, visit www.ato.gov.au. According to Mr Briffa, the reforms to the scheme are welcome news for the garden care industry, particularly in light of the rising fuel prices, water restrictions and dry conditions experienced in recent years. “The past couple of years have been tough for the garden care industry, with the drought drying out lawns across many areas of the country, coinciding with water restrictions; this has led to a decline in demand for regular garden maintenance,” he said. “For these service providers to now be able to recoup some running costs through their inclusion in the fuel tax scheme is a very encouraging step.” Mr Briffa acknowledged the rising fuel cost pain as a widely felt sentiment in the industry, but is further encouraged by plans for the rebate to double in four years. “In addition to these initial measures, Honda is glad to see that there is policy in place for the fuel tax scheme to offer an even greater rebate (a 50 per cent increase) by 2012” he said. According to Mr Briffa, strong sales of Honda’s advanced four-stroke product range this year marks a trend in which operators of traditional two-stroke equipment are making the transition to more fuel efficient product. “In addition to these initial measures, Honda is glad to see that there is policy in place for the fuel tax scheme to offer an even greater rebate (a 50 per cent increase) by 2012” LOCAL MANUFACTURING KEY TO HONDA’S SUCCESS Leading four-stroke power equipment manufacturer, Honda, continues to lead the way in its commitment to produce products in Australia from its Melbourne manufacturing facility. The recent sale of iconic Australian company, Victa Lawncare, serves as a strong reminder that many well known brands are selling their local manufacturing businesses to multinationals or moving their operations overseas. According to Honda Power Equipment Manager, Ray Briffa, Honda maintains a strong belief that local manufacturing is key to ensuring its product meets demanding Australian conditions. “Honda is dedicated to servicing the needs of the Australian consumer by ensuring our products are designed and manufactured to meet the highest standards necessary to excel in Australia,” he said. “Our commitment toward this end is evident when looking at the expansion of our Campbellfield (Melbourne) manufacturing site to more than double its previous size around 18 months ago - Honda currently produces its entire Buffalo lawnmower range from this facility. The Buffalo range has earned an outstanding reputation as a tough and reliable premium product not only capable of handling our own demanding conditions, but that of the many countries throughout the world to which it is exported. “The product features Honda’s advanced four-stroke technology, which reduces noise and exhaust emissions while maintaining strong power and torque characteristics with reduced fuel consumption.” 10 Recently celebrating its 20th birthday, Honda’s Australia manufacturing facility is fast approaching the production of its 500,000 lawnmower. Producing 10 different lawnmower variants at a rate of almost 40,000 units per year, the facility also turns out five different brushcutter models and employs up to 30 staff over two shifts. Mr Briffa said Honda had a strong ongoing commitment to Australian manufacturing. “During a time where manufacturing in Australia is increasingly under pressure, Honda sees many opportunities in maintaining and further developing its Australian manufacturing base,” he said. The Honda Buffalo lawnmower and brushcutter ranges offer a wide choice of models for both domestic and commercial users. POWER EQUIPMENT “Whereas a few short years ago it may have been sufficient for a contractor’s equipment list to comprise solely of lawnmowers and brushcutters, nowadays those contractors wishing to provide a more complete service also use blowers, hedgecutters, edgers and tillers; it’s a trend that I’m sure will continue in the future.” making it ideal for raised garden beds and narrow rows. Additional benefits include fold-over handles for easy storing and transportation, heavy duty debris shield for increased safety and the convenience of a dual direction off/run/off switch. For those needing additional power for more demanding jobs, the F220 provides a 545 mm tine width and features a powerful yet quiet and efficient GXV57, 57 cc engine while still remaining lightweight at only 24.4 kg. Users of the F220, particularly those with larger jobs, will appreciate the comfort and convenience of the multi-step adjustable handlebars and the precision and balance of the model’s mid-tine configuration. For added safety, the F220 also features a deadman clutch, stopping the tine from rotating when the operator disengages the lever. A popular model with contractors is the FR750 which is powered by the 200 cc GX200 engine, a proven performer that is widely used in a variety of other Honda power equipment. The FR750 has a tine width of 600 mm enabling it to efficiently work considerable areas at a time, and features two forward and one reverse gear to better handle a variety of conditions. HONDA TILLERS IN DEMAND Honda’s range of advanced four-stroke tillers is becoming increasingly popular, particularly among senior gardeners wishing to avoid the often backbreaking work involved in preparing a vegetable patch or reviving a neglected garden bed. According to Honda Power Equipment Manager, Ray Briffa, tillers are also finding new homes with people looking for time savings from their power equipment. “Keen gardeners are adding a tiller to their equipment list in droves,” Mr Briffa said. “There has also been a vast increase in professional garden care contractors who have bought tillers in an effort to further diversify their business and increase their service offerings.” Mr Briffa said that several factors had led to the increase in tiller use. “The consistently dry conditions across many parts of the country means that working the soil can be a difficult and time consuming job, particularly in areas where the soil has a higher clay composition,” he said. “These dry conditions also require more careful planning and maintenance of garden areas by aerating the soil for increased water absorption. “In addition, a tiller will slash soil preparation time, not to mention help avoid the blisters caused by the shovel and hoe.” Mr Briffa said it was also only a matter of time before a great deal more professional garden contractors were adding soil preparation and tilling to their services. “Discerning home and property owners and even body corporates, are increasingly wanting a complete garden care and maintenance service,” Mr Briffa said. “Whereas a few short years ago it may have been sufficient for a contractor’s equipment list to comprise solely of lawnmowers and brushcutters, nowadays those contractors wishing to provide a more complete service also use blowers, hedgecutters, edgers and tillers; it’s a trend that I’m sure will continue in the future.” Spanning five models, Honda’s tiller range begins with the 31 cc Generation II mini four-stroke FG110 and extends to the 240 cc FR800, providing a comprehensive model choice for both the home owner and contractor. Three of the most popular models are the FG110, F220 and FR750 which are particularly versatile and suitable for use in both domestic and commercial applications. Weighing only 14 kg, the FG110 has an adjustable 300 mm tilling width with the ability to till within only a few centimetres of existing plants, Performance in tough or virgin soil also benefits from a lockable differential for improved traction. This tiller is equipped with Honda’s revolutionary Active Rotary System which rotates the tines in opposite directions allowing for better stability, improved ease of use and reduced operator fatigue. Ease of use is also aided by the multi-step, height adjustable handlebars, while a deadman clutch adds to safety. All Honda tillers feature fuel efficient advanced four-stroke engines that do away with the need to mix oil and fuel, provide easy-starting, as well as reduced vibration and exhaust emissions. The dealer meetings were also an opportune occasion to congratulate dealers on their efforts leading to Honda’s strong year-to-date sales performance, with The Honda Shop in Western Australia taking out the award as Australia’s number one Power Equipment Dealer. Held during August in Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast and Perth, the meetings were well attended and provided an excellent opportunity for discussion and exchange of ideas between the Power Equipment dealer network and Honda’s management. Despite a significant increase in equipment sales all across the country, the highly regarded award is only bestowed to the dealership that achieves the largest sales volume of the full range of Honda MPE supplied power equipment for a single dealership. The theme of this year’s meetings was ‘60 Years’, a celebration of Honda’s proud history which began in 1948 with production of the company’s first motorcycle. Five years later, the H-Type engine was released, marking Honda’s entry into power products. Honda MPE Managing Director, Stuart Strickland, began proceedings with an entertaining review of the company’s history while outlining its future direction, in light of global issues including climate change and rising fuel prices. “Despite strong competition and persistent dry conditions across many areas of the country, the last 12 months have proven to be particularly successful for Honda Power Equipment,” Mr Briffa said. “I congratulate The Honda Shop on winning Australia’s number one Power Equipment Dealer award, as well as commend all dealerships across the country for the strong sales results; our performance is testament to Honda’s advanced four-stroke product range which offers many benefits over competing brands.” The company’s long-term commitment to the environment came to the fore with Mr Strickland detailing Honda’s ongoing dedication to research and development covering technologies as diverse as solar, hybridelectric and hydrogen. Honda Power Equipment Manager, Ray Briffa, said the meetings were a huge success. “The dealer meetings covered a wide range of topics with presentations from senior management covering future company direction, sales performance and campaigns, marketing initiatives, training seminars, and parts and service matters,” Mr Briffa said. “In an effort to further increase the value of such meetings for our dealers, we expanded our agenda to include several high profile guest speakers, among these was a business coach and a prominent merchandiser who gave valuable insight into store layout and presentation.” 12 “Honda Power Equipment’s easy-starting nature, combined with low fuel consumption, reduced exhaust and noise emissions, renowned durability and the convenience of not having to mix fuel and oil, are all attractive buying propositions for customers.” To further increase Honda’s consumer awareness, the company announced an aggressive new advertising and marketing campaign including television and print advertisements, complemented by a public relations program and eye-catching new point of sale materials. Dealers were also provided with details of an incentive program to Japan for this financial year’s top 60 performers and their partners. Each meeting concluded with a colourful awards ceremony and gala dinner, allowing participants to unwind and reflect on the year’s success. Honda is one of few manufacturers offering a dedicated four-stroke power equipment range covering equipment including lawnmowers, brushcutters, generators, pumps, engines, tillers and a blower and hedgecutter. Gardening and landscape maintenance are big business in Australia due to the vast suburban expanses, sporting fields and public amenities; the horticultural industry contributes over a billion dollars each year into the economy. In recent years there have been trend changes in the industry as the once favoured and water-dependent English-styled cottage gardens and lawns become unsuitable in one of the driest continents on earth. Akin to the way in which horticulturist and gardening enthusiasts are opting for drought resistant plants and Asian style gardens, so too is there a shift in gardening-care equipment, particularly among professional contractors. The Honda range of Buffalo lawnmowers is considered by many municipal operators, gardening enthusiasts and contractors as a strong, fuel efficient and reliable mower according to owner and horticulturist Chris Smith from CRS Horticulture in Ringwood, Victoria. “I’ve had other lawnmower brands before, as I’ve been in the horticultural business for 11 years, but during this time Honda has proven to be the most reliable and fuel efficient,” Mr Smith said. CRS Horticulture like many other gardening and horticultural businesses, sprouted from humble beginnings. The family business which is operated with the help of wife Sue MacDonald, has an ever-expanding clientele that includes customers as diverse as Vermont Waste Transfer Station, The Department of Justice in Heidelberg, The Golden Dragon Chinese Restaurant and the Manor Inn in Mitcham. According to Mr Smith, having full bookings means downtime needs to be kept to a minimum so CRS Horticulture’s equipment must be reliable as well as user friendly and safe. “My wife Sue and I have never had any problems with the Honda mowers; they are renowned for their easy starting and safety, my wife Sue can attest to that. She is able to operate the mowers as well as any burly contractor,” Mr Smith said. Mr Smith said that rising fuel costs and current weather patterns have had a serious effect on the horticultural industry, as an influx in drought proof gardens and the replacement of traditional lawns with drought-hardy varieties now proving most popular. “Similar to the way in which people have changed to drip irrigation instead of spray for their gardens, businesses such as ours have also had to be proactive and adapt to the change,” Mr Smith said. CRS Horticulture’s equipment list includes three HRU197 Buffalo Bull mowers which are yielding a good return on investment, according to Mr Smith. “Some of the outstanding features of the HRU197 are its power, torque and fuel economy compared to other mowers in the same specification range,” Mr Smith said. “Being a four-stroke engine means time isn’t wasted mixing fuel or having the expense of purchasing premixed blends. The four-strokes also provide better fuel efficiency which is an important consideration to the business’ bottom line.” Compliance with municipal laws and noise regulations has also been a contributing factor in Mr Smith’s Honda lawnmower purchase decision. “We work a lot in quiet suburban neighbourhoods and on weekends when people don’t appreciate being woken by raucous power equipment. Noise is a major OH&S issue, but with the Hondas we have little to worry about. The HRU 197 is one of the quietest mowers we have used, and it enables us greater flexibility to operate at certain times, especially in the mornings and on weekends,” Mr Smith said. 13 THE ENGINE ROOM Global brand slogan combined with Honda logo www.hondampe.com.au Global brand slogan BELL FIRE EQUIPMENT WINS PRESTIGIOUS DESIGN AWARD The Bell Fire Equipment Company of Bunbury, Western Australia has received an Australian Design Mark at this year’s prestigious Australian International Design Awards, for its ‘400 SPACESAVER’ slip-on fire control unit. Overseen by the Industrial Design Council of Australia (IDCA), this high profile council has recognised numerous Australian icons in the past including the Hills Hoist, Holden Monaro, Cochlear ear implant, Décor wine cooler, and the test series cricket helmet just to name a few. The award was judged on a strict criterion enforced by IDCA’s multidisciplinary panel consisting of both local and international adjudicators. Judged for innovation, visual appeal, functionality, quality of manufacturer, human factors, environmental sustainability, ergonomics, semantics and safety, the 400 SPACESAVER Fire Control Unit is already finding favour amongst the country’s fire fighting bodies. In commenting on the recent award, Bell Fire Managing Director, Jim Ponsonby, said extensive research and planning had taken place in the development of the 400 SPACESAVER. “The success of the company today is evidence of hard work and experience gained over 35 years in the fire protection industry and working with bushfire brigades around Australia. Together with local companies and government departments, we were able to tailor our products to their needs,” he said. Designed to carry 400 litres while taking up minimal space on a tray or styleside utility, the 400 SPACESAVER offers comprehensive valve and coupling flow controls, high pressure discharge revolving hose reel and Honda’s GX200-powered pumpset with a suction/ discharge facility. A number of special features give the Bell Firefighter 400 SPACESAVER Slip-On Fire Control Unit its industry leading recognition. Unlike most portable fire units, the Bell Firefighter is not fitted onto a metal base frame; instead a strong mould-formed Bellglass fiberglass tank is used and all the unit’s components are fitted to the top of the water tank reducing size and increasing practicality. The 400 SPACESAVER proudly carries the ‘Australian-made’ kangaroo logo, with Honda’s GX200 engine and the plumbing being the only imported components, according to Jim. has not performed to expectation,” he said. “I see a lot of systems come in for maintenance or repair after the summer fire season and the operators which range from farmers to Government departments have never had any problems with the GX200 or any other of the Honda range of engines we use.” The prestigious Australian Design Mark is a far cry from the company’s modest beginnings as a part-time business started in a farm shed in the 1980s. “By understanding the needs of our market, we’ve been able to develop a range of products that suit the purposes of our customers very well,” Jim said. The Bell Firefighter SPACESAVER is also available in 600 and 800 litre capacities. “Bell Fire has used Honda products for the last 20 years and the reason we use Honda is because there is no other four-stroke engine in the world equal to it,” he said. According to Jim, Bell Fire’s endorsement of the Honda GX200 follows the engine’s outstanding long-term performance in demanding situations. “Because our systems are carried on the back of off-road vehicles and are used in extreme conditions and under great duress, we require something that is extremely tough – the Honda GX200 has never failed us nor have we heard of any instances in the field where the engine COX ANNOUNCES HONDA VTWIN POWER AT THEIR DEALER CONFERENCE Cox’s dealers from around Australia recently gathered in the Gold Coast for their National Dealer conference. It was their first chance to discover the expanded range of Honda-powered ride-on mowers; including the newly released GXV530 Vtwin. The GXV530 is available on the ‘Lawn Boss’ and ‘Stockman Series III’, giving customers the choice to select Honda’s premium engine across a selection of models. Dealers enjoyed sampling the new line-up and learning about a host of upgrades to the Cox mower range. The last few years’ climatic conditions and exchange rate pressures have made conditions tough for Australian ride-on makers, but as Cox’s Managing Director, Ken McColl, declared to the dealers, “We’re back! Back with quality products that are genuinely competitive.” A large part of this renewed quality and competitiveness is a significant investment in robotic welding. Not only does this eliminate the need for almost 50 manual welders, but it has also eliminated welding quality problems. A similar investment in new technology has also improved the Cox Friction Drive system. 14 These improvements to the mowers coincide with a growing line-up of Honda-powered Cox mowers. Most significant is the introduction of Honda’s class leading GXV530. Peter Singleton, Honda’s OEM Manager, explains the key features and benefits of this engine; “In a market dominated by single-cylinder engines, the Vtwin OHC design offers customers unbeatable smoothness. This maximises user comfort by reducing vibration and noise,” he says; “Plus the big 530cc size and ultra-modern design give class-leading performance and fuel economy, saving time and money.” Peter further explains the complimentary relationship Honda has with local quality manufacturers like Cox, “Honda covers a wide range of products in Australia from generators to motorcycles to cars, but we have no ride-on,” he says; “Locally manufactured ride-ons with Honda power are the perfect choice for our customers.” Cox offer Honda’s single cylinder GXV390 and Vtwin GXV530 in their Lawn Boss and Stockman Series III ranges. Selected variations of 32” and 38” cutting widths, with hydrostatic or Cox Friction Drive are available.
