ALLEN • Musical Biography (abridged) – Professional Highlights • Being an Atlanta native, Phillip E. Allen has been honored to invest his time, talent and energies in two very different worlds of music making … the highly competitive and demanding arena of professional secular music, dramatic theatre, and show business, … and the deeply rewarding and spiritually fulfilling ministry of church pipe organ and orchestral music. Phillip has also been presented with many opportunities over the years to minister to musicians as well as church congregations – leading them to use their talents and abilities to worship Almighty God. The blessings Phillip has enjoyed in the professional secular area range from composing the festive theme song for the 1985 Macy’s Christmas Parade, to having his compositions heard on stages around the world. The most noted being: Off-Broadway, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and The Beverly Hills Playhouse in Beverly Hills, California. In addition to being awarded the highly prestigious and coveted Peabody Award for his work on television, he produced the first original, inspiring theme song for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and composed original music for The Jerusalem 3000 Celebration played by The Israel Philharmonic and conducted by the world-famous symphony conductor Zubin Mehta. Phillip has had many opportunities in the metropolitan Atlanta area where he has conducted prominent church orchestras for over 30 years, served as Principal Organist for numerous churches, and enjoyed ministering to a wide range of talented and dedicated musicians, both professional and non-professional. The great reward and hope which lies in Phillip’s heart is … to know that God has touched many lives with the love of God through his heart, spirit, talent and many endeavors, … to always enjoy life and live every moment to the fullest through sheer joy and laughter, … and to make a mark for the utmost highest of excellence through his God-given talent and art for making music – music befitting only a king, … the King of Kings! “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think only about such things!” (Philippians 4:8) May the credo of the great musical genius Johann Sebastian Bach, who completed each and every of his numerous musical compositions with writing these words in the end margins, “Soli Deo Gloria!” (“To God only, alone be all the glory!”), be a hallmark of inspiration and aspiration for Phillip as well as for us all. • Musical Biography (unabridged) – Professional Credentials • With seemingly endless doors of opportunity presenting themselves, it is quite humbling to realize that more than ninety percent of the opportunities noted herein were completely providential, sent as a door opened by God Himself across Phillip’s path. May it always be said that it is with a heart of deep gratitude, a servant spirit of humility, along with a great sense of thankfulness for a wonderful life Phillip has lived in the joyful service as one of God’s Musicians. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Phillip first began his education at Georgia State University as a Piano Performance Major studying with Artist-in-Residence, Dr. William Masselos (who later became a Professor of Applied Piano at the Julliard School of Music). Phillip then continued and completed his education with a B.A. Degree in Organ Performance, and a Minor in Orchestration with an emphasis on Composition and Conducting. During Phillip’s college years, many opportunities presented themselves for the working musician-in-training: the usual weddings, recitals, concerts and accompanying, along with playing for professional theatrical productions, both traveling Broadway road-shows as well as local endeavors – which led to a totally unexpected profession. In 1984, Phillip became the Music Director and Composer/Arranger/Orchestrator for Stage Directions, Inc. in Atlanta. During this period, many new stage and theatre works came from the composing pen of Phillip E. Allen including the highly energetic and comical music for FUNNYBONE, additional music for the children’s musical KIDSTUFF, the score for the sweeping drama THE BOY KING (which was featured at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and later won its author a highly prestigious Peabody Award for excellence in television), the score and orchestration for the St. Patrick’s Day fantasy GREEN, the one-act musicals FROWN DOWN and APATHOLIOUS, the score and orchestration for the Theodore Roosevelt musical TEDDY’S BEAR, the score and orchestration for THE TOP TEN (commissioned for The Israel Expo ‘85 International at the Atlanta Jewish Community Center, and produced by many theaters around the United States, notably The Beverly Hills Playhouse), and the theme song for the 1985 Nationally Televised Macy’s Christmas Parade. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC The Beverly Hills Playhouse 1985 Macy’s Christmas Parade, New York City The year 1989 saw the creation of CHRIS CROSS, a large-scale theatrical musical production about the life and times of Christopher Columbus, for which Phillip composed the dramatic score and orchestration. In 1991, CHRIS CROSS came to the 5,000seat theatre at The Atlanta Civic Center and was seen by over 30,000 people. With this production, CHRIS CROSS and its composer began an association with Mr. Xavier Roberts (of Cabbage Patch Dolls and Furskins fame). During the Quincentennary year of the Discovery of the New World, 1992, CHRIS CROSS toured Europe during the late summer with performance stops in Frankfurt, Paris, Palos, Spain (on the same boat dock and on the exact day Columbus sailed for the new world 500 years ago), and concluding in Seville, Spain for the 1992 World’s Fair. Other notable projects include … CATCHIN’ A DREAM (which premiered at the Atlanta Civic Center in June of 1990, and went on to tour Europe during that summer with Phillip’s score and orchestration) … along with beginning to write and orchestrate for Maestro Albert Coleman and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra in the fall of 1990. New doors of opportunity opened in the world of commercial music in advertising, Phillip completed several projects for Jack Morton Productions, a national commercial film/video production company. Kentucky Fried Chicken, LifeSavers, and Planters Peanuts were among the national firms that utilized Phillip’s music in their advertising including the new product, Gummy Savers, which ran a commercial spot seen nationally on television using Phillip’s music. December of 1992 saw Phillip become a national semi-finalist composer in the Anthem America Contest to select a new national anthem for the United States. As the only composer/lyricist chosen from Georgia, Phillip’s song “The Spirit Of This Land,” placed in the national ranking as a semi-finalist composition. In January of 1994, Phillip was named Best Musical Director in Atlanta-1993 by The Atlanta Coalition for the Performing Arts and The Atlanta Cultural Affairs Commission for his ongoing contribution to the world of professional musical theatre in the Atlanta area. A national project for the U.S. Forestry Service utilized Phillip’s music for a new cutting-edge computer technology public relations project emphasizing tree preservation. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games discovered the talents of Phillip E. Allen and put him to work assisting with preparation for the 1996 Olympic Games. One of the several projects from ACOG was to rearrange, orchestrate and produce the original theme song for the 1996 Olympic Games entitled, “The Dream,” which was used as the primary song to procure, promote and publicize the Games in Atlanta. Phillip was honored to receive a commission to write music for the Israel Philharmonic, conducted by the noted, world-renown Zubin Mehta. The internationally famous Conductor Zubin Mehta conducts the Israel Philharmonic playing Phillip’s music for the landmark “Jerusalem 3000 Celebration.” Another professional affiliation began in 1997 when Phillip began to compose and orchestrate the three-hour score for the nationally recognized and hugely successful annual production of The Atlanta Passion Play, which draws over 45,000 people annually. Along the way, God has touched the lives of many people and musicians through the wisely invested talents He has given to Phillip. There have also been the honors and privileges of serving on the staff of many Atlanta-area churches, a note-worthy few being: First Baptist Church of Atlanta, First Baptist Church of Marietta, Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta, Woodlawn Baptist Church in Decatur, First Baptist Church of Conyers, Eastwood Baptist Church in Conyers, Peachtree Corners Baptist Church in Norcross and Due West United Methodist Church in Kennesaw. Phillip has had opportunities to be used of God to have a direct, personal impact directly in the lives of numerous church orchestra musicians (and their families) in the Atlanta area, as well as with countless professional musicians. He has had the honor to serve three times as co-host of the National Metro Instrumental Director’s Conference and was a driving force to help launch the National Expo Instrumental Conference (to which he has contributed orchestral and choral music as an independent publisher). In 2004, Phillip was commissioned to conceive, arrange and orchestrate a full-length four-movement symphony on the character of Almighty God. Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover, Alabama was observing a year-long study in 2005 on the attributes and character of God and His deep impact on our lives. So, the idea was birthed for a musical work for choir, orchestra and organ to correlate with this study. What proved to be a very deep, impactful, and thought-provoking journey for the worshipper/listener of “Symphony to the Most High God,” first was traveled by its’ writer as he explored … I. The Attributes of God Character … II. God’s Redemption through Jesus Christ … III. Expressing our Gratefulness to God … and IV. Exalting and Celebrating Our Mighty God. The sanctuary at Hunter Street Baptist Church as the premiere of “Symphony to the Most High God” is presented, Sunday morning, November 6, 2005. Having had opportunities to travel and tour extensively both domestically and internationally, Phillip has had the privilege to watch the hearts and lives being touched by God through his music on several continents and in numerous countries outside of the USA such as: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Lichtenstein, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Ecuador. During the past years, Phillip has begun to help rescue and restore a part of our unique American musical instrument heritage. Birthed and invented in the USA in the 1910’s and 1920’s, these magnificent instruments are fast disappearing and being discarded … this musical instrument is the Unit Orchestra or the Theatre Pipe Organ. In 2009, Phillip became a part of the staff of Theatre Organists who entertain at The Strand Theatre on the historic Marietta Square, a position which he currently holds. Many fine local, national and international organizations have been an ongoing part of Phillip’s life over the years. From an ability and talent perspective, the areas of Phillip’s expertise primarily lay with composing, arranging, orchestrating and conducting orchestral and vocal music in many styles including: Hollywood, Broadway, pop, ballad, gospel, country, contemporary and classical. Additional skills and expertise lie in audio engineering, album/CD production, musical theatre event production and professional musician contracting, as well as being an accomplished professional organist and pianist. As an Organist, Phillip received an invitation to play the January 2006 dedicatory concert event for the new large custom fourmanual Rodgers Digital Organ at Idlewild Baptist Church in Tampa, Florida – in their brand new location and 6,000-seat sanctuary. It was a great experience and humbling to be on the same program with international concert pianist Mr. Larry Dalton as he played the dedication of their new Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The 6,000‐seat sanctuary and the custom four‐manual Rodgers Digital Concert Organ at Idlewild Baptist Church in Tampa, Florida – January 2006. Recently, Phillip was honored to receive several important positions as both an organist and accompanist ... in 2010 He was appointed Music Associate/Organist at The First Baptist Church of Marietta; that same year he became Organist for a newly-formed orchestra Symphony on the Square; in 2012 Phillip was invited by Dr. Jon Duncan to become Organist for The Sons of Jubal and in 2013 Frank Boggs appointed Phillip as Organist for The Georgia Festival Chorus. Today, he remains very active in all of these recent positions. It’s important to note that during his years of service at the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, an additional momentous life-altering event occurred. God brought into Phillip’s life a wonderfully brilliant and talented person who would become his soul-mate. In July of 2001 he married his best friend … Mandy. Together, they are fully committed to a life filled with the joy and fun of serving God, loving each other and reaching out to people … adopting the credo, “We view each brand new day as a great adventure from God!” Presently, as a free-lance composer, arranger, orchestrator, conductor, producer, organ design consultant and co-owner of a national publishing venture with his wife Mandy – www.NewOrchestraMusic.com – there is a bright future ahead as God continues to open door after door of wonderful opportunities for dedicated service to Him and witness of Him! The 1986 “Living Christmas Tree” production presented at ROSWELL STREET BAPTIST CHURCH in Marietta, Georgia; Phillip is seen seated at the Organ console. All set to “rise from the pit” Phillip is ready to entertain from a large four‐manual Theatre Organ at THE STRAND THEATRE on the historic Marietta Square.
