10 9/ 00 t2 or ep lR nu a An Katonah Museum of Art F r o m t he D irector The Katonah Museum of Art thrives because of you – our community, our audience. We had a vibrant year at the Museum, despite the struggling economy. Our exhibition Dress Codes featured international artists who use clothing as a metaphor for global, as well as personal, concerns; Bold, Cautious, True paired excerpts of Walt Whitman’s writing with some of the most important artworks of the Civil War era; and The Art of Contemporary Puppet Theater showed us how the magical and often daring art of puppetry can explore a spectrum of ideas and emotions. This broad range of art displayed over the past fiscal year epitomizes the KMA’s mission to “present diverse exhibitions that explore ideas about art, culture, and society.” Education remains the driving force behind the Museum’s programs, specifically the Hispanic outreach initiatives, which are expanding in the next year. The attendance record for a single day was upheld this year with the 27th annual Young Artists exhibition. Over 1,000 visitors converged on the galleries within a five-hour window of time on opening day. We are grateful to our donors, both large and small – you challenge us to reach higher in order to make the KMA even more relevant. We could not have done this without the generosity of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, Board of Overseers, members, community donors, volunteers, and staff. Thank you from the bottom of our collective hearts. Neil Watson Executive Director Board of Trustees Victoria F. Robert Storr, Dean of the Yale School of Art, was the first to receive this honor. (October 2009) Support provided the donors to the Himmel Endowment Fund (see Special Events Patrons on pg. 15) as well as Bedford Magazine & Morris Media Group, Chappaqua Crossing, and Crabtree’s Kittle House. Feast Your Eyes (FYE) luncheons… During each exhibition, guests who are new to the Katonah Museum of Art are introduced to the current show with a catered “feast” at the Museum, followed by an in-depth exhibition tour. (January and April 2010) Literary Lunch Nationally acclaimed authors Elizabeth Berg and Sue Miller were featured at the 11th Annual Literary Lunch at Tappan Hill. Benjamin Cheever moderated the lively conversation. (May 28, 2009) Neil Watson, Betty Himmel, and Tony Himmel IMAGINE MORE Gala On one of the most spectacularly warm evenings of the spring, guests arrived in the Sculpture Garden to celebrate the Katonah Museum of Art. The soldout event honored two of the Museum’s long-time leaders, Vickie and Steve Morris. Guests enjoyed cocktails in the wooded Sculpture Garden, followed by dinner, a live auction, and a great night of dancing under a magnificent tent. (May 2010) Katonah Museum of Art Benjamin Cheever and Elizabeth Berg 3 E x p er ien ce A rt In the Beitzel and Righter Galleries Dress Codes: Clothing as Metaphor surprised, delighted, and challenged visitors with its innovative artworks fabricated from unusual materials, ranging from Power Ranger cards, worn-out shoes, and pennies, to nails, coffee filters, and balloons. The 36 featured artists used clothing as metaphor to explore such issues as personal identity, feminism, immigration, economics, politics, even war and religion. The idea may sound gimmicky, but the show is provocative and compelling.... This show will appeal to visitors who enjoy both fashion and art, but that is only the beginning of its appeal. It is a celebration of creativity, in particular the way in which the crosspollination of creative fields has resulted in artistic forms unimaginable just a few decades ago.” –Benjamin Genocchio, The New York Times The landmark exhibition Bold Cautious, True: Walt Whitman and American Art of the Civil War Era was the KMA’s most popular of the year, with over 10,000 visitors attending the show and its related programs. Whitman’s elegiac words introduced the portraits, landscapes, battlefield scenes, and genre pictures depicting the heroism of the common soldier, the flight of escaped slaves, and the courage of the women and children left behind. (October 18, 2009 – January 24, 2010) Support provided by the Mary L. Beitzel Fund, the Sally W. Righter Fund, ArtsWestchester, with funds from the Westchester County Government, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Museum’s Exhibition Patrons. Marking its 27th year, Young Artists ’10 showcased art by 300 seniors from 36 high schools throughout Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, and Fairfield counties. The Museum welcomed 1,033 visitors on opening day! Also on view was Thinking Through Art, an exhibition of student work created during a year-long collaboration between the KMA and four area schools. (February 7 – 14, 2010). Support provided byYoung Artists exhibition was sponsored by Richard and Martha Handler and Rebecca and Arthur Samberg Over 1,650 children visited The Art of Contemporary Puppet Theater, making it one of the most popular exhibitions in recent KMA history for school groups. This exhibition used puppetry to give form to the internal and otherwise invisible worlds of emotions and ideas. It featured sophisticated and often daring work by contemporary puppeteers, painters, film and media artists in dramatic installations. (February 28 – June 13, 2010) Support provided by ArtsWestchester, with funds from the Westchester County Government, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Museum’s Exhibition Patrons. AV Design & Integration of Elmsford, New York, generously loaned the audio/visual equipment for the installation. Young Artists ‘10 Whether visitors come with or without children, for a performance or just to browse, they will see an exhibition [The Art of Contemporary Puppet Theater] rare to this area. –The New York Times The Art of Contemporary Puppet Theater Installation view, Righter Gallery Katonah Museum of Art 4 It would be a disservice to recommend the new exhibit at the Katonah Museum of Art, Bold, Cautious, True: Walt Whitman and American Art of the Civil War Era as solely of interest to Civil War buffs and Whitman fans. Of incredible scope, this stunning show is a must-see for anyone who desires a greater understanding of the cumulative American identity. –Catherine Allen, The Record Review Sanford R. Ellen Kozak was the second artist in a series of solo exhibitions showcasing contemporary artwork inspired by the Hudson River. Kozak’s lyrical waterscapes straddled the line between representation and abstraction to capture molten scenes of saturated hues and subtle movement (July 12 – October 4, 2009). The final artist in the Hudson River Trilogy, Alison Moritsugu, addressed themes of exploration and conquest in her landscape paintings on cut logs. Her wallpaper installation, while beautiful, depicted invasive plants that threaten to destroy flora and fauna native to the Hudson River Valley. (October 18, 2009 – January 24, 2010). Steve Tobin Katonah Steelroots, 2009 Welded steel (rust patina), 22 x 8 x 8 feet Courtesy of the artist On the South Lawn Steve Tobin designed his monumental sculpture Katonah Steelroots specifically for the KMA. The work’s twisting tendrils soared 24 feet above the South Lawn to welcome visitors to the Museum. I found I learned so much along with my students. –3rd Grade Teacher Wampus Elementary School E ducation and C ommunity C ollaboration The Museum’s diverse exhibitions, covering a broad range of art and humanities topics, offered rich learning opportunities for grades K-12. During the year, over 7,000 students from Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, and Fairfield Counties came to the KMA to make connections between the art, their own lives, and the world around them. Approximately 250 classes visited the KMA this year, each with an average attendance of fifty children. The docent allowed children to use puppets available during his presentation for a handson experience. Children were mesmerized. Thank you for continuing to be such a wonderful and supportive community partner. –Preschool Director Westcop Mt. Kisco Head Start Students writing original poetry inspired by works in the Bold, Cautious, True exhibition We are involved in a unit exploring Japan’s Bunraku Puppetry. This was a perfect enrichment. This field trip was beyond our expectations for an art museum outside of New York City. I am a huge fan of the Katonah Museum of Art now! Thank you!! –High School Theater Teacher EF International Academy The New York State Council for the Arts (NYSCA) awarded the Museum’s innovative Thinking Through Art program an Empire State Partnership grant for the 2009/10 academic year. The grant helps build and support in-depth arts education collaborations between cultural organizations and schools. Exhibitions Inform Professional Development This past year 130 educators participated in six professional development programs designed for kindergarten through 12th grade teachers. The KMA’s exhibition Bold, Cautious, True inspired programs designed to enrich the study of American history and social studies. The winter/spring exhibition, the Art of Contemporary Puppet Theater, inspired two workshops led by professional puppet creators and performers. THE KMA BUS FUND IS SHRINKING Requests for assistance from KMA’s Bus Fund doubled during fiscal year 2009-10 due in part to the success of our outreach programs to underserved populations. Most requests came from classroom teachers whose school districts have eliminated bus trips due to budget cuts. Please help support the KMA bus fund, thereby making our vital outreach programs sustainable. Contributions can be made online at www.katonahmuseum.org/.give. Thank you! Katonah Museum of Art Hispanic Outreach Expands Thank you to The Goldie Anna Charitable Trust, The Joseph and Sophia Abeles Foundation, Inc., Bloomberg, Steven A. and Alexandra M. Cohen Foundation Foundation, Diebold Institute for Public Policy Studies, Inc, and Goldman Sachs for supporting the KMA’s Hispanic Outreach Program. The collaboration with Tarrytowns Evenstart continued to grow while the program expanded to include First Steps Early Childhood Program in Ossining as well as the Ossining Children’s Center. 6 F amily P rogramming The Learning Center The Learning Center, which is open to the public freeof-charge, is the only interactive space in the community where children, with an adult caregiver, can drop in to explore, interpret, and create art. In less than four weeks, one 40-foot tent created an exciting space for over 1,800 people, including 600 visitors to the KMA’s Puppet Family Day and four puppetry performances presented by classes who returned to perform for family, friends, and school children. Four bi-lingual puppet performing events, a variety of public programs, and KMA membership events took advantage of this temporary outdoor space. Support for the tent provided by Carole and Norman Alexander.
