Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency Final Concert... A scene from the final residency graduates' concert -- June 28, 2015 -- at World Cafe Live at the Queen Excerpted from a review of the final concert by Lindsay Podraza (Editor/Contributor at Town Square Delaware): “On Sunday, I headed to the Queen Theater for a free (almost 2-hour) jazz concert... Before the performances, Tina Betz, executive director of the Light Up the Queen Foundation, warned the audience "their socks were about to get knocked off!". I wasn’t wearing socks, but if I had been after that concert, they would’ve been blown off! Broken up into performances from two quartets and a quintet, the 13 Boysie Lowery Living Jazz residents played 13 of their own original compositions. These residents learned an incredible amount of music in just two weeks, and it all flowed so well that it was impossible to tell what was practiced and what may have been improvised. Highlights: “Longboard,” composed by drummer Sebastian Chiriboga, was a mesmerizing hit that took the audience out to sea. Watching his facial expressions during the four performances he played in was also great—he was feeling the jazz! Pianist Quentin Walston was exceptional on the piano. “Anthem for a Honeybee,” composed by guitarist Julian Jayme, fantastically buzzed with the rhythm of jazz-infused guitar. Each composition was commendable, but “Nothing But the Truth,” composed by drummer Dominic Palombi, brought down the house. If there’s such a thing as rock ’n’ roll in jazz, this was it. One woman felt the beat so strongly she got up from her seat to dance. If I had it on iTunes I’d probably play it every morning as a pump-up song. I don’t know if next summer’s jazz residency concert will be free. Regardless, count me in—it’ll be a lot of fun, and well worth it.” 3 of 12 Newsletter of the Light Up the Queen Foundation, Wilmington, DE - Issue XV - II ON STAGE! On Screen/In Person Film Series: The Film Lineup for the 2015-2016 Season The film lineup for the 2015-2016 On Screen/In Person film touring program is now available. On Screen/In Person brings some of the best new independent American films and their creators to communities across the midAtlantic region. In partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Light Up the Queen Founda-tion will be screening this season’s films at the Film Brothers Co-Op** in Wilmington. This year's films, focusing on the arts and women's issues, will follow deaf poets as they enter the world of ASL slam poetry, a choreographer using dance for healing and escape, and a retrospective on the remarkable career of visual artist Miriam Beerman. Audiences will learn the story of hidden female soldiers during the Civil War, the crisis of rape faced by women and children in Liberia, and the incredible musical legacy of the Carter and Cash families. The filmmakers will be present for public screenings which include question and answer sessions with the audience. The purpose of On Screen/In Person is to provide screening opportunities for inde-pendent filmmakers; increase access to film programming of excellence to audiences across the region, especially in communities that would otherwise have little access to this work; and to provide communities with opportunities that lead to greater under-standing of the filmmakers' work and enhance their viewing experience. About Light Up The Queen Foundation Board of Directors The Light Up The Queen Foundation, a Delaware 501c3 non-profit corporation, is dedicated to the revival of the Queen Theater in Wilmington, Delaware, and to assuring that The Queen becomes a catalyst for building community. Michael J. Hare President The Queen Theater re-opened its doors on April 1, 2011. Originally built in the 1800s, the Queen sat dormant and left to ruin since 1959. With water pouring through her ceilings, her walls caving in and her façade crumbling, this regal theater had become a faded memory of Market’s Street’s vibrant past. The significance of the Queen’s re-opening reaches far beyond its walls, symbolizing the tremendous commitment our community has to ensuring downtown Wilmington becomes a lively city where all arts venues, businesses and restaurants thrive. The goal of the Foundation is simple – to build community through music, the arts and community engagement. With the renovation complete, LUQ is committed to ensuring the Queen Theater is a catalyst that fosters life-long interest and appreciation for music and the arts. Built on the tenet that the benefits of the arts should be available to everyone and thanks to generous support from government and philantropic granting agencies, and individual donors, LUQ provides hands-on high-quality arts enrichment programs to local schools, other non-profit organizations, and the general public at low or no cost to participate.
