BLKRT U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 102 Commerce, Texas 75428 June 2015 A PUBLICATION OF THE COMMERCE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Gr and Opening and Ribbon Cutting for the New Hunt Regional Emergency Hospital By Paul Voss Sunday was a great day for the City of Commerce and Hunt Regional Healthcare in Commerce, Texas. The new facility at 2800 Highway 24 had their Grand Opening Sunday at 2pm with great fan fare. Many Commerce citizens and city leaders came out to tour the new facility and get to witness the new Emergency Hospital opening. There were some good speeches by Ron Wensel the Chairman of the Hunt Memorial Hospital District Board, John Heatherly assistant administrator for support services, Beckey Thompson community advocate for the election to build the hospital and Dan Jones President ofTexas A&M University-Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce welcomed them as well with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Alicia Wittkopf one of the Directors for Hunt Regional Healthcare and the staff of the new hospital provided refreshments and self guided tours of the facility. The Hospital Board was on hand to make everyone welcome. Monday May 18 will be the official opening of the new hospital. Page 2 CHAMBER P re s ide nt ’s L e tt er Dear Commerce Community, I usually take this opportunity to provide a sneak peak into the coming month, and or, provide insight on how our community is excelling. While I don’t plan on going completely negative, I feel compelled to share examples of complacency, and how that may help or hurt members and businesses of our community. For one, I am a frequent diner at Plain and Fancy off of Monroe St. Call it pregnancy cravings, but I love their fancy chicken salad, fresh fruit, wonderful hospitality and the easy way to get a well-balanced meal for a long day at work. This was also the same restaurant who faced a hardship last year when construction on Monroe St completely paralyzed their potential and success. I remember thinking, “Will they make it?” I, and many others in the community, stayed loyal, and they persevered past the construction and are thriving today. I do intentionally dine at our other Chamber restaurants, however, Plain and Fancy is where I am content. On the other hand, it was recently shared with me about the negative effects of complacency. [I will only use our Chamber board and office practices as an example to avoid calling anyone out.] Where do we turn to quote or pay for services required for our office operations or event functions? How do we make these decisions? Well, it is customary to seek the services offered by our own Chamber business to bid on first. And, if there aren’t any Chamber businesses to select from, we seek outside of our membership. Unintentionally, and I am guilty of it myself, we became complacent in selecting the same business more times than one because of recent work, strengthened relationship from before and convenience. We become the cliché, “We’ve always done it this way.” This is where complacency negatively affects our members and businesses. Everybody needs our love and business here in Commerce, TX and beyond (We have Chamber members in Greenville and Sulphur Springs, too.). This month’s President’s letter was not meant to preach or criticize our own business practices, but to be aware of how our relationships and business choices affect everyone in our tight community. Reflect. Reach out. Ponder on where you can help those in hardship and where you can diversify in services. I know I am going to make an extra effort to avoid complacency wherever possible. Lastly, I will be on maternity leave for the month of June, July and parts of August. While I will be active with the Chamber behind the scenes later in July, Velvete Womack, Chamber Vice President, will be taking lead until I “return” fully at the end of August. Sincerely, Lisa Martinez - Chamber President Executive Director of Marketing Communications Texas A&M University-Commerce Commerce Chamber of Commerce Mission Statement The purpose of the Chamber of Commerce shall be to promote the common business interests of merchants and citizens living and working in the City of Commerce, Texas, and in the immediate area; promote the free enterprise system; encourage the commercial, industrial and agricultural development of the City of Commerce and the immediate area; assume a role of active leadership in community improvement. The scholarship has been awarded for over 20 years from an endowment established by Bill Martin Jr. The symposium awarded the “Spirit of Martin” award to Dr. Linda Henrie, retiring Superintendent of Mesquite ISD. Rheba Icenhower, co-chair of the symposium from 2004-2014, was also presented with a new award, the “Rheba Martin Icenhower Service Award”. “The Curriculum and Instruction faculty wanted to honor her for her ‘generosity of spirit’ and longtime service to the department,” said Dr. Martha Foote, professor and department head of Curriculum and Instruction. “The faculty decided that creating an award in her name was a great way to honor her legacy.” The Bill Martin Jr Memorial Symposium also featured the Authors of Class Writing Competition which is open to kindergarten through eighth grade. This year’s competition featured students from six area schools and over 60 authored books. The competition strives to provide children with both creative and communication skills by having students write and illustrate their own books under the guidance of a teacher, staff or parent. “The Department of Curriculum and Instruction hosts this yearly symposium to honor the legacy of Dr. Bill Marin Jr, one of the greats in children’s literature and major friend and donor to A&M-Commerce,” said Dr. Foote. “Bill Martin Jr was a master in using rhythm and rhyme to capture children’s hearts and keep the words reverberating in their heads.” Celebrating 125 years www.tamuc.edu Join us for the 125th Anniversary Reveal Thursday, April 24, 2014 3PM-6PM | A&M-Commerce Amphitheater The Bill Martin Jr Memorial Symposium Steering Committee was cochaired by Dr. Josh Thompson and Susan Bishop, faculty members in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be eaten. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must out run the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle, When the sun comes up, you’d better be running. ITALIAN FOOD You know that this is so true in the business world, the successful businessman or woman knows that there are forces ready to take them down at any given minute. If they are to survive in the real world they have to be running at full speed all the time to make their business live. Their employees will fail, their suppliers will fail, their customers will fail, their families will fail and ultimately their community will fail if they are not on top of their game every day. Today is the most important day in your history. Of course we need to think about tomorrow and plan for the future however, we as business people need to do it today. Every day is the first day of the rest of our lives. We have to get up every day running and every day we need to learn from what we did yesterday. We need to learn to market our product we need to be confident as to what we do. The concept of opening your doors to customers and they will automatically flock to your business, is a policy set up to fail. You must sell yourself and your business. Promotion, Promotion, Promotion and keep your name on out there and on everyone’s lips. Like in the wilds of Africa, it is the survival of the fittest and only the strong survive. Do not let competition make you weak let it make you and your business strong. Thrive on the comparison while having the reflexes to cease all opportunities to improve. Even though success can be short lived, there is no reason to think that the roller coaster has to come down from its climb. You just have to realize it is not a roller coaster it’s a business in perpetual motion if you dare. So dream big with a solid plan while pushing the envelope and never expecting anything but success. Welcome to the winner’s circle. Feast!!! Page 8 June 2015 Political Science department and Pi Sigma Alpha hosted Holocaust Days of Remembr ance A&M-Commerce students attend Disney College Progr am By Julia Gessner Elementary education major, Brianeka “Bre” Smith, recently participated in the Disney College Program. The Disney College Program gives students the opportunity to work and live at Disney World while earning a salary and college credit by taking classes in Florida or online at their home university. The Texas A&M University-Commerce Department of Political Science recently hosted Holocaust Days of Remembrance with the assistance of the Dallas Holocaust Museum/Center for Education and Tolerance and the Pi Sigma Alpha political science honor society. The three day event included guest speakers and student presentations. “The Holocaust Days of Remembrance is my favorite program that Pi Sigma Alpha honor society organizes. The political science department has a strong relationship with the Dallas Holocaust museum,” said Pi Sigma Alpha honor society member Courtney Fleming. “For the past three years we’ve invited survivors, refugees and experts to come and speak to our students and students from surrounding high schools and next year’s event will be just as educational and inspiring.” Guest speaker, Margaret Furst, shared her experiences on the KinderTransport, an effort that rescued nearly 10,000 Jewish children from the Holocaust by transporting them to the United Kingdom. Children eligible for transport had to travel alone and had to be under the age of 17. Only two children were allowed to be transported per family. “No other country in the world would take in Jewish refugees. There was no place for them to go when the Holocaust started. Many of them could have been saved,” said Furst. “We are supposed to be our brother’s keeper, aren’t we? I hope you all think about this. It is a very big problem, even today.” By Julia Gessner Smith entered the program after Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Becky Barton Sinclair described the program in her ELED 200 class discussion about education issues including what careers or companies, other than traditional classroom teaching jobs, value and hire education majors. The program changed Smith’s life. She gained confidence and became a more driven student when she returned. “The experiences she shared proved she learned more about diverse cultures, communication and public relations than she could have ever learned from a textbook,” said Dr. Sinclair. “She returned home a changed young woman with goals and the drive to achieve them.” Smith will graduate in May and begin a yearlong Disney Program position in August. She hopes to earn a full-time internship position at Disney in the future. Honors college student Grace Campbell will also participate in the program for the fall semester. Other guest speakers included Dr. Charlotte Decoster of the Dallas Holocaust Museum/Center for Education and Tolerance presenting “The Life of Anne Frank,” Roberta Clark presenting “Hate Groups in America” and Fred Strauss, who presented his collection of postcards and spoke about his family’s escape to America from Nazi Germany. A&M-Commerce R anked No. 18 in 50 Best Value Online Business Schools By Taelor Duckworth Texas A&M University-Commerce was named No. 18 in Value Colleges’ recently published 2015 rankings for the Top 50 Best Value Online Business Schools. “I am pleased with this external quality validation for the College of Business at Texas A&M University-Commerce. This recognition demonstrates that A&MCommerce offers affordable, high-quality online programs, including our internationally acclaimed online MBA program and our award-winning online Master of Science Accounting program,” said Dr. Steve Williams, dean of the College of Business at A&M-Commerce. “These programs are taught by our regular faculty with standards and expectations equivalent to our business programs offered on campus. This national ranking demonstrates that business faculty are committed to excellence and student learning.” Value Colleges is an online database that uses research to find practical answers to commonly asked questions about value and affordability when making decisions about higher education. Their articles, rankings and findings are meant to help college-bound readers choose the best collegiate path for them. To determine the ranking order of the Top 50 Best Value Online Business Schools, Value Colleges considered three criteria: complete cost of a degree, average debt for graduates and the average starting salary of graduates. All of the AACSB-accredited business schools in the country were considered and evaluated. A&M-Commerce is one of only five schools that made the cut from Texas.
