Experience Your True Selves More Deeply Here
When over 500 people turned out for the season preview event in July, I was once again
reminded about the tremendous support this community gives to the Flynn. Our ongoing efforts
to foster the enjoyment, understanding, and development of the arts in Vermont through diverse
and engaging artistic experiences cannot exist without your patronage. Thank you.
The Flynn’s evolution from a 1930 Art Deco movie palace into a nationally-recognized
performing arts center was only possible with this community’s unwavering commitment
and perseverance. This support has kept the Flynn vital, accessible, and responsive
throughout every chapter of our growth. For the last 34 years, people like you have made
it possible for the Flynn to help ensure the arts remain alive for future generations.
I can’t guarantee you’ll like everything you see here at the Flynn–there is no aesthetic
hierarchy here other than excellence. Let’s celebrate the familiar and dive into the
unknown together. The arts are a safe place for diverse ideas, expressions, and
experiences to intermingle.
We believe the arts touch people’s lives in profound ways, provide enrichment for
children, stimulate creativity and transformation, and strengthen overall community.
This was reinforced for me a few years ago while watching some of our teen performers
in our FlynnArts summer youth theater production of the musical Shrek. The show has
a wonderful song of affirmation and celebrations of individuality: “Let your freak flag
wave/Let your freak flag fly/Never take it down, never take it down/Raise it way up high!”
The kids had a blast performing it, the audience cheered, and I was so glad I work
here. But I was also a bit wistful, and wished I had a community like the Flynn while
I was growing up. There is a lot of discussion these days about how arts organizations
can become the “third space” in people’s lives. (The first space is the domestic sphere
with family, the second involves civic engagement in school and work, while the third
is where our authentic selves can be nurtured and thrive.) This is our aspiration;
we hope each of you experience your true selves more deeply here. And let your freak
flag fly!
Give me a call (802 652-4504), email (jkillacky@flynncenter.org), or say hello in
the lobby. This is your theater and I am honored to steward it on your behalf.

For Your Comfort & Enjoyment
At Your Service: The house manager is responsible for the overall front-ofhouse operation. A Flynn Spirit (dressed in white and black) can direct patrons
who have questions or concerns to this Flynn representative.
Late Arrivals: Late arrivals will not be seated until a suitable break
in the performance, and at the discretion of the house manager.
Re-entering the Building: Patrons who leave the building during the
performance (including intermission) must show their ticket stubs when re-entering.
Children: Any child one year or older attending a performance must have a
ticket and a separate seat. Infants (children 12 months and under) are
welcome at Flynn family events and performances specifically geared
to children, and will be admitted free of charge. If an infant or young
child is disrupting a performance, the Flynn reserves the right to ask a parent
to sit with the child in the rear of the theater or, if need be, to leave the hall.
Blocking Aisles: Fire safety codes prohibit the blocking of aisles.
Ushers can store your personal belongings safely and securely during performances.
6
Refreshments: No food or beverages are allowed inside the theater
except for bottled water purchased at the Flynn concession stand.
Restrooms: Restrooms are located on the lower level in the rear
of the theater, reached by both the left and right staircases. Three wheelchairaccessible restrooms are available on the main floor off the lobby.
Cameras, Tape Recorders, Pagers, Cell Phones, & Watches:
Cameras and tape recorders may not be used during any performance.
Artist contracts require violators to be removed from the theater and be
liable for damages or injury. All electronics must be turned off during
performances. Please refrain from opening such devices as well, as light can
provide a disturbance to other patrons during a performance.
Fragrances: Please be judicious in your use of perfumes and fragrances when
coming to the theater, as an increasing number of people have allergies to scents.
If the perfume of another patron disturbs you, please notify an usher
or the house manager and we will attempt to relocate you to another seat.
Smoking: The Flynn Center is a smoke-free building.

Beliefs, & Values
Mission
The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts fosters the enjoyment,
understanding, and development of the performing arts in
Vermont through diverse and engaging artistic experiences.
The Flynn is Vermont’s premier home for diverse performing
arts programming and education, collaborating with artists,
organizations, schools and the community to encourage the creation, appreciation, and understanding of the arts.
We seek to nurture a vibrant arts community, foster artistic excellence, and bring people together for powerful shared
experiences that inspire a creative exchange of ideas.
Beliefs/Values
The arts touch people’s lives in profound ways: in their understanding of themselves, their connection to local and world
communities and cultures, and in their understanding of their own creativity. The arts provide these qualities to the greater
public for the social and economic benefits that the shared performance experience provides. The Flynn’s belief in these
sustaining principles manifests in the following forms:
• Responding to demographic shifts in our community.
• Providing quality, diverse opportunities for shared artistic
experiences for all, inspiring participation in the creation,
understanding, and appreciation of the arts.
• Fostering artistic development of established, emerging, and
aspiring regional, national, and international artists.
• Collaborating with artists and arts organizations, community
partners, and businesses in pursuit of mutual goals and richer
cultural experiences.
• Appreciating the value of our audiences, the talent of our
artists, the generosity of our funders, the dedication of our staff,
board, and volunteers, and the integrity of our communities.
• Embracing an internal staff culture that values
innovation and cooperation, utilizes talent and skills,
and provides opportunities for growth and learning.
• Providing excellent customer service with a constant focus
on patron/participant experience at every contact point.
• Staying current with technological advances.
• Preserving our historic facilities within an environmentally
responsible framework whenever possible.
• Maintaining prudent financial planning and management
to secure future viability and sustainability.
• Creating a dynamic learning organization.

Your Beautiful Building
It’s difficult to remember the condition of the theater when it was purchased from Merrill Jarvis in 1981.
The Flynn is a beautifully-restored modern facility that serves as a wonderful example of the bygone splendor
of large, downtown movie houses—but it had a much more humble beginning.
At that time, the Flynn was only the auditorium, what is now the
lobby, and part of the box office. Much of the decorative painting
throughout the lobby and hall were painted over, or faded and
damaged by 50 years of water. Large sections of the auditorium
ceiling were bare plaster, the paint having been destroyed in a
flood caused by a burst sprinkler pipe during the initial renovation.
The roofs were prone to leaking; much of the wiring dated to the
1930s, and the 1950s-era seating was in bad condition.
There were no backstage amenities such as dressing rooms.
There was no way to exit stage left and reenter stage right without
running down to the basement, across it, and up again on the
other side. The theater had been used primarily as a movie house,
so what sound and lighting equipment existed was not useful for
staging live performances. The stage rigging system for flying
sets, lights, and curtains was the original hemp with sand bag
counter weights. The existing curtains were frayed and worn.
The original restoration of the theater was always a two-track
process: dealing with both structural and aesthetic building
concerns, and stage technical issues. In the 1980s the lobby
roof was replaced, new wiring installed, lobby ceilings restored,
seating renovated, and the masonry façade repaired. At that same
time dressing rooms were built, new curtaining installed, new
lighting positions made, a new counterweighted cable rigging
system put in, and a structure built behind the stage to allow
a cross over from stage left to right.
In the ‘90s, the auditorium and stage roofs were replaced, the
marquee rewired, balcony seating redone, air conditioning added
in the hall, and the carpeting replaced with a historic carpet
matching the original pattern and weave. Simultaneously, major
In 2011, the Flynn celebrated its 30th anniversary by undertaking
another major renovation, in three phases. First, the loading dock
was enclosed, providing extra insulation to reduce energy costs
and a wider berth to facilitate large load-ins. In 2012, phase two
was completed thanks to the generosity of the community and an
anonymous million dollar gift. To enhance the patron experience,
the auditorium received brand-new seats with better foam and
seat construction, a quieter and more reliable the seat hinge,
and a more durable and comfortable fabric. The seats are
pitched differently, with more legroom and better sightlines.
The mushroom cap vents in the last few rows of the main floor
were replaced with beautiful flat vents by Conant Custom Brass.
The walls in the main theater were painted, and some acoustical
drapes were installed to replace the old foam panels on the
balcony wall facing the stage.
Accessibility was also enhanced by adding additional wheelchair
locations in the back of the hall and a hearing assist loop
throughout the house, so those with assisted hearing devices
with t-switches can have the sound fed directly to their device.

lighting and sound equipment was purchased, an automated pit
lift was installed that allowed the floor in the orchestra pit to be
located at different levels, and an accessible dressing room built.
The next large capital building project took place in 1999-2000
when the Flynn purchased the building at 145 Main Street, tore
it down, and then rebuilt it. This top-to-bottom renovation and
restoration process took over a year and completely transformed
the Flynn, adding the black box theater FlynnSpace (which was
originally a bowling alley), two dance studios, the Amy E. Tarrant
Gallery, and the Flynn’s administrative offices. The paint had
barely dried when the season opened in September 2000.

Your Beautiful Building
The lobby and foyer also received upgrades in the form of lighting
and wall displays, plus HD LCD screens above the theater wall
that allows for information about the evening’s performance and
upcoming performances, but also a view into what’s happening
in the theater during a performance, should patrons need to
step out for a moment.
The exterior of the building was jazzed up with color-changing
LED down-light spots that graze the carved stone pilasters,
enabling us to illuminate the building in many colors depending
on the season and performance.
Last summer, we finished phase three of the project by
expanding the men’s restroom, adding a shower in FlynnSpace,
and resituating the FlynnTix Box Office to have direct street
presence. This summer, we replaced the theater curtain on
the MainStage.
We hope to continue to maintain and improve this beautiful
historic structure for years to come. The great vaudeville and
film house built by J.J. Flynn and his partners 85 years ago
is recognized nationwide for the beautiful preservation of
that original art deco masterpiece; for world-class artistic
programming in theater, dance, and music; and for educational
programs that reach far into the community to advance teaching
and learning for all ages.

An Overview of the Season
The Flynn’s 2015-16 season starts
with our old friends at Weston Playhouse,
who offer the first installment in their
Great American Plays series, Tennessee
Williams’ The Glass Menagerie
(September 11), the poetic tale of a
dysfunctional family and a gentleman
by STEVE MACQUEEN, caller. The next night, the queen of
Artistic Director
American backup singers, Lisa Fischer
(September 12) takes on the role of headliner. Heavily featured
in the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom,
Fischer has sung with the likes of many, including Sting,
Tina Turner, Chris Botti, and especially the Rolling Stones.
Country superstar Dwight Yoakam (September 17) brings
a blistering live show—along with decades of awards and
accolades—to Burlington for his Flynn debut.
Chicago dance troupe Lucky Plush (October 3) returns with
The Queue, a piece that was co-commissioned by the Flynn and
developed during a two-week production residency here in the
summer of 2014. I’m excited to see the final product. Woody’s
eldest, Arlo Guthrie (October 7), returns for his once-a-decade
full performance of his 18-minute masterwork of philosophical
hilarity, The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree. Someone in Guthrie’s
camp told me he had an encounter with Burlington police years
ago at the Flynn . . . anyone know the story? Woody Allen has
written plays before but Bullets over Broadway is his first
big-time musical, an adaptation of his hit 1991 film involving
prohibition, gangsters, dames, and the theater. New Orleans
pianist Henry Butler (October 23) is one of the giants of
his great American musical tradition—Dr. John calls him
“the pride of new Orleans”—and he’s teamed with New Yorker
Ry Cooder is one of the great American musical adventures, and
the Flynn is ecstatic to present him and his friends Ricky Skaggs
and Sharon White as Cooder-White-Skaggs (November 16),
for an evening of gospel, bluegrass, and pure Americana.
For Anglophilia (by way of Canada), there’s Toronto’s remarkable
Art of Time Ensemble (November 19). Basically a chamber
orchestra with all-star vocalists, the ensemble performs the
Beatles’ beyond-legendary Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club
Band in its entirety.
December brings an annual treat: the musical stage version of
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (December 11), the story
of . . . oh, you know the story!
Not too many works have been great books, movies, and Broadway
shows, but E.L. Doctorow’s Ragtime (January 20) certainly
qualifies. The show, a kaleidoscope of fiction and reality in the
American ‘20s, won Tonys for Best Book and Best Score. Singer/
songwriter Laura Nyro never really got her due (though Eli’s Coming
and And When I Die scored on cover versions by Three Dog Night
and Blood, Sweat & Tears), but jazz pianist/arranger Billy Childs
(January 23) is looking to change that with his towering tribute,
Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. A sextet with
harp and two magical voices (Becca Stevens and Alicia Olatunji),
the band resurrects Nyro’s music in electrifying fashion.

Steven Bernstein & the Hot 9 for a scintillating take on
‘20s hot jazz that looks backward and forward simultaneously.
This one’s fun! Today’s most creative and engaging voice
in tap dance, Michelle Dorrance brings her company Dorrance
Dance (October 29) for ETM: The Initial Approach, a high-tech,
high-energy show that integrates incredible tapping with
futuristic technology.

The modest tale of an Irishman and Czech woman bonding over
music, the Broadway musical Once (February 1 & 2) touched
a chord in viewers and critics, earning eight Tonys including
Best Musical. This is the show’s first season on the road and
it’s here at the Flynn for two shows. Having hosted the first two
installments of The Intergalactic Nemesis, we had to book the
conclusion, right? TWIN INFINITY (February 5) continues this
deeply entertaining retro-futuristic tale, which uses hundreds
of projected animated cells and a
live onstage cast to create a cross
between a ‘30s radio serial and a
graphic novel. The ever-hilarious
Paula Poundstone (February 6)
makes her third appearance at the
Flynn and we’re hoping it’s as popular
as the first two, which sold out.
New York City’s tremendous annual world music event
GlobalFest is hitting the road for the first time as GlobalFest
Live! (February 24) The inaugural tour examines the ritual
of Carnivále in the Americas, featuring joyous music from
Brazil (Casuarina), Haiti (Emeline Michel) and Jamaica (Brushy
One-String). Speaking of global vision, here’s a riddle: what has
Swedish songs, is set on a Greek Island, and took Broadway by
storm? Of course, it’s Mamma Mia! (February 29), the ABBA
brainchild that, despite Pierce Brosnan’s performance in the
film version, continues to fill theaters around the world.
The Cat in the Hat (March 8) continues to beguile those two
kids (and that goldfish) left alone on a rainy day in this musical

adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ famed book, which is an autism and
sensory-friendly family performance. Yamato’s Bakuon:
Legend of the Heartbeat (March 11) is bound to be less sensoryMANAGEMENT
friendly, since those giant taiko drums can get loud. Still the
pageantry, musicality, and pure excitement of this group is
undeniable. Things start getting Gaelic on St. Patrick’s Day,
when County Sligo band Dervish (March 17) brings its deeply
traditional music to life, via top instrumentalists and the
gorgeous vocals of Cathy Jordan. Things stay Irish but get
a bit weird with the Samuel Beckett Trilogy: Not I / Footfalls
/ Rockaby (March 23), three seminal one-act works by the
Nobel Prize-winning genius. The show is performed by Scottish
actress Lisa Dwan, who has received endless raves on both
sides of the pond for her riveting performances of these famously
difficult works. Seriously, don’t miss this one.

Keeping it Scottish, the world’s premier orchestral percussionist
Evelyn Glennie (April 11) performs with the Community
Engagement Lab Orchestra
as the concluding event in a
week-long educational tour of
Vermont. Glennie is dazzling to
watch and even more incredible
to hear, as she makes music
from her vast array of percussion
instruments…or from a tin can and
a stick. Brazil’s astonishing Companhia Urbana de Dança
(April 14) comprises Rio street dancers as choreographed by
founder Sonia Destri. The result is the excitement of hip-hop
and capoeira, pushed to a new level by Destri’s moves.
They’re an electrifying young company you’ll be hearing a lot
more from. A student matinee favorite, the Peking Acrobats
(April 15) bring their centuries-old mix of trick-cycling,
tumbling, balance, and somersaulting for a return engagement.

Quite possibly the greatest living jazz composer (she gets my vote),
Maria Schneider (April 20) and her incomparable orchestra
return to the Flynn for the first time since 2008. She’ll debut a
new work, co-commissioned by the Flynn. Fado, that sad and
sensuous music of Portugal, has received a youth transfusion
over the last decade. The greatest of these new re-interpreters is
Ana Moura (April 29), who immerses herself in tradition while
also updating the genre through collaborations with her admirers,
which include Prince and the Rolling Stones.
When the Alonzo King LINES Ballet (May 4) takes the Flynn stage
for the first time in more than a decade, the company will be dancing
to the sounds of nature, thanks to an intriguing collaboration with
composer/ecologist Bernie Krause. Krause records natural sounds
and turns them into soundscapes, and I’m intrigued to see how
King’s beautifully fluid dancers interpret these sounds.
FlynnSpace most certainly deserves its own long article,
as this year we’ve planned one of our basement space’s most
ambitious seasons ever. But if I can only mention a few, they

include local jazz musician/composer Brian McCarthy’s
ambitious jazz suite of songs built around Civil War themes
(November 6-7); the hilarious and profound dancing of
Monica Bill Barnes & Co. (December 3), last seen to such
great effect on the MainStage with Ira
Glass; the Bang on a Can All-Stars
performing Brian Eno’s magical Music
for Airports (February 19); Soovin Kim
& the Ying Quartet playing Beethoven
(February 27-28); the National Theatre
of Scotland’s fever dream of a musical
comedy, The Strange Undoing of Prudencia The Strange Undoing of
Hart (April 8-10), spoken in verse and set Prudencia Hart, April 8-10
in a bar (in FlynnSpace, the audience doubles as the bar’s
patrons); and, the show I am most looking forward to this whole
season, a performance by Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq
(May 14), who channels punk and avant-garde into a wordless
display that is as much an exorcism as a performance.
Not for everyone, certainly, but if it’s for you, I’ll see you there.

Education at the Flynn
Our education programs strive to engage learners of all ages in the creative process, nurture
artistic skill development, cultivate lifelong appreciation of the performing arts, and make the
performing arts an integral part of school and community life.
To ignite creative sparks and foster the artists of the future,
we expanded summer camps for kids. When the Flynn was
renovated in 2000, two studios were added and we began
year-round performing arts classes for all ages, now known
as FlynnArts. Our student matinees series remains the
cornerstone of what we do, continuing to inspire students
and help them understand other cultures and life experiences
in visceral, meaningful ways. To build
teacher understanding we began offering
teacher workshops in specific art forms
and in arts integration. Interactive
companion workshops in schools have
been drawing connections between
matinees and classwork since 1997.
In 2001, we created our signature
professional development program,

In 1994, schoolchildren attended the very first student matinee
at the Flynn: Stage One Louisville’s production of The Diary of
Anne Frank. After the show, one teacher wrote to say that his
students understood Anne Frank’s experience from seeing this
play so much more deeply than they had upon reading the book
or watching a video. With this comment, the mission of the
education department was born: how to get more teachers to
understand the value of performance in helping kids learn?
How to help audience members carry the excitement of seeing
a live show back into their lives? How to build audiences and
support established, emerging, and young artists?

Education at the Flynn
(continued from page 24)
In 2014-15:
• FlynnArts drew 1,517 students to classes in dance, acting,
comedy, voice, and instrumental music, including three Show
Choirs for grades 4-12, two Summer Youth Theater productions,
and four Jazz Music & Vocal Ensembles for kids and adults alike.
• 35,000 students attended from 172 schools and 196
homeschools. We also continue to oversee the Vermont Young
Playwrights Program, involving 19 middle and high schools from
around the state in collaboration with Vermont Stage Company
and the Young Writers Project.
Here at the Flynn we remain deeply committed to
nurturing the artists and audiences of today and
tomorrow!

We take joy in the regular feedback that as a result of our
programs, children’s self-esteem is blossoming, and adults
are unearthing their creative sides. We hear of schoolchildren
deepening their understanding of scientific, historic, and literary
concepts, and of disengaged or struggling students who become
enthusiastic participants in schoolwork for the first time. We hear
audience members of all ages review performances as “insiders,”
demonstrating that they understand the elements of performing
arts. We see more and more teachers empowered with confidence
and new ideas about how to bring their curriculum alive, and we
celebrate the ongoing evolution of Burlington’s Integrated Arts
Academy, in which we’ve been intimately involved.
Photo: Frédéric Silberman
• We conducted 374 companion workshops for 9,350 students
attending our student matinees. Teaching artists traveled a total
of 8,891 miles outside of Chittenden County and conducted
1,136 hours of arts integrated workshops at over 100 schools
throughout the region.

Seat Campaign
A limited number of seats are still
available. For $1,000, we invite you to
dedicate a new seat to honor a loved one,
your family, a beloved pet, commemorate
a birthday or an anniversary—your choice.
We’ll mark your generosity right on the seat with a personalized plaque.
For more information, contact Development Director Gina Haddock
at rhaddock@flynncenter.org or 802-652-4533.

In Fall 2011, the Flynn undertook a capital campaign to raise funds
for facility enhancements, including replacement of the 60+ year
old theater seats. Although the campaign met its goals, many of our
patrons continue to make special gifts in order to name a seat at the
Flynn. We have had donors come forward to surprise family members
at Christmas, pay tribute to special friends,
and honor birthdays with a surprise gift of
a named seat. Flynn donors are creative!

“The Flynn has been an incredible source
for us for cultural entertainment and education.
Ensuring that The Flynn is around for future
generations is important to maintaining
a rich diversity of opportunities in Burlington.
Committing to being Flynn Legacy members
was a natural choice, enabling us to make
this a part of our personal legacy.
—David Raphael and Nicole Carignan
Leave a Legacy
Many Flynn patrons want to ensure that future generations experience the joy and power of the performing arts. With a gift made
through your estate, you can make that happen. The Flynn Legacy Society honors and recognizes those individuals who have designated
the Flynn Center as a beneficiary of their will, trust, life insurance, or life income. The following donors have made a commitment to
leave a legacy that assures the Flynn continues as a vibrant, cultural force in the region, bringing future generations the enjoyment,
inspiration and learning associated with our premier performing arts center.

Thank You Flynn Spirits
Formed in 1981, the Spirit group
has grown to 385 volunteers who
provide patron safety, comfort,
and enjoyment. The Flynn Spirits
work as ushers, ticket takers,
concessionaires, and support
personnel for all public events
held at the Flynn Center.
Spirits also work on benefit
events, educational programs,
Photo: Frédéric Silberman
office mailings, and other Flynn
projects. Annual registration
is in July and August.
We still have four original Spirits from that first year, plus several others who have
volunteered for over 25 years, some of whom posed for a photo above. Spirits are
a huge gift to the Flynn, and we celebrate them all.
These people have served for 10 or more years as ushers, house captains, house managers, bartenders, callers,
and concessions staff. Look for the different nametags and thank them for their ongoing support of the Flynn Center.
