Book Club at The Whistler is a monthly series curated by head bartender Paul McGee: on the first Wednesday of every month, McGee hosts a cocktail party based
on a different classic cocktail recipe book from his personal library.
On Wednesday, June 1st, Book Club will once again bring Tiki Night
back to The Whistler, this time with the help of Remixed, by modern tiki guru Jeff
“Beachbum” Berry. Pulling recipes from each of the book’s Appendixes, McGee
will curate a menu of twelve cocktails and two punches all conceived of during the
current revival of tropical ‘mixology.’
The first half of the menu will feature new, original drinks by ‘The Bum’ himself. With an emphasis on making tiki drinks available to anyone—that is, providing
exotic recipes for folks without access to exotic ingredients—Beachbum Berry’s
recipes are simple and guaranteed to ‘make you feel sand between your toes.’
The menu’s second half will be comprised of new drinks from what Berry
calls the ‘Tiki Revival,’ courtesy of bartenders the likes of David Wondrich of Esquire, Brian Miller and Joaquin Simo of Death & Company in New York City, Jim
Meehan of PDT in New York City, Martin Cate of Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco, and Sean Muldonn of the Merchant Hotel in Belfast, Ireland. As The Bum
explains, “No matter what category today’s drink-makers fall into—molecular mixologists, farm-to-glass ‘bar chefs,’ or pre-Prohibition classicists—they’re beginning to take an interest in tiki. A rising tide lifts all booze.”
In addition to the twelve-drink menu available at The Whistler’s main bar,
McGee will also be offering shots of rum and a special, yet-to-be-announced tiki
concoction at the Backyard Bar.

S O : Sweater Funk is a weekly party in San Francisco that consists of 13 DJs playing 80’s boogie & funk records every Sunday. It was started
by Jon Blunck of Groove Merchant Records and
he’s a great friend of Dam Funk (Stones Throw),
who started the boogie & funk party Funkmosphere in Los Angeles. Dam has always been
a big influence on our whole crew as he really
brought the sound of 80’s R&B/funk back into the
limelight through Funkmosphere and his releases
on Stones Throw. Jon wanted to bring the flavor
of Funkmosphere to San Francisco, so he got
all of us record nerds together, found a grimey
basement in Chinatown to play and dance in,
and Sweater Funk was born. For me personally,
Sweater Funk has changed my life. Dam Funk,
Jon Blunck, and the rest of the crew have been
my biggest influences as a DJ, as they have really
helped shape my sound, and brought me back to
the joy of digging for records.

It’s been amazing to see so many of the DJs that
I have been inspired by and grew up listening to.
Chicago DJs definitely have a style that is unique
to the city, and I’m constantly being inspired by
the local DJs and record collectors. Also, I’ve
been blessed with being able to find so much of
the music that I love that was so difficult to find in
California. A lot of the 80’s R&B records that I
was seeking in California are very common here
in Chicago. I’m a kid in a candy store!

These locals consider themselves a sonic carnival and they utilize almost every classic instrument, from organs and glockenspiels to trumpets
and trombones, but they keep the rock vibe alive
with fuzzed-out electric guitars. Think a folky
waltz crossed with Modest Mouse. Grape Juice
labelmates Curtis Evans and Our Friends Electric open.

With a new full-length in the works, Brighton has
recently truncated their name — dropping the
MA — to highlight the changes to their lineup.
“We’ve come a long way since our Brighton MA
EP,” says guitarist Jim Tuerk, “so the name change,
while slight, seems an apt way to underscore the
newness we all feel moving forward.” Sleepy Kitty
is the music and art collaboration of Paige Brubeck and Evan Sult (Bound Stems, Harvey Danger). Started in Chicago in 2008, the two moved
to St. Louis where they screenprint rock posters
and make music that Brubeck describes as “choir
nerd discovers Sonic Youth.” Their debut album,
“Infinity City,” is out now on Euclid Records and
they’re celebrating with a return to Chicago.

Lawrence Peters spins from his enormous collection of vintage country vinyl, throwing down a
mix of honky-tonk, bluegrass, outlaw, string band,

Color Radio listening party

Color Radio is throwing a listening party for their
new album, Architects. Kid Color will be joining
the festivities as guest DJ for the night. The band
will be selling vinyl, screen printed posters, and
t-shirts. Come out and wish the guys well as they
embark on another east coast tour.
10. Johnny Carson: During his last week as host
he was performing a fake products bit and decided to hold one back, talking about it but never
showing it. This is how I remember Johnny Carson, as a man who has been keeping me in the
dark about one bad joke for almost twenty years.
9. Jimmy Kimmel: It’s difficult to pigeonhole Kimmel for good reason. His crowd and target audience don’t appreciate his wit and comedy nerds
think he’s too frat-ish.
8. Bonny Hunt: Yes her show was cancelled and
yes it was daytime fodder, but I found Hunt to be
the perfect mix of sweet, self-depricating, quick
and sweet. A host for the whole family.
7. Jon Stewart: The smartest man on late night
because he has the smartest staff on late night.
6. Larry Sanders: This fictional host would have
been the ideal Carson heir. Also, hey-now!
5. Stephen Colbert: Just for being the first and
thus far only host to have the audience applaud
for him when he brings on a guest, Colbert will
forever be in my top 10.
4. David Letterman: Always quick, sometimes
mean and never satisfied, Letterman is the best
interviewer on television. It’s even better when he
obviously loathes his guest.
3. Conan O’Brian: I’m sure it’s a time and a place
thing, but “Late Night” from 1996 to 2003 was,
to me, the golden age of nerd style talk show
comedy.
2. Terri Gross: If you’re not a fan, listen to her interview with Kiss front man Gene Simmons from
February 2002 and you’ll consider donating to

Red Electric Rainbow’s newest album, Dark
Days, was recorded using mostly a Nord Lead 2
synthesizer. Says Altered Zones, “the album bubbles with textures that lend themselves easily to
fans of Oneohtrix Point Never, Mist, Outer Space,
and the current crop of cosmic travelers traversing the analog plain.” Opening is San Francisco’s
Jack Curtis Dubowsky, an active composer, conductor, writer, educator, and filmmaker. He has
composed four chamber operas and scored five
feature films, including Redwoods, Rock Haven,
and That Man Peter Berlin. Dubowsky performs
at The Whistler with his signature Jack Curtis
Dubowsky Ensemble, which combines acoustic
instruments, electronic hardware, audiovisuals,
composed material, and free improvisation.
