and it’s not just for bookworms and
academics.

why
European explorers fell in love with
Albany in the 17th century. Explore
majestic buildings, shipwrecks, convict
relics, ANZAC memorials, museums, forts,
ports and evidence of the city’s whaling
and agricultural industries. Make use of
Albany’s excellent facilities and stunning
new waterfront, marina and Entertainment
Centre while you plan your return trip to
coincide with the centenary of ANZAC,
kicking off in November 2014.
Menang: History at a glance
The Noongar Menang people assert
their identity through a vibrant, strong
culture said to date back 18,000 years.
Indigenous family groups are recognised
as traditional owners of the land through
the City of Albany Aboriginal Accord,
a document signed in 2003 which
promotes reconciliation, negotiation and
cooperation.
The Kinjarling Trail is a cultural heritage
asset drawing together Albany’s stories
of landscape, harbours and ocean from
Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures.
The trail’s narratives link Menang history
with the development of Albany’s
foreshore. Weaving through Albany, it
covers important sites, taking in Indigenous
culture as well as Charles Darwin’s visit,
European settlement and the natural
environment. Book your discovery of the
Kinjarling Trail today.

Albany’s special place in the remembrance
of WWI is recognised the world over. Each
year thousands of people, locals and
visitors, silently and solemnly gather for the
dawn service at the top of Mount Clarence
looking out over King George Sound to
commemorate the diggers who perished
in the Great War. Wreaths are laid upon the
water of the Sound, just as one was laid at a
dawn service held on 25 April 1930.
Albany recently launched the stunning
ANZAC Peace Park on its foreshore in
recognition of the significance of the city’s
role in the ANZAC legend. The park will
play a significant role in the hosting of
commemorative events for the Centenary
of ANZAC in 2014, and is expected to attract
thousands of international visitors.
Anzac Albany Commemorates

1 November 2014 will mark 100 years since

Get Your History Hit
The Albany region features many significant
Indigenous cultural sites that chronicle
the fascinating Menang culture that predated European settlement. To get your
fix, discover the ancient stone fish traps
built 7,500 years ago by Menang people
at Albany’s Oyster Harbour: they used tidal
movements to catch fish. Consisting of
eight weirs along the north end of Oyster
Harbour, the traps are made of thousands
of stones and an outlet gap covered with
branches. They trapped fish as the tide
levels dropped.

Your
Bike!
CYCLING ROUTES proliferate around Albany so
if you haven’t brought your own treadly, hire one
and take off.
Albany’s weather is perfect year round for cycling, so
plan ahead, throw a few things in a bag (sunscreen,
water, mobile phone, snack) and get going. Bikes
can be hired from various outlets in Albany (check
with the Visitor Centre) including spots along the
foreshore and at Middleton Beach in summer.
Grab a Go Cycle amazingalbany map from the
Albany Visitor Centre and remember to take safety
precautions, wear a helmet and look out for vehicle
movements, especially if you have children with
you. Identified cycle routes include: the Wind Trail
(30km); Wales to Whales (60km); Wildflower Trail
(60km) and the Go Taste Trail (75km).
If a leisurely run along a beach trail is more your
thing, then cycle to breakfast at Middleton Beach,
work off those calories with a stroll along the
shoreline and jump in for a quick splash.
Thrill seekers need look no further than
the Mount Clarence Downhill, a 700 metre long
purpose-built downhill track right in the centre of
Albany with breathtaking views over King George
Sound. Starting near the carpark on Apex Drive
on Mount Clarence, the track drops 70 vertical
metres and features trees, rock gardens, boulders
and obstacles including jumps and drops, before
opening out to a fire road near Hare Street. Excellent
mobile reception means you can download the free
track app for more information.

CYCLING
Bike paths take you to some of Albany’s most
breathtaking sites including beaches, harbours,
and into native bush land. Take in the harbour and
wildflower hotspots via winding paths and tracks
and past spectacular coastal scenery. When you’ve
reached the end of your ride, refresh with a swim
and a picnic.
Then plan a lazy afternoon mooching around
on your bike discovering Albany’s quirky cafes,
superlative galleries and avant-garde retail scene.
Unearth bookstores, smart boutiques and dreamy
coffee houses. It’s all do-able from the comfort
of your saddle. Albany is a traffic-light-free zone
(cheer!), but the city’s many roundabouts require
common sense if you’re on two wheels. Give way
to the right, use your signals and be prepared for
heavy vehicles and trucks. Always wear a helmet
and use a bell, and remember lights for night riding.

THE REAL SOUTH
Love at
First
Bite
DISCOVER THE authentic taste of the Real
South and you’ll forget there’s any other culinary
experience worth having. Blog your journey
through fields of gold, vineyards of green and
oceans of blue as you dine and feast your way
around Albany. And discover why you’re only one
degree of separation from your food source.
Acquire
You won’t be able to resist stacking
boxes full to the brim with produce as you trawl
local providores, cellar doors and gourmet outlets
around Albany. Your pantry will groan with
satisfaction when you stock it full of the Real South’s
wine, fruit, vegetables, fresh and cured meats,
fish and seafood sauces, pickles, jams, chutneys,
accompaniments, chocolate, oils, breads and
cheeses, spices and coffee. You’ll find wine that is
unavailable elsewhere. Acquire now and reap the
rewards later.
Marketing 101 Albany puts the real back into
reality, and our markets are no exception. Visit Albany’s
two fresh markets, ranked among Australia’s best,
for garden-fresh vegetables, just-caught fish, creamy
goats’ cheese, crusty piping-hot pastries and great
entertainment. Both markets provide locals and visitors
with an incredible array of mouthwateringly sensational
local gourmet produce, year-round. The Albany Farmer’s
Market runs every Saturday from 8am – noon, while the
Albany Boatshed Markets run every Sunday from 10am –
1pm. They are the start of your epicurean and viticultural
journey around Albany. Source your produce. Cook,
devour and enjoy it.
One Degree of Separation
Kick back over world-class local produce at
restaurants celebrating the provenance of sourced
ingredients. Chances are you’ll meet the chef who
also might just happen to be the owner of the
establishment you are dining at. Produce will have
been delivered that day (while you’re there if you’re
lucky) and you’ll probably be eating it within hours
of its harvest.
Dine at a cellar door and you’re just as likely to meet
the very person who tends the vegetable garden
supplying the superbly fresh delights on your plate.
Or hire a private chef to do your work for you. Don’t
be surprised to find they hail from a fishing family
who hauled in your dinner in the wee hours of the
morning.
You get more than you bargain for in Albany. Local
foodies are renowned for sharing their knowledge,
so when you happen upon one, mine them for
information. Get talking and you’ll soon be in on the
local lore about what grew where, the ingredient
provenance and the growing season of the fruit
used to produce your chosen wine.

Stellar Cellars
Producing internationally
recognised wine of excellence comes naturally in the Great
Southern wine region, of which Albany is a sub-region. So
identify your skipper and plan your foray around Albany’s
celebrated cellar doors. Taste outstanding varietal styles
including: shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir,
riesling, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Producing 37%
of wine grapes in Western Australia, the region boasts
cellar doors galore, but plan ahead as seasonal opening
times can vary. And don’t forget your spirit – or should
we say spirits. A visit to Albany’s internationally acclaimed
artisanal spirits distillery - for a quaff of single malt is one
for the bucket list.
Forget the packed lunch. Albany’s incredible
food scene will see you wave goodbye to DIY
meals as you re-past and re-create your way
around the region following the Go Taste

THERE’S A REASON Albany’s gourmet providores,
organic food producers, farmers’ markets and dining
outlets are stacking up all the food awards’silverware
– and it’s got nothing to do with MasterChef. What
reason, you ask? Well, there are many, and they go
like this. Sharp, clean air blasting straight from the
Southern Ocean. Produce so fresh you can count
the minutes since it was harvested. Devotion to
sustainable agricultural methods. Commitment to
time-honoured cooking techniques passed down
through generations. A strictly seasonal approach
to dining room menus. The list goes on and so does
Albany’s food scene, brimming with product so
fresh it begs to be devoured, now.
