A 6-credit course of your BEng degree
programme (elective, highly recommended)

• Also known as “Summer Internship” and
“Industrial Placement”
• On-the-job training, real-life working experiences
• Normally conducted during summer months of
June, July and August
• At least 6 weeks, normally not more than 8 weeks.
• Usually in companies/organizations in Hong Kong,
mainland China and overseas

Course Objective:
1. Integrate theory learning with practical applications;
2. Understand real-life organizational structure and
business operation;
3. Learn how to build human relations with seniors and
co-workers; and
4. Enrich personal resume for becoming engineering
professional.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Appreciate the application of academic knowledge
to hands-on situations;
2. Learn more about real-life business, company
structure and operations; and
3. Improve team-working and communication skills.
Relevant Programme Outcomes (Equivalent to the HKIE Abilities for Engineering Graduates)
PO(1) - an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering appropriate to the BSE and ME disciplines..

• Summer industrial training undertaken in
companies/organizations
– 1. Students obtain training places by themselves
– 2. Department assists students to apply and
obtain training places via:
• Open recruitments, e.g. CLP, Cathy Pacific,
Gammon, MTRC, Swire
• Bodies contacted by ME Dept. e.g.
– Government departments
– Private sector (consultants, contractors)

• Complete your application form by typing or printing
• Check your spelling and written English carefully
• Please also provide your full resume/CV and a cover letter
(they often affect your chance of getting summer training
posts!)

• Submit in PDF format

– Dept. will inform students by email when
vacancies are available
• For open recruitments, students may express interest
in applying by responding to the notice
• For companies contacted by Dept., we will
arrange/match suitable candidate(s) to the jobs
– Dept. nominate suitable students to companies
for their consideration
– Interviews might be conducted

• How to increase your chance of success?
– Have clear and well-organised documents
• Your application form, CV, cover letter, other
supporting documents
– Prepare well for job application and interview
• Know/study about the company; must be polite,
humble, positive and enthusiastic, not bargain for
training allowance
– Avoid being too “picky” and “money-minded”
• Better to accept a “suitable” job offer, rather than
select (and wait for) the “best” job

• Advice to non-local students
– Some companies prefer local HK students
• Can speak Cantonese; familiar with HK
– But there are companies that can accept nonlocal students (try to promote your strengths)
• e.g. speak good English or Putonghua; familiar with
mainland China or other countries/culture
– May look for internship opportunities in HK,
your home town/country or other places

– It should be neat and tidy, organized, easy
to read, with clear headings and indentations

– Job market is very competitive
• Economy, competitors (from other universities)
• Expectations of employers
– Do not expect high pay and comfortable job
– Organizations look for keen helpers but not
leisure players
– We must thank the company/employer for
providing training places

– Remember that you are a representative of the
University
• Behave like a delegate of HKU, MECH
• Stick to the agreed terms
• No early departure
– Do your best to maintain a good relationship
between HKU and external bodies

• You should not reject or resign from the assigned
training place for unreasonable excuses such as:
 To engage with another company for reasons, such as
higher pay and convenient location;
 To prepare for viva/supplementary examination;
 To settle family/private affairs;
 To start doing Final Year Project earlier;
• If you do such, you will damage the reputation of
yourself and HKU

• During Training
– Report for duty punctually, work with
commitment, and stay until the last day of the
agreed training period
– SAFETY FIRST! Avoid doing harm to yourself
and others
– Obey the company regulations. Respect your
seniors and fellow workers
– If in doubt, discuss with your job supervisor or
colleagues, or contact the ME Dept.

Course Assessment
• You have to write weekly log records and a
training report
• You shall submit the training report to ME Dept.
by 13 August
– Your submission date of the training documents will be
recorded in the training report
– No report will be accepted by the Dept. after the
deadline, and the industrial training of the late
submission students will be marked as “failed”
• You may continue the training after 13 August

• Company feedback
– The company (your supervisor or boss) will be invited
to evaluate your performance
• Training report
– It will be duly marked by your Non-Academic Tutor
– A student may fail the training course if his/her training
performance is unsatisfactory
• A training certificate will be issued to indicate the
quality of training results: Passed with distinction;
Passed; and Failed

• A brief record that summarizes your training
activities on a weekly basis
• Training supervisors may refer to it from time to
time for monitoring your training progress
• A useful reference for preparing the training report
• A weekly log record template together with a

industrial training course

• Typed on A4 paper, one-sided and with proper
margins. It should be bound with reasonable
quality
• The nominal length is not less than 2500 words
• Focus on reporting what you have done and learnt.
Avoid unnecessary details.
