This year’s topic was “Back to Basics”. The symposium is a great opportunity for our members and supporters from all over the region to meet once a year and discuss day to day activities, operating strategies, maintenance programs and other topics associated with our membranes plants. As you all know, NWMOA also organizes daily workshops around the region focusing on hands on sessions and specific topics of interest in the region. Please visit our website (www.nwmoa.com) for updates on upcoming workshops in your area. This year’s symposium included a number of speakers and panelists from a variety of fields including regulators, consultants, operators, and manufacturers. The program “Back to Basics” kicked off on Monday with an overview of the membrane industry, basics on MF/UF, a review on math applicable to membrane operations and a presentation on how temperature can impact membrane plants. In the evening a network reception was held in the exhibit hall that gave the attendees the opportunity to meet other professionals in the field and discuss topics of interest, while enjoying an amazing food and drink spread. Tuesday morning sessions were broken into two tracks: Drinking Water Track: MF/UF Applications Wastewater Track: MBR Applications There was an even split of attendees between sessions. The drinking water track included presentations on analytical techniques used to optimize membrane cleaning, membrane performance analysis & monitoring, reduction of turbidity and TOC through coagulation and multi-media filtration, as well as a regulatory update. Wastewater track participants were able to benefit from presentations on residual management, a regulatory update, advances in process air technologies and an overview on chemicals used in MBR applications. Tuesday morning sessions were followed by an afternoon interactive session that included three small hands on groups. Attendees were divided into small groups that rotated around the different stations to take a close look at membrane autopsy, electronic O&M manuals and a plant troubleshooting roundtable. Tuesday also included our lunch awards banquette, an evening networking reception with exhibitors and sponsors and an excellent food and drink feast! Wednesday was the final day and started with an excellent panel discussion that included several experts from the membrane industry discussing universal skids for MF/UF. The symposium was concluded with a tour of City of La Center MBR plant. We wish to thank again our Platinum Sponsors, Carollo Engineers and Ovivo USA, Inc. as well as our gold sponsors, Avista Technologies Inc., H2O Innovation and Victaulic, exhibitors and speakers for helping us put this symposium together. We look forward to our next workshop. NWMOA News Page 3 Volume 3, Issue 1 NWMOA News Volume 3, Issue 1 Page 4 American Water Chemicals, Inc. Sixty one attendees were present, including a strong contingency from the State of Utah’s Department of Environmental Quality. Membrane users from all over the Salt Lake Valley attended including users of low pressure membranes (MF/ UF), reverse osmosis (RO) and membrane bioreactors (MBRs). Once workshop attendees were provided some membrane basics and some facility tours to help “make it real” – day 2 of the workshop started with lesson’s learned from a variety of case studies, which included MF/ UF membrane replacement, MF/UF residuals disposal and RO/NF residual disposal (with emphasis on disposal of RO concentrate in the Salt Lake Valley). Plant case studies included Park City and the Jordan Basin MBR plant. Like many of AMTA’s workshops, the program started with a review of the basics for both low pressure membranes and reverse osmosis. This was followed by tours of the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District’s Southwest Groundwater Treatment Plant (5.8-mgd RO plant) and the Holliday Water Company’s 2.5 MGD Microfiltration plant. Both tours demonstrated the value of water resources to the Salt Lake Valley, the pride that the operations staff takes in their plant’s facilities and the role they play in providing water to their many customers. Thank you Jordan Valley and Holliday Water for providing us the opportunity to see your membranes in action! After more networking with Exhibitors (Avista Technologies, Inc., Harn R/O Systems, Koch Membrane Systems, Pall Corporation and Westech) over lunch, the workshop ended with troubleshooting tips which helped round off a great program. Tips included data collection and analysis for both MF/UF and RO/NF applications as well as the fundamentals and value that membrane autopsies can provide. Overall AMTA and NWMOA put on a great workshop. A special thanks to TEAM for again providing great food and support for the event. And also many thanks to our workshop’s major sponsors – American Water Chemicals, Inc., Carollo Engineers and Pall Water Processing.
