Rady Children’s Hospital
Auxiliary President
here were no lazy days of summer for your
Auxiliary Board of Directors; they have been
hard at work. Board members participated in
working retreats, established goals, and prepared
for meetings to kick off upcoming Auxiliary-wide
events and committee retreats. Their efforts will
cement the ideas, plans and goals to ensure that
we continue “Building on Our Rich Traditions to
Create a Vibrant Future.”
Deeply rooted in our traditions is the idea of
advocacy and building awareness for the hospital
by supporting Kids’ NewsDay. On Tuesday,
October 20, we excitedly celebrate the 20th
anniversary of this amazing county-wide event. I
encourage you to celebrate this milestone year by
participating in Kids’ NewsDay.
The 3rd Annual Shamu & You Family Walk will be
held on Saturday, October 3. The
Auxiliary is hosting a booth at the event to give
our members and their friends and family a
chance to have fun together after the walk. Our
booth will feature refreshments, games, child ID
kits and opportunity drawings. I invite you and
your family and friends to join the Auxiliary
Team. Simply go to:

Fantasy on Ice begins in mid-November. Slip on
your mittens, lace up your ice skates, and head
out to the Ice Rink at Horton Square; it’s the
coolest way to benefit the Peckham Center for
Cancer and Blood Disorders.
I look forward to the many events and
opportunities to help Rady Children’s Hospital.

O
n Tuesday, October 20, we will
embark on our 20th year of Kids’
NewsDay. Once again, we are so excited to be
in partnership with The San Diego UnionTribune and NBC 7/39.
Summer is an extremely busy time for all of
us; however, we are continuing to make
progress toward reaching our goals. Ralphs
supermarkets joined our list of sponsors and
half of our wonderful firefighters already
confirmed their participation in this year’s
event. Corporate sponsorship packets were recently mailed and school packets are ready for delivery.
How can your Unit contribute?
n Select a person in your Unit to coordinate a grassroots effort.
n Create a list of possible sponsors from the retailers in your local community.
n Ask each Unit member to visit 10 businesses from your sponsor list.
The goal is to contact as many local businesses as possible. We need everyone’s participation to make our 20th
anniversary a successful event. Remember, your participation helps children in San Diego in a very special way.
Be sure to visit our website to volunteer today!

The Honoring Fund is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate
friendship or to say thank you to people who have helped in some way.
It also provides a unique way to mark a special occasion such as a
birthday, anniversary, wedding or birth of a child.
Each tribute name will be handwritten in the “Book of Honoring” displayed in the Rose Pavilion at Rady
Children’s. A personalized notification will be sent to the person honored.
For more information, visit www.rchsd.org. Click on the Ways to Help tab and select the Honoring and
Remembrance button. You can also call the Auxiliary Office at 858-966-5887.
100% of every donation supports Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

Advocacy
Auxiliary Units traditionally start the volunteer
year during September and close during June;
however, the Auxiliary has identified needs
requiring year-round attention. Kudos to Del
Cerro, Del Mar, Eastlake, Mountain View, Presidio,
Rancho Santa Fe and Tierrasanta Units, who
signed up to do various jobs in July, August and
September. For your reference, the following three
requests are needed year-round:
•Host a birthday party for patients at the
Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile
Children. The party is held once a month and
celebrates the birthdays of everyone born in
that month.
•Provide Brown Bags. These are available
when accessible eating facilities are closed
and when parents are unable to leave a
child’s side.
•Restock the Clothes Closet. New unisex
clothing – in sizes newborn to adult extra
large – is provided for patients and family
members because clothing is often cut off in
the Emergency Care Center, adults
accompanying a sick or injured child may need
a change of clothes and clothing may be also
be needed for unexpected stays in the Hospital.
Education
All Auxiliary members are invited to the Education
Seminars held the first Thursday of the month.
This is your opportunity to learn more about Rady
Children’s Hospital-San Diego and the many
services and programs offered to the community.
Whether you get your information from the
seminar or from your Unit’s Education Rep, take
the next step and share that information with
friends, family and acquaintances. You are a
communication bridge to the community.
My experience as the Auxiliary Hospital Liaison
last year made it clear that the patients, families
and staff at Rady Children’s absolutely appreciate
every bit of support they receive from the
Auxiliary.

Mabel Jessop Spirit Award
Southeast Cluster
Please renew your
membership for the
2009-2010 year.
To manage our member information in a
timely and efficient manner, all renewals
were requested to be submitted to your
membership reps by June 1. There's still a
bit of time for those outstanding. Members
not renewed by October 1 will be dropped
from the membership, and no longer able to
renew at that point. After October 1, they
will be able to rejoin; however, please be
aware this will affect the date joined the
Auxiliary has on its records. You will be
added as a "new" member with a new start
date. We know you all value the time and
energy invested in helping the kids of our
community, and want your Years of Service
pins to reflect the correct number of years of
your contribution, so PLEASE renew with
your membership rep right away, if you
haven't already.
Unit Membership Representatives only need
to attend one of the meetings; 9:30am on
September 24 or 6:30pm on September 29.
The meetings will be held in the West
Conference Room on the fifth floor at Rady
Children’s Plaza, 3665 Kearny Villa Road,
San Diego .
T
he Mabel Jessop Spirit Award was established to acknowledge groups of Auxiliary members who encourage
team spirit within the Auxiliary. This award represents going above and beyond the Unit level by affecting
our community while promoting the mission and good will of Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.
The La Playa Unit of Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary nominated the founders of the Southeast Cluster Youth
Advisory Corps for the 2009 Mabel Jessop Spirit Award. This is the first Youth Advisory Corps that has been
formed within the Rady Children’s organization. It has had a tremendous educational effect not only on the youth
who participate, but also on their community and the RCHA SECU members who mentor the group. The Youth
Advisory Corps has invigorated the SECU with energy and creative new ideas.
The Mabel Jessop Spirit Award recipients are Loretta Allen, Vellet Wyatt Finley and Jacqueline Jackson, who are all
SECU Unit members.

Miracle
Makers
Happy Fall!
I hope each and every one of you had a delightful
and refreshing summer and is ready to turn your
thoughts back toward Making Miracles for Rady
Children’s Hospital!
It’s so exciting to report
that we’ve already
started receiving
Miracle Maker
donations for the
2009-2010 year.
We have so many
opportunities for you, your friends and your other
organizations and groups to get involved in. For
example, on October 3 we’ll all be at SeaWorld for
the 3rd Annual Shamu & You Family Walk. You
can suggest to your bridge group, PTA or even
your husband’s golf group to form a team and
participate. If they raise $500 or more, they
become Miracle Makers. Groups can even become
virtual walkers and sleep in on Walk day. Also,
Kids’ NewsDay is October 20, and we have plenty
of other ways people can participate and help us
celebrate our 20th year! For a complete list of
Miracle Maker opportunities, visit www.rchsd.org.
Click on the Ways to Help tab and then click on
the Events Calendar image.
Thank you for supporting the Miracle Maker
efforts last year. We only want to see this
category of giving grow! Please forward any
questions or suggestions about Miracle Makers to
Miracle Makers Vice President Amanda Ecoff at
Ecoffco1@aol.com. And last and absolutely
not least, please submit every one of
your Miracle Makers each month to me,
as we publish the list of Miracle Makers
in each Chaux Talk, and want to make
sure we include everyone!
Happy Giving! All the Best, Amanda Ecoff

music, exciting dramas, creative crafts, thrilling
games and many special guests. Summer Blast is
free of charge to all children in the San Diego
community. A highlight of the week is the mission
emphasis, which encourages the children who
attend to not only participate in meaningful
service projects, but it also encourages them to
support a specific mission project through a
monetary offering. The children are challenged to
bring in their spare change each day: Pennies on
Monday, Nickels on Tuesday, Dimes on Wednesday,
Quarters on Thursday and Dollars on Friday. To
make this offering even more challenging, the
boys and girls compete to see which gender brings
in the largest offering each day. Mountain High
Kids Ministry of Shadow Mountain chose Rady
Children's Hospital as its special focus for this
year. The elementary school children who attended
Summer Blast participated in making 350 fleece
blankets that will be offered to children treated at
Rady Children’s Hospital. The preschool-age
children decorated and stuffed 300 goodie bags
that will be given to parents caring for children at
the Hospital. After covering the cost of these
meaningful service projects, the Mountain High
Kids ministry was able to offer a donation of more
than $5,000 to the entertainment fund at Rady
Children's.
rab your parkas, slip on your mittens, lace up your ice
skates, and head out to… downtown San Diego?
That’s right, you can once again skate under the stars at our 13th
Annual Fantasy on Ice, the coolest way ever to help the Peckham
Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s
Hospital.
Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary, The Irvine Company, SENTRE
Partners, and NBC 7/39 are again teaming up to present this
wonderful way to enjoy the holiday season. The rink will be open daily from
November 18 to January 3 from 10am–10pm and closed on Thanksgiving and
Christmas.
Special dates to remember are November 18 for Opening Night and
December 2 for our official tree-lighting, which runs simultaneously
with Rockefeller Center’s in New York. Both events will include
professional skaters and live entertainment.
Of course, the real wonder is in helping the patients at the
Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Whether you come
to relive childhood memories, enjoy a romantic evening gliding hand in hand or treating your kids to some real family fun,
you’ll be helping children who really need our support.
Please visit www.fantasyonice.kintera.org to find out more. Tickets at the rink will be $10 per child and $12 per
adult per two-hour session including skates, so pre-ordering or gift purchasing is a GREAT deal!
NEW THIS YEAR! Looking for alternative gift-giving this year? Fantasy on Ice will offer a way to honor and remember your
loved ones this holiday season. By making a gift to the Fantasy on Ice Honoring and Remembrance Program, you can help
save lives at Rady Children’s. All it takes is a minimum gift of $10 to receive a lovely gift bag with a card to give as the gift
and the opportunity to display their name(s) on our digital signage at the ice rink at Horton Square. Gifts of $50 or more
will also receive tickets good for one free session of skating.
For more information about Fantasy on Ice, including rink schedules and prices, call Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary at

Bonita
Bonita Unit's
We finished the year with a wonderful dinner at Via Capri,
organized by Carol Adair and Rosa Debost. Carol
recounted what brings and keeps us together and also
wrote a poem for us – it was very touching!
Theresa Capanis and Jackie Guerra gave us the wrap-up
on the successful Resa’s Marketplace event, which raised
quite a bit of money. Lots of buying was done from the
ladies and a lot of fun was had, too.
Outgoing Chair Bobbie Minton shared kind words and installed
the new Bonita board. New Chair Jo Evans is ready for the year.
Now, Bonita Unit is getting down to business!
Our new year will start September 22 with a meeting at
Theresa Capanis’ home. We’re looking forward to a great
turn-out. Our Holiday Luncheon by the Bay Committee is
putting the pedal down on preparations for the event
December 5. Please be sure to mark your calendar! If you’d like more information, please contact Chair Lori
Moore at 619-591-9318. We’ll have great items for the live auction, silent auction and raffle. And the
ultimate winner…Rady Children’s!

Dana
The Dana Unit met in May at the home of Helen and Buzz Kinnaird to honor our most successful Garden Walk
ever. Those in attendance included the owners of the 15 homes in Sunset Cliffs who graciously allowed us to show
off their amazing gardens to our sponsors, docents and Unit members. We toasted the Dana Unit’s successful
event and gave our biggest ever check to Dr. Marilyn Jones and her team to assist in the very important work of
the Craniofacial Unit. Proceeds from the Garden Walk assist in the medical management of craniofacial patients
who often require multiple interventions and team visits. The walks have also funded specialized plastic surgery
and microsurgical instruments.
In June, we gathered at the magnificent home of Jerilyn Jones to enjoy the year’s accomplishments and meet
prospective members. This summer, several members demonstrated they know how to enjoy themselves too! Ron
and Ann Brooks spent a month in Italy, Nancy Caine traveled to New Zealand, and Helen and Buzz Kinnaird
visited Japan. In addition, Chuck Shedd, Pat Wise and Pete and Karen Novak enjoyed separate trips to Provence
to stay with sustaining member Kathy and Ron Lauderbach at their charming farmhouse.
Fall is here and we are already making plans for our next Garden Walk on April 24, 2010 and other fun events.
