C.A.R.E. / The John 3:16 Center SUMMER 2013 VOLUME 9 ISSUE 3 A Note From the Director Greetings! Board of Directors Dr. Doug Kolb, Chairman Ken Hinrichs, Vice Chairman Linda Calisto, Secretary Jacquelyn Copeland , Treasurer Alfred Riddick This has been an amazing year of growth for CARE and The John 3:16 Center. God has provided some amazing opportunities for our organization, increasing our capacity to serve children and families in our community. It is wonderful to see Him at work and to have the support of His people as we move to follow His will! Please keep our organization, its staff, board, and volunteers in prayer as we research and prepare for future development. We desire wisdom, discernment, attentiveness to the direction of our Lord as we investigate opportunities and make decisions. Summer has been busy at The John 3:16 Center. Five weeks of summer camp have passed, with many children coming to our facility and learning about our world and the God who made it. We have also held cooking classes, begun work on a new volunteer program, and had Design Day for our new playground! Barbara Eddy Algemon Alston Annette Lambert Bob Roegner In this newsletter, you’ll “meet” this year’s camp counselors and see what some of the children had to say about Camp J316. We truly appreciate the support of our many sponsors that make this program possible. You will also see information about our upcoming playground build. This opportunity to have a safety-certified playground in Littleton that “our” children helped to design is exciting and inspiring. Rev. Joe Sandoval Robert Hayes Rev. Stan Lewis We hope to have many of you come out to volunteer for Prep Day and/or Build Day; it will be exciting to see the new playground go up in one day (with 300 volunteers!), with a single day of prep work (done by 30 volunteers!) prior to the build. If you’re interested in seeing the playground design, stop by the Center and we’d be happy to show you the one the children chose! Of course, there is a lot of work going on in the background to make this possible, so be on the lookout for our fundraisers and volunteer drives! Non-Profit 501C-3 Organization 2nd Quarter Impacts We are preparing for our fall and winter activities as we work toward closing out the summer. School supplies and uniforms will be accepted beginning July 29th; this school supply drive will help prepare approximately 200 children for a successful school year. Our annual Labor Day weekend yard sale will be held at Littleton Baptist on August 31st. Donations of saleable items are being accepted; see page 4 for further details and consider volunteering to help set up on the 30th or operate the sale on the 31st! 345 People served through our Food Pantry Over 2000 hours served by volunteers Over 1000 meals served Over 90 Children registered for Camp J316 Homework Club will begin again on September 9th; consider volunteering for this program. It is an excellent opportunity to mentor and assist children! Our volunteers are greatly appreciated. Without them, we would not be able to maintain our facility, grounds, or accomplish half as much through our programs on our budget. There are many different ways in which to volunteer; please contact us if you are interested in supporting our programs in this way. Inside this issue: Camp J316 2 As you keep us in prayer, please join us in praising God that He has enabled us to serve Him and meet the needs of many throughout the first half of this year. Pray also for His guidance as we begin planning and budgeting for 2014 in the coming months, as well as continuing our program evaluations for strategic planning. Hi, my name is Natarshia Corley and I'm currently a psychology major at Winston-Salem State University. As a child, I attended both the after school program and summer camp at The John 3:16 Center. When presented with the opportunity to become a counselor, I thought it would be a great opportunity and a fun experience. As I continue my journey, I know God is sticking close by me and all the things I learned as a child at the John 3:16 Center has helped me to remember God and always keep my faith. Hey, y’all!
