Here Mr. Clark, in 1855, set the pin stakes for a town called Forest City, which was to be literally carved out of the native forest. Much can be written about the following 160 years. Although the Civil War interrupted the growth of Forest City, the benefits of the new community were attractive to immigrant settlers. In 1879, a new rail line running between Minneapolis and St. Louis brought new faces and new languages from Sweden, Norway, Germany and Denmark to Forest City. In the 1900s, Forest City’s history showed the progressiveness that continues today in the community. New schools, banks, churches, the formation of Waldorf College and the introduction of electricity and telephone turned Forest City into a county seat town ideal for raising families and growing industry. Entrepreneurship has never been a mute point. A new county courthouse was built in 1896, which still stands majestic today in the center of town. Two large, first-class hotels were built in town, one of which became, in 1903, what we know today as Waldorf College. The formation of the Farmers Co-op in 1916 helped develop the rich area land base which, in 2007, grew the largest average county corn yield per acre of any county in Iowa. In 1924, citizens stepped forward to preserve forever the remnants and beauty of the Wisconsin Glacial Drift, which is enjoyed by thousands today as Pilot Knob State Park. Great strides continued in 1960 when local investors, headed by John K. Hanson and Elliot Cooper, took over a failing outof-town travel trailer factory and made it into Winnebago Industries — today’s leader in worldwide RV motor home manufacturing. And last but not least, Forest City Community Schools are now in the process of adding a second wind turbine to complement the one they erected more than 10 years ago, cranking green power to the classroom and community. If there were a book title for this Winnebago County town it would be, “Forest City — A Place to Grow... families, education, government, industry and productive farm fields.” Welcome to our community, where roots run deep to grow the future! Riley Lewis, Historian For more information go to www.forestcityia.com From the first modest RVs that rolled off the line to the innovative coaches we produce today, Winnebago has defined the motorhome industry for decades. Hidden within the 700-acre park and enclosed by abrupt banks is Dead Man’s Lake, a four-acre floating sphagnum bog, the only one of its kind in Iowa. This is a botanist’s delight, bordered by native trees, shrubs and flowering plants. Waterfowl feed and breed in the tall grasses. Three species of pond lilies grow here, one found nowhere else in Iowa. Trees native to the Pilot Knob area include walnut, ash, basswood, wild cherry, burr oak, aspen, white oak and red oak. Pilot Knob’s natural features are so significant, the majority of the park has been dedicated as a state preserve.
