Spotlight Winter 2012 - The Arc of San Diego
A Quarterly Publication of The Arc of San Diego Winter 2012 You are cordially invited… to join the Legacy Society at The Arc of San Diego. A Celebration of Giving The Arc of San Diego held its annual Legacy Society Appreciation Luncheon November 9, 2012 at Bertrand at Mr. A's in Banker’s Hill. This event recognizes and honors individuals who have left a legacy gift to The Arc by establishing a charitable gift annuity, creating a charitable remainder trust, setting up a pooled income fund, or including the organization in their will. President & CEO David Schneider welcomed guests and introduced Keynote Speaker, Julie Murch. Julie, who works in Arc Community Employment Services as a member of the janitorial crew at the Sulpizio Family Center, spoke of her long-standing relationship with The Arc and how meaningful services have given her the support to fully live her life the way she desires. David thanked guests for their commitment to The Arc’s future. Over the years, their generosity has made it possible for The Arc to provide important programs and services to more than 2,500 children and adults with disabilities. Amongst this year’s successes, we include: n n The introduction of Therap, a new electronic case management software system which permits secure effective and efficient documentation, reporting, and communication with immediate access to important information for staff involved in consumers’ health plans. The new Therapeutic Art Program, using art and imagery, to help more than 100 infants and toddlers in the Parent/Infant program communicate and explore the world around them. In acknowledging the importance of our Legacy Donors, David reiterated, “The financial support from your planned gift not only gives us strength in advocating for people with disabilities, but also ensures that we have a strong foundation for future success. Thank you again, from everyone at The Arc, for your generous support of our mission to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve their life goals.” Legacy Society membership is bestowed upon friends who have designated The Arc of San Diego as a recipient of their estate or other planned gifts. In addition to bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts, insurance policies, retirement plans, stocks and other appreciated assets may be used for membership. To become eligible for Legacy Society membership, an individual simply informs The Arc of San Diego, in writing, that The Arc has been included in estate plans. If you have already made a legacy gift, please inform us so we may properly acknowledge your gift, include you in the Legacy Society, and invite you to our annual Legacy Society Luncheon. If you are contemplating a gift, please let us know so we can help you craft a meaningful legacy as you explore all options and evaluate what is important to you. Your communication with us is strictly confidential. We look forward to hearing from you. President’s Message The holidays are here and the year is drawing to a close. As we look back on 2012, we find many reasons to be grateful and proud of the accomplishments of our consumers and staff. Two outstanding achievements that reflect the strong commitment of our dedicated staff and make us immensely proud… 98 percent of consumers report an improvement in the quality of their lives because of Arc programs and services while 96 percent of families express satisfaction with our services. In addition, we were awarded a three year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) with exemplary recognition for Arc Community Employment Services Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Food Services & Landscaping Programs. Before we get caught up in the hustle and bustle that comes with the holiday season, I want to express our gratitude and appreciation to all our donors, staff, consumers, families/caregivers and, in particular, our 220 volunteers who gave 11,091 hours of loyal service to The Arc. Your belief and confidence in our work helps us fulfill our mission. May you and your family have a happy holiday season. We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful 2013! Every year, through its Agent Giving Program, the Safeco Insurance Community Hero Award recognizes individuals who make a positive difference in their community and honors their work with a donation to the nonprofits they support. Safeco agents nominate community heroes who support organizations that focus on education, health & safety, and civic management. Ginger Hodges-Rodrigo, Customer Service Representative with The Michael Ehrenfeld Company (The Arc’s insurance broker) nominated Dave. One of 15 nationwide nominations, Dave received recognition for his work at The Arc over the past 10 years. Congratulations, Dave! South Bay Chapter Advisory Board Board of Directors The Arc of San Diego Officers Dwight Stratton, Board Chair Jerry Wechsler, 1st Vice Chair Maria Riveroll, 2nd Vice Chair Gerald Hansen, Secretary/Treasurer Doug Hoehn, Past Board Chair Members-At-Large Nancy Eakin Robert “Bob” Guthrie Tom Harmon Gregg Shallan, MBA, ChFC Chapter Representatives Jewell Hooper, City Chapter John Vaughn, East County Chapter Vicki Smith, North County Chapter Diane Hanson, North Shores Chapter Yrma Nixon, South Bay Chapter Arc San Diego Foundation Officers Yrma Nixon, Board Chair, Martha Brault, Secretary, Sue Fuller, Treasurer, Charles M. Gilbert and Tom Harmon, Members-at-Large. The Arc of San Diego has five chapter advisory boards who are responsible for addressing the local programming needs of people with disabilities and promoting their general welfare. Founded in September 1959, the South Bay Chapter Advisory Board celebrates a rich history with Starlight Center in Chula Vista. From a small teenage recreation program to programs in the carport of a teacher’s home, to a WWII federal housing project building donated by the Mary Birch Foundation, the Chapter Advisory Board has been at the helm, always guiding Starlight Center. Composed of people from the local community, the South Bay Chapter Advisory Board brings experience, expertise, and a strong desire to help Starlight succeed. Chaired by Yrma Nixon, the Chapter Advisory Board provides leadership and raises essential funds for programs and services. They have been involved in several capital campaigns and organize a series of annual fundraisers including the SpringFest, pit roast BBQ dinner, and holiday gift cards for staff. According to Area Director Terri Thorn, “The South Bay Chapter Advisory Board is a wonderful group of individuals who have always been extremely supportive. We would not be able to do any of our special events without the assistance of our chapter members and we are so appreciative of their time and service.” The South Bay Chapter Advisory Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Starlight Center. If you or someone you know is interested in joining this remarkable group, please contact Terri Thorn at (619) 427-7524 or tthorn@arc-sd.com. David W. Schneider 2 James O. Fletcher (deceased) Arthur Neumann, CPA George Saadeh Sidney Schuman Remembering The Arc at Year-End Timing Your Year-End Gift To qualify for a deduction in 2012, your gift must be postmarked, delivered, or transacted by Monday December 31st. Here are some helpful hints. It’s the holiday season, the time of the year for charitable giving. We hope you will consider making a contribution to The Arc of San Diego. Your gift will make a difference in the lives of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. US Postal Service The postmark on the envelope not the date on the check is the date of the gift. Here are a few suggestions to make your year-end giving easier: Gift of Cash Making a gift of cash by check or credit card is a convenient way to make a donation. If you itemize, gifts of cash are deductible up to 50% of adjusted gross income. Gift of Securities When you donate stock, bonds, or mutual funds that have appreciated, you avoid paying capital gains tax on the increase in value and claim a charitable deduction up to 30% of adjusted gross income. Gift of Real Estate Depending on the type of gift (personal home, vacation home, acreage, or farm), you may enjoy tax savings, lifetime payments, and freedom from carrying costs once the property is sold. Gift Through Your Will or Living Trust After providing for your loved ones, we hope you will consider remembering The Arc in your estate. Gifts included in wills and living trusts are flexible and easy to arrange. As always, we encourage you to seek advice from your tax advisor. Thank You to Other Delivery For donations sent via FedEx, UPS, or other third party, the date of the gift is the date the nonprofit signs for the package, not the date it was sent. Credit Card The date your account is debited is considered the date of the donation not the date you mailed in your donation. Stock Transfer The date a gift of stock is deposited in the nonprofit brokerage account is the date of the gift, not the date the donor instructs the broker to make the gift. After December 16th, it may be best for you to make your gift by telephone or online to avoid mailing or shipping delays and assure your credit card gift is processed in time to count for 2012 tax purposes. Our Donors October 6, 2012 through November 30, 2012 Our work at The Arc of San Diego, to provide services to children and adults with disabilities, depends on the generosity and hard work of our many donors and volunteers. We are grateful to each of you for your support and commitment to help enhance and improve their quality of life. Telephone Call (619) 685-1175 by 4:00 p.m. PST on Monday, December 31, 2012. More than 350 consumers at North Shores Vocational Center and Arc North County will have access to the latest adapted hardware and software technologies as a result of an $82,322 grant from the California Communications Access Foundation to fund the Technology Inclusion Project at two computer labs. In February 2012, The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce launched a new initiative, the Community Partner Series, to recognize nonprofit organizations across the County that have a significant impact on our community. Isabella was pleasantly surprised to be honored with a certificate recognizing her strong work ethic from the Director of Food Services Program Lt. Col. Jay A. Rogers and Chief Warrant Officer 2, Damian A. Sullivan of the Installation & Logistics Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps OIC West Coast Food Management Team. The Marine Corps Food Team conducts annual inspections at Mess Halls around the country to ensure compliance with existing contracts including food sanitation, food safety, equipment, menu compliance, quality assurance and overall management effectiveness. Isabella has been working at MCRD since June 2011. Hired through Arc Community Employment Services (ACES) Food Services Program, she is a conscientious team player dedicated to doing an outstanding job. Each lab will house 10 desktops, 10 iPads, and assistive tools and applications such as touch screens, mouse devices, oversized keyboards, text-to speech, screen-to-speech, and the award-winning Proloquo2Go software. Additionally, the San Diego Community College District has designated both labs as Community College Continuing Education sites and assigned two instructors to each location. The labs offer sessions in reading, math/ money skills, internet navigation/e-mail use, and music/interactive recreational games. Those seeking employment use the lab for pre-employment preparation, taking advantage of Resume Writing and Internet Job Search classes. We thank the California Communications Access Foundation for helping us bridge the digital divide by providing stateof-the-art computers, hardware, and specialized applications to people with disabilities. 4 The Arc of San Diego is proud to have been selected as ‘Community Partner of the Month’ for October 2012. As Community Partner, The Arc was highlighted in the Chamber’s eNewsletter, on social media, and at the ‘Business After Five’ mixer on October 17th. Chamber mixers draw between 250-300 people and our staff spoke about The Arc and shared information with guests. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce is San Diego’s largest business advocacy organization representing nearly 3,000 businesses and 400,000 member employees. It was an exciting weekend trip for a group of four vacationers who signed up with The Arc of San Diego's Leisure Express Trip and Travel program. They had a happy, fun-filled time at Disneyland and California Adventure. Our adventurers enjoyed the rides, shopping, eating and a spirited celebration at Mickey's Halloween Party. Holiday Bazaar Delights Shoppers Starlight Auxiliary held its Annual Holiday Bazaar the first weekend of November at Norman Center in Chula Vista. A steady flow of shoppers browsed through thousands of items including quality holiday crafts, decorations, jewelry, embroidered linens, handmade toys, baby clothing, jewelry, collectibles, donated items, homebaked goods, white elephant sale, and raffle. Preparation for this successful holiday tradition begins early with dedicated and committed Auxiliary Members collecting, cleaning, sorting, and pricing items throughout the year. The Bazaar, a major fundraising event, raised more than $15,000 to support Starlight Center programs and Building Fund. Elected officials visit Arc Centers in October in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Left: Chula Vista City Councilman Rudy Ramirez and Deputy Mayor of Chula Vista, Steve Castaneda (not pictured), on separate occasions, spoke with consumers and staff at Starlight Center. Right: Representatives from State Assemblyman Brian Jones (District 77) met with Area Director Monica Peralta and consumers at East County Training Center. 5 Giving With Style The Arc of San Diego was one of five beneficiaries of Leonard Simpson’s Fifth Annual 10 Best Dressed Awards held November 30th at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. The event, produced and hosted by Leonard Simpson, creator of Fashion Forward® and premier producer of fashion shows and other high-profile entertainment projects, recognizes 10 women and 10 men for both, their sense of fashion and philanthropic efforts throughout the year. The evening was a celebration of charity and philanthropy with dinner, dance, and a “Style Land” Broadway Show. The Arc of San Diego thanks Arc supporters, Leonard Simpson, Founding Chair, Sally B. Thornton, and Mary Murphy, Honorary Chair. Congratulations to the winners of the 10 Best Dressed Awards for their sense of fashion and giving spirit!
