February 2016 Newsletter - Greater Bay Area Airstream Club
Greater Bay Area Airstream Club Silver Bulletin February 2016 Eray Honeycutt Santa Clara Unit President We arrived Thursday in Gilroy at 2:45pm, where at least 65% of the Airstreams had already arrived and set up. We had social time at 4:00 p.m. as usual, followed by a “burn your own meat and bring a side” dinner. As usual, we had too much food. That evening, we watched “Day and Night” with Tom Cruise. LaVerne popped popcorn and served it in appropriate containers. Friday morning, many of the women had the opportunity to watch a fashion show at 9:00 a.m. at Chico’s before they opened. The comments we heard about on the experience were very positive, and many wallets were a little lighter. Simon and I did some shopping at the outlet stores, then walked around old town Gilroy, had lunch, and then did some browsing in antique stores. At 3:00 p.m., we had a sushimaking demonstration and participation put on by LaVerne, Linda, and Simon. We rolled California rolls (avocado and imitation crab), and LaVerne demonstrated how to stuff tofu skin with rice (I don’t remember the name of that kind of sushi). Happy hour got underway a little late while we enjoyed the fruits of our labor. They were delicious. We also had a short discussion on a few topics, including (1) paying for two free nights at a rally for new members; (2) an informal survey to see if people wanted to pay less for partial hookups or pay more for full hookups at certain future rallies; (3) the name change from Santa Clara Unit to Greater Bay Area Airstream Club; and (4) installation of new members Clark and Betty Dooley, Chris and Lois Summey, Patrick and Nancy Ireland, and Tim Lundell and Penelope O’Neill. (Other new members Harry and Louise Robinson were not present to be installed.) Dinner was teriyaki chicken with broccoli, salad, and rice. Again, way too much food and absolutely delicious. Many joined in the chickenfoot games organized by Judy after dinner. Saturday breakfast at 9:00 a.m. included bagels, coffee, peanut butter and jelly – that really hit the spot. At 10:30 a.m., about 20 of us drove to Coyote Lake to go geocaching and find Peter’s Hideaway, the tin of Airstream memorabilia Eric hid in memory of Peter Heylin. It was cold and muddy but was a beautiful sunny day. We had to pay attention, not bother the cows, and avoid what they left behind. Fanny, Stuart, and Kody all enjoyed the many smells they encountered. It was one of the highlights of the day. Fortino Winery had a tasting demonstration of many of their wines that afternoon. They were very generous with their tasting, and their wines are fantastic. Allen brought a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle that was started the day before. We were making slow progress, especially during happy hour. Dinner was sukiyaki. Sukiyaki is cooked by having a hot pot with a boiling sauce in the middle of the table with raw vegetables and meat that we dipped and cooked at the table. We thanked the McHenrys and the Sicklers for all the hard work they put in to make this rally a success. That evening, card games, as well as the jigsaw puzzle, were the entertainment. On Sunday, Simon and I went out to O.D.’s Kitchen in old Gilroy. It was reasonably priced with huge portions. We then had to pack up to leave. Many people were able to stay and enjoy one more evening at this very welcoming and wonderful park. Robert’s Rules of Order Chris and Lois Summey and Jeff and Lynn Killitz are the first members I know of who did not have to bring their rig to a rally because they currently live at this park. Region 12 President Tom and Hedda Smithson enjoyed visiting members of three different clubs at one rally: the Greater Bay Area, Golden West and Lake Tahoe Airstream Clubs. Eric and LaVerne McHenry cohosted a great rally and led a hike to the Peter Heylin memorial geocache at a nearby park. Bob and Cecelia Stansbury enjoyed not towing their trailer to the rally as they had left it in Gilroy three weeks earlier after a trip to Southern California. Alan and Linda Sickler worked their tails off putting together several meals for the group with a Japanese cuisine theme. Pat and Nancy Ireland seemed to be enjoying themselves at their first rally. Ross and Linda Bauer had to attend a memorial service on Saturday, as did the Stansburys. Larry and Marny Oelze made a long-awaited visit from their home in the foothills outside Madera. They are looking forward to a completely restored motorhome arriving at their home in two weeks. Jack and Kathy Hampel drove over from Patterson to the rally and were leaving for Patrick’s Point after our event. Ken and Judy Bechthold had the power-steering hose blow out in the parking lot at Wal-Mart. After repairs at the Ford dealer, they got it back on Saturday. Bill and Deborah Dash arrived with David in their new Ford F250 pickup on Friday night. Tim Lundell and Penelope O’Neill came in their B van with their new rescued Rottweiler pup named Roxie. They all had a good time. Jack and Shirley Whitcomb experimented with gluten-free eating as Shirley thinks this might help with some medical problems she has been having. Roger and Roberta Peeples came so that Roger could get together with his fellow “hammies” and Roberta could shop at the outlet mall. Ed and Linda Dodge brought their labradoodle, Fanny, to the rally. She just finished whelping two litters of 11 puppies total. The Dodges are happy that is over. Clark and Betty Dooley brought their keyboard over from Los Banos, and everyone enjoyed Clark’s playing at two of our meals. GBAAC President Eray Honeycutt and Simon Yen enjoyed installing our new members into the club. Eray reminded us that the bottom line at all our fun events is the love we have for each other. Gary Prideaux and Pam Parrish didn’t have to drive too far for this one. Pam became a good 3-13 card player. Harry and Louise Robinson came early enough so Louise could go to the fashion show at Chico’s on Friday morning. Yes, she bought some things; and when they left, they were going to their daughter’s house for dinner. Good training, Robinsons. Janiece Fister’s friend, Ghislaine Lang, came for a visit on Sunday evening. She brought a Boston cream pie to share, and Cecelia Stansbury thought it tasted great. Ronnie Dunn Restoring Vintage Airstream for Reba McEntire Reba McEntire is about to become the envy of restored travel trailer enthusiasts all over the country. In a post to his Facebook, her good friend and fellow country superstar Ronnie Dunn revealed an impressive gift that he’s working on for his longtime friend – a restored Airstream. McEntire and Dunn both hail from Oklahoma originally, and they have history going back decades, when she and Brooks & Dunn both competed in the charts and toured together extensively. After Brooks & Dunn went on what seemed like an indefinite hiatus after a farewell tour in 2010, they reunited unexpectedly in 2015 to join McEntire for a residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas titled Reba, Brooks & Dunn: Together in Vegas, which played a number of sold-out dates in 2015 and has been extended into 2016, with more shows running in May. “Greg Vaughn and I are renovating a vintage Airstream for Reba,” Dunn posted on Friday (Jan. 29). “Step 1 . . . strip ’er down to the basics. She’s gonna freak!! RD.” At the moment, “the basics” appears to be a relatively optimistic euphemism for the trailer, which could just as readily be described in Dunn’s photo by saying, “There’s not much left of this Airstream except bare walls, a floor, a toilet . . . and a faraway dream.” But then again, nothing good comes easy, and we’re sure by the time McEntire’s ready to hit the road, Dunn will have her Airstream all decked out and better than the day it first rolled out onto the highway.
