Tony Oursler:
The Influence Machine
Presented in St Peter’s Gardens
over four nights, The Influence
Machine is a haunting multimedia work. Videos of talking
heads are projected onto
smoke, trees and buildings,
their fractured monologues
combining to make a
confessional chorus of the
mass media age. It is as if the
ghosts of our modern
machines have been let out to
roam the city at night. The Art
Gallery will be open until 8pm
on 31 October and 1
November.

Battlefield Paintings
This exhibition of paintings by Cradley-born
artist Brian Yale forms part of the Art Gallery’s
commemoration of the outbreak of the First
World War. After attending Stourbridge School
of Art, Yale studied at the Royal College of Art,
at the same time as David Hockney and Allen
Jones. He was later a designer with the
Greater London Council but during that time
he also pursued his love of painting.
The paintings, dating from the 1980s, are
based on sketches made on the spot of some
of the most famous and tragic battlefields of
the First World War.

The Defiled plus
special guests Avatar
The English Beat ft
Dave Wakeling
As the battle for British
metal's spirit and future rages
on, few astute observers
would bet against The Defiled
emerging triumphant. The
London-based quartet have
had a phenomenal impact on
these shores and beyond
over the last few years, with a
strident, genre-blitzing sound
that both delivers the
crushing, riff-driven goods
and shrewdly redefines what
it means to bring the
21st century mosh.
One tempestuous weekend in
March 1979 was not only the
date of the Three Mile Island
nuclear incident, but also, in
Birmingham, the very first
show by a nascent band
known as The Beat.
Introduced as "the hottest
thing since the Pennsylvania
meltdown", the band had a
sense that the next few years
could well be explosive!
