Did you know ……!
In England, the most commonly used guide dog for the blind is the Yellow
Labrador Retriever.
George Washington had thirty six dogs – all foxhounds.
Emus have double-plumed feathers, & they lay emerald/forest green eggs.
It takes a lobster approximately seven years to grow to be one pound.
Pigs, walruses and light-colored horses can be sunburned.
RIN TIN TIN
Hollywood’s first and arguably best canine superstar was Rin Tin Tin, a
five-day-old German Shepherd found wounded in battle in 1918 in WWI
France. He was adopted by an American soldier, Lee Duncan, who brought
him back to the USA and nicknamed him "Rinty". Rin Tin Tin would sign his
own contracts with his paw print! Rin Tin Tin made 26 pictures for Warner
Brothers between 1918 and 1932. At one time he received 10,000 letters
per week. He died in 1932.

Movie Star Pets
Beethoven
The 1992 film “Beethoven” is one of the most popular and highest-earning
dog-themed films in history. The sequel, “Beethoven 2” was also a huge
success. These films were followed by a series of 5 other Beethoven-related
movies. But the star of the first two is the one who first captured the heart of
filmgoers.
The dog actor who played the lovable but large St. Bernard was actually named
Chris. His trainer was Karl Lewis Miller, who worked with other animal actors on
such films as “K-9”, “Babe” and “Cujo”. Sadly, Chris passed away not long after
completing “Beethoven 2” and producers wondered if they would find another
dog to replace him.
In subsequent films, three dogs performed certain tasks. One, named Benz, did
most of the tricks and physical activities. Dolly (a female) acted well with
puppies and children so she was called upon when they were used in certain
scenes. And Boomer was the third “actor”, bringing to the set his particular
skills which included drooling and doing unusual scenes like being covered in
mud.
FUN TRIVIA
* The term “dog days of summer” was coined by the ancient Greeks and
Romans to describe the hottest days of summer that coincided with the
rising of the Dog Star, Sirius.
* Burmese cats were reputed to have had their own servants. Once owned
by Burmese aristocracy and priests, the Burmese cats were so highly
valued that it was illegal to sell them.
* Prairie dogs are not dogs. A prairie dog is a kind of rodent.
* In Croatia, scientists discovered that lamp-posts were falling down
because a chemical in the urine of male dogs was rotting the metal.
* In the 9th century, King Henry I of Saxony decreed that the fine for killing
a cat should be sixty bushels of corn.
* During the Middle Ages, mixed breeds of peasants’ dogs were required
to wear blocks around their necks to keep them from breeding with noble
hunting dogs.
* The first dog show held in Australia was at Mr. Moore's Horse Bazaar in
Liverpool Street, Hobart, Tasmania on November 12, 1862.
PAW-SCOPES
DOGS
Your dog is a born healer -- it will be naturally attentive to you when you
don't feel well and will go out of its way to take care of you. A truly great
dog to work as a therapy dog.
CATS
Your cat is finicky and extra clean and expects everything in the home to be
the same way. It will not tolerate a dirty litter box and may just report you
to the humane society if you don't keep him or her in an acceptable
environment.
Persians were excellent horsemen and their dominance in the
east was largely due to the Nisean horse, the “superhorse” of
antiquity. The horse was a status symbol in the Persian Empire,
and only Aristocrats could own them. Horses were also used to
play early forms of polo.
Did you know ….!
The only native North American marsupial is the Virginia
opossum (Didelphis Virginiana) also commonly known as
the North American opossum.
It is a nocturnal animal that is almost the same size as the
domestic cat.
The Ostrich
Approximately 20-60 million years ago, ostriches were found
around the Mediterranean Sea in the west, China in the east and
Mongolia in the north. Together with many other large mammals,
ostriches only migrated south across Africa about a million years
ago. It’s a well-documented fact that large ostriches were already
roaming the Western Cape at the time of the landing of Jan van
Riebeeck in 1652.
In the late 19th-century the fashion for ostrich feathers, in hats or
fans, caused farmers to domesticate and breed this largest of birds.
In the late 20th-century there was more interest in it for its meat.

Did you know ……….!
Sodium Bicarbonate (better known as Baking Soda)
The ancient Egyptians used natural deposits of natron, a mixture consisting
mostly of sodium carbonate decahydrate, and sodium bicarbonate. The natron
was ground up, solvated, and used as paint for hieroglyphics and was also
important in the process of mummification.
In 1791, a French chemist, Nicolas Leblanc, produced sodium carbonate, also
known as soda ash. In 1846, two New York bakers, John Dwight and Austin
Church, established the first factory to develop baking soda from sodium
carbonate and carbon dioxide. This compound, referred to as saleratus, is
mentioned in the novel Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling as being used
extensively in the 1800s as a preservative in commercial fishing to prevent
freshly caught fish from spoiling.
Difference between baking soda and baking powder
Baking soda is a pure substance. Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda, a
powdered acid, and cornstarch.
Baking soda is alkaline, so acid is used in baking powder to avoid a metallic taste
when the chemical change during baking creates sodium carbonate. However,
to avoid the over-flavoring of acidic taste, non-acid ingredients such as whole
milk or Dutch-processed cocoa must be added. For much more info:

Schonbrunner Zoo
The Schonbrunner Zoo in Vienna, Austria
was founded in 1792, making it the oldest
zoo in the world. Be sure to visit the
Rainforest House and Artic Polarium
