Valley Bank HONORING DISTINGUISHED SCHOLARS AND ACHIEVERS 2014 WELCOME TO A CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE! AND THE DISTINGUISHED EDUCATORS WHO INSPIRED THEM A Celebration of Excellence provides public recognition of extraordinary public school students and outstanding educators. By honoring achievements of these individuals, the Foundation: n n Demonstrates community appreciation for the efforts of public school students, educators and parents; Acknowledges the critical partnership among schools, home, business and the community; n n Provides a positive reinforcement for younger students and a goal for which they can strive; and Involves the community and business in building awareness and confidence in our public schools. STUDENTS A Celebration of Excellence recognizes exceptional students who have demonstrated their efforts in the classroom, school and in the community day after day, year after year. Distinguished Scholars were selected on the basis of criteria developed by high school students, teachers and administrators, including grade point average; number of honors, advanced placement and other higher level courses; total credit hours; activities; and community service. High school teachers nominated Distinguished Achievers based on excellence in a specific curricular area, leadership, service or overcoming obstacles to achievement. EDUCATORS A Celebration of Excellence honors the Distinguished Educators. Each student identified an educator to recognize who has had a significant, positive impact on his or her life and wrote a short message about why that educator was selected. The Helena Education Foundation salutes these fine educators and thanks them for sharing their talents, knowledge, creativity and love of learning with our youth. They make a difference in our schools and community, one student and one class at a time. When I was a freshman, my goal was to drop out as soon as I turned 16. My attitude was poor. Without her and my loving family I would have dropped out of high school. When she came into my life, she changed me, because no matter how rude and disrespectful I was, she always continued to show unconditional love. After I met her I was inspired to better myself. She nurtured me with life lessons and taught me that no matter what, she would always be there for me. Mrs. Chamberlain was the only adult during this time who understood my desire to be free, rather than controlled. One of the rules at Montana City School was “no hats in school.” At that point in my life, my blue zigzag, striped beanie was the only thing keeping me grounded. Multiple times, the administration asked me to take off my hat while I, not understanding their rules, refused. Later that week, Mrs. Chamberlain proposed to me that I write a letter to the administration, like this: Dear Principal, please let me wear my hat in school. I love it very much. I promise it won’t hurt anyone. From, Jo. This short letter was my first step to becoming the independent person that I am today. Mrs. Chamberlain has been one of the most memorable influences in my life, and I will forever stay true to the lesson that she taught me that day: any obstacle can be passed if you are willing to stay true to your heart. He ceaselessly pours his heart and optimistic personality into his teaching. The genuine, amicable joy glowing inside him inspires me daily. I greatly value his personal encouragement, guidance, and faith in me. Our sidesplitting laughs add “extra flavor crystals” to my life. He has motivated me to further study my Spanish passion as a career. I am sincerely grateful to know Señor Lyng as a true friend and teacher. ¡Muchas gracias!
