There are four key pillars to the celebration of the Bicentennial: History & Celebration Youth & Education Nature Conservation Community Involvement. Bicentennial Torch Relay As part of Indiana’s Bicentennial celebration in 2016, the state will have a Torch Relay, which is similar to the Olympic Torch Relay. Currently, nominations are being sought for torch bearers. We’ll continue to accept nominations until December 31, 2015. The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay was created to honor Hoosiers who demonstrate: Exceptional public service to their county and/or community Achievement and excellence in their profession Acts of heroism Exceptional volunteer service and leadership to their neighborhood, community, region or state To nominate a torch bearer, visit http://www.indiana2016.org/ torchrelay/nomination-forms/. For more information on nominating torch bearers, contact Halea Franklin at hfranklin@insidegreenecounty.com or 812.847.4500. 2 Each pillar has its own area and activities. Our group meets the third Wednesday of each month to plan events incorporating each pillar. We’re currently planning many events such as a motorcycle ride and a family picnic at the 4-H Fairgrounds. If you are interested in being a part of planning the celebration, contact Halea Franklin at hfranklin@insidegreenecounty.com or 812.847.4500. Shopping Locally Creates Jobs Shops in our small communities create local employment and self-employment. Local Shops Invest More In Our Communities Local businesses are more generous in their support of local charities, schools and community events. Supporting local businesses means a financial impact on our communities. Cash Mobs — Coming to a Local Business Near You! Statistically, for every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $68 goes back into the local economy; however for every $100 spent at corporate chain stores, only $43 goes back into the local economy. GCEDC staff, along with the Linton-Stockton and Bloomfield Chambers of Commerce, are planning a buy local campaign called “Cash Mobs”. We will target the small, local businesses that make each community special in order to give the business owners an economic stimulus. The concept is simple; we choose a business and a date and decide to meet there and spend $20 cash. Our locally owned small businesses have a lot to Shopping Local Retains Our Communities People don’t like losing businesses and services but often don’t equate this to how they spend their money. offer that some of the big box stores cannot. Anyone can participate. We feel now is the perfect time for our community to think “buy local”. More information about our Cash Mobs dates and locations will be announced soon via our website and social media outlets.
