The New Gods of New Genesis know that Earth will one day give rise to a Fifth World of superbeings, already heralded by the abundance of super heroes, to prevent the New Gods of Apokolips from finding the Anti-Life Equation. OF THE WORLDS On its fourth passing, the godwave infused the Old Gods’ divided world. Out of the ashes arose two molten planets, New Genesis and Apokolips, collectively known as the Fourth World. New Genesis was home to the noble, near-immortal New Gods, who lived in harmony with their lush and verdant planet. Conversely, the denizens of nearby Apokolips were cunning and cruel, and dedicated to evil. For millions of years, New Genesis and Apokolips waged war upon one another until a peace pact was negotiated with the exchange of hostages, each the son of one world’s leader.True to his nature, Apokolips’s ruler DARKSEID broke his pact with New Genesis’s ruler HIGHFATHER by invading Earth in search of the Anti-Life Equation, the means to control all sentient life in the universe. Thus, the conflict began anew, but this time with Darkseid’s own son, ORION, siding with New Genesis. Highfather’s heir, Scott Free, would first fend off Darkseid’s agents on Earth in the guise of MISTER MIRACLE before returning to his homeworld and joining the New Gods in defiance of Darkseid’s eternal enmity. Since then, the New Gods have fought tirelessly to maintain the balance of power first struck in the godwave’s release. SB 6 3 16 1 17 19 18 FIRST GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL 2nd series #9 (September 2000) The deaths of five of the second FLASH’s Rogues Gallery unleashed the demon Neron, a Prince of Hell, who granted dozens of villains, as well as a few costumed heroes, increased powers in exchange for their souls. At the suggestion of the TRICKSTER II, CAPTAIN MARVEL offered his soul to Neron in exchange for Earth’s freedom. As the Trickster deduced, Marvel’s soul was too pure for the demon to touch, but Neron was forced to honor his end of the bargain. Subsequently, the Flash and his wife (see PARK, LINDA) managed to outwit Neron and foil a rampage by the Rogues’ ghosts, restoring them to life. During this event, known as the Day of Judgment, Neron was imprisoned by an unholy alliance of the DEMON Etrigan, ASMODEL, and the SPECTRE. Breaking free from his prison by possessing SUPERMAN’s body, Neron attempted to claim the Spectre-Force for himself, but the Spectre instead chose Hal Jordan, the second GREEN LANTERN as its new human host. Neron was sent back to Hell, and since he had broken Hell’s rules by using its power for his own pleasure, he was demoted from a Prince to a Rhymer by his fellow demons. Furious, Neron realized that this had been Etrigan’s plan all along. The ruler of part of the underworld known as Kurnugi has bedeviled mankind since he was first worshiped by the ancient Mesopotamians. Nergal was not of this Earth, but extraterrestrial rather than supernatural. When Kyle Rayner (GREEN LANTERN IV) and archaeologist Sala Nisaba (SALA) encountered Nergal in the Syrian Desert, they learned that he was, in fact, one of the Controllers who had departed the planet Oa millennia before. With his immortal kin, Nergal wandered the universe and eventually settled on Earth, assuming the guises of tyrannical gods to the Mesopotamians. However, Nergal and his kin were defeated by Ninurta, a hero who wielded a primitive power ring and was perhaps Earth’s first Green Lantern, and Nergal’s cousin Istar who wielded a ringstaff. The rogue Controllers were imprisoned within Kurnugi until their discovery by Sala during an excavation. Nergal empowered Sala with the powers of her ancestor, Istar, in order to use her ringstaff and Kyle’s power ring to destroy the gateway that prevented Nergal’s return to Earth. After a tumultuous battle, Green Lantern called upon his JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA comrades to help Sala defeat Nergal and send him back to his prison in Kurnugi. SB 218 A small-time crook working for Lex Luthor (see LUTHOR, LEX), Nat Tryon made a poor choice when he and two other thugs agreed to sabotage a nuclear reactor. The radiation sickened Tryon, and a second dose of radiation—intended to reverse the effects of the first exposure— turned him into a living nuclear reaction.Wearing a containment suit,Tryon became the superpowered criminal Neutron. For some reason he blamed SUPERMAN for his explosive state and picked a fight with the Man of Steel. He lost that showdown and earned a term of incarceration at S.T.A.R. Labs, where scientists hoped to treat his unfortunate condition. Neutron gained his freedom from S.T.A.R. Labs when PSIMON and several other super-villains freed him. He joined the reformed FEARSOME FIVE and fought both Superman and the TEEN TITANS. Neutron remains a malevolent force of destruction. Lost on a desert mission, he discovered an oasis whose lake was filled with glowing water. He drank from the lake, his clothing was transformed, and he was able to project energy bolts from his hands. Corbett became Neon the Unknown and joined the FREEDOM FIGHTERS, a hero team gathered by the mystic being UNCLE SAM to defend the U.S. from Axis forces during World War II. On December 6, 1941, Uncle Sam warned several Fighters, including Neon, of a terrible impending attack. Arriving at Pearl Harbor the next day, the Freedom Fighters witnessed the Japanese assault on the base. Neon was killed in the bombing.
