A Message from the CEO
This is an exciting time for Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. I’m so pleased
with and proud of recent recognition the hospital received for
outstanding patient experience, quality, technology, and performance.
While our physicians and staff are committed to providing excellent,
personalized care to our patients and their families, this formal
recognition is so important because it comes from those we’ve cared
for. Through surveys and other feedback, our patients have consistently
given us high marks, and I want to take this opportunity to say ‘Thank
You.’ The Blue Hill team is dedicated to improving the health and
wellness of our community, and we are grateful for the opportunity to
care for our friends and neighbors every day.
John Ronan, President and CEO
The hospital has been diligently working on a master facility plan to ensure we are well-prepared
for the future. We have recently completed careful analysis that includes a permanent location
for Blue Hill Cardiovascular Medicine, improved space for the oncology/infusion clinic, cardiac
rehabilitation, facility upgrades to Blue Hill Family Medicine, and private patient rooms in the
medical-surgical unit. There will be much to come on this once the overall campus plan is closer to
being finalized.
The annual meeting of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital will be held August 4, 2015 under the big tent.
Last year was the first year we held the meeting outside, across from the hospital, and it worked
well. The larger space meant that more community members were able to participate. If you plan to
attend, please RSVP to Marcy Phippen at (207) 374-3410.
As always, thank you for your continued support of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.
Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment
Assistance Available
Financial counseling has always been available at BHMH to help patients with
questions about their medical bills, financial assistance, and set up payment plans.
This year, however, our certified application counselors expanded their services
to help those who wish to enroll in health insurance plans through the Health
Insurance Marketplace. Assistance was available daily during open enrollment,
and continues to be offered for those who are eligible to enroll in a program now
because of a qualifying life-changing event.
Robyn McElyea, Financial Counselor,
Patient Accounting, BHMH

“We are so pleased that we could offer this service to our patients and neighbors,”
explains Rachel Fowler, BHMH Financial Services analyst. “We experienced great
success signing up many people who have struggled to cover the costs of their
healthcare, and we hope that this will enable them to seek out the preventative care
that they need to stay as healthy as possible.”

Cover Story
Prior to last November, Blaise deSibour had regularly visited
his primary care physician and made the occasional visit
to a hospital emergency department for minor injuries, but
he never spent a night in the hospital. Over the years, he
wondered about the relationship between Blue Hill Memorial
Hospital and EMHS, unsure if it was the right thing. He was
concerned that BHMH was being “swallowed up” by a larger
organization. He was worried that his hospital could lose its
identity and with it the ability to serve the healthcare needs
of the community. He struggled with these thoughts as he
remembered his grandmother’s tireless efforts to support the
hospital. He had questions about donating; where his money
would go and did BHMH even need it anymore?
In the summer of 2014, Blaise attended Blue Hill Memorial
Hospital’s Annual Meeting. As he listened to president
and CEO, John Ronan’s message, he began to think a little
differently. However, he still wondered how the hospital
benefits from being part of a larger health delivery system.
Now, fast forward to 8:30 am on November 3, 2014. As Blaise
tells it, he had been using a chainsaw near his property when
his brother-in-law, Troy Clapp, found him on the ground —
trapped. “Part of the tree that I was cutting broke off and drove
me and the chainsaw into the tree stump, breaking my femur.”
From the very first responders and ambulance crew, to the
emergency department and other staff at Blue Hill Memorial
Hospital, Blaise says, “to see the caring faces of people you
know was an awesome thing.” He is still amazed that “between
the Blue Hill emergency department; Eastern Maine Medical
Center’s surgical, recovery, and inpatient units; as well as
his own primary care team, everyone seemed to know him
and about his situation. He remains grateful for a seamless
exchange of timely information that flowed between BHMH
and EMMC.
Today, with first-hand knowledge, Blaise has a new-found
appreciation for and understanding of the relationship
between his hospital and EMHS. “The benefits from
information sharing (through the electronic medical records
system), immediate access to skilled trauma and surgical
specialists at EMMC, the personal, familiar care at Blue Hill,
and support from my primary care team was immeasurable.”
As an employee at Blue Hill Garage, he explains, “You don’t
see or hear from customers when their cars are running well
and rarely do we hear from customers that all is okay, but
we typically hear when something is wrong. The same seems
to happen with the hospital.” Blaise decided that sharing his
personal story was a perfect opportunity to let the community
know that Blue Hill Memorial Hospital “is working,” the
relationship with EMHS “is working,” and that “we should
support and promote the services that our local, community
hospital has to offer.”
The happy ending to Blaise’s story: nine weeks later, after
challenging rehabilitation work and the coordinated care
provided by BHMH, Blaise was able to enjoy an adventure
vacation in Colombia!
Blue Hill Memorial Hospital has been a member of EMHS
since 2005. EMHS members work collaboratively to provide
high quality, coordinated care close to home. Patients,
providers, and communities all have roles in today’s health
delivery system, and by working together we can achieve
better results. We want you to be healthy, productive, and
living your healthiest life possible. We are dedicated to
providing the right care, at the right time, and in the right
place. Together we’re stronger.
When Given a Choice
When given a choice, no one desires to stay in a hospital. We would all much rather be in our
own homes with familiar people and things that make us comfortable. However, there are times
when hospitalization is necessary due to illness or surgery. When a stay is needed, it is when we
are not feeling our best. For all of these reasons, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital is committed to
doing everything we can to make a stay here as comfortable and “home-like” as possible. We
have always strived to provide exceptional customer service, and we are taking that promise to
the next level by looking at all aspects of our patient experience. Recently, we asked our patients
and employees how we can improve and the response was extraordinary. More than 50 ideas
were submitted ranging from better reading material, to hospital gowns that do not hang open in the back, to music therapy,
and on and on. We are working on making as many of these improvements as we can in order to help our patients feel more
comfortable when staying with us. Sometimes it is the smallest things that make the biggest difference.

“It is not just what you eat; it is what is eating you.” That
phrase, says Gordana Hassett, LCSW, sums up the issues
that were addressed in the Weight Management Group held
this spring in Castine. “We focus on unresolved emotional
issues that we sometimes try to manage with food,”
she explains.

A new pain management
group is now meeting at
BHMH for patients who are
living with chronic pain. The
purpose of the group is to
expose participants to new
ways to deal with their pain.
“We used the book, ‘Managing

cognitive behavioral therapy,
recognizing styles of thinking and cognitive distortions that
may exacerbate the pain, and various
complementary therapies.”
Complementary care providers were invited to visit
the group to share how their services can be a possible
intervention to manage their pain. Acupuncture, Yoga,
Feldenkrais, Reiki, and nutritional care were all discussed
and each group meeting began with a meditation or guided
imagery exercise. Feedback from participants has been
positive: “I am leaving with better understanding on pacing
myself, self-control, and living to make me happy even if it
may cause pain. It was nice to meet with people having the
same pain as myself and with different ailments.”
Patty, and group co-leader Jan Watson, RN, heard
repeatedly from the participants that having chronic pain
can be very isolating and can contribute to depression
and anxiety. As a result, they are now offering a free
monthly pain support group for the graduates of the pain
management group’s program. This additional group
offering provides ongoing support for participants and
reinforces what was learned in the pain management group,
ensuring lasting benefits.
In addition to the pain management and support groups,
patients are encouraged to talk with their primary care
provider regarding a pain treatment plan. A plan may

Introducing the Healthy
Peninsula Community
Resource Guide
The Healthy Peninsula Community
Resource Guide is a searchable
database of primarily non-profit
health and human service resources in
greater Hancock County. The online
guide features information to keep community members
and professionals alike connected with up-to-date resource
and program listings, including statewide resources that are
available to families, seniors, and adults with chronic illness.
Caregivers on the Blue Hill Peninsula, Stonington and Deer
Isle, and across Hancock County will also find this to be
a valuable resource. The development of this website is a
collaboration of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and Healthy
Peninsula, and generously funded by the Thriving In Place
Downeast grant awarded to Healthy Peninsula and their
nine community partners by the Maine Health
Access Foundation.
