MCTs are fats composed of fatty acids of 8-10 carbons, which can be found in small amounts in
coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and in milk – especially goat milk. The triglycerides are easily
digested into fatty acids that are absorbed from the intestine into the portal vein for direct
access to the liver. In the liver, MCTs are rapidly metabolized into ketones which are used by the
brain, heart, and muscle as an alternate energy source. Contrast this pathway to those of long
chain fatty acids (C12 or greater) which are absorbed from the intestine into the lymphatic
system for transport to adipose tissue for storage.

1. The FDA amended to the “Medium-Chain Triglycerides” designation in the early 1990s. The “Medium-Chain Triglycerides” terminology
is also supported by The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, World Health Organization (FAO/WHO), Canada’s
List of Non-Medicinal Ingredients, multiple publications, as well as monographs in the National Formulary (NF), European Pharmacopoeia
(EP), Japanese Pharmaceutical Excipients (JPE).

4. “Medium-Chain Triglycerides” (MCT) were initially called “Fractionated Coconut Oil.” The “Fractionated Coconut Oil” designation originated from the production process to obtain the raw materials.
