Cuter than, say, a tiny ladybird trundling across a flower? We will find out this month as the winners of the North East Wildlife Photography Awards are announced at Great North Museum: Hancock. More than 1,600 photos were entered this year and you can see the shortlisted entries, meet the photographers and find out who has won at the free awards event on July 9. As well as a preview of the exhibition, the awards event will feature a talk from BBC naturalist George McGavin. An exhibition of the winning images will run until September 27. Great North Museum: Hancock, July 9, free northeastwildlifephoto.co.uk ALL BAA NONE With material veering from the staunchly political to the wildly silly, you never know what you’re going to get with the Canadian comic Glenn Wool. The title of his work-inprogress show doesn’t give much away either: Creator, I Am But A Pawn could be a work of religious soul searching or a rant about chess. Either way, you’re assured a good time thanks to his caustic humour and theatrical charm. The Stand July 14, £10 thestand.co.uk 4 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK ARE WE SITTING COMFORTABLY? Having been closed for a refurb, the Centre for Children’s Books reopens with a fab line-up of exhibitions for book-loving youngsters. New exhibits include a show from writer-illustrator Michael Foreman looking at the importance of friendship, a lively and colourful nursery rhyme exhibition, and A Bear Called Paddington, in which everyone’s favourite Peruvian bear comes to life in manuscripts and original illustrations. Seven Stories, from July 19, from £6, sevenstories.org.uk GOOD BYE BOOK IT! Bibliophiles rejoice - BALTIC’s Artists’ Book Market is back with wares from artists, bookmakers, small press publishers, zine artists and bookbinders. Get involved in a bookmaking workshop, learn how to create a book using iPad software or go lo-fi with your very own photocopied perzine (that’s a personal zine to you and me). BALTIC, July 10-11, free, balticmill.com Theatre maker Daniel Bye’s new work Going Viral preys on our fears of contamination in the digital and physical world, fusing thrilling storytelling, playful comedy and educational elements in a nerve-shredding story in which a strange new disease sweeps the world. The show is followed by a discussion with scientific adviser and infections specialist Dr Mark Booth at which you can settle your fears - or not! Northern Stage July 15-16, from £8 northernstage.co.uk COME DINE WITH US This summer’s NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week is just around the corner with the city’s best restaurants including Indian streetfood kitchen Dabbawal (pictured), Café 21 and Carluccio’s already signed up to take part in what is expected to be the biggest Restaurant Week yet. I love River Island as it’s always up to date when it comes to trends, and it’s really good value. BEST FOR LUGGAGE? I tend to shop around when I need luggage. So far this year, Debenhams has had the best offers and I’ve bagged a couple of bargains. BEST FOR SUNGLASSES? I’ve never been able to keep a pair of sunglasses for very long so I normally grab a couple of affordable pairs from Primark so I’m not too upset when I leave them by the pool or in my hotel. IMAGE CREDITS: © Hugo Glendinning BEST FOR GUIDE BOOKS? WH Smith is always my go to as their travel section is huge. BEST FOR SUN CREAM? I always go to Boots just before my holidays for all those last minute essentials. Black Gate, July 10-11, £10 newcastlecastle.co.uk Home-grown comic talent will test their latest work one last time at Northern Stage before heading north to the Edinburgh Fringe festival this month. The group of top-notch comedians includes some of the region’s finest up-andcoming talent. Northern Stage July 30 £5, northern stage.co.uk WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK 7 TRY THIS TRY THIS SPLASH! Step into the belly of a whale at BALTIC with a new exhibition aboard a 71ft container built to reimagine ‘the longest lorry in the world’ used in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s to transport a preserved whale around Europe. Fiona Tan’s Depot reimagines the journeys of Jonah The Giant Whale, a massive blue whale caught in Norwegian waters in 1952 which caused a sensation across Europe. Google tells us the whale’s remains are in a warehouse somewhere in Germany, perhaps Belgium - there is some debate - so Tan’s container is instead filled with curiosities and a film installation offering an insight into Newcastle’s whaling history. BALTIC, July 10-November 1, free balticmill.com LOOK INTO MY EYES Given the name of Rob Temple’s show, Live & Outrageous, you can be certain that the controversial hypnotist will provide a noholds barred performance. A purveyor of irresistible charm and naughty sketches, Temple lets you become the star of the show in ways you could never dream of. Don’t blame us if you spend a week after the show thinking you’re a chicken... The Stand, July 21, £10 thestand.co.uk QUEER AS FOLK Ideally timed for the city’s Pride celebrations, Joseph Mercier and Panic Lab’s double bill of dance performances explore queerness and masculinity. Swan Lake 2: Dark Waters isn’t as scary as it sounds, as the solo portrait explores the depiction of the prince in the iconic ballet. Meanwhile, Versus’ mixed martial arts displays a fusion of choreographed movement and wrestling to provide a thrilling dance performance inspired by the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. Drawing with Scissors features lithographic prints of exuberant cut-outs produced in the last four years of Matisse’s life, and includes iconic images such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes (pictured). The lithographic reproductions in this exhibition are from a special double issue of Verve, a review of art and literature published in 1958. The show focuses on the brilliant final chapter of Matisse’s long career. ‘There is no gap between my earlier pictures and my cut-outs,’ Matisse wrote. ‘I have only reached a form reduced to the essential through greater absoluteness and greater abstraction.’ University Gallery, July 18-Sept 11, free northumbria.ac.uk/universitygallery getintonewcastle.co.uk WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK 11 MONUMENT MOVIES NE1 MONUMENT MOVIES IS BACK! The main event takes place on the Town Moor, with stalls and themed zones including a cabaret tent, women’s area and a family and youth zone, and a main stage which this year hosts local acts alongside pop superstars. The festival site is open 6.45pm-9.15pm on Friday, noon7pm on Saturday and 1pm-8pm Sunday and once the park closes you can continue with the party in the city with special events at a number of venues. Friday July 17 The weekend kicks off with the Northern Frontrunners’ LGBT 5K, where drag queens will line up with elite athletes for a fundraising run (register online at www.northernfrontrunners.co.uk). The Town Moor stage will then host Dale Ali, Jamie Lee Harrison and Abba Girlz. Saturday July 18 Hoping to top last year’s record attendance of 7,000, the Pride parade starts at noon at the Civic Centre. This year’s theme - One Love, 45 Years of World Pride - calls for fancy dress, bright colours and lots of noise. Over at the Town Moor, the finishing point for the parade, doubledenim-sporting Irish girl group B*Witched will be joined by X Factor finalists Lucy Spraggan and Kitty Brucknell, British/ Belgian pop duo DeltAmour, and local talent including Annabel Patterson, Cortney Dixon and Drag Idol 2015 winner, Gucci Gabore. Saturday night sees queer club night POKE take over The Globe too. Sunday July 19 ‘80s pop icon Belinda Carlisle headlines the main stage on Sunday with live music throughout the day from acts including X Factor’s Joseph Whelan, Heather Peace, South Tyneside band The Waiters, drag star Daisy Diamond and Newcastle singer-songwriters Sam Dickinson, Samantha Durnan and Channy Thompson. The event closes with a candlelit vigil from 9pm at the Civic Centre. Town Moor, July 17-19, northern-pride.org 20 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK PRIDE 2015 with Newcastle-based stencil artist idA4, AKA Chris Fleming B*Witched Belinda Carlisle The whole city enjoys Pride - one of its great successes is that straight people celebrate too. I’m a 36-year-old man, in a loving relationship with fantastic family, amazing friends, and living in a country that legally recognises me, protects me and gives me equal rights, but it’s not that long since I would have been imprisoned, and definitely not interviewed or given an opportunity to exhibit my work. Pride stems from people saying ‘I won’t take this’, and because we can celebrate, we should. There are people who don’t have that opportunity. I know what I feel, I know that being gay is real and not a choice, so I can’t imagine what it must be like to not be able to be yourself. Pride sends a message of hope to others, to show people that they’re not alone. For me, being involved in Northern Pride is as much about the Northern as the gay bit - this region is class, and ours is one of the only free Prides of this size, so everyone should have a good time, be proud of Newcastle and its gay community. I’ve got an exhibition on so I’ll be in the gallery every day over the weekend - apart from when Belinda Carlisle’s on - I ain’t missing that!
