In honor of the wildlife who
call our parks home.
Welcome friends, neighbors,
and associates!
I remember taking Earth Science in the 9th grade. Mr.
Johnston was one of those amazing teachers – his
passion for the natural world was so inspiring that I
found myself enthralled by science for the first time in
my young life.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you this
evening to Washington’s National Park Fund’s Spring
Dinner and Auction. You can certainly feel the passion
we all share for Mount Rainier, North Cascades and
Olympic National Parks. You can also feel the deep
sense of appreciation the parks have for all of us as we
come together to celebrate and RAISE MUCH NEEDED
MONEY FOR THEM!
When I started with Washington’s National Park Fund
five years ago, I found myself focusing mainly on the
trails, volunteerism, search and rescue, and junior ranger programs for youth
and their families. Then I started learning about the funds we were awarding for
science and research and discovered a whole new world, similar to the world Mr.
Johnston had opened up to me so many years ago. Thanks to YOU, the parks’
supporters, we’ve been funding tracking collars for the Roosevelt Elk so scientists
could learn of their migration patterns at Olympic National Park. We’re funding
the ongoing release of fishers, members of the weasel family, in all three parks.
We’ve been supporting ongoing research of melting glaciers and the impact
climate change is having on the parks’ butterflies and plants. A few years back I
asked myself “What could butterflies have to do with educating us about climate
change?” Then I met Regina Rochefort. You’ll see what I mean later this evening
when we view tonight’s video during the Fund-a-Need.
If science and research stirs something special in you, than tonight’s theme –
Our Parks, Their Home – resonates well. We’re celebrating “our parks” which
are occupied by the fishers, butterflies, Roosevelt elk, bears, and more. The
parks are THEIR home; we’re the fortunate ones who get to visit them when
we’re there.
Help us help them, will you please? When we get to Fund-A-Need, dig a wee bit
deeper knowing that your tax-deductible support is helping park scientists and
rangers do the work that they do. Funding for science and research has been
cut SO dramatically in recent years. Let’s come together and make a difference
for the parks – and the wildlife that call them home.
This high-energy gathering is a key fundraiser for our parks. As Laurie shared on
the previous page, our focus this evening is building upon our recent successes
with funding science and research projects within the parks. The parks’
researchers and scientists do so much with the limited funding that they receive.
Your support impacts Mount Rainier, North Cascades and Olympic National Parks
and their push to gain a better understanding of the natural world around them.
While I’ve stood on Mount Olympus while core samples were taken from
high upon Blue Glacier, you may not have the time or ability to volunteer as a
“citizen scientist” who goes out with park staff to conduct the research. But
tonight, you’ll have the opportunity to empower those who do. Help us to raise
thousands of dollars to continue this legacy.
Thanks again to our very talented auction team, and especially to each of you.
Thanks for being here and supporting our parks!
Sincerely,
Bret Wirta, President of the Board,
Washington’s National Park Fund

OUR AUCTIONEER
You’ll Come A Long Way Baby: About Our Auctioneer, Laura Michalek
Fundraising Auctioneer Laura Michalek still relies on the endurance and discipline
she possessed when at the age of 15, she was the first female winner of the
Chicago Marathon. While
Ms. Michalek has hardly
missed a day of running
since then, it’s this intention
to excel at what she loves
that is most evident. “To
me Auctioneering is about
giving a lot of yourself,
before and during the
event, in a way that most
folks wouldn’t expect.”
Her style, fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients, and their mission,
not only sets her apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest
dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how non-profits I care about
are going to sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a thrill to know I can
personally and professionally be part of that.” For 15 years prior to becoming
a full time Fundraising Professional, Ms. Michalek owned and operated several
nationally recognized vintage modern furniture stores in Seattle. “My critical
eye, intuition, and energy level has been pretty consistent all these years, so
whenever I set out to do something, it’s the same set of skills, just a slightly more
developed new chapter.” As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago
Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed
her whole life. “When I start Auctioneering, it’s like being in the starting block all
over again, and I still set out to win, however this time it’s for the organization
I’m representing.”
To hear what folks are saying about Ms. Michalek visit www.lauramichalek.com
or email auctioneer@lauramichalek.com or call direct at 206.464.0850.

AUCTION RULES
Each bidder will be given a bidder number upon check in. By bidding in the live
or silent auction, each bidder agrees to these auction rules:
1. To bid in the silent auction, simply write your bid number on the silent auction bid form. Designation of the bid you have written, by the silent auction official as the top bid, is a legal
contract to purchase the silent auction item.
2.
To bid in the live auction, hold up your bid card with the number toward the auctioneer.
A bid acknowledged by the live auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item.
The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is merely a fractional advance over
the prior bid.
3.
Top bidders must pay for their items at the end of the night. Unless otherwise stated, all items
are to be removed on the date purchased. The purchaser assumes responsibilities to locate and
remove purchases from the auction premises. Purchasers may claim the certificate for services
and tangible items not displayed from the cashier/item pick-up volunteer. You will be asked to
show your “Paid” receipt for tangible items.
4.
Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor
unless otherwise noted. Tickets for travel packages are for coach class unless otherwise noted.
No refunds will be allowed on travel packages even on canceled tickets or accommodations.
Travel will be provided by donors as described. Because travel charges change, travel costs may
decrease the values stated, however, no refunds will be allowed.
5.
Each person who is issued a bid number (bidder) assumes all risks and hazards related to the
auction and items obtained at the auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability
Washington’s National Park Fund, its elected and appointed officials, members and employees,
the auctioneers, the event organizers, sponsors and/or volunteers connected with the auction.
6.
Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only. All purchases are final and there will be
no exchanges or refunds unless otherwise noted. We will gladly accept your payment by cash,
check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover on the night of the auction. We are a
501 (c)(3) charitable organization and your payment may be tax-deductible only to the extent
provided by law.
7. Unless otherwise noted, all goods and services must be claimed and used within one year of
the auction date.
8.
Washington’s National Park Fund reserves the right to add or withdraw, without notice, any
items to or from the auction. Washington’s National Park Fund has attempted to describe and
catalog all items correctly, but all items are offered “as is, where is.” Washington’s National Park
Fund neither warrants nor represents and, in no event shall be responsible for, the correctness
or descriptions, genuineness, authorship, provenance or condition of the items. No statement
made in this catalog, or made orally at the auction or elsewhere, shall be deemed as such
warranty, representation or assumption of liability. The value listed is our estimate of fair market
value. Items have not been appraised unless so noted.

Happy Birthday, National Park Service!
The National Park Service turns 100 on August 25, 2016, and everyone can take
part in the celebration. The centennial will kick off a second century of stewardship
of America's national parks and engaging communities through recreation,
conservation, and historic preservation programs. We invite you to find your park
and discover the national parks and programs in your own backyard!
Live Auction
Begins at 7:30 p.m.
Early Leaders of the Park Service Idea
The National Parks are uniquely American. Celebrate the visionaries who came
before us with groundbreaking ideas – not only about preserving our nation's
"crown jewels", but also extending the National Park Service’s mission to some of
the nation’s other uniquely American treasures. Because of them, the agency today
manages a range of cultural sites including monuments, parkways, battlefields,
cemeteries, and recreation areas. This rich variety has created a portfolio of over
400 parks, all with their own special contribution to the American story.
The National Park Service of the 21st Century continues forward with a team of
unsung heroes. Some are rangers who lead tours and provide for visitor safety.
Others maintain, clean, and repair our parks. And even further behind the scenes,
are a legion of administrators, historic preservationists, archeologists, and ecologists
striving to discover more about America’s past, so that it can be preserved and
passed on to future generations.
Special thanks goes out to our local friends at REI for playing
such a key and leadership role in this celebration.

OUR PARKS, THEIR HOME
The critters were there first and
deserve a little extra support.
Each year, park leadership from Mount Rainier, North Cascades and
Olympic National Parks submit priority projects to Washington’s
National Park Fund. One of their four core areas* that is sorely
lacking in funding – science and research – is our focus tonight.
In recent years, WNPF has raised funds so park rangers and
scientists can continue researching:
Learn more about the details associated with each of
these projects and all other 2016 park priorities at:
http://wnpf.org/funding-priorities-2016/
* Four core areas of support include:
1. Strengthening Science and Research
2. Improving Visitors’ Experiences
3. Expanding Volunteerism and Stewardship
4. Bringing more Youth and Families into the Parks
• Migration patterns of the Roosevelt Elk
• The successful release of fishers (members of the weasel family)
back into our parks, THEIR homes
• The impact shrinking glaciers have on vegetation within the parks
• The wisdom butterflies can impart upon all of us as they shift with
the changing climate
• The air quality up at Mount Rainier and educating the public
about carbon emissions
Without strong support, these areas would go unfunded.
With your support this evening, Washington’s National Park Fund
will be able to fund these three priorities for 2016:
1. The Cascade Butterfly Project at North Cascades National Park
2. The impact trails have on native plant restoration at
Mount Rainier National Park
3. Understanding shrinking glaciers at Olympic National Park
Combined, we need to raise just over $74,000 for these three
projects. Please give generously. 100% of your gifts to this
Fund-A-Need are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

throughout. While on vacation take an on-site cooking class and learn to prepare local
dishes! Enjoy the beautifully landscaped gardens, statuary, water features, and fish
ponds throughout the grounds all nestled in a lush, rural setting that looks toward a
mountain range and river valley, amongst unparalleled natural beauty.
Restrictions: Good for two years. Expires May 2018.

DESSERT DASH
For the dessert dash, guests seated at each table combine their
bids to claim one of the delicious desserts available this evening.
To get your chance at the most delectable, scrumptious dessert,
simply complete the dessert dash card on your table! The table
with the largest bid gets first chance at dashing to the dessert table
and picking the dessert of their choice! Be careful though—you’ll
need to bid high to be the first table called. And your runner? He
or she will need to be fast to get your favorite dessert because
the number of the next winning table will be called quickly after
yours—this is the DASH part of the Dessert Dash!

PARK PACKAGE: Limnology: The Study of the Priceless
Biological, Chemical, and Physical Features of
Lakes and Other Bodies of Fresh Water…Spend a Day
on Rainier’s Mowich Lake Monitoring Limnology
Join Mount Rainier National Park’s Rebecca Lofgren for a day exploring Mowich Lake.
Located in the northwest corner of the park, Mowich is one of several lakes Mount
Rainier studies as part of a long-term monitoring effort. Studies of Mowich go back to
the 1960s.
You and a friend will travel in a 12 foot row boat to the deepest spot on the lake. There
you will help park staff collect zooplankton and chlorophyll samples, measure water
clarity, collect and filter water samples, and use a multi-parameter meter to measure
water quality parameters. Learn the changes the lakes within the park go through
throughout the year.
Restrictions: This trip takes place in August of 2016. Access to Mowich Lake is a
short walk from the parking lot located at the end of the Mowich Lake Road. This is a
day-long outing, on a boat, on the water. You will be asked to assist with transferring
sampling gear and rowing to the sample location.
