Third Time’s A Charm! We’re back! And if you’re reading this, so are you – and we’re so glad you’re here. If it’s your first time, grab a ticket, silence your phone and butter your popcorn, because you’re in for a great time! In fact this year’s fest is going to be so good that we hope you are already planning your return visit in April 2017. This festival is one of the largest cultural events in our community’s growing arts and entertainment landscape and this community, itself, is the very reason we are here. The Ocala Film Foundation has inspired and mobilized civic leaders, citizens and business owners and we are so honored that the city we call home has joined us this year as our Presenting Sponsor – thank you City of Ocala! Ocala Film Foundation, Silver Springs International Film Festival and now, the Friends of the Fest are dedicated to leading our community in creative and cultural discovery through the medium of motion pictures. Together we discover and encourage independent artists worldwide and build bridges between artists and their audiences and launch the artists of tomorrow. The Festival is also an international cultural event that elevates awareness of Ocala/Marion County, Florida’s Silver Springs State Park and the area’s contributions to cinema, as well as the cultural landscape of Florida. We offer scholarships to area students interested in the media arts and provide class room grants for local media arts teachers. The Festival awards incentives to Florida filmmakers and encourages them to utilize the areas’ pristine natural resources and unique culture and character. We have come a long way in just 3 years - from a 3 day event to a spectacular week long festival celebrating independent cinema with filmmakers from around the world. Organizing a festival takes a village! We would like to thank the filmmakers who have shared their work, our dedicated and enthusiastic board of directors, corporate and community sponsors, local businesses, community leaders and our tireless and enthusiastic volunteers for their exemplary support and assistance. We couldn’t do it without all of you! We also thank you, our audience, for being here - enjoy the festival! Laurie W. SILVER SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL HISTORIC DOWNTOWN OCALA, MARION COUNTY, FLORIDA Page In the late 19th century, the park became a tourist destination for Northerners following the Civil War. Over the years, it changed hands and various operators introduced boat rides and built related attractions, of varying scientific and entertainment quality. It was first used as a location for a Hollywood film in 1916, but became popular with the series of Tarzan films in the 1930s and has seen more than a hundred productions use its crystal clear waters and spectacular settings. www.SilverSprings.com 46 Once referred to as "Hollywood East," Florida has been the location for countless films from the 1910s through to the modern era. Silver Springs quickly became a favorite backdrop for film, television and various video productions. Silver Springs is a group of artesian springs that feed into the Silver River in Marion County, Florida. It is the largest artesian spring in the world and Florida's oldest tourist attraction. In 1971 it was designated as a National Natural Landmark. Related amenities developed including its famed glass-bottom boat tours, with the first glass bottom boat launched in 1878. “See the world from the edge of your seat!” Get Closer to the Action The Brick City Center for the Arts (The Brick) is our Filmmaker Salon. Walk around the Downtown Historic District This area developed as a residential neighborhood between circa 1880 and 1930. The character and quality of the 172.5-acre residential district remains intact with restorations under the guidance of the Historic Ocala Preservation Society. 48 Stay the night – We have great host hotels within a short drive, or easy walking distance of downtown and all of the events associated with the SSIFF. “See the world from the edge of your seat!” Jordan Klein, Sr. – Bruce Mozert Florida Legacy Award Honoree 2016 Silver Springs International Film Festival “Jordan has filmed so many sharks... they make a week about him!” “This was the line I heard several times over,” says photographer, Bryan Soderlind, “from people describing pioneer underwater filmmaker Jordan Klein, Sr.” The joke is certainly fitting - at 90 years of age Klein has spent more time filming sharks and underwater, in general, than arguably anyone on this planet. His lifetime of dedication to underwater cinema has changed the way we see below the surface on the big screen today. Semi-retired, Klein spends the majority of his time at his home and office compound on Lake Weir in Summerfield, Florida. One early March day, I headed up for a visit and pay respects to the Oscar winner and find out more about his life. Born in 1925, Klein grew up on Miami Beach, FL. His love for being underwater was apparent early on, “I was only just a little shit-kicker, probably 11 or 12, but I wanted to figure out a way to stay underwater longer. Some friends and I figured out how to combine the old 5 gallon milk cans with a refrigerator compressor to make a working breathing apparatus. We also found out how to make masks by cutting a section of inner tube and then clamping a piece of glass into one end. For fins we took old tennis shoes and attached a piece of tire to each shoe for more push underwater.” Jordan’s savvy didn’t necessarily translate to the classroom, as a kid he was more interested in speed whether it was a boat, car, or plane. SILVER SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL HISTORIC DOWNTOWN OCALA, MARION COUNTY, FLORIDA Page Jordan was drafted by the Navy soon after and hoped to be a pilot but his color blindness kept him grounded and mainly working on ships. After his years of service, he returned to Miami where he worked as a car mechanic and went to school at Embry Riddle where he learned how to work on planes. With the money he had saved working on cars and planes he decided to follow his passion and start a dive shop. “I paid 5,000 for a piece of property on Biscayne Blvd. – my gosh what that piece of property must be worth now.” It was the second dive shop in Florida at the time, and “I remember people telling me I was crazy. I offered diving tours on my boat that quickly became popular because I was the only guy doing it. I took all kinds of stars out back then, William Randolph Hearst, Jackie Gleason, Gary Cooper etc. Most everyone wanted to spear dive, but when I brought along my cameras with my homemade underwater housings people started taking notice. People decided they’d rather shoot fish with a camera than a spear gun. I started selling camera housings to people who would come on the dive tours and then one day I got a call from Abercrombie & Fitch in New York. They were an upscale outdoor store at the time and one of their buyers had seen one of the housings I made and asked if he could place a big order for their New York store. Soon after a film company in Ft. Lauderdale, Ivan Tors Studio, commissioned me to make a water housing for one of their 35mm motion picture cameras and also build underwater props and sets. I was there only a short time before Ivan asked if I wanted to help film the underwater scenes for the TV show Flipper. That was a huge break. That kind of started it all.” 49 “I built a race car with some friends when I was really young and took it to south Florida. I registered for the race with the fake name, Bill Jordan, and even painted that name on the side of my car. I think I got nd 2 place in the first race and then crashed and totaled the car in the next race. I was 16 at the time. I remember a pivotal moment happening at that age. One day I heard a loud plane landing at the Miami municipal airport behind my house where I had started to take flying lessons. It was the Pan Am Airline’s DE-3 landing to refuel on its way to Cuba, and everyone was checking out the plane. I’ll never forget that day - it was a changing point in my life and I realized I wanted to be some type of engineer and also fly planes.” “See the world from the edge of your seat!” His love for underwater photography, specifically filming sharks, led him to create the company Mako. Mako built almost all the dive housings and underwater props used on motion pictures in the 1960′s, 70′s, and 80′s. Mako also co-invented the Cryo-Lung, the one-of-a-kind underwater liquid breathing apparatus. In 1959 Jordan designed the MakoShark Camera, the first underwater camera sold to the public. It’s simple but genius design made it cheap to manufacture and it sold over 55,000 copies at Rexall Drugstores nationwide. “Every person in my family was working on those cameras almost 24 hours a day, I had no idea how huge of a success that camera was going to be.” Jordan quickly became a must have on any underwater movie set. In the early 60′s after filming over 30 episodes of the TV show Flipper, he was hired on for what would be the biggest project of his lifetime, James Bond’s Thunderball. “I got an offer to build some underwater submersibles for some of the scenes in Thunderball, they were going to pay me $35,000 and I was beside myself. That was a whole lot of money back then. I hired another guy and we built all In one fin, Jordan’s day every day for a year, I slept at my desk almost every night. It wasn’t easy, signature grommet, and a I had to not only design sci-fi looking underwater vessels but they had to be shark bite in the other. functional. It seemed impossible, at times, but when we finished, the results were pretty impressive - it was a pretty slick deal.” Jordan also worked on the movie as a cameraman, but it was his title of Director of Underwater Engineering for Special Effects and Props that earned him an Academy Award. Jordan’s work can be seen in movies and TV shows such as Creature From The Black Lagoon, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Sea Hunt, The Aquarians, Flipper, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, Never Say Never Again, The Day of the Dolphin, Chips, Splash, Jaws, Cocoon, Miami Vice, The Abyss, China Moon, X-Files, Bermuda Triangle, and SeaQuest to name a few. At 90 years old, Jordan has never stopped working. He is currently dreaming up an airboat/front end loader concept that he can use to remove all the weeds in the lake behind his house. His son, Jordy Klein, carries on the cinematic tradition working on major motion pictures, as well; specializing in providing world class aerial footage. By Bryan Soderlind (www.journal.bryansoderlind) The Bruce Mozert Legacy Award. Bruce Mozert received the festival’s first Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2015 Festival. In the summer of 2015, prior to Mr. Mozert’s passing, the Ocala Film Foundation board voted, unanimously, to name an award for this prolific and respected, internationally acclaimed local artist. With this award we seek to honor those Floridians who have made important and lasting contributions to Film/Television production community. The SSIFF Award Statue was suggested by local artist Jon Fort, who submitted a sketch and an idea inspired by one of a group of prop statues set up on the bed of the nearby Silver Springs; for which the festival is named. SILVER SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL HISTORIC DOWNTOWN OCALA, MARION COUNTY, FLORIDA Page The statues were originally placed in the springs for an episode titled, The Seventh Captain, in the hit 1960’s TV series, I Spy, starring Robert Culp and Bill Cosby. The episode’s storyline is homage to the James Bond classic, Thunderball. The statues remain in place today and have become a favorite feature on the park’s famed glass-bottom boat tour. 50 Once the design was chosen, local artist Mark Hershberger of BJ Trophies joined the team to develop and create the final trophy. Each statue is handpoured and tinted and each base is custom built - so no two are alike!
