Joe… October 5, 2014 (part 3 of 7) Parish Pastoral Council Last week I presented the first task of a member of the Parish Pastoral Council is to pray. This week I would like to discuss the second task, to listen. Listening is intimately connected to prayer. In prayer we are called to listen to the voice of the Lord under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Listening to another is just like praying, so if you are listening to the Lord it will be easier to listen to others. Listening is also a difficult task. It requires that we still the inner conversation of our mind to pay attention to what another person is trying to communicate. The goal is to understand what is in the “heart” of another person. It requires us to assimilate the words we hear, the tone of the voice and the expressions of the face and body. It is constantly asking us, “What is this person trying to say to me?” It is the tasks of discovering what are the deep longings of another person. It takes great discipline to not think about your next question or the comment you want to make about what you just heard. In a sense it is assisting the other person to discover their own longing and the messages the Lord has spoken to them. It requires being comfortable with pauses and periods of silence, because in these periods of silence comes the clarity of the message. It also is a challenge to contain our own emotions as we react to the often clumsy ways another person is trying to find the best way to express their thoughts and feelings. They may say things to us that we consider absurd or hurtful. If we are paying attention, these awkward moments may reveal to us some very profound feelings and thoughts of the person. For most of us five minutes of intense listening is exhausting. Our mind begins to wander to other thoughts. This is why the practice of prayer is related to listening. The more we are able to pay attention to the Lord the more we are able to pay attention to another. A member of the Parish Pastoral Council is called to listen to others and so they must be dedicated to improving their listening skills. Prime Rib Dinner Fundraiser next weekend St. Justin Martyr Parish is holding a prime rib dinner fundraiser at the restaurant at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim on Sunday, Oct. 12th (previously scheduled for Oct. 11th) at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be $30 per person, or $40 per person which includes wine. Entertainment will be provided by Jane and Jim Rice. Checks are to be made out to St. Justin Martyr Church, and may be given to Hank Wesseln, Buck Weinfurter, or Deacon Ray Duthoy. Psalm -- The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel (Psalm 80). Second Reading -- God's peace will guard your hearts and minds (Philippians 4:6-9). Gospel -- The kingdom of God will be given to those who will produce its fruit (Matthew 21:33-43). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. In the Vineyard As usual, today's first and third scripture readings are obviously related, with the second continuing one of Paul's Letters--these days, the Letter to the Philippians. The vineyard stories from Isaiah and Matthew both talk about evildoers coming to a bad end. In Isaiah, it's the vineyard itself that produces "wild grapes" instead of the crop the owner dreamed of and worked for. So it will be "trampled" and "overgrown with thorns." In Matthew, those to whom the owner leased the vineyard destroy the dream. So the owner "will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants" (Matthew 21:41). Yes, if we reject divine love we come to a bad end. And with all this talk of the unfaithful being trampled and thrown out, it's consoling to hear Paul's message to the Philippians, who were by no means perfect. "Have no anxiety at all," Paul said. "Then the God of peace will be with you" (Philippians 4:6, 9). Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Treasures from our Tradition The sacrament of penance has a long and difficult history. The Church sometimes struggles with how best to be faithful to the image of an all-forgiving God. Once a very public rite with publicly visible participation on the part of the penitent, it became in time a very private matter. By the fourteenth century, when a prayer of absolution and a laying on of hands was still required in sacramental confession, theologians were saying that even that was too much liturgy. All that was required was confession itself, and the sacramental words Ego te absolvo, or "I absolve you." In 1614 the Council of Florence tried to flesh out this bare skeleton, requiring that if possible the priest should wear a stole, that the confession should be in church, and that there be questions about the person's state in life, occupation, and last confession. This is the first time the Church recommended that the penitent and priest be separated by a grill, thereby eliminating the ritual laying on of hands once so central to the sacrament, substituting the priest's raised right hand in blessing. This is the rite that remained in force until the sacrament became the subject of very stormy debates at the Second Vatican Council, leading to a major reform in 1974 that is still only partially received. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Pennies from Heaven collection today Today Sunday, October 5th, is our Diocese’s 20th annual Pennies from Heaven Campaign. Saint Justin Martyr Church was originally chosen to be the host church for this year's Rally and this would have been the first time to honor the Federation's invitation. Because of the renovation of our parish hall the event had to be moved to La Purisima Parish. We look forward to hosting it at St. Justin in the future and continue to support and participate in this year’s Rosary Rally. Many thanks to La Purisima Parish for hosting this year’s Rally, we look forward to joining you there. Join Fr. John Monestero at an Ecumenical Service for persecuted Christians in the Middle East. Nuestra mente comienza a distraerse.
