The Inter-University Online Consortium of Jesuit Higher Education in the Americas, is
intended to create the operational organizational structure and rules, and allow the
exchange of students through online courses, as well as programs and courses offered
through virtual platforms between AUSJAL universities and AJCU.
Virtual Dual Immersion-Telecollaboration occurs when two native speakers of different
languages work together in real time to help each other improve their communication and
intercultural proficiency by sharing linguistic competence and local/global issues.
Since February 2010 over 700 Javeriana students and 1200 Marquette students have
participated in the online language exchanges.
From 2007-02 to 2013-02 about 14,000 students of courses in English and Spanish
have gone through the project, 138 teachers from 22 universities in the United States
and Latin America have collaborated.
Ÿ The project started as a pilot in November of 2006 when Colleen Coffey of Marquette
University's Spanish Department tested a CALL-based global classroom approach to
language learning, together with the language faculty at the Universidad Javeriana in
Cali, Colombia, led by Profs. Jose Vicente Arizmendi and Oscar Mora.
Ÿ The project will be extended as part of the consortium formed in 2009 between the AJCU
and the Association of Latin American Universities Entrusted to the Society of Jesus
(AUSJAL) representing the 31 Jesuit universities in Latin America.

The Fordham College at Rose Hill Spring Break Community Health Program in Cali,
Colombia is a service abroad program designed for students in the sciences with an
interest in health issues in developing countries.
The governmental, societal, environmental, and cultural factors that influence
healthcare; and international health issues and programs are the focus of the
experience.
Students should expect to learn about overcoming challenges in healthcare from the
context of a developing country.
Students will attend presentations by doctors at Javeriana University (The Jesuit
University of Colombia) and students from the Javeriana School of Health.
They will also have clinical placements at private, public and rural hospitals and clinics
as well as service at Public Community (Ladera Community). Program participants will

CENTER FOR SCIENCIE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY
Objectives:
The approach to the study of leadership has been of interest to a group of professors at
Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali, initially the experience was focused on working on
the design of leadership experiences for university students. It subsequently moved
towards strengthening capacity of community leaders. In this context, Gonzaga
University's track record in leadership training, both undergraduate and graduate level is
well recognized.
Ÿ The process of cooperation on the topic with Gonzaga was initiated in 2008 with our faculty
professor Claudia Mora's visit to Gonzaga, in 2011, Prof. Lazarina Topuzova of GU took part
in the Spanish and Cultural immersion course at PUJ Cali. The coordination process took
two years, finally in May 2013, Prof. Topuzova offered the course, it was conducted
between May 19 and June 2, 2013, at the Instituto Mayor Campesino in Buga.
Ÿ The project revolved around two articulating questions: What alternatives could young
farmers find to stay ahead in the rural developmental processes? And, what alternatives
can be implemented to encourage the marketing of agro products

The group learns about the political, social, and economic issues between the U.S. and
Colombia.
The contact with Javeriana initiates only a better understanding between the two Jesuit
institutions but also of the meaning of the Jesuit network and networking.
It is a step to learn about the history of violence and resilience from the Colombian
perspective.
The group discovers that they are there to learn and not to teach or help.
Work together in the education of our students and reflect on the North - South relations
and the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to participate in building a better world
for all.
The program of social immersion Pedro Arrupe, University of San Francisco, as
university extension program of short duration, aims to provide an intercultural scenario
for student in service training, allowing them to participate, live and work at different
levels in underserved communities.
The program of social immersion in Colombia represents an interagency effort between
the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali and the University of San Francisco, which
emphasizes an (on-site) experience with a contextualized approach to the socio-political
reality in Colombia through a university/academic exchange.
Faculty lead immersion for nursing, public health, and premed students USF
The first group of 8 students and 1 faculty was held in May- June 2012, next March 2014 the
second group of 12 students and 1 faculty.
Objectives:
To look into the health situation and the structure of the general social security system of
Colombia
Ÿ Learn the appropriate vocabulary of their practice as nurses and health professionalism
normal everyday situations in clinical and community health areas.
Ÿ Interact with people from health institutions' selected practices.
Ÿ Have an experience with the "real situations" of nursing practice and public health,
through guided tours
Ÿ
The GSBI® Network is a growing group of Jesuit universities and other mission-aligned
institutions with a common focus on leveraging social enterprise for social benefit. Eight (8)
universities are participating from: India (4), Philippines (1), Spain (1), Mexico (1) and
Colombia (1).
Our university accepted the invitation to join GSBI global network on July 2011, at the
meeting of IAJBS - Peru, with contribution in the following aspects:
Ÿ
1. Social entrepreneurship initiatives focused on poverty alleviation conducted by
Javeriana Cali show evidence of our approach.
2. Strong university support for Social entrepreneurship initiatives focused on poverty
alleviation. Two working activities of Javeriana Cali show evidence of our approach
3. A clearly identified "champion" committed to impact and social entrepreneurship as a new
model of development.
4. Over the last 10 years PUJ Cali has developed Entrepreneurship education, Research
Group EIDOS, Support entrepreneurs with our in-campus incubator
Ÿ
Within the GSBI some outcomes for PUJ Cali:
Objectives
Frame the exercise of leadership and social responsibility in the light of a comprehensive
and humanistic view of human development.
Identify key concepts and experiences associated with the exercise of leadership and
social responsibility, on a personal, interpersonal and collective level.
Ÿ In concrete life situations, indicate values and standards of the professional activity from the
social commitment and citizenship perspective.
Ÿ Consider ways to address specific leadership building options, in order to think about and
practice ethical leadership consistent with a holistic, humanist concept and focused on the
common good.
Since 2012 PUJ Cali advanced in preparing academic cases of Social Entrepreneurs.
During 2013 the syllabus of our course of Social Entrepreneurship was adjusted to the
equivalent offered by Santa Clara University.
Ÿ As a team, an early version of the concept of Social Entrepreneurship was developed for
the network during the meeting in January 2013 at XLRI, Jamshedpur, India.
Additionally, the third academic social entrepreneurs cases was completed.
Ÿ A model accompanying social entrepreneurs initiatives was initiated with input from the
experiences of IBSS Santa Clara, USA, and other universities of the network, this model
will be presented in late 2014.
Ÿ In 2013, we received the visit of Mr. Nobuyuki Otsuka, IDB representative for Latin
America, to explore potential projects in Colombia in the future. This visit was suggested
by GSBI. The result of the visit was to establish the channel with the IDB to explore future
projects.
