February 2014 - Waverly School District 145
FEBRUARY 2014 Waverly Middle School, together with parents and our communities, will prepare each student to meet academic and social challenges by creating meaningful learning experiences in a safe, nurturing environment based on the needs of early adolescents. Notes from the Principal’s DeskGreetings Waverly Middle School Students, Parents, and Families. The second semester is moving quickly. I cannot believe that we are nearing the midway point of the third quarter. As we continue to focus on our current progress, we also begin to provide information relating to scheduling and registration. During the next couple months, we will work hard to keep students on track as well as prepare our kids to transition to, from, and within the middle school. Conferences/Registration Notes Middle school conferences will take plan on February 4th and 11th. Students were recently given a copy of the scheduled conference time to take home to parents. If you have questions about your conference time, please contact the grade level team. Our current eighth grade students will be visiting the Waverly High School on February 11th at 2:00 pm for an overview of the high school registration process. This will provide students an opportunity to learn more about high school course offerings and programs. There will be a separate orientation for both parents and students in the fall. The current sixth and seventh grade students will begin registering for next school year during the next couple months. In addition to registering for courses, our current 6th grade students will need to have a physical and copy of immunizations submitted to the nurse's office at the beginning of their seventh grade year. We strongly encourage that parents begin scheduling summer doctor appointments for immunizations and physicals. Please see the attached list of immunizations that are required for the beginning of seventh grade. Heads-up/testing time The dates for the Nebraska State Accountability (NeSA) tests will begin in April. Sixth through eighth grade students take the NeSA reading and math tests. Eighth grade students are also administered the state writing and science tests. Eighth graders completed the state writing test on 1 Tuesday, January 28th. We are scheduled to take the NeSA test on the following dates: April 1-4 6-8th: NeSA Reading April 8-11 6-8th: NeSA Math April 15-16 8th: NeSA Science As a district, we do not solely judge our students’ success or failures on their performances on these tests. These assessments are important, however, as we do utilize the information and data they provide within our continual school improvement process. With that said, we want to see our teachers and students working hard to have the students perform at their optimal level. Here are a few things that will help your child as we enter this period of assessments: Get plenty of rest, especially the night before an assessment Eat healthy. Foods full of empty calories do not help our bodies function at their peak performance level Be at school. Research is pretty conclusive that attendance is strongly associated with student achievement. Please try to schedule appointments around these testing weeks if possible. We know that this may be difficult but make up time is difficult to schedule within the state’s timeline. Thanks for helping your child succeed. -Mr. Ricenbaw 6th Grade Team Math: Classes will be testing over Chapter 3 during the first part of February, variable expressions and variable equations. We will then transition to Chapter 7, Ratios, Proportions, and Percents. Students will be using prior skills to set up ratios, using fractions, and finding percents of numbers and relating 50% to 1/2, percents to fractions. We will continue to prepare for our spring round of NeSA testing with various activities in Math classes. www.dist145schools.org Science: Students have concluded their studies over cell structure and the proper use of microscopes. Our next units will be over the skeletal, muscular and integumentary systems. Reading: We are using our new textbook in class and spending time completing our unit on poetry and then moving on to elements of story structure. Midquarter point goal for AR is February 6th. Geography: After spending some time making travel brochures about China and several other Asian countries, we will now be focusing on Monsoon Asia. This will include chapters 27, 28, and 32 in the textbook. English: We will have a simulation of the Nebraska State Writing on February 4th and 5th. Please continue to remind your student to practice for vocabulary and spelling tests. We are looking forward to visiting with all parents at conferences on February 4th and February 11th. We hope all parents make this a priority in their schedules and plan on attending. 7th Grade Team As is true for the rest of the middle school classes, the seventh grade just completed the State Writing Test. This test was just a “practice” round for the seventh graders, as the test results are not reported until eighth grade. This group, having taken the “mock” test the past two years, will be well prepared to perform on the State Writing Test next year. The focus of the second half of the month of February is the novel, Children of the River by Linda Crew. The novel centers around a young Cambodian refugee named Sundara, who flees to America with her family after the Viet Nam Conflict. As background for the novel, students will be introduced to various historical aspects of U.S. involvement in the Viet Nam conflict. The culminating activity for this unit of study is our annual multi-cultural day. In the morning all CORE activities will center around Asian culture, and in the afternoon the students will hear insights from a local Viet Nam veteran. Parent/teacher conferences are coming up. You should have received a post card with your conference information. Please notify us as soon as possible if you need to reschedule a conference time. The sooner we know, the more options we have to find a time that works for everyone involved. Remember, all students need to be present for conferences as we utilize student lead portfolios. 2 Parents, do you have facebook? The 7th grade team has a facebook page. Go “like” us at WMS 7th Grade. This is only a page, not a profile. If you “like” it, you will receive updates on assignments and tests, enrichment videos, and other updates. We will not be able to see your profile, though. 8th Grade Team American History – February brings a wealth of activities to American History. Students look at the history of our two party system by holding a debate between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. This will be followed by students becoming advisors to President Monroe regarding American foreign policy. Toward the end of February we look at what it meant to be an American in the 1800s. PTO Thanks to all the parents who helped chaperone the winter dance. It was a great success and the kids had a great time. We're still in need of volunteers to help with concessions for the girl's basketball games. Karla has sent out the dates that need to be filled. If you can help, contact Karla Nagengast at 402-560-2373. The dates for Parent Teacher Conferences will be February 4th & 11th. An email will be going out with more details for those of you who said you would be willing to make a dessert. Our next meeting will be held on Monday February 10, at 5:00 in the library. We have our January nominations of the school year for “Student of the Month”. Each month the teachers nominate 2 students to represent their respective grade levels as students who have demonstrated a strong work ethic in academics as well as displayed positive behavior and citizenship. The winners for January are: 6th Grade: Evan Riley Kennedi Claycomb 7th Grade: Val Gerlach Clayton Lowe 8th Grade: Parker Nagengast www.dist145schools.org Taylor Martin Calendar of Events No Name-Calling Week By Kamryn Pfenning Melissa Warner Girls Basketball Schedule 7th Grade 2/3 Plattsmouth @ Waverly 4:15 2/6 Waverly @ Blair 4:15 2/13 Waverly @ Nebraska City 4:15 2/17 Elkhorn Ridge @ Waverly 4:15 2/20 Waverly @ Elkhorn Valley View 4:15 2/24 Waverly@ Platteview 4:15 2/27 Norris @ Waverly 4:15 3/3 Waverly @ Wahoo 4:30 During the week of January 20, Waverly Middle School is celebrating kindness while working to create a safe school free of name-calling and bullying. No Name-Calling Week is a national program for 10 years that the Middle School is choosing to participate in. No Name-Calling Week means that any nicknames or rude comments to any individual will not be allowed. This will hopefully help to stop the amount of name-calling that is going on in our school and to make everyone aware of the issue. Each day from January 20-24 our students are supposed to wear a certain color to represent a feeling towards the way we should treat others. All the students who participated did a great job. This year’s winner is Elyssa Clatt! Way to go Elyssa!!! 3 www.dist145schools.org Student Drop-off, Pick-up and Parking 4 up a re a ea ar kup Pic Traffic and parking are a concern for every school when it comes to the safety of students arriving and departing to and from school. Students that attend WMS can ride a school bus from any of the other schools to and from school. This means that students can meet a bus at Hamlow or Waverly Intermediate School in the morning and ride it to the Middle School and can then take a bus after school from WMS to either one of these locations. Students being brought to school may be dropped off at the front of the building on the west side. Please do not park for extended periods of time in the turn around when dropping off, as this can and will backup traffic. The east side, or back of the building, is a designated drop-off and pick-up area for buses and delivery trucks only. Vehicles wanting to load or unload students will need to go to the west side of the building as they will not be permitted on the east side of the building or on the access road coming from 140th street. I cannot stress enough to not park on the north access road between the west and east parking lots. Additionally, to make our campus safe for students and patrons, and to assist in traffic flow, vehicles will not be allowed to park in the turn around at the front of the building for student pick-up until after 3:35 PM. Vehicles picking students up need to filter into the west parking lot or the parking stalls leading to the middle school. Thank you for your attention and support regarding parking and the loading and unloading of students. **Included is a map to help give you a visual of what we are asking.
