Prepare to be amazed …
Bremen is full of surprises. Did you know, for example, that it is the
tenth biggest city in Germany? Or that it is a major centre for space
travel and is home to one of Europe’s biggest urban development
projects? And that’s just for starters, keep reading to find out more …
charming
600 years of heritage
An architectural gem on Bremen’s market square and the city’s statue of liberty:
In 2004 the 600-year-old town hall with its magnificent Renaissance facade
was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status together with the Roland statue
that stands before it. They are an exceptional testimony to civic autonomy and
sovereignty.
Fairytale magic
Bremen’s donkey, dog, cat and rooster have captured the world’s heart. These
Brothers Grimm fairytale characters are recognised from Seattle to Shanghai.
This global appeal makes the Town Musicians a great advertisement for Bremen.
In Japan, an entire shopping street has even been named after them.
Dropping anchor
down by the harbour
The Weser is the lifeblood of Bremen. With its beer gardens, bars and restaurant
boats, the Schlachte riverside promenade is a lovely spot for a meal or a refreshing drink – a place to see and to be seen. In 1922, here at the old harbour,
F. W. Murnau shot scenes for his legendary film Nosferatu.
A city with a tradition
of philanthropy
For 140 years Bremen’s Bürgerpark has been funded solely by donations. Local
people are involved in more than 300 charitable foundations. Our Hanseatic city
also places great importance on traditions, whether it’s the ice wager in aid of
the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service, or the Schaffermahl banquet,
the world’s longest-running fraternal feast.

Hidden depths
Bremen – a driving force in space travel. Airbus Defence & Space, where
the upper stage of the Ariane rocket is made, is also where the European
contribution to the International Space Station (ISS), the Columbus module,
was assembled. There are projects in development at more than 140 companies
in this city of aerospace, including Galileo – the European satellite navigation
system by OHB.
Conducting research into weightlessness – without ever taking off from planet
Earth. Bremen’s Fallturm drop tower makes it possible. Scientists from all over
the world travel to Bremen to carry out anti-gravity experiments inside this
free-fall facility.
High above the clouds
Bremen Airport, which opened in 1913, had a paved runway before any other
airport in Germany. Now, an annual total of 2.6 million people fly for business
or for leisure between Bremen City Airport and nearly 50 destinations worldwide.
The journey between the international airport and the city centre takes less than
15 minutes by tram.
Across the Atlantic
Like Lindbergh in reverse: in 1928 a Junkers W33 aircraft named ‘Bremen’ became the first to cross the Atlantic from east to west. The plane took 36 hours to
complete its flight from Dublin to Greenly Island in Canada and is now on display
in Bremen. One year later, the SS Bremen received the Blue Riband for achieving
the fastest transatlantic crossing.
Brand capital
It’s a safe bet that inside every kitchen is a little piece of Bremen. After all,
Bremen is home to many major brands, including Café HAG, Kellogg’s,
Beck’s, Milka and Philadelphia. One million packs of cornflakes are produced
every day at Kellogg’s in Bremen. Lined up side by side from Bremen, they
would stretch almost as far as Cologne.
Hand-picked
Raise your glasses to Bremen’s Ratskeller, the world’s largest repository of
quality German wines, with around 1,200 different varieties. These include
the oldest German cask wine, which dates from 1653 and is part of the
town hall UNESCO World Heritage site.
Our black gold
The taste of Bremen
Every other cup of coffee consumed in Germany is made using beans that
have entered the country via Bremen. In 1673 Bremen became the first city
in Germany licensed to serve coffee to the public and, as a result, the site of
the first coffee house in the German-speaking lands. And let’s not forget –
decaffeinated coffee was the invention of local merchant Ludwig Roselius.
Curly kale with pinkel, knipp, klaben or kluten – sound appetising? The people
of Bremen certainly think so. Why not try a small taster portion to start with?
Simply ask for the Bremen tapas or the beer menu. While you’re at it, you can
even discover just what babbeler really are …

City of science
More than 12,000 people work at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen, the
second biggest in the world. Mercedes-Benz vehicles have been in production
here since 1978, including the C-Class and the SL and SLK model series. The
GLK off-road vehicle is made here too. Out on the plant’s off-road track, motor
enthusiasts can take an adventure-filled drive over ‘The Rock’, Bremen’s third
highest peak with its 70 per cent incline and 80 per cent downward slope.
Inside Bremen’s knowledge worlds, every visitor is an explorer. Whether trembling on the earthquake sofa at Universum or touring the world in 80 minutes
at the Ethnological Museum, there’s nothing dull about learning in Bremen.
What’s more, in 2005 Bremen became the first German city to be named
‘City of Science’.
Über-cool
Überseestadt
Key industries
in Bremen
A dockland renaissance: a short walk from the city centre lies the Überseestadt
district, with its variety theatre, museums, event venues, hotels, restaurants
and on-trend bars. This new riverside district boasts three square kilometres
of residences and businesses. By way of comparison, the city-state of Monaco
covers just two square kilometres.
Business by land, air or sea, Bremen is at home in many elements. The city’s
strong maritime trade and highly diversified logistics industry are testament
to its bond with the sea. And did you know that the longest private yacht in
the world, the Azzam, was built in Bremen’s Lürssen shipyard in 2013?
Concerts, gigs
and festivals
Old Masters
and Young Guns
Round and
round we go!
It’s all about the music: the Bremen Music Festival features world-class performers
and a programme that ranges from the traditional to the avant garde. Audiences
flock to hear the Bremen Philharmonic play, and the jazzahead festival brings the
world’s jazz scene to Bremen. The German Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra of
Bremen attracts global attention with its performances of the complete Beethoven
symphonies and appears at various Bremen events including the Summer in
Lesmona.
Bremen’s Kunsthalle art gallery mounts compelling exhibitions that feature inter
nationally acclaimed artists including van Gogh, Monet and, currently, Picasso.
It is a leading art gallery that is financed entirely by private patrons. Located on
the Teerhof peninsula in the middle of the Weser river, the Weserburg has made
an international name for itself as the first collectors’ museum for modern art in
Europe.
Cologne has its carnival, Munich has the Oktoberfest. In Bremen, the celebrations
go on all year round. The magic is in the mix: elite sporting action is combined
with a party atmosphere, for example, at the Samba carnival or at Bremen Sixdays,
Germany’s biggest indoor cycle race. The Freimarkt, Germany’s longest-running
fair, brings together four million visitors and a whole host of fairground rides.

Bremen al fresco
Summertime in Bremen means open-air festivals and ample opportunities to enjoy the
city’s outside space. Whether at the Breminale spectacular on the banks of the river,
at the street circus festival La Strada or at the Maritime Festival with its seaside singalongs, there’s no such thing as bad weather on the Weser – just the wrong clothes!

Meet the experts
The University of Bremen is one of Germany’s leading research universities,
excelling in the fields of marine science, material science, information technology and production technology. In 2012 it became a member of the excellence
initiative for cutting-edge research at universities. The city is also home to the
Bremen University of Applied Sciences and numerous other institutes such as
the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology. Researchers at the Center
for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM) explore the role of the oceans
in the Earth’s system.
Kick like a robot!
Can robots play football? Of course they can! Bremen are four-time world
champions. The team from the University of Bremen and the German Research
Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) regularly compete in the RoboCup.
The DFKI is a leading centre of excellence for international scientific research
and is currently the world’s biggest research facility for artificial intelligence.
Extraordinary
perspectives
A tablet computer in the operating theatre – researchers at the Fraunhofer
MEVIS Institute in Bremen have developed an innovative medical app that
assists surgeons during operations on the liver and reduces the risk of complications occurring during these intricate procedures. The Fraunhofer Institute
for Medical Image Computing MEVIS develops interactive assistance systems
for routine clinical use. Their work is centred on medical imaging data that
can be used in early detection, diagnosis, therapy support and follow-up.
Fully charged
In 2009 the Federal Ministry of Transport named the Bremen/Oldenburg
region one of eight model regions for electromobility. Offering pedelec rental,
e-mobility car sharing schemes and sightseeing tours in an electric minibus,
the city of Bremen is fully charged and leading the way.

MESSE BREMEN I Bremen Conference Centre I ÖVB-Arena
ÖVB-Arena – Entertainment made in Bremen
Bremen’s civic hall, the ÖVB-Arena, enjoys legendary status. For nearly 50 years it has
been wowing everyone: the crowds, the stars, the people behind the scenes. The venue
has always moved with the times, meeting new requirements, setting the standards, and
writing many chapters in the history of concerts, sporting events and shows. The ÖVBArena is a home-from-home to global stars and to athletes competing in world, European
and domestic championships.
The ÖVB-Arena has also raised the bar when it comes to facilities, boasting spacious
cloakrooms and toilets, wide staircases, escalators up to the top floor, disabled-friendly
lifts and brightly lit corridors.
In conjunction with the state-of-the-art exhibition halls and the integrated conference
centre, the arena has the optimum facilities for trade fairs, conferences, high-profile
presentations, party conferences and assemblies.

history, culture and economy, and discover the architecture of the
city’s vibrant quarters, including the modern Überseestadt in the old
docklands – all from the comfort and convenience of a coach.
At the ZARM Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity,
you will learn all there is to know about weightlessness. The tour takes
you to the integration hall, the nerve centre of the research laboratory.
Every experimental capsule that is tested in Bremen’s drop tower is assembled and prepared for its zero-gravity flight here. The structure of
the drop tower and the way it works are explained in detail inside the
hall, and a series of small experiments shed light on the phenomenon
of weightlessness.

We guide you through the picture-postcard Schnoor quarter, Bremen’s
oldest surviving district. Its rambling lanes, where fishermen, artisans
and sailors once lived, are now home to delightful cafés, inns and taverns, top-notch restaurants and all manner of handicrafts. As darkness
descends, the nightwatchman Ulf guides you around the Schnoor,
revealing the district’s turbulent past.
On this culinary tour, there are not only ‘historical delicacies’ to discover,
but also some sweet and savoury local specialities to sample in a handpicked selection of the city’s eateries. Find out more about Bremen’s
finest fare and other north German traditions.

As close to being in orbit as your average person will get. Bremen is

simulation and diagnosis room, where
engineers make contact with the ISS.
We take you to the town hall (UNESCO World Heritage) and down
