Delphi Inside Compressors TECHNICAL BULLETIN Technical Information – What does Delphi Inside consist of? The job of a compresser The Compressor is commonly referred to as the heart of the system. It is a belt-driven pump (unless the car is a hybrid or electric vehicle) and is responsible for compressing and transferring the refrigerant gas. IT MUST NOT TRY TO COMPRESS LIQUID. If it does, it will lock, and fail. The air conditioning system is split into two areas: high-pressure and low-pressure. These can be broadly defined as discharge and suction. The intake or suction side of the compressor draws in refrigerant gas from the low pressure side, and the discharge side pushes out high pressure gas to the condenser. The main type of compressor is a displacement (piston) type compressor. This will either be a Fixed Displacement or Variable Displacement (often referred to as CVC). Fixed Displacement Fixed displacement compressors have a swash plate which is set at a fixed angle. This means that whenever the compressor is turning, the pistons are always moving through the same travel, compressing the gas. The only variables therefore are compressor speed and quantity of refrigerant in the system. Fixed displacement compressors have a clutch which turns it on and off. Variable Displacement CVC) Variable displacement compressors have a swash plate which is held at an angle with two springs. These will react to pressure, and therefore the swash plate angle can be adjusted. The actuator (by which you can identify this as a variable compressor) controls the pressure to the swash plate. This means that there is a variable output for this compressor. It is so effective that in some cases there is no clutch fitted to these and they spin continuously, varying the refrigerant compression according to demand. The variables therefore are compressor speed, quantity of refrigerant in the system and swash angle To talk with a technical expert on this subject, call 00442078586890 or email dpss.helpline@delphi.com Delphi Inside Compressors TECHNICAL BULLETIN Technical Information – What does Delphi Inside consist of? Delphi has proven high quality OE technology in compressors. This has been made available to the aftermarket. The CVC technology has been put into the shells which fit aftermarket applications. So what are the features of the CVC compressor that make them so good even compared with most OE manufacturers? The CVC Pistons The pictures on the right below show an OE compressor with the pistons still inside and then the pistons removed. This is a typical set up and uses pistons fixed to the swash plate. The pictures on the left show a Delphi Inside CVC. Notice the very light pistons which float (are not fixed) on the swash plate>this reduces weight, friction and pumping losses allowing the compressor to match the output of the comparison with less emissions, less heat and more efficiency. Note these two compressors are for the same application. To talk with a technical expert on this subject, call 00442078586890 or email dpss.helpline@delphi.com
