Civil War Patriotic Tokens
31 - 64/362 a R4 Raw VF+ Weak but stronger than normal date. 1863 Indian Head Not One Cent signed JGW. From the Steve Tanenbaum and Robert
Williams collections. (75-100)
32 - 70/452 a R9 Raw MS63 Trace Red. 1863 Indian Head with 10 inside a ring of 24 stars. Exceedingly rare reverse die, only the second example we
have seen offered in fifteen years of any variety. We sold a nice Uncirculated example of 71/452 i in our July 2000 sale for $2,530. From the Steve
Tanenbaum, Joe Kuehnert, Jon Harris and George Fuld collections. (3000-4000)
33 - 73/ 74 a R8 Raw EF Details With 3 removed from reverse date. Very rare 1863 Indian Head doubleheader. Despite the rarity rating this is the first
example we have seen offered publicly. Exceedingly rare reverse die only available in the Patriotic series in this die combination. (500-750)
34 - 73/84 a R7 Raw AU+ 1863 Indian Heads. Very scarce double header. This is the current Fuld plate token for very scarce die 84 with all stars no
date. A FINE+ sold for $190 in our October 2002 auction. From the Steve Tanenbaum and Jon Harris collections earlier from Joe Kuehnert. (500-750)
35 - 77/331 a R4 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red mostly on the reverse with nice toning and luster. 1863 Indian Head Army & Navy. From the Steve
Tanenbaum collection earlier from Gary Pipher May 1974. (200-300)
36 - 78/330 a R4 Raw AU+ Trace Red. 1863 Indian Head Army & Navy. Two scarce dies. From the Wayne Stafford collection earlier Rich Hartzog's
June 1978 sale. (100-150)
37 - 82/82 a R8 NGC MS65 BN Trace Red more so on the normally struck side. 1863 Indian Head full brockage mint error. These dramatic errors are
created when a struck token sticks to the die and fails to eject. A subsequent token such as this is then struck with one normal die and an incused image
from the previously struck token. If the first token stays stuck each subsequent strike's incused side is less distinct, an exaggerated example is 107/107
that can come quite blurry. This is a nice sharp early strike. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection earlier from Lawrence Fischman August 1980.
(1500-2000)
38 - 85/431 a R8 Raw UNC Details Tiny verdigris spots on reverse. 1863 Indian Head with Value Me As You Pleas spelling error. A VF sold for
$577.50 in our March 2010 sale. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection earlier from PCAC's June 1980 sale. (750-1000)
39 - 88/361 a R3 NGC MS63 RB Trace Red with attractive toning and luster. Very late obverse die state as usual with much weakness particularly the
date. Reverse die is clashed from an earlier die combination. A similar example sold for $77 in our September 2010 auction. 1863 Not One Cent. Two
scarce dies that only come in this combination and unfortunately this die state. (100-150)
40 - 91/432 j R8 NGC AU53 Well struck with nice color. 1863 Indian Head No Compromise With Traitors struck in German Silver. Just the seventh
example we have recorded all AU and better. This piece, usually thought of as a collector strike, did see some light circulation. (150-200)
41 - 92/199 a R3 Raw MS63 10% Red all on reverse. Strike a bit weak as always. 1863 Indian Head United States Medal. Rarely seen above EF. From
the Steve Tanenbaum and Cindy Wibker collections. (100-150)
42 - 93/362 a R2 Raw EF+ Surprisingly well struck for the variety on a seemingly larger and thicker than normal planchet. Date is full but still slightly
weak while the reverse is strong. 1863 Indian Head Not One Cent signed H on the obverse for die sinker Charles D. Horter and signed on the reverse
JGW thought to be engraver James Wilson or Horter neighbor and book seller John G. Wells. It is fairly unusual to have the combination of two
differently signed dies. From the Ed Rogalski collection. (50-75)
43 - 96/116 b R8 Raw UNC Details With many hairline scratches most noticeable on the reverse. Obverse strike is a bit weak as usual with two letters
of headband missing. 1864 Indian Head signed Key Phila with George Washington reverse struck in Brass. We sold a low grade Uncirculated with a
slightly weak headband for $594 in our March 2002 auction. From the Ed Rogalski collection. (400-500)
44 - 97/389 a R2 Raw AU+ Trace Red and well struck for variety. Millions For Contractors Fort Lafayette Not One Cent For The Widows. (75-100)
45 - 98/291 a R5 Raw MS63 10% Red well struck for variety with reverse die clashed. 1863 Union and Liberty Indian Head One Country. (150-200)
46 - 104/521 a R9 Raw EF+ Details Well struck for variety with a few light stains. Reverse die cud as usual with some associated weakness in the
opposite obverse fields. Indian Head Copper Mine Token struck by A. W. Escherich of Chicago Illinois. Rare variety with rare reverse die though
overrated at R9. One of the most detailed examples we have seen offered. A weakly struck EF sold for $550 in our June 2005 sale, while a well struck
and likely finest known AU+ brought $1,855 in our July 2012 sale. From the Ed Rogalski collection. (500-750)
47 - 106/0 a Unlisted Raw VG Struck on a large 28mm 6.1 gram planchet of another token or coin. There are still a few letters and parts of design
visible but not enough for an identification. The edge has fairly heavy widely spaced vertical reeding. George Washington obverse die signed L.R. for die
sinker Robert Lovett. Unique and unlisted. Likely some sort of die trial that then spent considerable time in circulation or as a pocket piece. From the
Dave Bowers collection earlier from Walt Korzick. (1000-1500)
48 - 111/271 a R3 Raw MS62 40% Red struck 15% off center. Late rusted die state with typical weakness. 1863 George Washington Union For Ever.
(100-150)
49 - 113/114A a R8 NGC MS65 BN Pater Patrie George Washington doubleheader struck in Copper. Rare dies, we sold a raw MS64 40% Red and
Proof Like for $1,700 in our February 2014 auction. NGC holder labeled as Baker-95A another designation in the Field of Washingtonia. (1000-1500)
50 - 113/114A b R9 Raw UNC Details Trace Bright with some small stains. Pater Patrie George Washington doubleheader struck in Brass. Rare dies,
rarer in Brass than Copper. We sold an AU Copper example in our December 2010 auction that realized $475. From the Ed Rogalski collection.
(400-500)
51 - 115/530 g R7 Raw EF Details Small obverse rim notch. This example still retains 80% or more of its original Copper plating. George Washington
Don't Tread On Me reverse die with oddly coiled snake. Struck in Lead with Copper plating as usually seen on pieces above VF. This piece along with
some related tokens were delisted in the fifth edition Patriotic book because it occurs only in electrotype plated lead. We did not agree with that decision
and feel this is the most legitimate use of die 115. Most 115 tokens and 115A for that matter were made to sell to collectors and were never intended to
circulate. This example and 115A/530, were likely made by a different die sinker using the Lovett obverse as a pattern (similar to Higgins of Indiana
Primitive fame). They did circulate and both come heavily worn and were represented in the "Found In Wall" contemporary hoard of Civil War tokens
dispersed by Steve Tanenbaum a number of years ago. They were all made in Lead and likely all Copper plated to facilitate acceptance and circulation;
they could even be thought of as contemporary counterfeits. In fact it has already been decided to include these tokens again in the new sixth edition that
is currently being planned. We sold an EF with nearly full plating but small areas of pitting on both sides for $440 in our May 2001 sale. (400-500)
52 - 117/420 a R1 Raw AU+ Trace Red mainly on the reverse. Struck with usual obverse die cud, though this one illustrates an interesting transition
point as the cud is about to become even larger. 1863 George Washington Exchange. (50-75)

Civil War Patriotic Tokens
53 - 118/419 a R5 Raw MS64 20% Red mostly on the obverse. 1863 George Washington Peace For Ever with hands shaking labeled North and South
on shirt cuffs. Very scarce reverse die, particularly this nice. (150-200)
54 - 120/256 a R9 Raw EF But weakly struck with some planchet flaws. 1863 George Washington Horrors of War Blessings of Peace. Rare die
combination, just the third we have recorded. From the Ed Rogalski collection. (200-300)
55 - 121/0 e Unlisted Raw EF+ 20% Bright on the obverse. The blank reverse is slightly rough as made. George Washington with blank reverse struck
in White Metal. Very rare obverse die usually only available on the 121/531 die combination. While listed as Unique R10 in both Brass and Silver, this
variety is Unlisted in this composition and likely Unique also. We sold a MS62 example of 121/531 a with indistinct reverse due to multiple strikes in our
July 2007 sale that realized $2,200. From the Henry South collection. (1000-1500)
56 - 124/294 a R7 Raw EF+ Abraham Lincoln President 1864 Freedom. Very scarce obverse die many times rarer than the 125's. An AU sold for $410
in our February 2014 sale. From the Ed Rogalski collection. (400-500)
57 - 125/417 a R9 Raw UNC Details Reverse clean with many verdigris stains. 1864 Abraham Lincoln with America reverse in Copper. Very rare
variety, the third we have seen offered. We sold a MS62 example of the R8 125/417 j variety for $550 in our July 2009 sale. DeWitt AL 1864-51 From
the Ed Rogalski collection. (300-400)
58 - 127/177 ao R10 Raw UNC Details But struck on a porous planchet. Struck over Patriotic Civil War token 162/338. Lincoln 1864 First In War First
In Peace with George Washington on horseback. Very rare Lincoln die combination in Copper, but Unique over another token. We have records of only
three examples of this die combination and composition, all lower grade or with problems. A slightly porous AU brought $451 in our July 2006 auction.
Perhaps all could have been struck over 162/338 which itself is notorious for being struck on porous planchet. Possibly this is the only example where the
undertype is visible. Regardless an important and interesting token. From the Dave Bowers and Mark Glazer collections. (750-1000)
059
061
062
59 - 127/252 a R9 NGC MS65 BN Trace Red with some attractive toning. Rare Abraham Lincoln / Masonic die combination struck in Copper. A NGC
MS63 BN brought $1,540.40 in our December 2008 sale. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection earlier from Harmer Rooke February 1981. (2000-3000)
60 - 128/289 b R3 Raw AU 10% Bright. Struck from clashed dies as usual. Lincoln and Union 1864 struck in Brass. (100-150)
61 - 129/349 a R9 Raw MS64 Or a bit better with 10% Red and nearly Proof Like surfaces. A very unusual token that appears to have been struck over
another token or trial piece with a grouping of five P's visible upright and inverted on the Lincoln side. Rare Lincoln struck in Copper with 1864 date
and Flags and Cannons reverse, one of just five examples of this variety we have recorded. An example in MS63 with 40% Red sold for $990 in our July
2009 auction. (1000-1500)
62 - 134/184 a R9 NGC MS64 RB 40% Red. Two very rare and popular dies Lincoln Redeemed and Hunting Dogs struck in Copper. This is the only
example in our data base. Ed Rosen who bought the George Fuld collection of Rhode Island was primarily a Store Card collector. When he discovered
that a number of the pieces he received had been reclassified as Patriotic tokens he thought he had been taken. Fortunately, Steve Tanenbaum came to the
rescue purchasing all the unwanted tokens at a considerable premium over what Ed had paid George. In the following years Ed was able to greatly
enhance his Store Card collection from this windfall. From the Steve Tanenbaum, Ed Rosen and George Fuld collections. (8000-12000)
63 - 135/199 d R9 Raw MS62 20% Bright struck slightly off center on a larger than normal 20mm planchet. Bisecting obverse die crack. Andrew
Jackson For Our Country A Common Cause 1863 United States Medal struck in Brass. We sold a similar example also off center on a 20mm planchet

67 - 142/347 a R8 Raw MS62 Nearly Proof Like. George McClellan struck in Copper. DeWitt GMcC 1864-38 (300-400)
68 - 143/261 a R1 Raw MS63 40% Red and very well struck. This Medal of G. B. McClellan Price One Cent. (100-150)
69 - 143/261 a R1 Raw AU Later die state with obverse rim cuds as often seen. This Medal of G. B. McClellan Price One Cent. From our October 1998
sale. (50-75)
70 - 154/218 a R5 Raw AU Stephen Douglas with Naked Amazon reverse. An EF realized $140 in our February 2014 auction. From the Wayne

75 - 168/168 a R9 Raw AU Cannon and cannon balls 1863 full brockage mint error. A brockage is created when a struck token adheres to a die and in
effect becomes a die itself. The next blank planchet struck receives an incused image of the stuck token. The first few tokens struck in that manner will
receive a crisp sharp strike as in this example. When the token creating the brockage remains stuck for a number of strikes its image will become weaker
and more spread out with each strike. A MS62 realized $1,500 in our July 2014 auction. (1000-1500)
76 - 169/213 a R2 NGC AU58 BN Popular Peace Maker cannon 1863. (100-150)
77 - 172/429 a R5 Raw EF+ Military Necessity with crossed canons. From the Ed Rogalski collection. (150-200)
78 - 175/403 a R4 Raw MS62 Trace Red all on reverse with a tiny and larger planchet clip. Complete but very weak date as usual. 1863 First In War

Baxter and wore the unusual Zouave style uniforms with short jackets, baggy trousers and ornamental headgear. Formerly NL H-5B (1000-1500)
120 - UI-G-5B R9 Raw EF Details With a number of marks on each side. R. R. 2V. Good For 5 Cents signed Koehler struck in Copper 22mm. This
type of Koehler reverse is used on many Civil War Sutler tokens. It has been suggested that this was issued for 2nd Regiment Volunteers of Tennessee

no reason to believe this is Confederate as has been stated elsewhere. We sold an EF example in our July 2014 sale for $900. A 10 Cent example from
the John Ford collection in similar condition brought $2,820 in August 2013. A 25 Cent piece also exists as well as varieties of the 10 and 25 Cent piece

Cent variety with very rare 1092A reverse die. One of just two examples we have recorded. This is the current Fuld Plate for the obverse die. From the
Steve Tanenbaum collection earlier from us April 2000. (1000-1500)
170 - MA115Cc-2e R6 Raw FINE Details With tiny reverse rim nick. Hess & Speidel Apollo Gardens Good For 6 Cents with Apollo personified on

C. F. Tuttle No. 130 Washington St. Boston. This is the newly listed, larger 27mm and rarer variety with George Washington reverse struck in White
Metal. The die was made with Pay At The Counter with a space left to counterstamp a customer number. Its rarity can be attested to by the fact that no
examples could be found in time to be pictured in the new Store Card book. (200-300)
172 - MA200A-2a R4 Raw VF+ Dunn & Co. Oyster House, Charlestown Massachusetts. Current research indicates that Dunn was actually from

173 - MA260A-2b R9 Raw MS63 30% Bright mostly on the reverse. E. P. Francis City Hotel Billiard Room, Fall River Massachusetts struck in Brass.
This very rare variety is the first we have seen offered. Formerly listed as a separate merchant as RI700B-1b, this is the designation in the new Civil War
Store Card book because it combines the reverse of the E. P. Francis -1a with a reverse die 1374 formally thought of as an exclusively Rhode Island die.
A MS64 example of the equally rare -2d brought $804 in our December 2012 auction. From the Ed Rosen and George Fuld collections. (750-1000)

179 - MI175A-1a R9 Raw VF+ Congdon Brothers, Chelsea Michigan. The only use of extremely rare reverse die 1183A. This die was not pictured in
Fuld's Second Edition further attesting to its great rarity. Serving as a quick diagnostic point as well as an explanation of its rarity is a die crack
extending from the eagles head to the rim through the fifth star that is seen on all examples known. This is one of only four examples we have seen
offered. From the Henry South and Dale Cade collections, earlier from our April 2000 auction where it realized $1,045. (1000-1500)

350 - WI510 Q-1a R7 Raw VF Details But covered with a fairly thick layer of dark residue. It is brown underneath including the tops of letters and
designs resulting in nice detail. T. W. Hart Supt. M.W.M. Plank Road Company. At one time there was talk of moving this token to Wauwatosa creating
a new Wisconsin town for Civil War tokens. Ray Callan's research published in The Civil War Token Journal showed that the Madison, Watertown &
Milwaukee Plank Road Company had its office in Milwaukee at the corner of Main and Mason. Although Mr. Hart was from Wauwatosa, the President,
Secretary and Treasurer of the company were all Milwaukee businessmen while he was Superintendent. An EF with a short scratch and light hairlines
realized $1,343.10 in our March 2008 auction. (750-1000)

with the portrait of the proprietor signed Marr. This was the Fuld Plate token in the second edition for the -3a variety called R10 Unique as double struck
brockage. In the new Store Card book it has been combined with -2a a more traditional brockage. Unique none the less and quite a special token. From
the Steve Tanenbaum, Bob Kraft, Rich Hartzog, Doug Watson and George Fuld collections. (1500-2000)
352 - WI510 X-2a R6 Raw EF Tiny clip. Louis Kurz Pictorial Lithographer, Milwaukee Wisconsin. With Naked Amazon reverse die 1220 signed

From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (300-400)
354 - WI510AD-1a R4 NGC MS66 BN 20% Red. Mossin & Marr Engraver, Milwaukee with naked Amazon reverse die 1220. The maker of many
Wisconsin Civil War tokens. A raw MS64 of similar redness brought $950 in our December 2012 auction in very spirited bidding. (750-1000)
355 - WI510AP-6a1 R9 Raw VF+ H. Upmeyer Jeweler, Milwaukee with very rare S.A.D. (Stephen A. Douglas) reverse die 1156. Somewhat
overrated and we have yet to personally examine the R8 Plain Edge variety perhaps the rarities should be reversed. A NGS XF45 sold for $551 in our
February 2014 auction. From the Henry South collection earlier from our own August 1997 sale where it realized $316.80. (500-750)

Lead. Known and considered a Civil War token for quite some time. Formerly called Patriotic 284A/463 it is now thought to be a Store Card. The issuer
has yet to be discovered making for an excellent research opportunity. Philadelphia is likely a good starting point due to the similarity of this piece’s
reverse to the 1182 reverse of Philadelphia die sinker Robert Lovett Jr.. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection earlier from Doc Carberry in 1989.
(300-400)
366 - LU H-1g R9 Raw VG/AG H. H. Union 1861 with George Washington reverse die 1140A struck in Lead. Known and considered a Civil War
token for quite some time. Formerly called Patriotic 115/466 it is now thought to be a Store Card. The issuer has yet to be discovered making for another
research opportunity. Philadelphia is likely a good starting point due to the similarity of this piece’s reverse to a die by Philadelphia die sinker Robert
Lovett Jr., though in this instance it was probably used as a model or mold by a different maker as in Patriotic 115/530. From the Henry South collection
earlier from Paul Koppenhaver March 1987. (300-400)
367 - LU S-1a R9 Raw MS62 Planchet is a bit rough. Town Branch Store Redeemable in Goods 1864 Indian Head. Long thought to be from East
Saginaw Michigan as MI280F-1a and now in limbo. Lexington Kentucky has been suggested in part due to the similarity of the following unlisted piece
to Keiningham variety -2b which is also 22mm with 10 Cents reverse that is quite distinctive. From the Henry South collection earlier from Steve
Tanenbaum December 1989. (300-400)
368 - LU S-7b Unlisted Raw EF Tiny planchet crack. Town Branch Store Redeemable in Goods 25 Cents struck in Brass with a Reeded edge. This
merchant was long thought to be from East Saginaw Michigan and now in limbo. Lexington Kentucky has been suggested in part due to the similarity of
this piece with the distinctive -2b variety of J. L. Keiningham of that city. From the Henry South collection earlier from Steve Tanenbaum December
1989. (500-750)
369 - LU U-1b R9 NGC MS61 10% Bright. Wood & Harrison Good For 10 Cents, struck in Brass on a thin Sutler style planchet with John Stanton
reverse. Very rare merchant, one of just two we have seen offered. Long listed under Cincinnati Ohio as OH165GQ-1b but no business of this name
could be found. It has a strong resemblance to a Sutler's token but likewise, no Sutler partnership could be found with this name. A wonderful research
opportunity. From the Henry South collection earlier from our April 1999 sale where it brought $1,897.50 while still considered a Cincinnati token
(1000-1500)
370 - LU V-1g Unlisted Raw VF Details With some light marks and 40% or more original Copper plating. Day's New Card with Time is Money
Exigency 1863 reverse struck in Copper plated Lead. Known and considered a Civil War token for quite some time. Formerly called Patriotic 187/476 g
it is now thought to be a Store Card though omitted from the new Third Edition. Likely the product of the maker of contemporary counterfeit 187/214, in
this case making a crude store card with a backwards D in Card. We sold a similar example in our December 2000 as SNL 12g that realized $475.77.
From the Henry South collection earlier from PCAC's June 1988 sale. (300-400)
371 - NC LU-A Raw EF+ M. S. C. with Mossin & Marr style eagle on the reverse and consequently assumed to be from Milwaukee but likely not
struck until well after the War. This piece is Brass as we believe all were, though listed as Copper in the past. (50-75)
372 - NC OH-C-10a Raw EF Central National Home For D. V. S. Good For 10 Cents At Store. Popular, though post-War, Disabled Veteran Soldiers
token. A VF brought $49.50 in our July 2000 auction. Formerly PA750G-2a and NC-40a and given a R8 rarity rating. Cunningham PA110b (75-100)
373 - NC OH-C-10b Raw VF Central National Home For D. V. S. Good For 10 Cents At Store. This piece is Octagonal and is signed Jas. Murdock Jr.
165 Race St. Cin O. unlike the prior two piece which are round and unsigned. Popular, though post-War, Disabled Veteran Soldiers token. Cunningham
PA110d (50-75)
374 - NC OH-C-5 Raw EF Central National Home For D. V. S. Good For 5 Cents At Store. Popular, though post-War, Disabled Veteran Soldiers

375 - D. R. BARTON 1832 ROCHESTER NY in a prepared circular punch on the obverse of an 1862 Indian Head Cent. Raw VF Coin GOOD with
reverse dents. David R. Barton was a prolific maker of edge tools who's company was founded in 1832. This mark was apparently used in the 1849-1880
time period. (150-200)
376 - I. BISBEE three times on the obverse and once on the reverse of a Hard Times Token HT-181. EF Token VF. Ira Bisbee was a die sinker located
in Cincinnati Ohio. The family business was founded in 1835 by Ziba Bisbee. As an interesting tie in for Civil War token collections, John Stanton began
work for Ira Bisbee in 1852 at the age of 23, just one year after he moved to Cincinnati. (300-400)
377 - J. A. J. B. twice in an oval bordered incused punch on the obverse of an 1805 Large Cent. VF+ Coin GOOD. An interesting and unusual punch,
perhaps even identifiable if it was issued by someone with two middle names. From the Russ Rulau collection. (25-50)
378 - P. APPLE / (Eagle) / PHILa on the obverse of an 1818 Large Cent. Raw VF+ Coin AG. Rulau states that Phillip Apple was one of America's best
known early coppersmiths who was active from 1806 to 1839. A very impressive example that was chosen as the plate specimen by Brunk and Rulau.
Rulau Early PA 19A From the Dave Bowers reference set earlier from Coin Galleries November 1989. (500-750)
379 - P.E.BALLOU PHRENOLOGIST in a circular punch on reverse of an 1846 Large Cent. Raw EF Coin VF. Issued by Perry Eugene Ballou of
Blendon Michigan during the 1870's. Phrenology is the study of the effect of the shape of a persons head on their behavior. We sold an example on a
1871 Two Cent Piece in our April 1996 sale for $242. (500-750)
380 - P.E.BALLOU PHRENOLOGIST in a circular punch on reverse of an 1847 Large Cent. Raw EF Coin VF. Issued by Perry Eugene Ballou of
Blendon Michigan during the 1870's. Phrenology is the study of the effect of the shape of a person’s head on their behavior. We sold an example on a
1871 Two Cent Piece in our April 1996 sale for $242. From the Dave Bowers reference set. (500-750)
381 - T. BASCOM. on the obverse of an 1802 Large Cent. EF Coin GOOD+ with some light reverse scratches. A maverick with a number of known
counterstamps. This date is unlisted and the earliest while 1839 is the latest date example. (25-50)
382 - W. COLLINS three times, once in raised letter and twice incused, plus N-YORK twice incused on the other side of what appears to be a worn,
smooth Large Cent 27.8mm 11.6 grams. Raw VF Coin worn smooth. Rulau attributes this to New York silversmith William Collins who was active in
the late 1820's to early 1830's. Apparently unique as this would appear the be the Tanenbaum specimen that Rulau refers to though not pictured and not
consigned as such. Rulau Early NY 165 (300-400)
383 - DEVINS / & / BOLTON / --- / MONTREAL on the obverse of a (1787) Connecticut Copper. Raw EF Coin Attractive AG with some roughness
opposite stamp. Very rarely seen undertype of this popular counterstamp. From the Dave Bowers reference set. (75-100)
384 - DEVINS / & / BOLTON / --- / MONTREAL on the obverse of an 1828 Large Cent. Raw VG Coin G/AG with punch mark, strike of stamp
uneven with DEVIN missing. From the Dave Bowers reference set. (25-50)
385 - DEVINS / & / BOLTON / --- / MONTREAL on the obverse of an 1848 Large Cent. Raw EF Coin FINE+. From the Dave Bowers reference set.
(50-75)
386 - DOWNES & BAKEWELL / CAST STEEL on both sides of an 1830's style Large Cent. FINE Coin FAIR. A Doggett's New York City
Directory Supplement for 1845 listed Downes & Bakewell as Machinists at 104 Elm and a similar stamp is known on a backsaw. (150-200)
387 - A. C. GREEN on both sides of R. G. Tyler Detroit Michigan Civil War token. Raw EF Coin VG but flattened. Counterstamped Civil War tokens
are fairly unusual. An A. C. Green Esq. of New York is listed in a 1863 Joint Documents of the State of Michigan as a contributor to the Library for the
Asylum Soldiers' Aid Society in Detroit seemingly making this a possible Civil War token in its own right, though pinning down an exact date of issue
could be difficult. (75-100)
388 - A. J. HUNT twice on the obverse of an 1851 Large Cent. Raw EF Coin VF. (25-50)
389 - L. G. HILL / JOHNSTOWN on the obverse of an 1837 Canadian Half Penny Bank Token. Raw EF Coin VF but cleaned. A L. G. Hill is listed as
a gunsmith in Johnstown New York in the Gazetteer and Business Directory of Montgomery and Fulton Counties for 1869-70. (150-200)
390 - J. JONES on the obverse of an 1836 Large Cent. Raw VF Coin VG. Rulau attributes another J. JONES counterstamp but with raised letters to
Boston Massachusetts silversmith John B. Jones who was active in the early to mid 1800's. Based on the dates of these counterstamped pieces he
attributes them to the Hard Times period, HT-B162. This piece falls nicely in the Hard Times period as well. (100-150)
391 - A. KLINGER / JEWELER / ELKHART IND in curved stamp on the obverse of an 1855 Large Cent. EF Coin VG with some light marks. An
impressive counterstamp dated to the 1857-9 period. Rulau Ind 100 From the Dave Bowers reference set. (400-500)
392 - B. LORD in raised letters in a rectangular punch on the obverse of an 1802 Large Cent. Raw VF Coin FAIR. Issued by silversmith Benjamin
Lord of Athens Georgia. Very rare early Georgia counterstamp. Rulau Early Ga 30. (500-750)
393 - E. W. LOOMIS on the obverse of 1850s Large Cent. Raw VF Coin FINE but date removed. (25-50)
394 - H - M / N. YORK / 3 / Cents on the obverse of an 1831 Large Cent. EF Coin VG+. The last stamp is in script in raised letter in a form fitting
depression. An impressive looking stamp though little is known about its issue. All known examples are 1829 and 1831; Rulau counts four total. Rulau-E
NY 303 (300-400)
395 - M. L. MARSHALL on each side of an 1830 Bust Dime. EF Coin VG. Undoubtedly the stamps of Oswego New York fishing tackle and coin
dealer Morgan L. Marshall who also issued 1860, 1862 and 1863 dated struck tokens. These were likely struck before 1860 but he was still in business in
1876 per Rulau. Unlisted with this denomination. Rulau NY 1010C From the Steve Tanenbaum collection earlier from PCAC 1981. (300-400)

396 - * / O & G / * * on the obverse of an 1835 Half Cent. Raw VF Coin FINE. An enigmatic token. Rulau listed as a Hard Times Token as HT-545 a
R5. The latest dated host coin found to date is 1837. From the Dave Bowers reference set. (75-100)
397 - ROBINSON & MAC MULLEN round trade token die trial on the obverse of a 1798 Large Cent. Raw AU+ Coin has strong date but most details
are missing due to strong strike of the trial. Some planchet splits at rims also from heavy pressure. A similar token is known struck in Brass on an
octagonal planchet that was Good For 10 In Trade. Both pieces are still mavericks awaiting discovery. (200-300)
398 - C. A. Strange on the obverse of an 1837 Large Cent. Raw VF Coin GOOD with minor rim bumps. Attributed to the Bangor Maine Brass
Founder. Rulau Me-Ba 22 From the Dave Bowers reference set. (25-50)
399 - CURRENCY / J (eagle) S / J. SEETIN apparently with individual letter punches on the obverse and GOOD FOR / 25 / CENTS on the reverse of
what appears to be a planed down Large Cent. EF Coin Not Identifiable. An excellent research opportunity. The reverse and denomination remind us of
various drayage tokens, but a quick search could find no links. This piece weighs 8.68 grams and though this appears to be the Rulau plate piece, we can
see no undertype. That piece is said to be over a New Jersey colonial copper. Rulau Z83 (100-150)
400 - F. R. Strange on the obverse of an 1836 Large Cent. Raw VF Coin VG. From the Dave Bowers reference set. (0-25)
401 - (Unicorn) / CT on each side of an 1829 Half Cent. Raw VF Coin GOOD. Unicorn Cigars has been suggested as one possible attribution.
(100-150)
402 - J. M. TAYLOR / BROKER / CHATHAM St. / COR. JAMES N.Y. on the obverse of an 1853 Seated Liberty Quarter. VF Coin VG. Miller NY
889C. (50-75)
403 - VOTE THE LAND / FREE on the obverse of an 1833 Large Cent. Raw VF Coin FINE and slightly porous. Popular political token believed to
have been issued by the Free Soil party and their candidate, former President Martin Van Buren in 1848. He garnered nearly 300,000 votes but no
electoral votes. Dewitt MVB 1848-3 From the Dave Bowers reference set. (150-200)
404 - A, & G. WELLES in raised letters in rectangular punch twice intersecting with four (Eagles) in oval punches on the obverse of an 1803 Large
Cent. Raw FINE+ Coin GOOD retoning with some tape residue on reverse. Attributed to Boston by Russ Rulau as the issue of Alfred and George
Welles who were jewelers and silversmiths in that city from 1804 to 1827. Rulau Early MA 22 From the Dave Bowers reference set. (200-300)
405 - IAPN logo Los Angeles June 1980 on the reverse of a 1976-D Type One Eisenhower Bicentennial Dollar. Raw MS63 Coin MS63. A very neat
numismatic related counterstamp from the International Association of Professional Numismatists' 29th General Assembly. From the Dave Bowers
reference set. (0-25)
406 - Whitcom 1827 in raised script letters on a Spanish one Real. VF Coin POOR. A possible first initial is weak and could be an A, H or something
else. Presumably a .6 is missing after the date. A very intriguing stamp in need of further research, unlisted on a one real. Rulau-E Mav 57B (100-150)
407 - WIS & (P)ERRY / SHOES / NO 137 / (BR)OADWAY on the obverse of an 1835 Large Cent. FINE Coin AG. A few letters missing or weak.
Presumably a New York firm but a quick search found not matches. A Lloyd Perry at that address was listed as a Notary Public in the 1899 edition of
Bender's Lawyer Directory. Wis would seem to be an unusual surname so additional research should prove productive. (150-200)
Hard Times Tokens
408 - LOW 3 / HT-5 R3 NGC VF25 Very attractive obverse though reverse is weak as often seen. Andrew Jackson President 1832. A similar example
brought $260 in our July 2007 auction. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (300-400)
409 - LOW 4 / HT-6 R2 NGC AU55 Andrew Jackson Reelected 1832. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (500-750)
