Disconcerting . . .
When you send material to me to be published,
please check to see if it is copyrighted or not. If it is,
we must ask permission to reprint it from the original
owner of the copyright. DO NOT leave off or change any
material in the article.
Recently our magazine was found to have a copyrighted article in it without proper identification.
Luckily, the owner understood my situation and did
not charge us for publishing it. In fact he stated, “Don’t
be too hard on the members of your
group. I’m sure they received this article as an anonymous piece floating
around the Internet. The only person I
really blame is the one who first shared
it with others without crediting me for
it.”
The dilemma is that when something
floats around the Internet for awhile, it
has a tendency to change, so you can
never be sure where it came from. You
can read it and, perhaps, send it to another person or
persons, BUT publishing it is another matter.
You can’t blame the person who created it to demand
credit and remuneration if it is published by a profit
making organization. If a non-profit organization desires
to publish it, I say again, the organization must obtain
permission from the owner of the copyright.
If you want to send me material, I am happy to receive it, but if you have any feelings that it is copyrighted
material do not send it!
Most copyright owners are understanding about this
problem, but some may not be. We don’t want to get our
organization in a difficult position.
two entities in the future. Perhaps one of the PC manufacturers will buy out one of the BIOS manufacturers
or try to develop their own BIOS. I doubt if the BIOS
manufacturers would be willing to give away their
manufacturing techniques!
Scams, Scams, Scams
Watch out for Web postcards bearing greetings, they
might contain a Trojan horse program.
These new attacks use sophisticated techniques to
trick users into installing them. And I
understand that they can fool antivirus
and firewall software.
Watch out for messages which state
“You have received a virtual postcard
from a family member.” It may link you
to a site that installs the Trojan.
Another method is you receive a
message from a reputable concern but it
is a spoofed address. As I understand this
scam, it will take you to the ligit website
but not without first going through another website
which looks like the legit one.
Ain’t programming grand?

& Scams
Watch Your BIOS
The BIOS is like the computers primitive part of
the brain, it does things “automatically.” The operating
system might be compared to the cognizant part of the
grey matter.
With all the advancements being made in computing, a greater relationship is needed between the OS and
the BIOS. However, the construction and installation of
the BIOS is a closely guarded secret by a small number
of PC makers.
Look for some changes in the relationship of these
Page 2
Another Scam
Another scam I recently heard about is not at all
related to computing, but I believe I should mention
it here.
This scam involves the hi-jacking of your car. It
works this way. When you return to your car after shopping, you start the car then when you start to back out,
you notice a message or sticky note attached to your
back window. Naturally, you put the car in park (with
the motor running) and get out to remove the piece of
paper.
It is then that someone jumps into your car and
drives off with it. AND if you are a woman and leave your
purse on the passenger front seat, they have your identification, credit cards, your home address and maybe
other valuable information you wouldn’t want to fall into
evil hands. If you are of the male gender, don’t forget to
tell your wife or driving children about this scheme.
In all things be careful. To be fore-warned is to be
fore-armed!

Stu’s Final Words
We had a great election last
month. You reelected all five members of the board whose terms were
retiring. Since I was reelected, but will
have a separate seat already, there is
an opening. We will give it to the
most interested person who attends
our next board meeting on April 7.
Also, at that meeting the board will
elect new officers. So, come and join
the fun.
This will be my last message as
your President. I have served three
consecutive years which is the limit
allowed by law (oops, I mean be bylaw). A member of the board will be
elected to that position. I look forward
to seeing who it is. I will give him my
support as he has given me his. We
ask all members of the club to support
him as well as all of the board. I have
enjoyed being President and shouting
at all of you at the meetings. It is interesting to look out at you and see who
is sleeping. We must do something to
spice up our meetings. I think they
have at least been interesting. Don’t
you? It takes a lot of work to keep the
club running. I hope some of you will

I hope you who are going to build

I received a most pleasant surprise
e-mail a few days ago, and, with your
kind permission, I’d like to share it
with you today. Seems that ProShow
Gold has once again gone Gold! The
e-mail title stated: “ProShow Gold 2.5
Upgrade Now Available – Introducing
the newest version of ProShow Gold!”
Being mild-manned like my idol, Clark
K., I unhesitatingly downloaded my new
little prize. It didn’t take long before I
found that new “jewel!” To say that I was
Page 5
stunned - as if I had just opened a package of Kryptonite, was quite simply put,
“the understatement of the year.” Uh!
Maybe I’d better explain myself a little
better here? Let’s go back to:
The Beginning
For the new upgrade, thinking I
needed the original serial number of
ProShow Gold 2.0 – which, you may recall, I reviewed favorably last April (see
also http://www.ucs.org/mag/pdf.php
May04) - I frantically started searching through the box (I love boxes!), the
CDROM, the manual (I love manuals!),
everywhere? No luck. Heck! I put in a
“free” call to Tech Support to help solve
my dilemma. (*) Caveat. Here’s where
always reading the license comes into
play. There is a one (1) year limitation
on “free” upgrades before you must
pay the $44.95US upgrade fee again.
My “free” upgrade period had expired
two (2) months ago – sometime back in
January. Note. The new version 2.5 was
released on February 23, 2005.
How could this be? It was less than
a year since my review? What’s going
on here? OK for me, because the lovely
PR contact person (Amanda) saved me
again, but for the average user, this
could easily be an equally shocking
discovery of having to pay dearly again,
and in such a short time period since
purchasing ProShow Gold 2.0? My
question then - thinking as the average
User - “Would it really be worth getting
and paying for, the upgrade (the Kryptonite?) after having gotten the original
version 2.0 such a short while ago?”
Note. All upgrades through version 2.0
had originally been free. Comment. It
was well worth it originally, that’s for
sure, but now, “Well, Let’s see for our-
Blue Chips Magazine —April 2005
selves about this upgrade thing?”
First, What is ProShow Gold 2.5
(PS25)?
PS25 allows Users to easily and efficiently create quality multimedia (now
including DVD) slide show presentations to share with friends and family.
“ProShow Gold 2.5 is the next logical
step in empowering consumers to get
the most out of their computers and
photos. Even in the last year the industry
has produced better digital camcorders,
higher resolution digital cameras, and
lower cost DVD writers [ed Note. And,
don’t forget those ubiquitous, newer
photo capable cell phones?]. ProShow
gold is an excellent way to get more value
out of these new and exciting technological advancements,” says Paul Schmidt,
President, Photodex Corporation. You
can easily:
1. Create slide shows for any
occasion!
watching a
movie you’ve
created yourself.
Photo enthusiasts and Professionals
can use ProShow Gold to easily create
stunning “slide show” presentations
for friends, family, business, or just for
fun. PS25 will automatically gather all
the contents and project files of a slide
and conveniently save them to a desired
location. Simply select your photos and
drop them in the show. Record your own
voice-over track or add a soundtrack
from a CD. Add slide motion, caption
effects and pick from over 280 stunning
quality transition effects to add that final
touch.
2. Take your photos further!
ProShow Gold gives you more output options than any other slide show software.
Create DVDs and Video CDs (VCDs) that
play back on your TV. Stream your show
on the Web. Generate MPEG video files
for PC viewing. Build screen savers for
yourself or others. Make self-contained
executable slide shows (.EXEs), perfect
for e-mailing or posting online. Write
PC autorun CDs that automatically play
when inserted into any PC. ProShow
Gold does it all!
3. Create Amazing Effects!
ProShow Gold allows you to add motion
effects to your images and video. Zoom
in to points of interest. Pan around on
a panoramic image. You can even rotate
a photo or video while the slide show is
playing, and
4. Take your photos to the limit
with PS25! Ultimately, you will be absolutely amazed at the quality of your
slide show, as it plays back on so many
different video and disc media (see list
near end of review). It’s actually like

Secondly,
Completely New
Features
(Enhancements) in
PS25
L i g h t
Box View.
The all new
Light Box
view lets you
view a larger
number of
slides at once
in a two (2)
dimensional list. It provides all the same
control as the traditional Slide List, but
with the ability to see more of your show
at once. It can be docked (and used in the
main window instead of the Slide List),
or can be floated and used as a separate
window.
Voice Over Recording. Record
voice-overs for your slides right from the
Slide Options sound tab with PS25’s built
in Voice Over Recording function. Your
recording will be automatically saved
and attached to the selected slide.
Apple QuickTime Movie Support (Requires QuickTime installed on your computer). PS25
supports .MOV files in your show. Simply drag and drop a Quicktime file into
the Slide List.
Audio CD Support. With built-in
support for Audio CDs, you can use a
track of an audio CD in your show. You
no longer need to rip and convert your
music CDs into digital files before you
can use them in your show.
Auto-Save, Backup and Recovery. This feature ensures that you can
recover your show if you were to ever
encounter computer difficulties (This
still happens?) while using PS25. Plus,
new backup options let you quickly access different generations of your saved
show files.
Image Auto-Correction. Oneclick auto-correction for slide images
makes it fast and easy to clean up our
digital camera images. The new autocorrect feature sets the brightness, white
point, black point and hue adjustments

for you, and lets you tweak the settings
for the perfect image.
Sync Slides to Specific Track.
Easily time sections of your show to different musical tracks using the new Sync
Selected Slides to Track tool.
Improved Shows Management
for Output. The all new Shows tab for
every output format makes adding
multiple shows in your DVD, Video CD
or PC show easier than ever. Change
menu thumbnails and show titles in
a snap with new functions for quickly
setting these show options from the
Shows tab.
Thirdly, and Most Importantly,
ProShow 2.5 Lets You Get Up
Close and Really Creative with
your Digital Media!
Considering how easy it is to install
and use ProShow Gold 2.5, get a load of
ALL these eye-popping features (benefits?) of PS25 (Note. You’ll need a
“bigger” wheelbarrow now for this part).
Here’s a few(?) examples:
1. You can create completely
customized slide shows with ProShow Gold 2.5.

and more

CD without any extra conversion, using
the audio CD sound track tool

Blue Chips Magazine —April 2005
on any PC using ProShow Gold’s “create once, play everywhere” technology. Combine both TV and PC shows
on one disc for maximum compatibility

any PC (no additional installation or
software needed)
Protect your shows with time-out
and limitation options
Create Windows Screen Savers
(SCRs) from your shows
Create standard MPEG I and II
video files; control resolution, format

Conclusion
Which brings us right back to the
question I raised initially about “. .
.getting and paying $44.95 for the upgrade?”
Bottom Line Facts: Comparison Between ProShow 2.5 (Upgrade) Gold and ProShow (It’s such
a huge list, please visit their web site:
proshowgold/compare.html>)
Whichever version you choose, both
ProShow and ProShow Gold 2.5 provide
amazing quality. Mind you, if I were
asked, it seems to me that the “Gold”
clearly has it all, and for only $15.00
more; but, decide for yourself -$29.95
versus $44.95
I’ve certainly enjoyed looking into
and sharing my thoughts with you on
this newest version of ProShow Gold,
version 2.5. Sure-fire, “Hot ‘n’ Gold
as all get out - And, then some.”
ProShow Gold 2.5 is definitely worth
buying outright, and as for the price of
an upgrade, heck, even if it now comes
once a year! Do it. Well, what are you
waiting for? You can get it right now, and
give it a “Free” trial ride. I think you’ll
be awfully glad you did. I certainly am.
That’s for darn sure!
Umm! Now, Since we haven’t

Sound of Music Revisited
To commemorate her 69th birthday
last October 1, actress/vocalist JulieAndrews made a special appearance at
Manhattan’s Radio City Music Hall Julie
for the benefit of the AARP. One of the
musical numbers she performed was
“My Favorite Things” from the legendary movie “Sound Of Music.”
However, the lyrics of the song were
deliberately adapted for the entertainment of her “senior citizen” audience.
Here are the lyrics she recited:
Maalox and nose drops and needles
for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new
dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in
string,
These are a few of my favorite
things.
Cadillacs and cataracts and hearing
aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false
teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches
with swings,
These are a few of my favorite
things.
Back pains, confused brains, and
no fear of sinnin’,
Thin bones and fractures and hair
that is thinnin’,
And we won’t mention our short
shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite
things.
When the joints ache,
When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I’ve
had,
And then I don’t feel so bad.
Ms. Andrews received a standing
ovation from the crowd that lasted over
four minutes and repeated encores.
Out of the Mouth’s of Babes. . .
Since the Pledge of Allegiance and
The Lord’s Prayer are not allowed in
most public schools anymore Because
the word “God” is mentioned.... A kid
in Arizona wrote the attached NEW
School prayer.
When the pipes leak,
When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite
things,
And then I don’t feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets, and corn
pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked
with onions,
Bathrobes and heat pads and hot
meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite
things.

Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If Scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple,
orange or green,
That’s no offense;
it’s a freedom scene.
The law is specific,
the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud
are a serious vice.

For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with
no faith at all.
In silence alone we must meditate,
God’s name is prohibited
by the state.
We’re allowed to cuss and
dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses,
tongues and cheeks.
They’ve outlawed guns,
but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book
makes me liable.
We can elect a pregnant
Senior Queen,
And the ‘unwed daddy,’
our Senior King.
It’s “inappropriate” to
teach right from wrong,
We’re taught that such
“judgments” do not belong.
We can get our condoms
and birth controls,
Study witchcraft,
vampires and totem poles.
But the Ten Commandments
are not allowed,
No word of God must
reach this crowd.
It’s scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the
school’s a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot;
My soul please take!
Amen
