RAMADAN IN MALAYSIA 2014 / 1435H YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO THE BEST RAMADAN EXPERIENCE IN MALAYSIA 2 RAMADHAN IN MALAYSIA 2014 / 1435H Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims where they are required to fast from dawn to dusk. In Malaysia, most offices close at least an hour early during this month, and you can see an unusual amount of vehicles on the roads all rushing to get home to prepare for the day’s breaking of fast (iftar). Perhaps the most special and distinguishing aspect of Ramadan in Malaysia is the Ramadan bazaars that can be found at almost every corner all over the country, selling a huge array of mouth-watering delicacies. During iftar, a sense of camaraderie is apparent as everyone in the family gathers around to share meals. Come nightfall, mosques would be filled with Muslims from all walks of life coming together to perform the Tarawih, a special night prayers performed throughout the month. Hidden within the last ten days of Ramadan is a special night called Laylat al-Qadr, meaning ‘the night of decree’ in Arabic. It was on this night that the Holy Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Muslims treat these nights as the best time to perform supplementary prayers and recite the Quran. During Ramadhan, Muslims are also obliged to fulfil their 4th pillar by paying tithes (Zakat) to the less fortunate as a way to purify one’s wealth and soul. A festive atmosphere can be felt throughout the month especially in shopping hotspots for Eid-ul Fitr such as Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur. Houses decorated with twinkling fairy lights or the more traditional paraffin-fuelled lamps made from tin cans or bamboo sticks are quite a common sight at night during Ramadan, as are children playing with sparklers and fireworks.
