CONTENTS (3-4) Forward Gary Stewart, Director, Wayra (6-7) Wayra in numbers, 2015 (7-23) Winning Wayra start-ups 2015-16 (24-28) Winning Velocity Health start-ups 2015-16 MEDIA CONTACT Danny Bartlett Head of Communications Wayra UK & Wayra UnLtd Danny.Bartlett@Telefonica.co.uk +44 (0) 7860 760 841 Hello and welcome to Wayra UK & Wayra UnLtd, part of the global Telefónica OpenFuture_ network. We’re delighted that you could join us for Wayra demoDay 2015, an annual event that brings together investors, mentors, leaders from the business, education and voluntary sectors as well as those key influencers from the start-up ecosystem in the United Kingdom and across the world. You’ll hear from two such influencers on their entrepreneurial journeys and the importance they place on diversity. Indeed, Martha Lane Fox, Baroness of Soho, and co-founder of lastminute.com, will be our esteemed keynote and will discuss the vision behind Dot Everyone, a new digital institution set up to advance the understanding and use of digital technology to deliver prosperity and social well-being for all citizens. Likewise, exinternational football player and entrepreneur Sol Campbell will join me on stage to discuss the importance of democratising entrepreneurship. It was will.i.am at Wayra demoDay 2014 who said “entrepreneurs are the new rockstars” and spoke of the importance of finding the “black Bill Gates.” Since then, Wayra has made meaningful steps in promoting the benefits of diversity within the start-up ecosystem. When we commissioned startupDNA, the first research study of its kind to reveal the social makeup of Britain’s start-up ecosystem, we learned that while there is a diversity deficit, start-ups are embracing diversity. We found diversity to be a key driver in the acceleration of start-ups, with over 78.9% declaring that it has helped their businesses to compete and 71.5% agreeing that it helped them to find new markets. We also discovered that, compared to the United States, those working in UK start-ups were five times more likely to be female, 2.5 times more likely to be under the age of 36 and 10 times more likely to be non-white or Asian. This is all immensely positive and marks a significant milestone in how we may one day be able to ‘weaponise’ our rich diversity to give us a competitive edge very few ecosystems have. We’re building towards that future by being an integral part of the global Telefónica OpenFuture_ network, which supports entrepreneurs of all backgrounds, from ideation all the way through to the delivery of a product or service to market. To date, Open Future has invested over 500M euros across 17 countries and supported over 600 businesses. These include social ventures through Wayra UnLtd, which topped the UK’s Social Incubator Fund with over £12.5M investment raised. We’ve also signed partnerships with major organisations that share in our beliefs. This year alone, we launched Velocity Health with MSD - the first preventative healthcare accelerator in the UK, signed acceleration partnerships with Cambridge Wireless (CW) and Oxford’s Isis Incubator, and can reveal for the first time, a new partnership with Oldham Council to establish a digital enterprise hub in the greater Manchester area, with the intention of strengthening the technology corridor between the North and South of the country. And this is just the beginning! If you have any questions about what we’re doing, how we can partner or how to invest in one of our start-ups, please don’t hesitate to seek me out. I look forward to chatting with you and I hope you spend a great day with us! FOR IMMEDIATE RELASE WINNING WAYRA START-UPS 2015/16 Automated device management for IoT 1248 In the IoT, the challenges of managing connected devices at scale become very significant. This creates unwanted costs, but more importantly, limits a business’ ability to grow. Automated device management is the key to controlling these costs, and enabling the growth. This means monitoring, triage, firmware update and SLA reporting. We call it DevicePilot. http://1248.io @1248_io info@1248.io TEAM CEO: Pilgrim Beart CTO: Toby Jaffey COO: Keith Reed CMO: Gordon Ellis-Brown All vertical sectors will face similar challenges, and our solution is not technically focused on specific sectors. However, we have early traction in Energy sector, partly through our personal networks, and partly because Energy/Smart grid is a sector going through exciting disruptive change right now. DevicePilot will be charged on a per device, per month basis, as a service. This matches the most common business model of our customers. Founder/CEO, Pilgrim Beart. CONVERGE LOGO www.converge.io @converge_io Manual monitoring is a systemic problem across construction, oil and gas, mining, manufacturing. Engineers spend hours manually monitoring embedded sensors and analysign the data that they produce. Converge eliminates this problem by making wireless sensor networks ubiquitous. It is made up of three parts: the node, the hub and the platform. The node is a sensor agnostic device that streams data back to the hub and platform. The platform analyses that data in real-time. Construction, Oil and Gas, and mining are each worth trillions of dollars. We have decided to focus on solving the concrete temperature monitoring problem. Who will build your mobile utility app? Smart entrepreneurs with great ideas face a key decision when thinking on their utility apps. Building them from scratch, by hiring skilled programmers or using do-it-yourself (DiY) online services. DiY are limited due to lack of: a) native functionality, b) customization and c) support and guidance. Hiring talented developers becomes a time- consuming, costly and skill-requiring process. WEBSITE TWITTER enrique@brandtalk.us We want to revolutionize mobile utility applications development community by automating code writing and standardizing processes from scratch to finish, filling the gap between limited do-it-yourself online services and costly hiring of skilled programmers, reducing the application development cycle, in terms of time, skills and efforts in coding and debugging, adding connectors to integrate mobile utility apps with IFTTT, and providing a complete, reliable hosting solution for the apps. The total Mobile Application Development Platform Market is expected to grow from $1,919.9 million in 2014 to $7,151.2 million by 2019 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 30.1% during the forecast period. In terms of regions, NA is expected to be the biggest market in terms of market size, whereas Europe and APAC are expected to experience increased market traction during the forecasted period. Grow and monetise online audiences and communities selling custom products through social media MOTEEFE LOGO Social media celebrities and online community managers are always looking for new ways to engage with and monetise their follower base. Yet, they lack resources and skills to produce and market their own products. Existing printon-demand platforms provide low ($2-3) returns and no marketing tools to capitalise on these emerging social commerce opportunities. www.moteefe.com Moteefe provides an end-to-end solution to start selling products through social media and monetise niche markets and communities. Moteefe produces and ships all purchased products and provides the support and tools needed to reach, engage and convert social media audiences. Moteefe provides its sellers with profits that are 2-3x higher than those of incumbent platforms. twitter.com/moteefe info@moteefe.com Social media is the fastest growing channel for e-commerce. Social commerce has grown from a $5B market in 2011 to $30B in 2015. The competitive landscape of incumbent platforms is highly fragmented. With print-on-demand services becoming increasingly commoditised Moteefe has a strong winning proposition in the space of engaging and monetising social media audiences through selling custom products. PHOTO HERE OF FOUNDER We digitize transportation pallets to harness data from supply chains. PALLETECH Pallet poolers (companies that own pallets and lease them on per-use basis) reserve up to 15% of their sales price for manual tracking of their pallets, which amounts to $10Bn a year. The value of lost and counterfeited cargo in pharma alone is worth $60Bn. $45bn of sales is generated from fake automotive parts around the globe because of poor tracking of cargo. Currently, labels and RFIDs are used, but both are limited to scanning locations and require large infrastructure investments. www.palletech.co N/A anthony@palletech.co PalleTech offers an infrastructure agnostic solution by seamlessly connecting the information in industry warehouses, shop floors and fleets. Thanks to Bluetooth Low Energy beacons implemented into the pallet, information becomes easily collectable and available to smartphones and cloud based web apps via a mesh sensor network. That means real time visibility (indoor and outdoor location), custom monitoring, and alerting. In seconds, an “Industrial Internet of Pallets” can be created. Having spent 5 months of our product-market fit, pharma companies are our primary target due to upcoming regulation. By 2018, 70% of the world’s medicines will have to, by law, be tracked and traced at the pallet level. Pfizer alone has approved $100M budget to update pallet tracing capabilities in their 350 manufacturing facilities worldwide. The upcoming spending in the pharma industry alone is projected to be over $5Bn in coming 2 years. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WINNING VELOCITY HEALTH START-UPS 2015/16 1 Million Children die needlessly due to premature birth every year. MOM - The Inflatable Incubator was designed to give them a chance. mOm Incubators Ltd Premature birth is now the largest killer of under 5's throughout the entire world. This problem is relatively easily solved in the west with the use of conventional baby incubators. However in more emerging markets, where they lack these simple pieces of equipment, it is often a incredibly difficult and heart wrenching process for everyone involved www.momincubators.co m @momincubators TEAM mOm was designed to give these children a chance. mOm is a robust, electronically controlled, inflatable incubator designed to decrease the premature death rate throughout the entire world. Not only is mOm a fraction of the cost of conventional incubators but can also be collapsed to a 25th of the size which both for transport and in cramped health centres is very advantageous. mOm has been designed from the ground up to be easily maintained, repaired and most importantly incredibly easy to clean. mOm is an access product. For health centres that would require and could cater for a mOm straight away there is a potential market volume of 1.3 million units. If this was coupled with a solar care package this number could double. This is not taking into the account the considerable interest mOm has had in both Europe and the United States as a transport, precautionary, evacuation and a disaster relief product. To start all business operations and sales of mOm units will be conducted from the UK and will be sold through NGO’s, Charities and disaster relief teams. mOm also includes a consumable business model. Infection control is one of the biggest problems with incubators currently. Due to our entire body having the ability to be ripped out and replaced we can not only reduce the infection risk to 0% which cannot currently be achieved, but also produce a cost and time saving over current methods. There will be different uptakes in developed and emerging markets and our models take this into account. James Roberts - Design Engineer and the Original Inventor of mOm. Winner of the 2014 international James Dyson award and inducted into the Royal Academy of Engineers Enterprise scheme. Matthew Khoory - 10 years experience at GE healthcare in business development and commercialisation with 3 years experience in South East Asia. Previously headed up another london based start up (mediwise) which is currently being acquired. Dr Rola Hallam - Original inspiration for mOm and worldwide renowned paediatrician talking at the UN, WHO, EU etc. Dr Kathy Burgione - Heads the charity born on the edge and will be the primary tester for mOm. She has currently set up her own neonatal care ward in Mbale Uganda. mOm was awarded the 2014 international James Dyson award for innovation as well as the 2015 Royal academy of Engineers award for enterprise and innovation. mOm Incubators was awarded A Diamond prize by MassChallenge for the most impactful startup. mOm has already received a license offer for the technology from a leading incubator Manufacturer. We have received a 100K proof of concept grant from innovate UK and have secured the necessary funding to both build prototypes and test them in the field. We have set up a testing site for mOm in Uganda and we have also received Letters of Intent for over half of our first year orders two and a half years before market launch. PHOTO HERE OF FOUNDER Delivering significant data to patients and healthcare when it matters APARITO A patient’s ability to walk (and its link to activity) is often examined as a way of understanding disease progression, and the effects of new drugs. However, current assessments used are snapshot sterile assessments during hospital visits and does not give a full perspective of the patient’s experience. These tests are often invasive and time consuming to complete, and do not produce clinically meaningful data linked to the patients’ real world expreience. www.aparito.com @aparitohealth TEAM aparito is using wearable technology to passively monitor walking and activity. This is synchronized with a mobile app, which collects additional data on four key areas of the patient’s experience; medication adherence, healthcare usage, adverse events, and disease specific quality of life/ PROs, This complete data capture provides a complete overview of the patient’s condition which is relevant to all stakeholders, patients, doctors, regulators and health technology assessment agencies. We are currently targeting rare diseases as this is our area of expertise, however, the solution addresses a possible need in many other conditions. There are over 6,000 rare diseases affecting 32 million people in Europe. 50% of which are children. The orphan drug market is growing at a greater rate than non-orphan designations and is expected to reach $112 billion in 2017. Each disease requires a number of clinical trials for Market Authorisation and data collection for post marketing surveillance. We are a patient driven organisation committed to delivering high quality data relevant to patients. Pharmaceuticals will commission us to set up observational trials. Once the initial trial is complete companies can opt for subscription support. This information will be used by pharmaceuticals in a way that aligns with patients interests and increases the quality of treatments available. This approach has been validated with current Actelion contract in partnership with the Niemann-Pick Association. Elin Haf Davies began her career as a Children’s nurse. Her PhD examined new ways of evaluating ataxia and gait in children before working at the European Medicine Agency regulating pharma companies in their drug development plans. Ed Freed is the Chief Operating Officer of a Creative Technology Agency and has experience building apps (some with integrated wearables) for corporates. James Skinner has experience in drug molecule synthesis and design elements. The team has the skills and experience required to address the clinical and technical challenge of this project. Aparito’s biggest achievement to date is the partnership with the Niemann-Pick disease group, who supported us to secure a contract with Actelion Pharmaceuticals. Empowering Health Professionals Prescribe Wellness TickerFit Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) is a proven and cost effective evidence based secondary prevention programme, which is offered to patients who have suffered a cardiac event or undergone heart surgery. CR is proven to reduce a patient’s five-year mortality by 27% and hospital readmissions by 40%, yet only 14-44% of eligible patients receive this life saving treatment. The current model of CR delivery is out-dated and does not lend itself to scale. http://www.tickerfit.com TickerFit’s technology enables healthcare providers to deliver chronic disease rehabilitation programmes remotely, thus allowing them to scale programmes to many more patients cost effectively. TickerFit personalised interventions put the patient at the centre of their recovery journey to drive positive behaviour change. Positive outcomes are optimised by identifying early, those that are in need of support and by providing communication channels for direct intervention where required. For payers, this ensures that resources are focused on what matters allowing for scaled delivery of services and driving reduced readmissions. @TickerFit There are over 7m people living with CVD in the UK, costing £19b/yr. CVD causes approximately 160,000 deaths annually in the UK - more than ¼ of all deaths (BHF, 2015). In 2013, 37,000 patients failed to receive CR due to lack of availability and accessibility of programmes. The NHS has explicitly stated that they aim to increase CR uptake to 65% nationwide (currently 14-44% by location). In the USA, the situation is similar with CVD costs at $444 billion, 14m eligible CR patients and a very low 20-30% uptake rate. TEAM TickerFit licences its platform to hospital departments and private clinics. TickerFit offers a £60 per patient licence model in addition to our volume based plans which are tailored to the larger volumes in hospital departments. In either case, health professionals access the TickerFit web platform to customise interventions that are then delivered to their patients via our free mobile applications. In addition to platform licencing, TickerFit integrates bespoke and 3rd party patient educational materials and for this charges additional fees.
