Lanham Camp 586 Greetings Brothers and fellow compatriots. Well I sure was pleased to see so many faces at my first meeting. Looking out over the room, I saw several visitors and was pleased at the comments I received on the meeting in general and on the Guardian Program I presented. January is traditionally a good month for our Camp, with the Fort Worth Stock Show parade and rodeo. This is one of the events where our mounted Color Guard shines every year, to seeing all those participants from so many Camps coming together and flying the flags of the Confederacy for all to see is an inspiring sight! And to have the Texas Division Commander Johnny Holley, and so many other Division and Brigade officers there participating is a sign of the excellent leadership they provide the Texas Division. Our own 3rd Brigade Commander Calvin Allen provided the lead and he was carrying our Camp flag at the head of the SCV section of the parade! And for the entire stock show, Calvin with members of the Texas Division Cavalry and Mounted Color Guard and several members of Terry’s Texas Rangers, Company I, rode in many grand entries at the rodeo, and that is always a stirring sight! And to hear the cheers from the audience is so great! Calvin and the other members who participated at the Stock Show grand entries always make excellent recruiting opportunity for our Camp and for the SCV. As always Calvin and David Wilson, our own 2nd Lt Commander lead the way for the Texas Division Cavalry. I want to personally thank all of them for the effort and sacrifice they gave during the show and I know, our Camp supports them in all ways. Our Camp is looking into new events for the coming year in addition to the ones we always participate in. I feel we need to target our own 3rd Brigade area and focus on events in Parker and Palo Pinto County first, as these areas will help grow our Camp. Each and every one of you should have business cards with you to be a mobile recruiting post. Each and every one of you should set a goal to recruit one new member this year, and that way our Camp doubles. And we can build on that by assisting Calvin grow new Camps here in the 3rd Brigade. Remember we recruit for the SCV. not just our Camp and our 3rd Brigade. (Continued on next page) SO N S O F CO N F ED ER A T E V E TE RA NS Governor Samuel W. T. Lanham, Camp 586 I have begun calling members who miss the meetings to find out what is going on in that members life, to see if we can help them, as is our charge. We each need to focus on one another, in addition to our busy lives, because as brothers united we present a very strong front and the bonds of fellow compatriots is unbreakable. So when someone has an illness, a death, anything important going on I will announce it both in email blasts so we can rally around that man, and here in our newsletter as well. During the month of January I sent Norma Holley a card and letter of condolences on the loss of her Mother. Norman is the wife of Division Commander Johnny Holley. I also sent a letter and card to Diane Dyess, She is the wife of Jack Dyess, Lt Commander of the Colonel William H. Griffin Camp,2235. Diane and Jack were attending a formal Confederate Ball in Houston, when she slipped and broke her wrist on the dance floor, and Jack, being the Southern Gentleman, grabbed her by both wrists and pulled her to her feet, thus aggravating the injury. She had surgery on the wrist and is recovering. And last, our own Debbie Wilson sent her resignation from the Order of Confederate Rose chapter in our Camp. Debbie wants to focus her energies on her horses, her family and the Dry Creek Ranch she and David own. I sent her a letter thanking her for her long service to this Camp and I know we all wish her well. I did include she is always welcome to return and our Camp will always be the better for her time she spent with us. The point is, we are Brothers, thus we as a Camp and as members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans are family. We may not always get along, but we all should be there for one another. As your Commander and your Brother I will hold you as family and will be there for you, and I am sure you all feel the same. Remember, my phone number and email are there, should you need me. I believe in our Camps open door policy and will always listen with care and compassion. Deo Vendice and Forward the Colors! Larry Martin Commander Governor Samuel W T Lanham Camp 586 Weatherford Texas SO N S O F CO N F ED ER A T E V E TE RA NS Governor Samuel W. T. Lanham, Camp 586 ADJUTANT’S CALL With the passing of the Fort Worth Stock Show weather, it is time to start being active in the camp programs. You listened to me last month and I will refrain from repeating a valuable message, because as intelligent humans, you understood. Now it is time to perform a mind set to attend the Fourth Monday Camp Meetings. This year a variety of programs will be presented and something can be learned from each and every meeting. It is a trite, old saying, but you do get out what you invest. All trips start with a single step! Just start attending our regular meetings. The Editor’s View Greetings Compatriots, February is here with all it’s “glory”. Texas winters, as we know, can be anything from 80 degrees to a major ice storm. Literally! February seems to always have it’s share of surprises. Already we had to cancel the Executive meeting due to inclement weather. One week later we are enjoying 70 degree temps! We have a lot of events coming up it seems. It IS one of our busy seasons. April 12 is the Medal of Honor Parade in Gainesville. We really need to make a showing. The crowds seem to love us. In May there is Millsap Log Cabin Day out in Millsap. I’ve never participated but hear it’s a great event. It’s not too early to start making plans for the Division Convention in Houston, June 6 through 8, followed in July with the National Convention in Charleston, SC. July 16 through 19. I know I’ve missed a lot of events, especially in other Brigades. Read ALL the newsletters to keep up to date on what’s going on. The Division website is scvtexas.org. Our Camp website is samlanhamscv.org. My email address is texjer@live.com. Give me ideas on how to improve this newsletter. Like I say, it is OUR newsletter and first impression to the world. On page 14 you will find something I wanted to do. I call it the “Wall of Honor”. It lists the Ancestor, State, rank, Company, and the name of the Camp Member. Please check yours to make sure I have it correctly. MANY thanks to Vaughn, he made this easy with his excellent record keeping. If you can think of a better name for this let me know too. I want this to be something we can be proud of. Humbly Yours, Jerry Puckett Editor, Cook, and Chief Bottle Washer W.T. Lanham Camp #586 Weatherford, TX Page 3 SO N S O F CO N F ED ER A T E V E TE RA NS Governor Samuel W. T. Lanham, Camp 586 My Confederate Ancestor By Larry Martin My Confederate ancestor was easy to choose for the first inaugural article for our newsletter. I spoke about him at our last meeting and will share more with the Camp. Those that did not attend our last meeting missed a good one. My Great Grandfather ,Charles C. Martin was born in Holt, Buchannan County Missouri on 1 April 1842 to David Williamson Martin1809-1905 and his wife Rosanna Bowman Martin 1811-1889. He was the 4th child they had and grew up in Missouri. When the war came he traveled to Arkansas to enlist in Gate’s 1st Missouri Cavalry Regiment. Soon after, because they needed Infantry instead of Cavalry he was transferred to the newly formed 9th Missouri Sharpshooters, otherwise known as Pindall’s Sharpshooters for Major Lebbus Pindall the Regimental commander. He was assigned to Company A. Colonel Richard H. Musser was the Battalion Commander soon promoted him to Corporal and transferred him to Company C where he served throughout the war. Pindall’s Sharpshooters was formed on 10 November 1862 and was assigned to Burns Brigade, Parsons Division. Later they were transferred to 1st Missouri Brigade,1st Missouri Division, 2nd Corps Trans Mississippi Department for the duration of the war. The 9th fought in the battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas on 7 December 1862, then the Battle of Helena Arkansas on 4 July 1863 attempting to relieve pressure at the siege of Vicksburg. Next he fought at the battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana on 9 April 1864, then at Camden Arkansas at the Battle of Poison Springs 18 April 1864. Then on 30 April he fought at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry Arkansas. This too was in the Camden Arkansas area. They stayed in the area but never fought in large battles again and were surrendered on 2 June 1865, By General Kirby Smith, 2 months after Lee surrendered at Appomattox. The 9th Missouri Sharpshooters were paroled on 7 June 1865. The men of the 9th were loaded on the Steamboat “Kentucky” to sail home. On the evening of 9 June 1865, the boat, way overloaded struck partially submerged logs on the Red River and begin taking on water. The river Pilot tried to run her aground before alerting passengers but it was unsuccessful. The boat sank in mid river and 288 passengers including many of the 9ths men perished, the official estimate was 50-75 Soldier’s died. My Great Grandfather survived and eventually made it home to Holt, Missouri. (Continued on next page) SO N S O F CO N F ED ER A T E V E TE RA NS Governor Samuel W. T. Lanham, Camp 586 The battle flag of the 9th Missouri Sharpshooters is still on display at the Little Rock old Capital Museum . The war was truly brother against brother. My Great Grandfathers brothers fought on both sides. The oldest Benjamin L. Martin (1838-1915) was a Private in CO B 21st Ohio Infantry, Jeptha T Martin (1840-1916) Was a Private in CO E Missouri Cavalry (Slayback’s Lancers). His Uncle John Thorton Martin (1807-1898) was a Sergeant in CO H, Missouri Cavalry (Slayback’s Lancers) and actually went to Mexico with Colonel Alonzo Slayback and General Shelby and was present when General Shelby placed his battle flag in the Rio Grande so it would not be captured. After he returned home he and a friend who was in his unit a Mr. J.C. Son moved to Texas and Mr. Son found and purchased a printing press and all supplies needed to start a newspaper. They found their way to Palo Pinto and the newspaper was born. In time My Great Grandfather met and later married Mary Jane Wilson (1859-1942) on 15 February 1877. He began working for a Rancher and lived near the Brazos river. When the markets crashed in the east He was hired as the Jailer in the new Palo Pinto County Jail and Mary Jane, who he called “Jenny” became the Jail Cook to feed the prisoners. They lived on the first floor of the jail and had a total of 9 Children, several born in the jail. 4 of the children died as infants the other 5 grew to adulthood. He soon bought the lot across the street from the jail and built a log cabin. Over time he built a bigger home around the cabin and lived there. He was elected Justice of the Peace and served as J P of Prescient 1 Palo Pinto County until his death on 21 January 1917. His youngest Daughter lived in that house until her death in 1994 and my Aunt sold it. When they remodeled the jail to turn it into a museum, they found several artifacts from my great uncles and aunts, toys and shoes that somehow ended up under the floorboards and in nooks and crannies. These and several other items are on display at the jail museum today. Charles C. Martin was a proud member of the United Confederate Veterans Camp in Palo Pinto. His warrior tradition which began during the Colonial Wars, all the way through the service I gave our nation is a proud one. I personally guard His grave, and all the other Veterans graves in Palo Pinto City Cemetery. I am coming to know every one of them and in time my youngest daughter will guard these graves for me, and then her kids, for they too show interest in this sacred mission. I hope you are inspired to learn your ancestor’s story and are further inspired to guard the graves of these heroes as I am. SO N S O F CO N F ED ER A T E V E TE RA NS Governor Samuel W. T.
