We have mirrors all around us in a car. We have a rear view mirror slightly above our head, in
front of us. We have two side mirrors; one to see on our left and one to see on our right. These
mirrors are a very valuable asset to a driver. The use of mirrors helps us to see what is
happening behind and to the sides of our car. However, no matter how important mirrors are
when driving, we don’t drive by looking just into the mirrors. Driving while looking backwards
would make no sense, and be very dangerous. Driving requires us to look forward. Yes, we
need to look into the rear, left, or right. They give us a better perspective and viewpoint, but our
main focus and attention is what is happening before us, ahead of our cars.
I use this example of driving and mirrors to help us understand the focus of the Advent
season. This Sunday, we begin another Season of Advent, Year of Grace 2016. It’s very easy
for us to think that the focus of our Advent celebration is in the past. Sometimes, Catholics think that we celebrate
these four weeks in Advent to look back and
remember has happened in history. However, such an
understanding of Advent would be like driving our
cars by only looking into the rear view mirror. One
cannot drive a car only looking behind, in a rear view
mirror. The same is true in the Christian life,
especially the season of Advent.
Advent is not about remembering the past, or
looking behind to what has been. Instead, the season
of Advent is about looking forward. Yes, we look to
the back (to past events), just as we look into our rear
view and side mirrors, but our main attention and
focus is what is before us, ahead of us. The main
focus and attention of Advent lies ahead of us, before
us: in the future. Advent is a season that makes us
look forward to the end of time, when Christ will
return in glory. Thus, Advent makes us look forward,
not behind, we “drive” forward ever closer to the
Second Coming of Christ.
Notice, how the readings of Sacred Scripture
on this First Sunday of Advent do not look to the past,
but rather forward to the future. In the first reading,
we hear God speaking through the prophet Jeremiah
the days are coming when the Lord will appear.
Jeremiah instructs the people to look forward to the
day when God will fulfill his promise of salvation.
Likewise, in the second reading, we hear St. Paul
exhorting the Thessalonians to live their lives
blamelessly at the coming of our Lord Jesus. St. Paul
doesn’t point the Thessalonians to look back, but
rather, forward to Christ’s return in glory. Finally, the
Gospel of Luke is very clear in pointing our attention
and focus ahead, not behind. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells us to watch, not to the past, but to the future,
towards Christ’s return. In this beautiful image, we see a painting entitled the Last Judgment by Frans Francken the
Younger (1608). Frans Francken II marvelously depicts the theme of today’s Scripture readings and the focus of
the season of Advent overall. Advent does not look back in time, but looks forward to the end of time and the Last
Judgment because they still lie ahead of us. This space of time between Christ’s first coming and His Second
Coming in glory is given to us to make up our mind whether we choose Christ or not. Advent reminds us all, God
is near.
This Advent, the Church Lectionary moves to Year C. Year C is dedicated to the Gospel of Luke.
Beginning in Advent, try to read 10 minutes of Scripture a day, particularly the Gospel of Luke, with special
attention to Luke’s infancy narrative. Then, stop and meditate. Hear what God is saying to you from that passage.
May our Blessed Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us.

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. This week
we begin our second trimester after having Parent-Teacher
Conferences last week.
As we begin Advent and prepare for the coming of Christ we
will use this season at St. Joseph to reach out to those less
fortunate. Service projects our children will be participating in
is preparing stockings of toiletries for the residents of St.
Colette.
We will also be joining the Religious Ed Program in a joint
parish project a Christmas Food Drive.
December is a very busy month with all of the different
activities going on and it is easy to lose the focus of what the
Advent season is all about. The service projects and our
morning prayer, hopefully keep us focused.
Our final day of school prior to our Christmas vacation is
Friday, December 18th. St. Joseph School will be on Christmas
break from Saturday, December 19th through Sunday, January
3rd. School will resume on Monday, January 4th.

Of the fourteen players seven of them were playing in their first
tournament. Playing in their first tournament were: Xavi (k),
Marcus (k), Alec (1), Ayden (1), Natalya (3), Alisha (3), and
Nyla (5).

Tenemos espejos a nuestro alrededor en el coche, tenemos el espejo retrovisor en medio en la parte de
enfrente, dos espejos laterales; uno para ver a nuestra izquierda y otro a la derecha. Estos espejos son
muy valiosos para el conductor, ellos nos ayudan a ver lo que está sucediendo detrás y a los lados de
nuestro coche. Sin embargo, aunque son muy importantes al conducir, no conducimos unicamente por
mirar solo en los espejos. Conducir mientras se mira solo hacia atrás no tendrá sentido y es muy
peligroso. El conducir nos obliga a mirar hacia adelante y si, tenemos que mirar en la parte trasera,
izquierda o derecha. Nos dan una mejor perspectiva y punto de vista, pero nuestro principal objetivo y
nuestra atención esta en lo que está sucediendo delante de nosotros.
Uso este ejemplo de la conducción y espejos para ayudarnos a entender el enfoque de la temporada de
Adviento. Este domingo, comenzamos otra temporada de Adviento, Año de Gracia del 2016. Nos es
muy fácil pensar que el enfoque de nuestra celebración de Adviento está en el pasado. A veces, los católicos pensamos
que celebramos estas cuatro semanas de Adviento para mirar hacia atrás y recordar qué ha ocurrido en la historia. Sin
embargo, la comprensión de Adviento será como conducir nuestros carros con solo mirar en el espejo retrovisor. No se
puede conducir un coche sólo mirando hacia atrás, en un espejo retrovisor. Lo mismo ocurre en la vida cristiana, sobre
todo en el tiempo de Adviento.
En Adviento no se trata de recordar el pasado, o
mirar hacia atrás sobre lo que ha sido. En cambio, el
tiempo de Adviento es un tiempo de espera hacia adelante.
Sí, miramos atrás (a los eventos pasados), al igual que
miramos en nuestros espejos retrovisores y laterales, pero
nuestra atención principal y concentración es lo que está
delante de nosotros. El foco principal y la atención de
Adviento se encuentra delante de nosotros, lo que tenemos
ante nosotros, en el futuro. Adviento es un tiempo que nos
hace mirar hacia adelante al final de los tiempos, cuando
Cristo vuelve en gloria. Por lo tanto, Adviento nos hace
mirar hacia adelante, no atrás, que "manejamos" hacia
adelante cada vez más cerca de la segunda venida de
Cristo.
Observemos como las lecturas de la Sagradas
Escrituras en este primer domingo de Adviento no miran
al pasado, sino al futuro. En la primera lectura,
escuchamos a Dios hablando a través del profeta Jeremías
que vienen días cuando aparecerá el Señor. Jeremías
instruye a la gente a mirar con interés el día en que Dios
cumplirá su promesa de salvación. Del mismo modo, en
la segunda lectura, escuchamos a San Pablo exhortando a
los Tesalonicenses a vivir sus vidas irreprensibles para la
venida de nuestro Señor Jesús. San Pablo no apunta a los
Tesalonicenses a mirar hacia atrás, sino más bien, adelante
con interés al regreso de Cristo en gloria. Por último, el
Evangelio de Lucas es muy claro al señalar nuestra
atención y enfoque hacia delante, no hacia atrás. En el
Evangelio de Lucas, Jesús nos dice que debemos mirar, no
al pasado, sino al futuro, hacia la venida de Cristo. En esta
imagen hermosa, vemos una pintura titulada Juicio Final
por Frans Francken el Joven (1608). Frans Francken II
representa maravillosamente el tema de las lecturas bíblicas de hoy y el enfoque de la temporada de Adviento en general.
Adviento no es mirar atrás en el tiempo, sino mirar hacia el fin del mundo y el Juicio Final, ya que todavía están por
delante de nosotros. Este espacio de tiempo entre la primera venida de Cristo y Su segunda venida en gloria es dada a
nosotros para que decidamos si elegimos a Cristo o no. Adviento nos recuerda a todos, que Dios está cerca.
Este Adviento, el Leccionario se mueve al ciclo C. El ciclo C se dedica al Evangelio de Lucas. A partir de
Adviento, trate de leer 10 minutos de la Escritura del día, sobre todo el Evangelio de Lucas, con especial atención a la
narración de la infancia de Lucas. A continuación, pare y medite. Escuche lo que Dios le está diciendo de ese pasaje. Que
nuestra Santísima Madre María, Desatadora de Nudos, nos ayude con su cuidado maternal y San José ruegue por nosotros.

Kiedy jesteśmy w samochodzie, z każdej strony otaczają nas lusterka. Z przodu nad głową
mamy lusterko wsteczne, a także dwa lusterka boczne: po lewej i prawej stronie. Lusterka są
dla kierowcy bardzo przydatne – dzięki nim dobrze widać, co dzieje się za nami oraz po
bokach. Ale jazda samochodem nie polega tylko na patrzeniu w lusterko. Gdybyśmy próbowali
jeździć patrząc do tyłu, stwarzalibyśmy niebezpieczeństwo dla siebie i innych użytkowników
drogi. Podczas jazdy samochodem musimy patrzeć w przód. Owszem, należy patrzeć w
lusterka, aby wiedzieć, co się dzieje wokół nas. Jednakże nasza uwaga powinna być skupiona
głównie na tym, co dzieje się przed autem, z przodu.
Posłużyłem się przykładem z lusterkami, aby lepiej ukazać Wam wagę okresu
adwentowego. Dzisiaj po raz kolejny rozpoczyna się Adwent. Jest równocześnie początek
ogłoszonego przez papieża Roku Łaski. Może się wydawać, iż skupia się przede wszystkim na przeszłości.
Niektórzy katolicy sądzą, iż obchody Adwentu polegają na rozmyślaniu o minionych wydarzeniach. Jeśli ktoś tak
postrzega ten czas, jest jak kierowca patrzący w czasie
jazdy tylko w lusterko wsteczne. Tak nie można
kierować samochodem. Tak samo jest z
chrześcijańskim życiem, zwłaszcza w czasie
Adwentu.
Adwent nie polega na rozpamiętywaniu
przeszłości – to zachęta do patrzenia w przyszłość.
Przeszłość należy wspominać, tak jak należy patrzeć
w lusterka podczas jazdy. Ale nasza uwaga musi być
skupiona przede wszystkim na tym, co przed nami.: co
nastąpi w przyszłości. W czasie Adwentu spoglądamy
w przyszłość, aż po czasu kres, kiedy Chrystus
powróci w chwale. Adwent jest jak jazda
samochodem w przód, coraz bliżej do Drugiego
Przyjścia Pana.
Zwróćcie uwagę na to, że dzisiejsze czytania z
Pisma Świętego nie dotyczą przeszłości, lecz skupiają
się raczej na tym, co nastąpi. W pierwszym czytaniu,
Bóg (ustami proroka Jeremiasza) zapowiada, że
nastaną dni Pana. Prorok nakazuje ludziom
wyczekiwać dnia, w którym wypełni się Boża
obietnica zbawienia. Podobnie w drugim czytaniu św.
Paweł namawia Tesaloniczan, aby wobec rychłego
nadejścia Jezusa wiedli cnotliwe życie. Tesaloniczanie
nie mają patrzeć za siebie, lecz przed siebie: w
przyszłość, kiedy Chrystus powróci w chwale.
Wreszcie, temat patrzenia w przyszłość podejmuje
Ewangelia według św. Łukasza. W swoim obrazie pod
tytułem „Sąd Ostateczny” (1608 rok), Franz Francken
Młodszy przepięknie ukazał temat przewodni zarówno
dzisiejszych czytań, jak i całego okresu adwentowego.
Adwent nie jest podróżą w przeszłość, lecz w przyszłość, aż po czasu kres i Dzień Sądu Ostatecznego, które wciąż
przed nami. W obecnym czasie, pomiędzy pierwszym przyjściem Chrystusa a Jego Drugim Przyjściem w chwale,
musimy się poważnie zastanowić – wybieram Jezusa, czy nie? Adwent przypomina nam wszystkim: Chrystus jest
blisko.
W lekcjonarzu Kościoła rozpoczyna się Rok C, poświęcony Ewangelii według św. Łukasza. Zachęcam
wszystkich do czytania Pisma Świętego przez 10 minut dziennie, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Ewangelii
Łukasza. Potem, zamknijcie Biblię i zastanówcie się nad tymi słowami. Czego Bóg chce Cię nauczyć w danym
fragmencie? Postaraj się Go usłyszeć. Święta Maryjo Rozwiązująca Węzły, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece.
