If you’ve been in the church parlor anytime in the last
few weeks you probably noticed some distinct changes occurring. With the Governing Body’s enthusiasm and support we
are in the process of creating a chapel
space on the far side of the parlor to be
separated off by the movable wall. It
should be completed soon.
This newly arranged space will offer
a regularly available intimate setting for
such activities as: offering communion to
requesting individuals on non-communion
Sundays; praying with the pastor, others,
or individually; having a quiet place for reflection, or a private
conversation; and having special worship services as appropriate without the cost of heating or attempting to cool the
large sanctuary space.
This space will be configured so we can still arrange
chairs in its back portion to allow for a small group to sit in a
meeting circle. We still need to do some moving of pianos and
plants, some touch up painting, as well as add some treatments to some of the windows to complete the space. Feel
free to check out the space now and we’ll let you know when
it is truly finished so we can celebrate and enjoy it.

Choir Practice Reminder
Please join us on the following Sundays at 9:15 a.m—10 a.m. for choir practice: May 6,13; June 3, 17; July 1, 15, 22 led by Evie Morris. Typically the choir will
practice a selection and then share it during worship that same morning. Please join
us at 9:15 a.m. on these Sundays to make a joyful noise unto the Lord.
"Ragtime" cast, crew include 7 from Archwood
Five Archwood members will appear in the musical Ragtime, running for nine performances May 4-20 at Near West Theatre, 3606 Bridge Ave., Cleveland. Chris
Byrom, Hans Holznagel, Cocoa Price, Skipper Rankin and Erny Schwarz are
among 44 diverse cast members who will bring this Tony-winning musical to life.
Plus, Statia Rankin and Richard Morgan are on the backstage crew! Ragtime is a
grand and at times wrenching story about race, class, culture, power, conflict and
opportunity in early 20th-century America, totally relevant for today. Tickets can be
ordered at www.nearwesttheatre.org or by calling 216-961-9750 between 11 a.m.
and 4 p.m. weekdays. Cost is $8 (or $6 for children 12 and under, but parental
guidance is recommended; see the blog at the theater's website for information).
Spring Fling Dance
Mark your calendar with upcoming Archwood event information beginning with our Spring Fling Dance which will take place on Saturday, May 19th
from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. 6 –8pm, DJ Jozee; 8-9pm Karaoke.
Spread the word! All are welcome and admission is free. Food will be provided, so have your dinner at Archwood and work off a few pounds on the dance
floor afterwards! See you at this fun filled event. Special thanks to Dance
Committee members Carol Miller, Joeletta Akemon, Edwin Gabriel, Wayne
Holscott, Michael Bute, Jo Orlowski and Deb Wilson for making it happen,
clearly showing that many hands do make light work!
Food Drive for Brookside
The Annual Archwood Feed My Sheep Festival Food Drive is right
around the corner and will take place on Saturday,
June 2nd from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We are raising money
for the Brookside Hunger Center. As in the past we will
have a rummage sale on this day in the church Fellowship Hall, so start rummaging around for items to donate. We will also hold a prayer vigil for our community
in the sanctuary during the day. This year we will be
selling ice cream cones; and don’t forget to donate your delicious bakery goods
to delight the passer “buyers.” We need your help to make this event a success,
so please contact Carol Miller of the Programming Body or our church office

Archway Art and Craft Group
Would you like to learn new skills, Spend time in Fellowship, please
join us at the Archwood Art and Craft Group.
This a group of people that enjoy expressing their creative sides. We
work on projects of our own choosing. People are also willing to help you
learn a new skill. We have people who knit, crochet, quilt, sew and we even
have a bagpiper.
The group normally meets on the 3rd Saturday of the month in the fellowship hall from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, but in May we will be meeting on May 26.

Brooklyn Centre Bicentennial
Archwood will be participating in the Brooklyn Centre Bicentennial events. Archwood will serve as the
hub for the neighborhood House Tour that will take place on Saturday, August 11 between 2 and 5 p.m. On
Sunday, August 12, Archwood will be participating in the neighborhood parade. Our goal is to create a float
for the parade. Let one of the members of the Programming Body know if you would like to help with the float.
Other Bicentennial events include a garden walk on July 21 and 22, and a morning bicycling event on
August 11, ending with a brunch at Sals Restaurant. An upcoming Brooklyn Centre Beacon newsletter will
have a list of all neighborhood events, as well as include an Archwood UCC advertisement. Thank you to

The Programming Body
Brooklyn Centre Historical Neighborhood
Located on the near southwest side of Cleveland, on high ground north of Big Creek Valley, Brooklyn
Centre reflects the urbanization of America. The neighborhood's street patterns and buildings illustrate the
area's transition from rural hamlet to suburban center to inner city neighborhood. The Upper Flats creates the
eastern edge of the district while I-71defines the northern edge. Big Creek Valley and Brookside Park provide
the western border.
Brooklyn was settled in 1812 along an American Indian trail that broke off of the Lake Trail and followed the current alignment of Pearl Road until reaching the ridge edge of the prehistoric Lake Whittelsey.
The Township of Brooklyn was established in 1818. By 1830, Brooklyn Centre was a small trading post for
the largely rural township and by a generation later, it had grown into a hamlet with merchandising, manufacturing, trade and a residential area for Cleveland business people and industrialists. The semi-rural feel of the
community attracted residential development. After the Civil War, Brooklyn became a self sufficient village
with its own school system, fire department and constable. In 1894, the village was annexed by the City of
Cleveland, after which the neighborhood developed rapidly, spurred by new civic improvements such as
paved streets with utility lines, and the extension of police and fire protection into Brooklyn Centre.
By 1906 the streets were all laid out and most of the houses were constructed by 1915. The houses
are predominately situated on large one-half-acre lots. Archwood Avenue is a particularly good example of
the type of broad streets found in this district that have large houses with spacious lots. The variety of architectural styles in Brooklyn Centre include Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Bungalow. These residences are comparable to the best surviving examples in Cleveland, although Brooklyn
Centre is a more intact neighborhood than others around the city. In addition to the houses of the neighborhood, the district includes several churches and institutional buildings. Pearl Road is the historic commercial
center of the neighborhood, although only a few historic commercial buildings remain.
