Please read all the information and instructions contained in this booklet
with your parents. Complete the band camp application and registration
form and return them with the $50.00 registration fee to: ICC Band

Keep the rest of this booklet for your records along with the other
information you will be receiving from us concerning band camp.
Remember, read everything carefully and completely.
The Itawamba Community College Summer Band Camp’s purpose
is to provide high quality instruction for one week in the area related
to school band programs. The Camp requires that every camper
participate in one of the six concert bands of balanced instrumentation,
with the students classified by their ability on their instruments.
Additional experience may be gained by performing in ensembles such
as Jazz, Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion Ensembles. Also, the student
may choose to take lecture courses, guard classes, or electives from the
classes offered at this camp.
Camp Policy
Statements concerning camp policy and parental permission which
constitute a part of the agreement under which campers are enrolled at
Itawamba Community College are listed below.
I hereby grant ICC Band Camp permission to use any camp pictures
in which the likeness of the applicant appears in camp advertising or
publicity media.
In the event that I cannot be reached in an emergency, as determined
by the camp staff and/or health staff, I hereby give permission to the
physician selected by the camp to hospitalize, secure medical treatment
for and to order injection, surgery, or anaesthesia for the camper named
on this application. Christian Science parents may submit the authorized
Christian Science form in lieu of this permission. Such forms are to be
submitted and attached to this application.
All Students are required to register for band.
Participation in band, guard, drum major, and ensembles is based upon
both ability and achievement. All campers are encouraged to register
for one or more of these groups. However, where a reasonable balance
of instrumentation or parts is required for performance, auditions may
be necessary to select those campers most qualified to perform in any
ensemble type group. The ICC Band Camp is set up with six bands
and several ensembles of different levels so students will be placed in a
group of his/her ability.
All campers are required to remain in camp through the closing
concert.
These concerts are held on Friday and campers may depart at the
conclusion of the concert.
The use or possession of any form of narcotics, tobacco, and/or alcoholic
beverages is strictly prohibited. Violation of this rule will result in
immediate dismissal from camp and denial of any future band camp
admittance.
General Information
Fees: The basic fee for a resident camper at the ICC Summer Band Camp
is $225.00. This includes tuition, room, meals, T-shirt, and all activities.
The basic fee for a commuting camper is $200.00. This includes tuition,
two meals a day (lunch and dinner), T-shirt, and all activities.
Registration Fee: All applications must be accompanied by a nonrefundable $50.00 deposit which is applied toward the total fee. The
remainder of the fee is due on or before May 29th, 2015. Payments
may be made toward the total fee any time prior to registration but must
be postmarked on or before May 29th, 2015. The camp usually is full
much sooner than the cut-off date.
Registration Procedure: Registration will be held at the dorms
beginning at 1:00 p.m. and ending 4:00 p.m., Sunday afternoon, June
21st, 2015. You will receive your name tag, meal ticket, camp manual,
and T-shirt. We will have at least 4 stations for check-in to make the
waiting time much shorter this year.
Camp Meetings: All camp meetings are required. The first meeting
will be at 6:30 p.m., Sunday evening in the ICC Auditorium, where all
camp meetings will be held.
Dormitories: Campers are housed in modern air-conditioned dorms.
When you check into the dorm, there will be a $10.00 key deposit
which will be returned to you when you turn in your key. Please have
correct change at the time of check-in. If you lose your key there will
be a $25.00 replacement fee (the locks must be changed).
General Information
Music and Equipment: All band music is provided by the camp.
Campers provide their own musical instruments, accessories, guard and
drum major equipment. Pianos are provided for piano class. Guitars are
not provided for guitar class. The camp is not responsible for damage or
loss of personal property.
Auditions: Placement in bands and for chairs is done by audition.
Instrumental auditions are held Sunday, June 21st, 2015 starting at 2:00
p.m. Each camper will be required to audition. Campers will be
asked to play a few scales and sight-read. Piano, bass, guitar, and drum
set auditions for Jazz Band participants will be held backstage in the
auditorium after your regular audition. Results will be announced at
the Camp Meeting, Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Jazz band
results will be posted Monday morning at the camp office.
Activities: An activity has been planned for each night of camp from
8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. All campers are required to participate in these
activities. Activities are: Field Night, Talent and Guest Concert, Dance,
and Ensemble Concerts. Thursday night is also a camper performance
night. Following the dinner break, the woodwind, brass, concert
percussion, guitar, and jazz bands will perform in the Auditorium.
Starting at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning, the following groups will
perform for field exhibition in the gym: Guard, Dance, Marching
Percussion, Indoor Performance and Drum Major classes.
FRIDAY FINAL BAND CONCERTS:
1:00 p.m. Bronze, Silver, and Gold Bands perform in the Davis Event
Center
2:30 p.m. White, Blue, and Red Bands perform in the Davis Event
Center
Class Offerings
1. Select the classes you would like to take from the periods offered
below. (Consult Course Descriptions on the preceding pages for
an explanation of the courses).
2. Enter the class name, hour’s credit, and code on the registrar’s form
in the correct period.
3. Two hour courses such as: Guard Routine Class (2nd and 3rd
period), and Jazz Band (4th and 5th period) take up two periods.
Do not select another class during the second hour.
4. Guard members are required to take 1st period Foundations of
Movement when taking a routine class 2nd and 3rd period.
5. Percussionists are required to take percussion fundamentals 4th
period when taking marching percussion 2nd and 3rd periods.
6. The Drum Major program is three periods (1st, 2nd, and 3rd).
Beginning Drum Major is 5th period only for those wanting to
learn drum major skills for future auditions.
7. Your band director must approve the classes you intend to take and
you cannot change them unless your band director approves the
change.
8. Codes: A = course recommended for all campers
H = course recommended for high school campers
1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 = the period the class is offered
Course Descriptions
Band - Six (6) full concert bands with 12 expert directors with fun and
exciting music. Required for all campers.
Beginning Dance Class - Learn basic dance steps and dance the night
away. For students with little or no dance experience.
Beginning Drum Major - Designed for campers with no drum major
experience, this course teaches the basic skills needed to build a
foundation for those wishing to be future drum majors. This course is
only offered 5th period.
Beginning Drum Major Mace - This class is offered to students who
are interested in learning the basic fundamentals of spinning Mace.
Students must bring their own Mace to camp. This class is offered 4th
period only.
Beginning Guard - If you are interested in auditioning for your schools
color guard but have no experience spinning, this is the class for you.
This class caters to beginners only and will cover guard fundamentals
on flag. Students must bring their own equipment to camp. This class
will be offered 1st period only.
Beginning Guitar Class - Guitar for beginners. Learn the basic chords
and how to play the guitar.
Beginning Marching Band Class - Designed for campers with no
marching experience, this course teaches the basic skills needed to build
a foundation for those about to enter high school marching band.
Beginning Piano Class - Piano for beginners. Learn the keyboard and
proper hand position to give you a start on learning to play piano. Class
is limited to 12 students a period.
Beginning Weapons - This class is for beginners only. Students will
learn the basic fundamentals required to help them further develop their
weapon skills. Rifles and Sabers will be used and the students must
bring their own equipment to camp.
Conducting Class I - Designed for campers with no conducting
experience, this course teaches the basic skills of conducting.
Course Descriptions
Conducting Class II - Designed for campers with some knowledge of
conducting, this course teaches the basic skills needed to conduct any
size ensemble.
Daily Practice Routine - Campers will follow and complete the
Breathing Gym DVD, and will learn tips for developing good practice
habits.
Dance Class - Learn dance steps and dance the night away. For students
with some dance experience.
Drum Major - Intensive training for Drum Majors. Sharpen your
conducting, vocal, and leadership skills. This Drum Major program is
for those students that are going to be Drum Majors at their school next
year. This program is 3 periods a day.
Drum Major Mace - If you are already a drum major with mace
experience, this is the class for you. This is not a beginner class and you
must have your own Mace at camp. This class is offered 5th period only.
Drum Set - An introduction to multiple techniques and musical styles as
appropriate to the trap set. This course will be divided in different levels
according to student’s experience level on drum set. It is not required
but it is encouraged to bring a small drum set if enrolling in this class.
This class is for all students interested.
Ear Training - Develop better intonation and awareness of playing in
tune based on using Solfege (do, re mi, etc...).
Ensembles - Perform in one of the many smaller ensembles based
on a given instrument or instrument group: Percussion, flute, clarinet,
saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba/euphonium.
Foundations of Movement - Recommended for all band/guard
members, this class explores basic techniques of movement utilized in
marching band and indoor units with an emphasis on body alignment.
Wear clothes you can easily move in. This class is only offered 1st
period.
Course Descriptions
Fundamentals of Rhythm - A fundamental approach to counting
rhythm. Learn a specific approach or system of counting to help with
reading music.
Guard Routine Class - In this class, students will learn a routine to
perform at the end of camp. In order to fully benefit each student, a
screening will take place on the first day of camp in order to place
everyone in the appropriate level class. This is highly recommended for
all color guard students from beginning to advanced level. This class is
offered 2nd and 3rd periods.
Guitar Class - Designed for guitar students with some experience
playing. Learn advanced chord playing skills. This class will perform
for camp. The camper must have a six string acoustic guitar for this
class.
Improvisation - Introduction to basic chords, scales, solo playing, and
how to use them in jazz improvisation.
Indoor Performance (brass/woodwind) - Designed for campers with
at least a year of marching experience, this class develops musical and
visual rehearsal techniques of an indoor marching/performing ensemble.
Available for brass and woodwind players only. Marching instruments
required.
Introduction to Finale - Designed for all campers, this class gives
students a first look and introduction to the Finale Notation Software.
Strategies on how to get started and avoiding pitfalls.
Introduction to Pyware - Designed for all campers, this class gives
students a first look and introduction to the Pyware drill-writing software.
Strategies on how to get started and avoiding pitfalls.
Jazz Band (2 hr. course) - Play Jazz in a band that swings! Jazz Band
instrumentation is: Alto, Tenor, and Baritone Saxophones, Trumpets,
Trombones, Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar, and Drum Set.
Leadership Class - Develop your leadership skills and qualities through
certain team building exercises and activities. Learn how to lead and
what it takes to be an effective leader. Recommended for high school
students.
Course Descriptions
Marching Band Class - Designed for campers with some marching
experience, this course emphasizes both the basic skills needed to build
a strong marching band fundamentals foundation, and the skills needed
to help build leaders on the marching field.
Marching Percussion Class - All percussionists at the camp form
marching percussion sections. Students learn warm-ups, playing
techniques, and a drum feature for performance on the final day of
camp. Recommended for high school campers.
Music Theory I - Designed for all campers, this course is an introduction
to the basic elements of music, scales, harmony, notation and symbols.
Music Theory II - Designed for high school campers, this course is an
in-depth study of the basic elements of music, scales, harmony, melody
and form.
Percussion Class - An introduction to the various percussion instruments.
Mallet keyboards, drum set, timpani, snare drum, and Latin percussion
instruments are covered in hands on lecture and demonstration.
Percussion FUNdamentals - Develop your basic drumming skills by
learning rudiments, techniques and exercises. This course is divided into
three levels and is recommended for students enrolled in marching
percussion class.
Piano Class - Designed for students with some experience on piano.
Campers will learn more advanced playing skills in this course. Class is
limited to twelve campers per period.
Course Descriptions
Steel Drum band - Learn how to play steel pans and the various
percussion instruments that make up the “engine room.” Students will
learn to play these instruments as well as perform for the other campers.
Recommended for all students.
Weapons - For campers with experience spinning saber or rifle, this is the
class for you. You will learn skills to help develop your technique. This
is not for beginners and each camper must bring their own equipment
to camp.

Support Services
Snack Stations The will be stations set up on campus and in the dorms
for campers to purchase snacks and drinks throughout the week.
Bookstore The bookstore is open every day for the camper to purchase
personal items, souvenirs, gifts and clothing. Bookstore hours are from
8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Food Services Meals are provided by Sodexho Food Services and will
be served in the ICC Cafeteria. Delicious and nutritional meals are
served by the professional food staff. Campers are issued name tags
upon registration which are used as a meal ticket when eating.
Laundry All dorms are equipped with washers and dryers if the camper
needs to do laundry during the week. The cost is $1.50 to wash and
$1.25 to dry.
Counselors Band camp counselors are comprised of college students
under the direction of the camp director and band director’s staff.
Staff The staff is led by experienced professionals who carefully
supervise all portions of a camper’s experience while at camp.
Health Care Northeast Mississippi Medical Center and Gilmore
Hospital have clinics in Fulton. Campers must have their own medical
insurance coverage.
Recreation The ICC campus has a recreation area with basketball
courts, tennis courts, and a softball field for the camper’s enjoyment.

Telephone Messages to the campers may be relayed through the Band
Camp Office: (662) 862-8305. The college switchboard is open from
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. That number is 862-8000.
Security Officers are on duty 24 hours a day to help the campers and
provide security for them. In the event of an emergency call (662) 8628318 or (662) 862-8300 for campus emergency services.
A Typical Day at Camp starts with the camper waking up and going to
breakfast about 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. All campers attend first period class
at 7:30 a.m. Devotion will be offered to those who do not schedule a 1st
period class. It will be held at 8:00 a.m. each morning. All campers have
an hour and a half of band starting at 8:30 a.m. The camper may have
a 2nd period class at 10:00 a.m., and/or a 3rd period class at 11:00 a.m.
and then go eat lunch. At 1:30 p.m., it’s back to band rehearsal for an
hour and a half. At 3:00 p.m., the camper may have a 4th period class
and at 4:00 p.m., the 5th period classes meet. Then it’s dinner break
until 6:00 p.m. and then another hour of band rehearsal. All campers
meet in the auditorium at 7:15 p.m. for the Camp Meeting where mail
is given out and announcements are made. From 8:00 p.m. until 10:00
p.m., we have our activities which are planned to entertain the campers.
Curfew is at 10:30 p.m. and campers go to sleep so they can get up early
the next day and do it all again.
Visitation Parents, relatives, and friends are invited to attend the Friday
Field Exhibition and Final Concerts. Visitors should report to the Camp
Office upon arrival on campus and we will give you a name tag and help
find the camper(s) to be visited. Campers will not be allowed to leave
class for a visit unless it is an emergency.
