For the University of Florida College of Dentistry, 2006-07 was an eventful year. We
experienced unprecedented challenges, tremendous successes and new opportunities that will
shape our college for years to come.
A very tough 2007 legislative budgeting session resulted in budget shortfalls statewide. As
a result, we have tightened our belts as a university and as a college, and it appears the 2007-08
legislative budget cycle may also be a tight one — resulting in even more dramatic budgetary
shortfalls and decreased state support for the college next year.
State support for higher and professional education has been consistently diminishing,
and we must constantly strive to improve the efficiencies of our clinical and business
enterprises. Simultaneously, we have experienced the greatest demand for dental education
in the college’s history.
Recruiting and retaining faculty to teach the state’s future dentists and providing facilities
conducive to learning and patient care is critical. We’ve made significant headway over the
last several years in renovating our outdated classrooms and clinics, but we have much left
to do. We’re also exploring the possibility of adding a west wing to our existing building to
accommodate expansion of the college’s D.M.D. program and clinical enterprise — a daunting
prospect given the current budget climate.
Yet, the college has been fortunate in the strong private support it receives. One example of
that support is the innovative public-private partnership with the Naples Children and Education
Foundation, which funded the college’s newest community-based clinic to be built on the
Collier County campus of Edison College in partnership with CHS Healthcare. This unique
collaboration will result in the provision of much-needed dental care to at-risk children and
special needs patients in Collier County and will serve as a model for future educational and
clinical programs.
Florida Tomorrow, the seven-year capital campaign for the University of Florida, officially
kicked-off in 2007 following a two-year silent phase. I’m pleased to report we’re well on our
way to reaching our goal of $15 million. The monies raised during the capital campaign will
support faculty endowments and continued improvements to our physical plant and programs.
Your support for the campaign during this time of diminishing state support is critical to the
future of excellence in dental education for our state.

that excellence in dental care demands excellence in
scientific discovery, dental care delivery and education
Educating for Tomorrow
Since entering its first class in 1972, UFCD has graduated 2,096 dentists and 910 dental
specialists. Typically, more than 90 percent of the college’s graduates remain in Florida to
practice, and nearly a quarter of the state’s practicing dentists are UF College of Dentistry
graduates.
During 2006, the college continued its efforts to improve its D.M.D. clinical curriculum
through development of a general practice model of care that includes interdisciplinary
treatment planning. This has resulted in the launch of screening and multi-disciplinary
treatment planning clinics, designed to streamline patient screening and treatment planning
for the student clinics. Faculty members from each of the dental specialty areas serve in
the treatment-planning clinic as complements to the general dentistry faculty to provide a
comprehensive teaching and patient care environment.
These changes are the first significant effort in a major restructuring of the undergraduate
clinical curriculum from a specialty-based model to a model of comprehensive general dental care.
D.M.D. Program
More than 1,500 applications were received for the 80 openings in the college’s D.M.D.
class entering in 2007. This represents a jump in applications of more than 160 percent since
2001, a trend that is in-sync with tremendous growth in the number of dental admissions
applications nationwide.
Advanced and Graduate Education
Advanced and graduate education at the college has grown from six programs with an
enrollment of 36 in 1979 to 12 accredited programs and four distinct fellowships (16 total
programs) with an enrollment of 103 students in 2006-2007. In addition to these 16 programs,
two graduate programs are offered in conjunction with other colleges (Interdisciplinary Ph.D.
Program; M.S. or a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering with specialization in dental
biomaterials, biomimetics, and tissue engineering). In 2006, two of the College of Medicine’s
Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program (IDP) students mentored through the Department of Oral
Biology received their Ph.D. degrees. Currently, the college has 36 M.S. students and granted
28 M.S. degrees in 2006-07.

D.M.D. Scholarship Awards 2006-07
Marshall M. & Jeannette Butts Dewitt Scholarship Fund: Dental
students with financial need who display academic achievement and
motivation are eligible to apply for the scholarship. A total of $87,000 was
awarded to 29 students.
Andrew Abel Dental Scholarship Fund: Dental students who require
financial assistance and display excellence in their academic and clinical
endeavors are eligible to apply for the scholarship assistance. A total of
$2,500 was awarded to one student.
Krisia & Steve Rhoden Memorial Scholarship Fund: Students in
the College of Dentistry, with special consideration to students from the
Caribbean nations, including but not limited to Jamaica, are eligible to apply
for the Rhoden Scholarship. One student was awarded a total of $7,000.
William T. & Jackie C. Reid Scholarship in Dentistry Fund:
Needy dental students with high scholastic averages are eligible for the
Reid Scholarship. One student received an award of $6,900.

Serving People Today
Through the Statewide Network for Community Oral Health, the college extended low-cost
dental care to Florida’s vulnerable, indigent and special needs residents. Nearly 75 percent of the
college’s patient base is at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. Through collegeowned and partner clinics in the network, the college has become one of the largest providers of
low-cost, comprehensive, state-of-the-art dental care in Florida, providing nearly 4.5 percent of all
indigent care to Florida’s residents during 101,595 patient visits in 2006-07.
The newest addition to the Statewide Network for Community Oral Health (see map, next
page) was established with the formal private-public partnership between the college and the Naples
Children and Education Foundation (NCEF). NCEF donated $4 million to the college, which
received a state match in the amount of $4 million, for the construction of a world-class pediatric
dentistry program and facility on the Edison College campus. The foundation also provided $1.5
million in support of start up operational expenses for the clinic, which, when it opens fall of 2008,
will greatly expand the delivery of clinical services in Collier County to at-risk children.
In addition to service through college clinics, UF dental students and faculty provide free dental
care during college-sponsored foreign aid trips each year to the Dominican Republic, Ecuador,
Costa Rica, and Honduras. Typically oriented to provide urgent and preventive dental care, these
humanitarian efforts serve hundreds of people living in isolated areas under primitive conditions
who would not otherwise receive dental care. Students, faculty and private dentists who volunteer to
participate come away with an awestruck appreciation for their patients and profession.
Physical Plant Improvements and Expansion
To better serve the college’s education, research and patient care missions, the college
continues to focus on the renovation of existing and reassigned space and exploration of the idea
of construction for a new west wing expansion. The footprint for a proposed west wing expansion
is now included on the university’s Campus Master Plan, and development activities are underway
to fund preliminary visioning for the expansion with the goal of contracting architectural
renderings and construction cost projections. Once this is achieved, the college expects to pursue
private and public funding sources for the west wing expansion project.

Discovering for the Future
The college is ranked No. 6 of 56 dental schools in terms of federal funding. This marks
the seventh consecutive year the college was ranked within the top 10 dental schools receiving
federal funding, and fuels a nationally-recognized oral health research enterprise emphasizing
infectious diseases in dentistry, bone biology, pain and neurosciences, and translational
research to improve clinical dental care.
Recognizing clinical and translational research requires an interdisciplinary mix of
people examining the same problems from different perspectives and bringing the most
advanced genetic and molecular tools to bear on improving patient health, the college
relies on its robust basic science research enterprise as the underpinning on which to build
clinical and translational research efforts. With the support of a National Institute of Dental
and Craniofacial Research/National Institutes of Health research infrastructure award,
the college has recruited seven new research faculty and has developed a faculty research
pipeline program to mentor clinical faculty in preparation for submitting competitive grant
applications.
This strategy strengthens ties between the college’s research on systemic and oral diseases
and the genetics and diabetes research underway elsewhere in the Health Science Center. It
builds “critical mass” within the department of oral biology’s areas of infectious diseases,
molecular immunology and cell biology and enhances the college’s research activities in the
areas of health disparities, caries, periodontal diseases, oral cancers, xerostomia, and pain.

Total “I had the privilege of a half-time teaching appointment at the UF College of Dentistry for seven
years. This was a wonderful experience to end my 47-year career in dentistry. In the ensuing
years at UFCD, I observed a strong program improve each year as evidenced by the scores on
the National Dental Boards and the pass rate on the Florida Dental Board. To help continue the
progress made by Dean Dolan and the faculty, my wife and I donated appreciated real estate to
endow a professorship. Working with Cathy Jenkins and Bruce Delaney of the UF Foundation

“When I heard the Department of Periodontology was doing a major renovation of the graduate clinics, I wanted to help. One of my residency memories was the operatories we had to use for surgeries.
They were small, cramped and inadequate. So, when I was offered the chance to equip one of the
rooms for periodontal surgery of all types, I took the opportunity. I decided to pledge $100,000 over a
5-year period. Now the question was how to pay the pledge. My investment advisory at Smith Barney
recommended using some stocks in my portfolio. Due to changes in the stock market, I would have a
large capital gains fee if I sold the stock, but by donating it I received a tax deduction for a charitable
contribution instead. Therefore, I covered my yearly pledge by turning over some of the stock to the
UF Foundation. It is a plan that has worked well for me and could for others too. Ask Cathy Jenkins for
help. It is a real win-win way of helping UFCD and your own tax burden as well.”
