Juan Gallego-Coín Recital Pianist www.gallego-coin.com Juan Gallego-Coín was born in Granada, Spain. “Poet of the piano” “This rising star of the piano arrives in London” “A first level artistic temperament” “Mighty talent” “The Alhambra’s pianist” “One of Spain’s most important young pianists” “When he plays, poetic elegance flows from the piano” He gave his first recital at the age of 9 and has since had a very active artistic career that involved a number of awards, distinctions and performances at legendary halls and venues around the world. He studied with Aquiles Delle-Vigne, a disciple of Claudio Arrau, and worked under the tutelage of Alicia de la Rocha, Elisabeth Leonskaja and Joaquín Achúcarro. At the age of 11, he was awarded the musical composition prize of Andalucía by the Community Tourism Council of Granada. At the age of 18, he received the “Young Interpreter medal” by the Jeunesses Musicales Institution, as well as outstanding accolades from both the public and critics for his interpretation of G. Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. In 1995, he won the Young Soloist contest, by the City Orchestra of Granada (OCG) for his interpretation of “Nights in the Gardens of Spain” by Manuel de Falla conducted by Josep Pons. This performance was recorded by RNE-Classics and received excellent reviews. In 2007, he was honoured as the best young Artist by the Community Council of Andalucía “Granada Joven”. Gallego-Coín is considered one of the foremost artists in Spain recognised for his versatility as both Recital Pianist and Composer. He has performed in important Halls around the world like the SouthBank Centre & St. John’s, Smith Square (London), Konzerthaus (Berlin), Boesendorfer-Hall (Vienna), Auditorium Ravel (Saint Jean de Luz), Kioi & Funabori Halls (Tokyo), Palace of the Culture (Algiers), San Francisco Theatre (Campeche, Mexico), Auditorium Manuel de Falla (Granada), Maria Cristina Theatre (Malaga). Some of the orchestras he has performed with include the City Orchestra of Granada, The Chamber Orchestra of Murcia, The Soloists of the Covent Garden under the baton of renowned conductors like Josep Pons, Salvador Mas, Nic Raine. Juan has been invited to represent musically Spanish Embassies and other country Embassies across the world as well as a number of prestigious institutions like the Loewe Foundation, the Embassy of Japan, the Cervantes Institute, Circuito Andaluz of Music, Caja Granada, the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation, the Foundation El Legado Andalusí, Festival Andalou, Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, Festival Internacional de Campeche and companies like CarreraYCarerra (Tokyo), Casa Decor, the Executive Lounge. 1 | Bio juan@gallego-coin.com The Recital Pianist: Career Highlights 1 March 2010 (Chopin’s birthday) Juan performs Chopin’s a selection of Mazurkas & Ballades 1-4 in celebration for the 200 years from Chopin’s birth (Museo de la Memoria de Andalucía, Granada, Spain). 2 January 2010 Juan performs Chopin’s Piano Concerto no. 2 accompanied by the Soloists of the Covent Garden, thus formally opening the cycle of celebrations for the 200 years from Chopin’s birth (Granada) October 2009 Juan makes his London Debut at the Purcell Room, SouthBank Centre Programme Excerpt: This rising star of the piano arrives in London offering a new interpretation of Albeniz’s Suite Iberia. More flexible in its different rhythms, “The concert combined Enrique Granados’ “Quejas o la Maja y the different elements of the el Ruiseñor” from the Suite “Goyescas” with the first two books piece are interwoven with subtle of Isaac Albéniz’s masterpiece “Suite Iberia” and Gallego-Coín’s mastery. Gallego-Coín’s Iberia own compositions Suite “Alhambra” (London premiere) and Suite is a new Iberia for a new “Twilight in Regent’s Park” (World premiere). He October 2008 Juan is invited to perform for the prestigious “Classical Young Stars International” series at the Konzerthaus in Berlin. April 2007 rendered the quintessentially Spanish intensity and playfulness of Albéniz’s dances and evoked his native Granada in his own pieces, from the subtle melancholy of “Dos Nocturnos” to the ethereal beauty of “Twilight in Regent’s Park”. He has been accurately described as “a poet of the piano”: the emotion he infuses in his interpretations is pure poetry, transmitted delicately but decisively. His vision of the passionate poetry of these Spanish contemporary masters received a warm ovation by the audience at the Queen Elizabeth Hall” During his Second tour in Japan Juan performed at the prestigious Kioi Hall in Tokyo, a performance attended by members of the Japanese Imperial family and praised enormously by critics and the public. ● ● ● “Prince of the piano” ● ● ● September 2005 During his First tour in Japan Juan performed at the Funabori Hall (Tokyo) and the Toyota Hall in Yokohama during the World Festa Festival. With his Poesía de la ● ● ● Alhambra (Poetry of the Alhambra) recitals that included music “Poet of the piano” inspired by the Alhambra (by Albéniz, Falla, Barrios, Granados, ● ● ● Debussy, Gallego-Coín) he won the hearts and minds of classical music loving audiences across Japan. 2004 Juan plays Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto no 1 with the City Orchestra of Granada (OCG) conducted by Salvador Mas, a performance that received excellent reviews. 2003 Juan interprets and conducts the “Concerto” by Manuel de Falla for the 25th anniversary of the homonymous Auditorium in Granada, a performance recorded by Radio National Espaňa-Classic. 2000 Juan performs a concert celebrating the life of the world famous poet Federico García Lorca in the García Lorca Park; attended by 3000 people, televised and viewed live across the World ( on CNN, TVE, Tele 5, Canal+). 2 | Bio juan@gallego-coin.com The Composer & Director: Significant Contributions Juan’s career also spans across composing. In 2005 he composed "Andalucia Será", a tribute to the cohabitation of Arabic, Sephardic, Gypsy and Western cultures in Spain for centuries. “Andalucía Será” represents a cross-cultural experience using various different instruments, from the Piano and the Violin, to the Laud, the Kanun, the Darbuka and the Spanish Guitar to reflect the sounds of those diverse cultures. “Andalucia Sera” was performed live in the 2nd Fiesta de las Culturas in Granada. In 1999, he composed the hymn of the historical town Santa Fe released for the anniversary of the Capitulations. Gallego-Coín founded with Mr. Federico Mayor Zaragoza (ex General Director of UNESCO) the ensemble "Culture of Peace", which made its debut performance in 2008 with the Piano Concerto no 12 by W.A. Mozart. Juan Gallego-Coín is the founder and Director of the “Fiesta de las Culturas”, a festival of International reputation which attracts World class performers every 2nd of January in Granada.
