Brighton’s North Laine area and the positive,

the event that the course is full, you will be
contacted to advise you of this and to discuss

BENEFIT-RELATED DISCOUNTS
If you are claiming a course fee discount
because you are in receipt of benefits (not all
courses or benefits apply; see page 9) then
you will need to enrol in person and provide
evidence of the benefit. This can be a letter
dated within the last three months confirming
the benefits are in your name, or a bank
statement in your name showing the receipt of
the benefit within the last three months.
IDENTIFICATION
We must see identification for all learners at
enrolment.
Please note that residents from outside the UK
will need to bring their Passport or National ID
Card if they are from the EU. Residents from
outside the EU will need to bring their Passport,
National ID Card, Home Office papers and any
other relevant documentation in order for us to
conduct a fee assessment.

PAYING FOR A COURSE
COURSE FEES EXPLAINED
FEEs FULL COST COURSES
Under each of our courses we have displayed
the fees. The costs and whether or not you have
to pay for your course depend on your age,
circumstances and previous educational history.
Please use this guide to find out which category
applies to you.

available for courses over £200 and longer than
10 weeks in duration. The fee listed for each
course includes tuition, registration and exam
fees.
A CATEGORY A
If you are not claiming any benefits you will need
to pay the full cost of the course.
1 CATEGORY 1
If you will be aged 19-23 when your course begins
and are studying towards your first full Level 2 or 3
course, you will not have to pay any fees.
B CATEGORY B
If you are claiming Housing Benefit, Council Tax
Benefit, Income Support or Pension Credit you
pay this fee.
C CATEGORY C
2 CATEGORY 2
If you will be aged 19 or over when your
course begins, studying at Level 2 or below,
AND are unemployed AND claiming benefits
AND completing the course to improve your
employability, you will not have to pay any fees.

If you are aged 19 or over when your course

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
GOVERNMENT FUNDED COURSES
FULL PAYMENT DISCOUNT
If you are interested in studying a Government
funded course but feel you would have difficulty
meeting the costs, you may be eligible to apply
for financial support from the College. Successful
applicants may receive help with the cost of
fees, equipment and childcare. You do not have
to be on benefits to receive financial support.
Many successful applicants are working but have
a low household income.
The College operates a 5% tuition fee discount
on full-time and part-time Further Education
courses of longer than 10 weeks duration if the
learner pays in full at the time of enrolment (to
encourage full payment).
Guidelines and application forms are available
online in the Financial Assistance section of
www.ccb.ac.uk or from the Student Centres at
Pelham Street and City College East Campus.
We have tried to make the application process
as simple as possible but please be aware you
will need to provide us with information and
evidence regarding your financial situation in
order to demonstrate your eligibility.
The funds we have are limited and are offered
at the discretion of the College on a first come,
first served basis. The deadline for applying for
courses starting this September is 4pm on 26th
August 2016. Please note that not all courses are
eligible for support. If you are planning to study
a full cost course you cannot apply for financial
support.

Please note that this is for Further Education
level programmes (excluding students aged
19+ who wish to study and already hold a Level
3 qualification and students aged 24 and over
studying at Level 3 and above whether funded
by a student loan or otherwise) and Home/
EU students only paying their own fees. Full
cost course, Higher Education and International
student fees are not subject to any early
settlement discount.
PART PAYMENT AGREEMENTS
If a course is more than £200 and 10 weeks in
duration you can set up an instalment plan of
up to three months. This will be for three equal
instalments, the first payable on enrolment.
Instalment plans are not available for companies
that are sponsoring learners.
If you withdraw, before all instalments have
been received, we will still require all future
instalments to be paid and will seek to recover
any outstanding instalments if necessary.
ADVANCED LEARNER LOANS
REFUNDS
Funding for Level 3 or 4 courses is no longer
available for students aged between 19 and 23
who already have a full Level 3 qualification, or
for any student aged 24 and over studying at
Level 3 or higher. This means you will need to
pay the full cost of the course. However, you can
apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with
these costs.
A refund will be given if a course has been
cancelled by the College and no suitable
alternative can be found. Should you enrol but
do not start the course or withdraw within the
first 2 weeks of the start date of the course a
refund will be given but an administration charge
of £30 will be applied. If you withdraw after 2
weeks of commencement of the course you
will still be liable for all outstanding fees that are
owed to the College. Queries related to refunds
can be emailed to our Finance Department at
the following e-mail address: finance@ccb.ac.uk.

marked.
The Advanced Learner Loan is easy to apply
for, doesn’t take your household income into
account and doesn’t involve a credit check.
For learners who do not already hold a full
Level 3 qualification, fee remission is subject to
qualification eligibility. If the qualification is not
entitlement eligible, you will need to pay the
full cost of the course. For more details contact

WHAT IF MY EMPLOYER IS PAYING?
If your employer is paying for your course fees
they will need to complete the Contract of
Sponsorship form which can be downloaded
from www.ccb.ac.uk. Completed forms can
either be handed in when you enrol or can be
sent to:

Once the Contract of Sponsorship is received
you will not be required to pay any fees at
enrolment.

WHAT BENEFITS WILL I RECEIVE IF I
SPONSOR AN EMPLOYEE?
Where a learner’s employer takes responsibility
for payment, a discount of 5% is offered on tuition
fees if full payment is received at the time of
enrolment.
Once you have agreed to sponsor a learner, we
will send you a sponsor pack, which includes an
employer charter and a fee account statement
including methods of payment. We will offer
regular feedback on progress.
We offer customised courses in addition to
the offer set out in this course guide, including
delivery at your premises and a free training
needs analysis. For more details please contact
our commercial team - commercial@ccb.ac.uk.
Please note: 5% prompt payment tuition fee
discount does not apply to partially sponsored
learners or learners sponsored for Higher
Education courses.

THE CAREERS TEAM
Support staff form a vital part of the City
College community and are fully trained and
eager to assist you with any questions. We
understand that information can sometimes be
overwhelming, so don’t be daunted. Whether it
is financial support, enrolment queries or course

Our highly knowledgeable Careers Team are in

COLLEGE FACILITIES
The excellent teaching facilities at City
College are renowned as second to none,
allowing you to acquire essential skills in an
environment which replicates real workplace
settings. You can discover this in many
ways; for example, by learning new cooking
techniques in one of our industry standard
kitchens, by constructing a table using
our carpentry rig or working on one of our
advanced software packages in our state-ofthe-art Mac suites.
PLACES TO EAT

discover that everything is in place to help
make the most of your learning journey.
Our popular Coffee Stop on the First Floor
Mezzanine of Central Campus is a great place
to take a break or catch up and enjoy a delicious
Eros coffee. Vending machines are located at

a scenic setting close to Brighton Marina
and includes cutting edge dance and music
studios, a motor vehicle centre and top-class
sports and gym facilities.
We understand that studying can work up an
appetite, and so you will find refectories at the
Central and East Campuses, both subsidised
and offering fantastic variety. We regularly
feature specialist cuisines from around the
world, such as Indian, Thai and Spanish dishes.
Opening hours take account of busy lives and
study schedules, and both refectories are open
throughout the day, offering breakfast, lunch and
an early evening service.

ART STUDIOS
We are pleased to attract students from around
the country and beyond, drawn to our wellequipped workshops, complete with video
and photographic studios. Our highly regarded
department provides the ideal atmosphere
to study and be creative. Our Central Campus
contains an Art Shop selling subsidised art
supplies to suit student budgets.
DIGITAL DESIGN CENTRE
Our Digital Design Centre has three Mac-based
multimedia suites, a Mac-based Graphic Design
suite and a PC-based 3-D Multimedia suite with
motion capture. Facilities include a video studio
with Chromakey and lighting rig, plus other
equipment including digital video cameras,
recorders and digital SLRs. All rooms are fully
networked with email and internet access on
every machine.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE
Both of our campuses include a Learning
Resource Centre (LRC), with each LRC
containing materials and information relating to
all the courses taught at that particular campus.
With over 30,000 books, more than 300 current
periodicals and 15,000 DVDs available, you can
be sure that material support for your learning
experience is more than adequate. In addition,
we currently offer an extensive collection of
music CDs as part of our library service.
Our LRC IT facilities also provide essential
student support, with over 80 PCs at our
Central Campus and 30 at our East campus.
All machines have internet access, access
to online resources and various software
packages, including Photoshop and the
Microsoft Office suite.
There are five multi-functional devices in the
Central Campus LRC and one at East Campus.
These operate as printers (both black and white
and colour), photocopiers and flatbed scanners,
allowing you to process your work according
to your needs. The LRC is also a Wi-Fi zone,
so should you need to bring your laptop into
college, this is the place to gain internet access.
Allied to these physical resources, the LRC also
offers a valuable online presence, allowing you
to access e-books, websites and magazine
databases, from both inside College and home.
If you need them there are video, DVD and
audio playback facilities available. The LRC also
maintains and runs the CCB TV service where
programmes are recorded and made available
to watch via the College intranet, both on site
and from home.
PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIOS
As a photography student you will have the
advantage of using both top-of-the-range
digital facilities and traditional darkrooms.
We have three professional photography
studios stocked with state-of-the-art
equipment, including digital cameras, large
format printers, scanners and three designated
Mac suites.
CONSTRUCTION FACILITIES
As a construction student you will have the
opportunity to train in realistic environments,
preparing you for the wider world of work.
A life-sized carpentry rig and a specialist
multi-trades facility will provide you with
settings to gain the skills and experience
valued by employers in Sussex and beyond.
MUSIC STUDIOS
Located in a city which has a thriving music
scene, our music department benefits from
excellent industry-standard facilities, including
a Mac suite, Logic Pro Studio and three
professionally equipped recording booths.

If you have particular access needs, please
contact us prior to your enrolment interview.
If you can avoid it, please don’t wait until the last
minute to enrol. We want to welcome as many
students as possible to City College, and if you
delay, your course may already be full or might
have been cancelled owing to low enrolment.
ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY
We understand that adults’ lives are busy and
from time to time circumstances prevent you
from attending your course. Some courses,
however, will have a minimum attendance
requirement, particularly if they lead to a
qualification. This will be explained to you at the
start of your course.
You will be contacted if your attendance
becomes a concern and given help wherever
possible to catch up with any missed work.
Please respect your fellow course members
and your tutor by making every effort to get to
classes in good time for the start of lessons.
STUDENT ID
You will be required to have and display your
student ID card at all times when in College. You
will be given this card at enrolment, but if you
have enrolled online or by post or telephone,
you will need to visit the Student Centre or the
Learning Resource Centre before your course
begins to have your photograph taken and
card printed.

REFUND POLICY AND
COURSE CANCELLATIONS
Please be aware that although we understand
that personal circumstances can change, the
College operates a strict refund policy.
Refunds will only be given under the following
circumstances:
If a course has been cancelled by the College
and no suitable alternative can be found.
However, no refund will be given if classes are
cancelled due to circumstances beyond our
control.
Should you enrol but do not start the course
or withdraw within the first 2 weeks of the start
date of the course, a refund will be given but an
administration charge of £30 will be deducted. If
you withdraw after 2 weeks of commencement
of the course you will still be liable for all
outstanding fees that are owed to the College.
COURSE VIABILITY
SUBSTITUTE TUTORS AND VENUES
If a course is cancelled because minimum
enrolment numbers are not achieved or not
maintained throughout the course duration, you
may be offered the alternative of a reduction
in course hours for the same fee, transfer to
another course or request a pro-rata refund of
the fee.
If a tutor or venue becomes unavailable we will
do our utmost to inform you as soon as possible.
However, City College retains the discretion to
substitute alternative tutors and venues to those
listed without prior notice, either before the
course or during a course. In this case a refund
would not be provided.

leading to qualifications you are expected to
enter and take the examination/assessment at
the appropriate time.

We make every effort to ensure you are given
the opportunity to study at City College. If a
course is full your name can be entered on to a
waiting list. If the waiting list is sufficiently large
and additional tutors and facilities are available,
another course may be set up. In this case you
will be contacted by letter or telephoned with
the details.

We do understand that sometimes missing an
enrolment deadline is unavoidable. It may be
possible to accept enrolments after the start of
a course, subject to available places and course
content.

City College’s high-quality, professionallyfocused undergraduate courses equip students
with the skills needed to succeed in a variety of
industries. Our foundation degree courses blend
academic and work-related learning and cover
the key knowledge and skills employers are
looking for.
These qualifications are two-year courses which
prepare students for employment using a variety
of methods, including placements, industryrelated teaching and assessment and personal
and career planning. At the end of a foundation
degree students can choose to either graduate
and find employment or progress to a one
year top-up course, leading to a full Bachelor’s
Degree with Honours.
City College’s foundation degrees are validated
by the University of Brighton, a leading
professional university. Foundation degree
students can access some of the University’s
services, including membership of the
Students’ Union.
The College also offers one-year Access
to Higher Education diplomas in a range of
subjects. These courses are designed for
students aiming to progress to university but

An Access Course is a way of preparing you for studying at Higher Education level and an alternative
to the traditional route into undergraduate study. Our focus at City College is to encourage you

BUSINESS AND ENTERPRISE
On this course you will study a broad range of disciplines,
including Biology, Chemistry and IT. In addition you will
have the opportunity to choose a study topic to produce
an independent research project. This course is the ideal
introduction to a science related degree, providing a solid
foundation by which to eventually work in the Medical
Healthcare industry.
This course provides an opportunity to study various aspects
of business related topics, from Law and Marketing, to the
economic environment and entrepreneurship. The course
will enable you to make an informed decision about the
area of business you wish to study further, while developing

Soon to be introduced, this course focuses on global
and local issues which include pollution, climate change,
population growth and sustainable development. You will
receive the necessary knowledge to go on to study related
degree courses like Environmental Sciences, Geography,
Ecology or Conservation. Completing the Environmental
Sciences Access Course could be the ideal starting point for
a host of future careers, including working as a Environmental
Consultant, Environmental Education Officer, Environmental

PSYCHOLOGY
The aim of this course is to provide you with a full range of
opportunities to develop your reading, writing, numeracy
and ICT skills as well as teaching you how to do research,

Studying psychology from an academic perspective allows

This course is aimed at those who wish to pursue a career
as an employed or self-employed make-up artist. The course
will cover health and safety in the salon, cosmetic make-up

editorial, fashion), anatomy and physiology for make-up

NAIL TECHNOLOGY
An excellent choice of course if you wish to develop your skills
in this particular discipline, with a view to progress to other
courses offered, such as the Anatomy & Physiology Diploma,
Swedish Massage or Reflexology. However, the certificate
itself enables you to move into employment in a variety of
environments, such as leisure centres, health clubs, spas,
salons, cruise liners, hotels, or in a self-employed capacity at
home or overseas.
You will learn a range of range of skills, including how to
professionally administer manicures and pedicures, apply
gel nails and maintain salon health and safety; you will also

SPORTS MASSAGE
If you have little or no knowledge of massage but wish to
work in the sports industry then this course is a great starting
point. You will be taught anatomy and physiology, massage
techniques and routine, body analysis and sports/injury
management. On completion of the course, you may wish to
go directly into employment or possibly progress on to Level
4 Sports Massage, where you will be taught more advanced
techniques and gain further knowledge and practice in the
industry. In addition to the course, you will be required to
attend various sports activities/races/marathons to gain
additional practical log hours.
On this course you will increase your understanding of
advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological
principles of sports massage. You will acquire advanced
palpation skills and learn how to analyse posture and
movement while developing a wide range of advanced
massage skills and techniques to prevent and manage
injury. Lectures, demonstrations, project work, group work
and discussion are included. Attendance at various sports
activities for additional practical log hours is involved and
formal assessment is required. This course can prepare you for

This is the second year of the theory units towards the Level
3 Diploma. During this year, you will complete three theory
units and will increase your knowledge of electrical science as
well as regulations, and inspection and testing. By the end of
the year you will have a good understanding of inspection and
testing, electrical science and health and safety. The course is
a mixture of practical and theory. Upon successful completion,
you can progress on to Year 3.
The final year of the theory units towards the Level 3 Diploma.

INTRODUCTION
Develop your sewing skills and learn how to make your own
clothes using a commercial pattern. Each term you will work
towards making a new garment, starting with a skirt or pyjama
trousers for complete beginners. To start, you will be introduced
to the College sewing machines and shown how to thread up
and sew a variety of basic and more decorative seams.
On this dynamic course your specialist tutor will show
you how to draft a basic block pattern and how this can be
adapted to your own design. You will produce a sample of
your garment (toile) and learn how to fit, adjust and create
the finished piece. There will be some input on garment
construction but the main emphasis will be pattern cutting. It
is a fast moving, structured course which does require some
additional work at home.
The course will take you through the whole process of making
a garment including selecting and cutting the right size of
pattern, adapting patterns to fit your shape, cutting out fabrics,
sewing darts, pleats and seams, inserting zips, attaching
sleeves, collars, cuffs and stitching hems. Sewing machines
and overlockers are available to use, although you may find it
useful to have your own sewing machine at home to continue
your garment and practise techniques away from the class.

This is an era that is perhaps not as thoroughly examined as
the two periods of major global conflict; it was however, a time
of rapid social change. You will study for example, how Art
Deco and Modernism came to the fore, the spread of literacy
to the working class, via the launch of the affordable Penguin
paperback, and how advancement in birth control methods
aimed to free women from a continual cycle of child-bearing.
To begin you will be guided through the fascinating history
of Brighton in two classroom sessions. This is then
complemented by three field trips, on which you will visit
places of interest in this unique city, learning how Brighton
evolved from a small Georgian fishing town to the vibrant
seaside resort of today.

READ/WRITE COURSES
These courses are designed to focus on literacy
skills from beginner level for students with no
literacy through to intermediate level.
SELT PREPARATION COURSE
To gain British Citizenship, you are now required
to pass a SELT test. We run a 10 week evening
course (3 hours a week) to prepare you for the
test. The test can be taken in London (Croydon)
or Portsmouth.
The courses and prices listed in the following
tables are aimed at people who live
permanently in the UK. The ESOL Read/Write
course can support you with your literacy and
prepare you for the mainstream ESOL courses.
If you are interested in joining a course you will
need to attend one of our assessment sessions
to make sure you are entered at the right level.
Please be aware that attending an assessment
session does not guarantee you a place on a
course. This will depend on the spaces available,
your level and the times of the course.
Entry requirements: Proof of residence in the UK
needed (e.g. bank or utility bill statement) and
attendance at a placement testing session. You
