Cotter heads to home town to
compete with Team B.C. at Brier
Jim Cotter is throwing fourth rocks for Team Morris
JIM Cotter will be heading to his home
town of Kamloops as the reigning B.C.
champion for the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier.
Cotter’s team, with Olympic champion
John Morris calling the shots, and Kelowna
residents Tyrel Griffith and Rick Sawatsky
rounding out the team, were crowned B.C.
champions after a decisive victory over
Team Montgomery on February 9.
The victory sealed the team their purple hearts and the chance to compete as
Team BC at the Brier.
“Going to a Brier in my home town is
going to be a phenomenal feeling,” said
Cotter.
“I still have a lot of friends and family
there and I am really looking forward to
it.”
The 2014 Canadian Direct Insurance BC
Men’s Curling Championship final, which
was televised on Sportsnet for the first
time, saw Team Morris beat Team Montgomery 11-2.
Morris and Cotter were in control from
the start, opening with three points. It
was then up to Jason Montgomery and his
team of Jody Epp, throwing fourth rocks,
Miles Craig and Will Duggan to catch up.
But it was not to be. The team from Victoria were never able to take control of
the game and their fate was sealed in the
seventh end, when Team Morris secured a
four-ender, putting the score at 10-2.
The game followed a thrilling semi-finals on Saturday that saw Montgomery’s
rink just edge out 2009 BC champion Brent
Pierce on the last rock of the 10th end.
This will be the fourth trip to the Brier
for Cotter, who grew up in Kamloops but
now lives in Vernon. It will also be the
fourth trip to the Brier for Sawatsky and
the second trip to the Brier for Griffith.
Skip Morris, who joined the rink as
skip at the start of the season, is himself
no stranger to the Brier, now with seven
purple hearts to his name, but this is the
first time Morris will represent B.C.

Men’s Curling Championship took place at
the Vancouver Curling Club from Feb. 5-9.
The 2014 Tim Hortons Brier takes place

Martin in the Battle of Alberta, while
Steve Laycock took the Saskatchewan
crown.
Jeff Stoughton of Manitoba will once
again battle for the Brier title, which he
won for the first time in Kamloops in 1996.
Greg Balsdon, of Ontario, meanwhile,
will be making his first appearance at the
Brier after defeating Glenn Howard. Also
making his first appearance will be former

the Canadian men’s championship.
The Quebec team of Jean-Michel Menard will be back at the Brier as well, after

New type of workshop
COACHES who want to get an advanced certification to take their teams further in competition are
being offered a new type of workshop.

replacing Level 3 Technical. As of December 31,
2013, Level 3 Technical no longer exists.
Competition Development is a comprehensive
course that is designed to assist coaches in taking
their teams to the next level of competitive play
(eg: provincial, national or international).
The workshop encompasses planning, strategy,
analysis and program management to better your
team’s performance.
The workshop is not currently being offered
in B.C. but visit http://www.curlbc.ca/coursescamps/competition-development/ if you would
like to find out more.

hoping for home-ice advantage as they join teams
from Quesnel, Port Alberni, the Comox Valley, Nanaimo, Langley and New Westminster in the competition.

Team Shantz with coach Darryl Horne.
Island tops the podium again
VANCOUVER Island curling teams
were once again on the podium at
a Curl BC championship event.
Victoria’s Wes Craig and Parksville’s Penny Shantz both went
undefeated through the 2014 Tim
Hortons BC Senior Curling Championships to secure gold and the
chance to compete at nationals in
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
The B.C. event was staged at
the Comox Valley Curling Club in
Courtenay. Chair of the host committee, Judy Francis, said: “The Comox Valley Curling Club had a wonderful time hosting these Senior
Championships and were totally
amazed by the support of both the
club members and the Comox Valley community.”
Team Shantz and Team Craig
are the fourth and fifth Vancouver Island teams to have won a BC
curling title in 2014, after the Nanaimo teams of Van Osch (junior
women’s and women’s) and Victoria’s Team de Jong (junior men’s).
Team Shantz, rounded out by
third Sandra Jenkins, second Debbie Pulak, lead Kate Horne and
coach Darryl Horne, represent
Parksville Curling Club, but two
members of the team and their
coach hail from Salmon Arm (Jenkins and the Hornes).
Team Craig, rounded out by
third Blair Cusack, second Tony
Anslow and lead Kevin Britt, and
coached by Roselyn Craig, beat
4
last year’s champions, Team Lepine in the final with a score of 8-5.
The Victoria Curling Centre team
– whose members hail from Victoria, Shawnigan Lake and Sooke –
scored deuces in the fourth, sixth
and eighth ends to secure their
win. Craig Lepine skips the Peace
Arch Curling Centre team, which is
rounded out by Stan Walker, Berry
Breton and new addition to the
team this year Mike Pelech.
The women’s final between
Team Shantz and Team Deputan
was a close affair. Tied 3-3 going
into the 10th end, Shantz managed to score a single point to take
the lead and the gold medal. Team
Deputan, from Chilliwack Curling Club, only lost to Team Shantz
during the entire competition. The
team, made up of skip Lisa Deputan, third Janet Klebe, second Laura Wigham and lead Jane Adam,
took home the silver medals.
Bronze medals were awarded
to Team Thulin, from Campbell
River Curling Club, with Dean Thulin as skip, Lyle Boyce at third, Brad
Sullivan at second and Tom Green
at lead, and Team Blashko, from
Summerland Curling Club, with
Lil Blashko as skip, Cindy Curtain
as third, Sylvia Lowe as second,
Tammy Brennan as lead and Diane
Tetreault as fifth.
The Senior nationals in Yellowknife take place March 20-30,
2014.

Bob will be among the familiar faces at the Tim Hortons Brier
THE likes of Jeff Stoughton, John Morris and
Kevin Koe are not the only familiar faces that
will be appearing at the 2014 Tim Hortons
Brier.
Long-time curling fan Bob Barquest will
be stationed at a booth in Kamloops to trade
his prized curling pins - a booth he has set up
nearly every year at the Brier since 1978.
It’s a hobby he enjoys not only because
he wants to finish his collection, but also because he can meet up with friends along the
way.
“Although I’m only looking for a couple
more pins to finish my collection, I’m not
ready to give it up,” said Barquest, who is in
his 80s.
“I like going and I like all the friends I have
made in the curling world.
“There’s a camraderie that you have with
all the pin collectors.”
Despite his enthusiasm for the hobby, Bar-
quest admits that pin trading is not growing
in popularity.
“We used to go to the Brier and there
would be 10-20 collectors there. When I was
in Winnipeg (at the Olympic Trials), there was
only about seven of us,” he said.
“Maybe everybody has everything they
need so they’re stopping trading.”
Next year’s Brier in Calgary will be Barquest’s 30th Brier, and could be his last. “God
willing, I may be ready to retire then,” he said.
But Barquest, who curls at the Richmond
Curling Club, isn’t going to let pin collecting
at curling events die off.
His hope is that he can convince some of
the younger fans to give it a go.
He said: “Every time I go to the Brier, I take
a bag of pins, and if there’s a family walking
by with kids, I give the kids a pin. You never
can tell, maybe I’ll make a trader out of them
some day.”

Show your love for the sport!
CURLING brings people from all
backgrounds, generations and abilities together in a competitive yet
fun environment.
Curling is truly a sport for life.
Families of all ages can play together. Just look at gold medal winners
Team Jennifer Jones and Team Brad
Jacobs. Jennifer grew up in a curling
family and has been curling since
she was a child. Team Jacobs is made
up of two brothers and a cousin who
were able to come together to compete against the world’s best curlers
and then stand together on the podium to receive their gold medals.
What momentous moments!
“I’ll never ever, ever, ever, no
matter what happens from here on
out, forget the moment of standing
on the podium with my brother,” E.J.
Harnden told reporters in Sochi.
Now, most of us aren’t aspiring to
head off to the Olympics, we are just
curling for the shear joy of the sport.
We understand the thrill of sliding
down the ice and making that perfect shot – or at least we dream of
making that perfect shot! We love
getting together with our friends
and family or watching our kids try
to slide around as they learn a sport
they will be able to play for many,
many years to come.
That’s why a few of BC’s most
passionate curlers established the
Curling for Life Endowment Fund.
Together they know, just like you and
I know, that to ensure curling thrives
in our province we need to come
together to take action by making a
gift to the Fund. Your charitable gift
will help strengthen curling throughout BC for years to come.

Mixed Doubles win for Victoria’s de Jong
CAMERON de Jong came home with his

Golden Ears Winter Club to host 2015 BC Scotties
THE best women curlers in the province
are heading back to Maple Ridge, Curl
BC has announced.
The 2015 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, Presented by Best
Western, will be returning to the Golden
Ears Winter Club in Maple Ridge after 11
years.
The event will take place January 1825, 2015, and will showcase BC’s top
women curlers who will be playing for
the opportunity to represent the province at the national Scotties Tournament
of Hearts in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Mike Mallett, manager of Golden
Ears Winter Club, said the club – with
its potential for a large rink-side seating
area and a spacious upper lounge – was
a great location for the Scotties.
“We last hosted it in ‘O4 and we’re
looking forward to having it back. I
haven’t seen members this excited for a
long time.
“I’m looking forward to getting people
out to watch and putting Maple Ridge on
the map. We probably have one of the
nicest curling clubs in the province, if not
the country.”
Curl BC CEO Scott Braley said: “We
are really looking forward to bringing
the 2015 Scotties BC Women’s Curling
Championship back to Maple Ridge.
“The Golden Ears Winter Club have
been fantastic hosts in the past and we
know they will put on another great
show.”
The 2015 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, Presented by Best
Western, will be 10-team round-robin
competition, with the top four teams
heading into a playoff round. The semifinal and final will be televised on
Sportsnet.
The Golden Ears Winter Club is located on 105th Avenue in Maple Ridge
and is a six-sheet facility with three
additional junior sheets for young curlers.
Field is set for 2014 AMJ Campbell Mixed event
THE field has been set for the 2014 AMJ
Campbell Mixed Curling Championship
in Duncan.
Eight curling teams from around
the province will be battling for the BC
crown and the chance to represent the
province at nationals in North Bay, Ontario.
Teams from New Westminster, Richmond, Vancouver, Kerry Park, Victoria,
Prince Rupert, Salmon Arm and Kimberley will be taking part.
Ken Percival, chair of the host committee from Duncan Curling Club, said:
“The Duncan Curling Club is really looking forward to hosting the 2014 AMJ
Campbell BC Mixed Curling Championship. We know these eight teams will
have a great time in our community.”
Teams are made up of two men and
two women playing a 10-end game of

Team Van Osch make BC proud at first ever Scotties
A FLU bug that was so severe some sufferers were sent to hospital was not enough
to stop Victoria’s Team Van Osch from playing at the top of their game.
The foursome from the Victoria Curling
Centre didn’t let sickness slow them down
at the national Scotties Tournament of
Hearts in Montreal February 1-9.
They even managed to break a record
— being the first team in Scotties history
(along with Team Saskatchewan at the
same event) to win a game fielding only
three players.
This was the first national Scotties event
for the women, who won the BC title in
Prince George in January.
They finished the event with an impressive 6-5 win loss record — with more than
one loss to much more experienced teams
going into the extra end.
The team, made up of Kesa Van Osch
from Nanaimo, Stephanie Baier from Victoria, Jessie Sanderson from Coquitlam
and Carley Sandwith from Victoria, have no
doubt been bitten by the competitive bug.
Van Osch, the skip, said: “I am very
proud of how my team played and how
they represented B.C. in Montreal and we
plan on doing it again soon.”
Baier, who plays third on the team, said
it had spurred them on to work even more.
She said: “We put our team together in
August. The whole goal of this year was to
learn to compete and to get to the Scotties
in PG. We found a way to get to the Scotties, and then to get to nationals.
“To get there and to get to be able to
compete with the top teams in Canada and
the world has really helped us and put us in
a great mindset for the future.”
Baier credits their success at the Scotties to the addition of Prince George’s Patti
Knezevic at fifth.
Patti stepped in for Kesa, Stephanie and
Carley when the women were ill during the
event.
“We’re so, so happy that we had Patti,”
said Baier. “She played skip, third, lead,
fifth and cheerleader, so she played five
positions for us. We don’t know what we
would have done without her.”
