Commodore’s Report
March already! It seems like only yesterday
it was February. Jared and Mike (Murph) have
been hard at work preparing our fleet for the
spring season. The biggest task was stripping
and repainting the Patty. March 11th will be here
before you know it when the 420 floats will be
ready for the Barnstable High Sailing Team. The
remainder of the floats and docks are scheduled to
go in the water on April 11th at 9:30am. We can
always use extra hands, so be sure to mark your
calendars and we’ll look forward to your help.
Most of the Club’s committees are up and running
planning for all of this year’s events and activities.
Ocean, cruise and one design have had meetings
and are planning for an exciting and busy year on
the water. The membership committee is hard
at work with the interview process meeting with
21 new applicants and their sponsors. Youth and
entertainment have also had meetings and are on
the way to a successful year.
Speaking of entertainment, the jazz winter
brunch was well attended with wonderful food
and excellent entertainment. Hopefully this can
become an annual event to help fill the winter
doldrums.
Special thanks go to Jacquie Newson for her hard
work and effort in planning the annual ski trip to
Shawnee Peak. A terrific weekend as usual. If
you missed it this year, pencil it into your 2010
calendar.
Check the Telltale for upcoming events and
committee meetings. Take the time to join a
committee and attend these events. They all
make for a great time and great Club camaraderie.
While you’re at the Club, check out the new bar
and light fare menu at the Captain’s Table – it’s
GREAT!
See you around the Club.

General Manager’s Report
“What’s Happening” Report
•
Right now we are consistently bombarded with news
of economic uncertainty so I thought it would be
worthwhile to provide a small “State of the Club”
report.

mailed to all members during January and can
be redeemed during February and March.
•
We’re featuring an unbelievable three course
prix fixe menu for only $16.95 Sunday thru

they always sell out quickly.)
•
Mystery Envelops return for April and May.
Dine anytime at the Captain’s Table and get
a mystery envelope to be opened ONLY when
you dine with us again. The rules are simple present your envelope unopened to your server
and redeem your prize. Amounts range from $1
to $100 off. I hope you’re feeling lucky.
•
Special Dinners
Since our fiscal year began on October 1st revenue is
off about 1.7% and we are being very conservative
with expenditures. Rest assured we have cash
reserves to handle any downturn but actually we
anticipate a very good spring.
We’ve created a number of promotions to give all of
our members plenty of reason to visit the Club. We
are hopeful that when you’re looking for somewhere
to go, the Club will be your first choice.

The Telltale
GPS Course at HYC
Saturday, March 28th
9am - noon
Jim Reed will share his expertise to show you how to
connect your GPS to VHF (DSC) radio to automatically
notify the Coast Guard and other vessels of your
location in times of distress.
The purpose of this seminar is to remove the
uncertainty associated with connecting various
navigational instruments together to share electronic
data.
GPS = Global Positioning System
DSC = Digital Selective Calling (VHF radio)
AIS = Automatic Identification System (Ship VHF)
This seminar will be a practical discussion of what information these navigational components
can provide the captain along with a tutorial showing you how to connect them together to share
navigation, rescue, and safety data. You will learn how to use your VHF (DSC) radio’s capabilities
and how to connect it to your GPS receiver. In addition, we will discuss the recently FCC approved
Class B ship Automatic Identification System (AIS), how it works and why you might want to install
a system on your vessel.
Be sure to bring your manuals to this session.
Call (508) 775-9331 or on line at www.hyannisyachtclub.org to reserve your place.
Reminder:
Update your member
information by going online to www.hyannisyachtclub.
org, log onto the members’ section and update your
information under the profile tab found on the right
side of the screen. If your information is correct in
the current roster book, you do not need to reply.
April 4th – 9:00am
All Hands on Dock!!!
That’s right – we need help building 3 floats – so
whether you have experience or not, this is a great
project to help us get ready for the season. To let
us know you’re coming, please call Jared at (617)
279-6108 or online at jared@hyannisyachtclub.org.

Archive Committee Update
The project of collecting, identifying people, scanning
and electronic storing of items from the archives of the
Hyannis Yacht Club is continuing, and it seems to me that
we are more than half way towards completion. Our plan
is to make the “SCRAPBOOK” available to all members as
a link on the HYC website.
If there is anyone who has memorabilia or photographs
that would be important in capturing the history of HYC,
we would very much like to hear from you. If your items
are dear to you, we will scan them with care and return
them to you.
As you can imagine, the general rule is the older the better.
To date we have scanned old notes and announcements,
newspaper articles, handwritten and typed interviews,
photographs of all sizes and condition, menus, scorecards,
and obituaries. Anything that marks a date in time in the
past life of the Club, especially if it involves members
from days gone by, is important to this project. Please
call me at (508)280-5438 let me know what “goodies” you
have and I will arrange to get it from you!
Thanks for your “stuff”.

Docks & Grounds Update
Mark your calendar for
Saturday, April 11, 2009
Wanted: Club muscle to launch docks. Must be
able to lift at least two pounds and take numerous
directions from many bosses while staying dry.
Coffee and lunch provided for those actively
involved.
The Club needs YOU on Saturday, April 11, 2009
at 9:30am, for the annual dock splash. Jared
has secured Baxter Crane, and we will be working
with a rising tide to assist in floating the docks
off the beach. Bring tools that you’ve used in the
past for the connecting of the docks and a spare
set of clothes (Mr. Hartford) “just in case”.
Please call Randy Wallin at (774)212-1500 or Jim
Reed at (508)771-4974 to let us know if you are
available. Yes, we do realize it’s Easter weekend,
but tide constraints make this our best date to
accomplish the task, and besides, it offers you a
reason to get away from it all, or bring family to
help in our “family” Club atmosphere.
If you have sponsored a new member, this is a
great way to introduce them to many members.
~ Jim Reed & Randy Wallin, Co-Chairs

Volvo Ocean Race Comes to Boston!
Attention all HYC Members!
For the first time one of the world’s premier ocean
races will make a stop in Boston and they are looking
for volunteers to help with the event. They need
both volunteers for the on shore activities, and boats
with drivers to help with race management. The boat
opportunity will put people right on the 50 yard line
for the in-port race, pro-am and re-start. They need
24 - 35 foot center console type boats and express
cruisers to act as photo boats, marshalling boats etc.
HYC is already very well represented with Rick Bishop,
the Boston Volvo Race Operations Manager, and Tom
Duggan, the in-port race PRO.
This will be a really fun opportunity for a group of
members to get involved.
Please visit their web site:
www.volvooceanraceatfanpierboston.com for
volunteer and event schedule information.
