Gillespie Concert Organ meets its match with this year’s soloist, Hector Olivera, who returns for his second recital with Pacific Symphony’s Pedals and Pipes series. Known for his passionate musicianship and interpretations of both classical and popular music, Olivera opens the program with his own arrangements of Bach’s vigorous Sinfonia from Cantata No. 29, and Piazzolla’s somber Oblivion. Guilmant’s Sonata No. 8 shows the vast range of the organ and Mozart’s Fantasia in F Minor reveals the organ’s terrifying power and sublime beauty. In addition, Lefébure-Wély’s March in C Major is spirited in French style, and as a finale, Olivera brings his virtuosic improvisation skills to the stage, creating a new piece based on themes suggested by the audience. This organ recital takes place on Sunday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Segerstrom Concert Hall. For more information or to purchase tickets call 714-755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. The late Jazz-Swing singer and musician extraordinaire Cole remains Unforgettable to fans worldwide. In Straighten up & Fly Right, music icons Lewis and Pizzarelli present the late legend’s ageless hits, which include Straighten Up and Fly Right, Route 66, I Love You for Sentimental Reasons, and It’s Only a Paper Moon. With three Grammys and more than eighty albums throughout his career, Lewis is known for infusing Gospel and Classical sounds into his Jazz-Blues-R&B repertoire. The Chicago Tribune called him “electric,” saying he “clearly is capable of writing fresh, aria-like melodies steeped in blue.” Pizzarelli has cultivated an award-winning international career as a contemporary interpreter of classic American standards and ballads. Called “madly creative” by the Los Angeles Times, the host of nationallysyndicated Radio Deluxe With John Pizzarelli has won the 2007 Nightlife Award, which honors the best in New York cabaret, comedy, and Jazz.
